Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max Review: Pros, Cons and Verdict (2026)

The iPhone 16 Pro Max still offers a huge 120Hz display, versatile cameras and strong tested endurance. Its size, charging speed and 2026 deal price determine whether it is worth buying.

The iPhone 16 Pro Max is still a strong choice if you want a very large, smooth display, flexible cameras and standout battery life in a controlled test. Its drawbacks are equally clear: it is big and heavy, charging is not especially fast, and it is a 2024 model now replaced by newer Pro Max iPhones. In 2026, it makes the most sense as a discounted previous-generation phone, provided its price, condition and warranty compare well with newer options.

iPhone 16 Pro Max at a glance

What matters What you get
Display 6.9-inch OLED, 2868 × 1320 pixels, 460 ppi, adaptive refresh up to 120Hz, Always-On display and up to 2,000 nits outdoor peak brightness, according to Apple’s specifications.
Rear cameras 48MP main, 48MP ultra-wide and 12MP 5x telephoto, with 5x optical zoom in and 2x optical zoom out, according to Apple.
Weight 227 grams, according to Apple.
Battery test 17 hours 38 minutes of continuous 5G web browsing at 150 nits in Tom’s Guide’s 2024 test; this is not equivalent to Apple’s playback estimate.
Charging test 55% after 30 minutes in Tom’s Guide’s 2024 test. Apple separately says around 50% in about 30 minutes under its specified adapter and cable or MagSafe setup.
Current buying context Older generation; value depends on the live offer and its condition, warranty and return terms.

What the iPhone 16 Pro Max does well

A spacious, bright, fluid display

The 6.9-inch OLED is the phone’s defining feature. It gives games, video, reading and multitasking plenty of room, while ProMotion can adapt refresh rates up to 120Hz for smoother scrolling and animation. Apple also specifies Always-On display and up to 2,000 nits of outdoor peak brightness. At launch, Apple described it as “the largest ever on iPhone” in its September 2024 announcement.

Excellent endurance in a defined test

Tom’s Guide recorded 17 hours and 38 minutes in its October 2024 continuous web-browsing test over 5G at 150 nits. That makes the result useful for comparing phones tested under the same method, but it is not a promise of how long every owner will go between charges: network conditions, brightness, apps and usage differ.

Apple’s separate estimate is up to 33 hours of video playback. That is a manufacturer estimate for a different activity, not an independent result or a direct comparison with Tom’s Guide’s web-browsing figure. See Apple’s battery and charging specifications.

Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max, 256GB, Black Titanium - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • The large 6.9-inch display combines ProMotion 120Hz technology with advanced color calibration, giving movies, games, and productivity apps a spacious, crisp, and fluid visual experience that’s ideal for multitasking or immersive media consumption.

Versatile rear cameras and capable video

The rear system combines a 48MP main camera with a 48MP ultra-wide and a 12MP telephoto lens offering 5x optical zoom in. The ultra-wide is useful when a scene will not fit in the main-camera view, while the dedicated telephoto gives you meaningful reach without relying entirely on digital cropping. Tom’s Guide praised the camera quality and found the ultra-wide upgrade useful, but noted that some competitors can retain more sharpness at higher digital zoom.

Tom’s Guide’s specification comparison also lists 4K Dolby Vision recording up to 120 frames per second. That high frame rate supports slow-motion footage, though it is a specialized mode rather than a guarantee that every setting or clip will suit every workflow.

Useful wired and magnetic charging options

USB-C supports USB 3 data transfer up to 10Gb/s, useful when moving large files over a compatible cable and connection. Apple specifies MagSafe charging up to 25W when paired with a 30W-or-higher adapter. Its stated fast-charge setup reaches around 50% in about 30 minutes using a 20W-or-higher adapter and USB-C cable, or a 30W-or-higher adapter with MagSafe; the required accessories are separate.

Where it falls short

Its size affects everyday handling

At 227 grams, this is a substantial phone before adding a case. Tom’s Guide’s reviewer found the height and width made one-handed use a stretch for some people and said a case adds bulk. That is a practical warning, not a universal ergonomic verdict: hand size and how you hold a phone matter. If possible, handle one in person before choosing it over a smaller model.

