Natural search results are unpaid listings a search engine returns in response to a query; they are also commonly called organic results.
What makes a search result natural?
“Natural” describes how a listing is placed: it appears through the search engine’s unpaid results rather than as an advertisement. The engine’s systems select and order these listings for a query, taking factors such as relevance and quality into account. No single factor guarantees a particular position. Ahrefs explains the distinction between organic results and paid placements in its SEO glossary.

Natural does not mean untouched by website owners. Search engine optimization (SEO) is intended to improve a site’s visibility in organic results; it is not the same as buying an ad placement. Webopedia describes natural search as unpaid or organic search.

How natural results differ from paid ads
| Aspect | Natural (organic) result | Paid ad |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial status | Unpaid placement in the search results. | Advertising placement. |
| How it appears | The search engine selects and orders it in response to the query. | The advertiser pays for placement under the search engine’s advertising system. |
| How to recognize it | It is not an advertisement; its position alone does not establish its status. | Search engines may identify it with an advertising label. Labels and layouts vary. |
A search results page, or SERP, can show organic listings alongside ads and other features. A listing’s location near the top does not, by itself, tell you whether it is paid or natural. The page’s labels and presentation vary by search engine and query. Directom likewise notes that natural listings can share a page with advertising.

What natural search does—and does not—mean
- It means unpaid, not unoptimized. SEO can seek greater visibility in organic results, but a natural listing is not purchased as an ad.
- It does not mean inherently more trustworthy. “Natural” identifies the placement type, not a guarantee about the accuracy or quality of the page.
- It does not describe a fixed page layout. The number and arrangement of ads, organic listings, and other features can vary.
