MLflow 2.0 became available on November 15, 2022, as a major release focused on making model development, evaluation, tracking, and deployment workflows easier to manage. Its headline changes were MLflow Recipes, a stable mlflow.evaluate() API, a redesigned Tracking UI, refreshed TensorFlow and Keras integrations, and expanded model-serving capabilities. Teams upgrading from MLflow 1.x should first check the Python requirement and removed or renamed APIs.
What changed in MLflow 2.0?
MLflow 2.0 was announced by Matei Zaharia, Corey Zumar, and Jim Hibbard on November 15, 2022. The release brought together workflow improvements across the ML lifecycle rather than focusing on a single model framework.

MLflow Recipes, called MLflow Pipelines before version 2.0, are predefined, end-to-end workflows intended to help data scientists build models and move them toward production. Recipes combine solution-specific workflows with an execution engine and modular code and configuration that teams can review and adapt.

In the 2.0 announcement, the highlighted additions included classification support, improved data profiling, hyperparameter tuning, and AutoML. AutoML explores model frameworks, architectures, and parameter configurations, then logs parameters and results to MLflow Tracking so the experiments can be reproduced and reviewed.
For existing projects, the name change is also a migration concern: code using mlflow.pipelines APIs must be updated to use mlflow.recipes.
What does mlflow.evaluate() do?
In MLflow 2.0, mlflow.evaluate() was declared stable and production-ready. Given a dataset and an MLflow Model, it can generate model-performance metrics, plots, and explainability insights. It can also check whether metrics meet specified thresholds and compare a candidate model with a baseline.
That makes evaluation useful in model review and release-gate workflows: teams can define checks, inspect the evidence, and compare a proposed model with an established reference before deployment. “Production-ready” describes the API’s stability designation in the 2.0 announcement; it does not remove the need to choose suitable data, metrics, thresholds, and operational safeguards for a particular deployment.
What changed in the MLflow Tracking UI?
MLflow 2.0 redesigned the experiment page to make runs easier to identify and compare. Each run received a unique, memorable name, and users could filter and search more easily, customize which metrics, parameters, and tags appeared, and pin strong runs for later reference.
These changes are most useful when experiments produce many runs: distinctive names and configurable displays help teams locate relevant results, while pinning keeps useful candidates accessible during comparison.

What changed in integrations and model serving?
The release refreshed TensorFlow and Keras integrations around a common interface. For serving, the model-scoring REST API gained richer request and response formats, including support for prediction confidence intervals and multiple output fields. The upgraded Tracking Server also centralized artifact management out of the box.

These changes affect different parts of an MLflow deployment. Teams using TensorFlow or Keras should review the integration behavior in their own projects; teams consuming the scoring endpoint should check whether their clients expect the older request or response shape; and teams operating the Tracking Server should account for how their artifacts are managed.
How should you upgrade from MLflow 1.x to 2.0?
MLflow 2.0.1 migration notes document breaking changes that 1.x users should check before upgrading. Treat the release as an application and infrastructure migration, not only a package-version change.
- Check the Python runtime. MLflow 2.0 dropped Python 3.7 support; use Python 3.8 or later.
- Update Pipelines imports and calls. Replace uses of
mlflow.pipelinesAPIs withmlflow.recipes. - Find removed REST routes. Preview Tracking and Model Registry REST routes were removed; identify any clients, scripts, or integrations that call them and move to supported routes.
- Replace removed APIs. Deprecated list APIs and the deprecated
MlflowClient.download_artifactsAPI were removed. Search application code and automation for their use before changing the environment. - Test the whole workflow on the target version. Exercise application code, deployment manifests, scheduled jobs, API clients, and any experiment or registry automation in a test environment before upgrading production.
The 2.0.1 notes are the relevant migration reference for these listed removals and the Python-version floor: MLflow 2.0.1 upgrade notes.
Should you use managed MLflow or run it yourself?
MLflow 2.0’s features do not determine whether a team should host MLflow itself or use a managed offering. The choice depends on who will operate the service and how it fits the team’s security and data environment.

| Decision area | Self-managed MLflow | Managed MLflow |
|---|---|---|
| Operational burden | Your team operates the tracking service and its supporting infrastructure. | The provider operates some or all of the service; confirm which responsibilities remain yours. |
| Security and access controls | Your team configures and maintains access controls and security practices. | Evaluate the provider’s controls against your requirements. |
| Metadata and artifacts | Your team selects and maintains metadata and artifact storage. | Check how the service stores, governs, and lets you access metadata and artifacts. |
| Upgrades | Your team plans and applies version upgrades. | Confirm how upgrades are scheduled, managed, and communicated. |
| Platform integration | Your team integrates MLflow with the surrounding data and infrastructure stack. | Assess how well the offering fits the platform and workflows you already use. |
| Total cost | Account for infrastructure and the time required to operate it. | Compare the provider’s terms and charges with your operating costs; current pricing is not established here. |
Databricks is one managed MLflow context, but a provider’s existence alone is not enough to establish that it is the right fit. Compare operational responsibility, controls, storage, upgrades, platform fit, and total cost against your own requirements before deciding.