  • The large 6.9-inch display combines ProMotion 120Hz technology with advanced color calibration, giving movies, games, and productivity apps a spacious, crisp, and fluid visual experience that’s ideal for multitasking or immersive media consumption.
  • Titanium frame and reinforced edges provide a premium, durable build, reducing weight compared to stainless steel while enhancing grip and making the phone easier to handle during long sessions of video recording, gaming, or editing.
  • Camera system designed for versatility and precision, including ultra-wide, wide, and telephoto lenses with improved low-light and macro capabilities, giving photographers and creators a broader range of expressive tools while maintaining sharp details across the frame.
  • Advanced Action button offers customizable shortcuts, allowing quick access to features like capturing photos, launching apps, controlling accessibility tools, or activating automation tasks without interrupting your workflow.
  • Audio and video performance optimized for creators, with spatial audio, improved microphones, and stabilized video recording, providing professional-quality sound and smooth footage whether recording content, streaming, or joining video calls.

Charging speed is a weak point

In Tom’s Guide’s 2024 test, the phone reached 55% after 30 minutes, and the reviewer judged its charging speed disappointing against some competing phones. Apple’s separate “around 50% in about 30 minutes” figure uses Apple’s stated fast-charge setup and conditions; it should not be read as the same test. If short charging windows are important to you, compare independent results using the same method rather than assuming a quick top-up.

It is no longer the current Pro Max

The 16 Pro Max belongs to the 2024 generation. TechRadar’s maintained buying guide says it can remain an exceptional handset when discounted by third-party retailers, while newer models bring improvements including chipset, design, telephoto and selfie-camera changes. That guidance does not establish a current price or stock level: check the actual offer rather than treating launch pricing as today’s value.

Is the iPhone 16 Pro Max worth buying in 2026?

It can be, if its discount is large enough to make the older generation worthwhile and you specifically want a big-screen iPhone with strong tested endurance and a flexible camera system. Tom’s Guide listed the 256GB model at $1,199 at US launch in 2024; that is historical launch pricing, not a current quote.

Before buying, compare the exact device and seller rather than judging by a headline discount:

Best Value
Apple iPhone 16 Plus, 128GB, Pink - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • The larger 6.9-inch display enhances productivity and media consumption, giving extra room for multitasking, side-by-side apps, and immersive viewing without feeling unwieldy in hand.
  • Camera improvements focus on ultra-wide performance, capturing more detail at the edges of the frame and reducing distortion, making landscape shots, group photos, and architecture photography cleaner.
  • Refined gesture controls and haptic feedback make interactions feel more precise, so scrolling, tapping, or switching between apps is smoother and more satisfying compared to previous Plus models.
  • Audio enhancements optimize speaker output for spatial awareness, delivering clearer separation between instruments and voices in music, video playback, and FaceTime calls without relying on headphones.
  • Durable yet lightweight materials balance heft and portability, with a subtly textured back and reinforced edges that improve grip while maintaining the premium appearance expected from the Plus series.
  • Confirm storage capacity, unlocked or carrier-locked status, and whether the phone is new, refurbished or used.
  • Check the battery and overall condition, warranty coverage, return window and seller reputation.
  • Compare the final price with the current-generation Pro Max and the smaller Pro model; include the value of any newer camera or design features you would use.
  • Decide whether the 6.9-inch display is worth the extra size and weight for your everyday use.

For current model positioning, see TechRadar’s maintained iPhone buying guide. It offers broad context, not a live inventory or price guarantee.

Should you choose the 16 Pro Max or a newer iPhone?

There is no reliable universal winner without the current prices and the specific newer model being considered. The 16 Pro Max is the more compelling buy when its discount is substantial and you value its large display, 5x optical telephoto and endurance result. A newer Pro Max may be preferable if its updated chipset, design or camera improvements matter enough to justify the price gap. A smaller Pro is worth considering if comfortable handling matters more than maximum screen area and battery life.

For an apples-to-apples decision, compare the same storage tier and seller conditions, then check screen size and weight, telephoto reach and selfie camera, video features, charging results and battery tests with their methods. Do not infer a current benchmark or price comparison from the 2024 review figures.

Verdict

The iPhone 16 Pro Max remains a capable premium iPhone, with an expansive high-refresh-rate screen, versatile cameras and unusually strong endurance in Tom’s Guide’s stated test. Its weight, awkward one-handed reach for some users and slower charging make it less universally appealing than its feature list suggests. In 2026, buy it for the combination of large-screen hardware and a genuinely attractive verified deal—not because its launch price or its past position in Apple’s lineup guarantees value today.
