Yes—you can reuse one Apple Health MCP server with multiple AI clients instead of installing a separate server for Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf, ChatGPT Desktop, Codex CLI, or other compatible clients. The server command and Apple Health export directory stay central; what changes is where each client stores MCP settings and how it represents the same command, arguments, and environment variable. Philip D’Souza’s August 18, 2026 DEV Community article describes this model and reports eight supported clients, eight read-only tools, 190 Apple Health metrics, and an 84 kB npm package. Those figures and the article’s claims that processing is local with zero network calls are author-reported, not independently verified here. The available instructions show a complete Claude Desktop example and configuration locations for several other clients, but not all eight complete configuration blocks.

What does “one MCP server, eight AI clients” mean?

Model Context Protocol (MCP) lets an AI application launch or connect to a tool server. In this setup, a single Apple Health server reads an exported Apple Health data directory, while each AI client gets its own MCP registration that points to that same server script. You do not need eight copies of the server merely because you use eight clients.

The important distinction is between the server definition and the client adapter. The server definition contains the Node.js executable, the path to server.mjs, and the HEALTH_DATA_DIR environment value. The adapter is the client-specific file, settings screen, or JSON schema that stores those values. D’Souza summarizes the idea as: “The server command never changes. Only the file path does.” Treat that as a description of the intended pattern, not a promise that every client accepts identical syntax; the article specifically says opencode uses a different configuration shape.

The visible source material names Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf, ChatGPT Desktop, Codex CLI, and opencode. It says the guide covers eight clients, but the two additional names and their complete current configurations are not exposed in the available excerpt. Do not copy an unverified configuration from one client into another.

What is known about the server and its tools?

The article lists eight tools and describes the server as read-only and local. Because the source code and data flow were not inspected for this article, use those as author-reported characteristics and verify them against the project documentation before putting sensitive data into a production workflow.

Tool name What the name suggests What is established
get_mcp_status Checking whether the MCP server is available Listed by the article; exact response fields are not supplied.
list_metrics Enumerating available health metrics Listed by the article; filtering and pagination details are not supplied.
get_health_metrics Reading selected health measurements Listed by the article; required parameters are not supplied.
get_trends Requesting a trend over time Listed by the article; date and aggregation rules are not supplied.
compare_periods Comparing two time ranges Listed by the article; period syntax is not supplied.
get_structured_export Retrieving structured export content Listed by the article; output schema is not supplied.
get_intraday Reading higher-frequency, within-day records Listed by the article; supported metrics and intervals are not supplied.
query_health_data Running a broader health-data query Listed by the article; query language and limits are not supplied.

The article reports support for 190 Apple Health metrics and an 84 kB npm package. Both numbers are attributed to the August 18, 2026 article and were not checked against a package registry or repository metadata. Package size can also mean different things (for example, compressed download size versus unpacked directory size), so do not use 84 kB as an installation-size guarantee.

What do I need before configuring any client?

Prepare the data and the server path first. Client settings cannot compensate for a missing export directory or an incorrect script location.

  • An Apple Health export directory that the server is intended to read.
  • Node.js available on the computer where the MCP client runs, because the shown command invokes node.
  • The server’s server.mjs file at a known absolute path.
  • Permission for your user account to read the export directory and the server file.
  • The configuration entry point for each client you plan to use.
  • A backup of the export before experimenting with paths or file permissions.

Use an absolute path for both the script and HEALTH_DATA_DIR. Relative paths depend on the client’s working directory and can fail when a desktop app is launched from a shortcut, while a terminal uses a different directory.

How do I configure Claude Desktop?

The available example uses an mcpServers object, a server entry named health-export, the node command, an argument pointing to server.mjs, and an environment variable naming the Apple Health export directory.

