A volume serial number is an identifier associated with a formatted file-system volume. In Windows, you can display it with vol C:. It is different from the physical disk’s manufacturer-assigned serial number, and it should not be treated as a guaranteed unique hardware identity.
What a volume serial number identifies
Windows assigns a volume serial number when a hard disk is formatted; Microsoft’s developer documentation describes it as an opaque value generated by the file system at format time. “Opaque” means applications should treat it as a value to report or compare, not as a code whose parts reveal the disk’s make, model, or other hardware details. Microsoft’s GetVolumeInformation documentation and Raymond Chen’s Microsoft Developer Blogs explanation, published January 27, 2022, describe the distinction.

The value belongs to a file-system volume, rather than identifying the physical storage device. A single physical disk can contain multiple volumes, and a volume is not the same thing as a drive letter: the letter is a path Windows may assign to make a volume accessible.

| Identifier | What it refers to | How it is assigned or used | How to retrieve it in Windows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volume serial number | A formatted file-system volume | Generated by the file system at format time; an opaque value, not necessarily related to hardware. | Use vol or the GetVolumeInformation API. |
| Physical disk serial number | The hardware device | A manufacturer-assigned device property. | Microsoft identifies WMI’s Win32_PhysicalMedia.SerialNumber as a way to access the manufacturer serial; see GetVolumeInformation. |
| Volume GUID path | A Windows volume path, conventionally \?Volume{GUID} |
Identifies a volume independently of a drive-letter assignment; drive letters can change, and labels can be missing or duplicated. | Windows volume naming is documented in Naming a Volume. |
How to find the volume serial number
Use Command Prompt
- Open Command Prompt.
- Enter
vol C:, replacingC:with the drive letter you want to check. - Read the displayed volume label and serial number, if present. Running
volwithout a drive argument reports the current drive. See Microsoft’s vol command reference.
Retrieve it from Windows software
Call GetVolumeInformation with a volume root path such as C: and provide an output pointer for lpVolumeSerialNumber. Microsoft also documents GetVolumeInformationByHandleW for getting volume information associated with a file handle. Consult the API documentation for parameter details.

Is it unique, and does formatting change it?
Do not assume the volume serial number is a globally unique identifier for a disk or a dependable hardware fingerprint. Microsoft describes it as opaque and not necessarily related to hardware. Some remote file systems return zero for the volume serial number and file identifier, as Chen explains in his 2022 discussion of file-system identifiers.
The documented definition ties generation to format time, but that alone does not establish a universal rule for every file system or every later volume operation. Whether a particular operation changes the value depends on the file system and operation; verify the behavior for the specific system rather than treating every format or volume change as guaranteed to produce a different number.
