To see what is using storage in Windows 10, open Start > Settings > System > Storage. The page breaks storage down by category, such as installed apps and temporary files. For a quick check of how much space remains on a drive, open File Explorer > This PC.
How do I see what is taking up space on my C: drive?
- Select Start > Settings > System > Storage.
- Read the category bars to see how storage is being used. Select a category to view its details.
- Select Show more categories if you want to see additional categories, including System & reserved.
Microsoft describes Storage settings as providing a detailed view of storage use. Installed apps identifies application storage; Temporary files covers temporary data that may be removable; and System & reserved includes space Windows reserves for caches and temporary files. Microsoft’s Storage settings guidance explains the categories and controls.
How do I check how much free space is left?
- Press Windows + E to open File Explorer, or select File Explorer from the taskbar.
- Select This PC in the left pane.
- Check the capacity and free-space indicators shown for each drive.
This view is the quickest way to check remaining space, but it does not provide the category-level detail available in Storage settings. Microsoft’s Windows 10 drive-space instructions describe this route.
How do I check storage on another drive?
In Settings, go to System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Storage used on other drives, then select the drive you want to inspect. Storage Sense works on the Windows system drive, usually C:, so use this separate view when you want to examine a different drive.

Which Windows 10 storage view should I use?

How do I review files before deleting them?
Use Disk Cleanup for a manual review
- Search the taskbar for Disk Cleanup and open it.
- Choose a drive and inspect the listed file categories.
- If needed, select Clean up system files to review system-level entries as well.
- Select only the categories you intend to remove, then confirm the cleanup.
Disk Cleanup is a cleanup tool, not a separate disk analyzer: use Storage settings to find broad categories of use, then review Disk Cleanup’s descriptions before removing files. Microsoft’s Disk Cleanup instructions cover its manual review steps.
Configure Storage Sense for selected automatic cleanup
Open Start > Settings > System > Storage and configure Storage Sense. It can remove selected temporary files and Recycle Bin contents. Downloads and OneDrive are not cleaned unless you enable those choices. Review the options carefully before turning on automatic cleanup; Storage Sense is not an independent analyzer.

What should I check when a drive is nearly full?
- Start with the Storage category breakdown and identify the largest category.
- Inspect personal files and installed apps before enabling automated deletion.
- Review file descriptions in Disk Cleanup before selecting anything to remove.
- Do not rely on a universal safe free-space percentage: Microsoft does not specify one threshold that applies to every Windows 10 device.