  1. Locate Claude Desktop’s MCP server configuration area according to the version of the app you have installed.
  2. Add a server entry with the following structure. Replace both illustrative paths with real absolute paths on your computer.
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "health-export": {
      "command": "node",
      "args": ["/Users/your-name/path/to/server.mjs"],
      "env": {
        "HEALTH_DATA_DIR": "/Users/your-name/AppleHealthExport"
      }
    }
  }
}
  1. Save the file and restart Claude Desktop so it reloads MCP definitions.
  2. Check the client’s MCP or tools status area. A successful connection should expose the health server without a JSON parse error.
  3. Start with a non-destructive status or metric-list request before asking for a large date-range query.

The path in args must identify the actual server script, not the export directory. Conversely, HEALTH_DATA_DIR must identify the directory containing the Apple Health export, not the folder that happens to contain server.mjs.

Where do the other named clients keep their MCP settings?

The source excerpt identifies different entry points, but it does not provide every complete JSON block. Use the locations below as orientation and consult the current client documentation for exact nesting, reload behavior, and supported fields.

Client Entry point identified in the article Configuration warning
Cursor ~/.cursor/mcp.json The article names the file but does not show a complete current block.
Windsurf ~/.codeium/windsurf/mcp_config.json The article names the file but does not show a complete current block.
ChatGPT Desktop Settings > MCP Servers Use the graphical settings flow; the excerpt does not show the form’s current field names.
Codex CLI .mcp.json The excerpt does not specify whether the file is project-local, user-level, or both for your release.
opencode An mcp configuration with environment and an array-valued command Do not paste the Claude mcpServers/env shape unchanged.
Two additional clients Not visible in the available excerpt The article says eight clients are covered, but their names and blocks cannot be confirmed here.

Before editing a file, confirm that you are changing the profile used by the client you actually launch. A project-level configuration can take precedence over a user-level one, and a desktop application may read a different profile from its command-line companion.

How should I adapt the same server definition to each schema?

Keep the values constant, then translate only the container syntax required by the client. The three values to preserve are the executable (node), the script path (the server.mjs argument), and the export-directory environment value (HEALTH_DATA_DIR).

Command representation

Some clients represent a command as one string plus an argument array; others represent the executable and every argument as an array. If a client requires an array, the conceptual command is still Node.js followed by the absolute path to server.mjs. Do not add shell quoting, pipes, or a shell wrapper unless that client explicitly requires one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Environment representation

The Claude example places HEALTH_DATA_DIR under env. The article says opencode uses environment instead. A key called env in the wrong schema can be silently ignored, leaving the server without a data directory.

Server-name representation

health-export is the name used in the shown example, not a universal requirement. A client may require a map keyed by server name, an array of server objects, or a graphical entry. The name affects how the client displays the connection; it does not change the script or data directory.

How can I verify that a client is reading Apple Health data?

Validate the connection in small stages so a path problem is not confused with a tool or query problem.

  1. Confirm that the export directory exists and contains the files produced by Apple Health export. Do not rename or reorganize files while diagnosing the connection.
  2. Confirm that the account running the AI client can read the directory. A path that works in your terminal may fail for a sandboxed desktop process.
  3. Confirm that the server script path is absolute and points to the intended server.mjs.
  4. Restart the client after saving configuration. Many clients load MCP definitions only at startup.
  5. Use get_mcp_status if the client exposes it. A failed status indicates startup, schema, or permission trouble rather than a health-data query issue.
  6. Use list_metrics next. If status succeeds but the metric list fails, inspect the export-directory value and the server’s parsing error.
  7. Run a narrow health query with a short date range before requesting trends, comparisons, intraday data, or a structured export.

Keep the first test read-only. The article characterizes all eight tools as read-only, but that behavior is an author claim; a cautious test still avoids commands that could modify files or overwrite exports.

What privacy claims can I rely on?

D’Souza’s article describes the tools as local and says there are zero network calls. Those statements were not independently verified by inspecting the source code, dependencies, telemetry, or operating-system network activity. Treat them as design claims from the article, not as a security audit.

