Apple’s published compatibility lists and security releases help answer the first two; check hardware service and app requirements separately.
Which iPhones, iPads, and Macs can run Apple’s current major OS releases?
Apple’s 2026 Environmental Progress Report gives these broad compatibility cutoffs for its current major releases. They describe eligibility for those releases, not a promise that the same devices will support future major versions.

| Operating system | Documented compatibility cutoff |
|---|---|
| iOS 26 | iPhone 11, introduced in 2019. Apple says iOS 26 “extends support back to iPhone 11 (2019).” (Apple 2026 Environmental Progress Report) |
| iPadOS 26 | iPad (8th generation), introduced in 2020. (Apple 2026 Environmental Progress Report) |
| macOS Tahoe | MacBook models from 2019, with eligibility depending on the exact model. (Apple 2026 Environmental Progress Report) |
For Macs, use Apple’s model-by-model Tahoe compatibility list rather than purchase year or a broad family name. For example, the list includes MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019), MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2020, Four Thunderbolt 3 ports), and MacBook Air (M1, 2020). (Apple’s macOS Tahoe compatibility page, published September 14, 2026.)

Find the exact device model
- iPhone or iPad: Open Settings > General > About and note the model name. If you need to distinguish generations, use the model details shown there to identify the exact device.
- Mac: Choose the Apple menu > About This Mac and note the model name and year or chip details. Compare the full model description with Apple’s compatibility list.
Does an older device still get security updates?
Possibly. A device that cannot install the newest major operating system may still receive a security update on an older OS branch. Apple’s release listing includes iOS 18.7.10 and iPadOS 18.7.10 for iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, and iPad (7th generation), alongside iOS 26.6.2 and iPadOS 26.6.2 for newer listed device families. These are version-specific entries, not a guarantee that every older device receives every update. (Apple security releases.)

To check a particular device, match its model and installed operating-system version against Apple’s current security-release listing. The page changes as Apple publishes releases, so a past update is not proof of ongoing coverage: look for a current entry that names the relevant OS version and device family.
How to check whether your device is losing a specific kind of support
- Identify the exact model. Use Settings > General > About on iPhone or iPad, or Apple menu > About This Mac on Mac.
- Check major-OS eligibility. Compare the exact model with Apple’s compatibility information for iOS 26, iPadOS 26, or macOS Tahoe. A cutoff means the device is not listed for that release; it does not by itself establish that security updates have ended.
- Check security updates separately. On Apple’s security releases page, find the installed OS branch and confirm whether an entry covers the device family. Check again when deciding whether the device remains covered, because release listings change.
- Check service and apps separately. The compatibility and release information above does not determine hardware-service status or whether a particular app supports the device. Verify those requirements for the exact product and app you use.
What Apple’s adoption and reuse figures do—and do not—show
Apple reported that by February 2026, more than 74% of iPhone devices introduced in the preceding four years had updated to iOS 26, and over 66% of iPad devices introduced in that period had updated to iPadOS 26. These figures describe adoption among those recent-device groups; they do not measure support for older models. (Apple 2026 Environmental Progress Report.)

Availability and eligibility depend on location and device; check Apple’s options for your circumstances rather than assuming every model qualifies. (Apple 2026 Environmental Progress Report.)
