First, search for the app: it may still be installed in App Library, on a hidden Home Screen page, or—in iOS 18 and later—in the authenticated Hidden folder. If it was deleted, you may be able to download it again from the App Store.
1. Search for the app first

From the Home Screen, swipe down from the middle of the screen. On iOS 16 and later, you can also tap the Search field at the bottom of the Home Screen.

Type the app’s name. If it appears, tap its icon to open it. Search can find apps on hidden Home Screen pages too. Apple’s missing-app guidance describes these search options.

2. Show a hidden Home Screen page
If Search finds the app but you want its page visible again, check whether that page is hidden. Apps on a hidden page remain installed and can still be found in App Library.

Touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen until the icons begin to jiggle.

Tap Edit, then Edit Pages. Depending on your iOS version, you may instead be able to tap the page dots near the bottom of the screen.

Tap the unchecked circle beneath the page you want to show, then tap Done.

3. Put the app back from App Library
If the app is installed but not on a visible Home Screen page, it may be in App Library. Swipe left past your Home Screen pages to open App Library, then locate the app by browsing or using its search field.

Touch and hold the app in App Library.

Drag it to the Home Screen page where you want it. Tap Done when you finish.

App Library is available in iOS 14 and later, and includes apps removed from the Home Screen. Apple’s iPhone User Guide explains App Library and Home Screen placement.

4. Check the Hidden folder in iOS 18 and later
On iOS 18 and later, an app can be hidden. Hidden apps do not appear in Search or ordinary App Library browsing, so check the Hidden folder before assuming the app was deleted.

Swipe left through your Home Screen pages to open App Library.

Scroll to Hidden, tap it, and authenticate with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.

Touch and hold the app and choose Don’t Require Face ID, or the equivalent authentication option shown on your device. The app returns to App Library; from there, drag it to the Home Screen if you want an icon there.

You can also find hidden apps at Settings > Apps > Hidden Apps, after authentication. Apple says hiding is a per-device setting and does not sync through iCloud. See Apple’s guide to hiding and finding apps. The feature and labels may differ on earlier iOS versions.

5. Redownload the app if it was deleted
Removing an icon and deleting an app are different actions. Apple Support puts it plainly: “If you remove an app from your Home Screen, it moves to App Library—it isn’t deleted.” Choosing Delete App, by contrast, removes the app and its data from the iPhone. Data already stored in iCloud—such as photos or documents saved through the app—may remain. Apple’s instructions on removing or deleting apps explain the distinction.
If you deleted the app, look for it in the App Store account area and your apps or purchase-history list, then tap the redownload control if the app is still available. Eligible App Store purchases can be downloaded again without buying them again. If you use Family Sharing, you may be able to choose a family member’s apps. Apple’s redownload guidance and iPhone User Guide provide the relevant steps and details.
6. Set where new apps appear
If newly downloaded apps keep seeming to disappear, change where future downloads are placed: open Settings > Home Screen & App Library and select Add to Home Screen rather than App Library Only. This setting controls new downloads; it does not restore an app that was already deleted. Apple documents the setting in its iPhone User Guide.