Even a genuinely local server can expose data through the AI client that invokes it. The client may retain conversation history, diagnostic logs, crash reports, or workspace caches. Review the client’s privacy controls, restrict access to the export directory, use a separate operating-system account when appropriate, and avoid copying raw records into prompts that do not need them.

Apple Health exports can contain highly sensitive information, including dates, measurements, and identifiers embedded in source files. Store the export on encrypted storage, limit backup destinations, and remove test copies when troubleshooting is complete. If your organization requires a documented data-flow review, obtain the project’s source and package metadata and perform that review before deployment.

What commonly breaks, and how do I fix it?

The client reports an invalid JSON or configuration error

Check commas, braces, quotation marks, and the top-level key expected by that client. A Claude-style mcpServers object is not valid for every client; opencode is explicitly described as using mcp, environment, and an array-valued command.

The server starts but shows no metrics

Verify HEALTH_DATA_DIR points to the export directory, not the server directory. Confirm the path is absolute, readable by the client process, and free of accidental trailing characters introduced while copying it.

The client cannot launch Node.js

Run node --version in the same user environment that launches the client. If Node.js is installed through a version manager, a graphical application may not inherit the terminal’s PATH; use the executable path supported by the client or install Node.js for the account that runs it.

Changes appear to have no effect

Fully quit and reopen the client, not merely the chat window. Then confirm that you edited the active profile or project file: Cursor, Windsurf, and Codex CLI use different locations, while ChatGPT Desktop uses a settings screen.

One client works while another does not

Compare the schema, not just the values. Ensure the working server’s script path and HEALTH_DATA_DIR were translated into the other client’s command-array and environment conventions instead of copied verbatim.

Is one shared server better than separate server installations?

A shared server reduces duplicate installs and keeps every client pointed at one export location. It also creates a single point of failure: a moved script, changed export path, incompatible Node.js update, or unreadable directory can affect every client at once.

Approach Advantages Costs and risks
One server, many client entries One update path, consistent tool names, less duplicated storage, and a single data-directory setting to maintain. Configuration syntax still differs; one broken path or server update can interrupt all clients.
Separate server copies Clients can be pinned to different versions or directories and isolated during testing. More maintenance, possible version drift, duplicated dependencies, and greater risk of pointing clients at inconsistent exports.

For a personal setup, one server with carefully documented client entries is the simpler model described by the article. For a managed or sensitive environment, version the server, record the exact client schemas, and test an upgrade with a copy of the export before changing the shared instance.

What is still unconfirmed about the claimed eight-client coverage?

The available excerpt does not expose the full linked guide, an official repository, release history, or package metadata. Therefore, the exact names of all eight clients, their current configuration blocks, supported operating systems, Node.js version requirements, metric definitions, and tool parameter schemas remain unconfirmed here.

The six named clients and their entry points are useful starting information, but they should not be presented as a complete compatibility matrix. Client interfaces change, and an MCP setting that worked when the August 18, 2026 article was published may require a different menu or schema in a later release. Before publishing an internal runbook or relying on a privacy guarantee, check the project’s current documentation and inspect the implementation yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use two Apple Health exports with the same MCP server?

The configuration model exposes one `HEALTH_DATA_DIR` value per server entry. To work with separate exports, create distinct client entries or server processes with different directory values and label them clearly; the available article does not document a built-in multi-directory switch.

Do all eight clients expose exactly the same eight tools?

The article lists eight tools for the server, but a client can hide tools, require approval, or display them under a different interface. Confirm the tools visible after connection rather than assuming every client presents identical controls.

What Node.js version is required?

The shown configuration proves that the server is launched with `node`, but the available material does not state a minimum or tested Node.js version. Check the project’s current installation notes before selecting a runtime for a shared setup.

Does an 84 kB package mean the complete installation uses only 84 kB?

No definitive conclusion can be drawn from the article’s wording alone. It reports an 84 kB npm package, but does not specify whether that is compressed download size, unpacked package size, or whether Node.js dependencies are included.
