Apple still labels iPhone Clean Energy Charging “U.S. only.” The company has not publicly explained why it remains limited to the contiguous United States for consumers. Its documentation does show that the feature depends on local electricity-grid emissions forecasts and familiar charging locations—but those requirements are relevant context, not a confirmed explanation for the geographic limit.
What Clean Energy Charging does
Clean Energy Charging uses a forecast of carbon emissions on the local electricity grid to time an iPhone charge for periods when cleaner electricity production is expected. It is not a fixed overnight schedule: the iPhone may pause charging if a cleaner period is forecast soon and it expects the battery to reach full charge before you unplug it. If a local forecast is unavailable, the phone charges normally. Apple says the feature is on by default in supported locations. Apple’s iPhone charging guide describes the behavior and labels the feature “U.S. only.”

You can temporarily resume charging if you need a full battery sooner, or turn the feature off in Settings. It also works alongside Optimized Battery Charging rather than replacing it.
Why the restriction is still unexplained
Apple’s public support and environmental documents confirm the U.S. limitation but do not give a reason for it. Apple says the feature relies on local-grid emissions forecasts and location context. That makes forecast availability and regional grid integration plausible operational considerations, but Apple has not identified them as the cause of the restriction.

Apple’s Product Use Electricity Strategy, published in June 2024, says it planned to keep evolving the feature and incorporate additional data sets. The document also discusses WattTime marginal-emissions and curtailment data for the separate Grid Forecast in the Home app. Neither statement says that a data gap or integration issue is why iPhone Clean Energy Charging is not offered elsewhere. The sources likewise do not establish regulation, privacy law, or utility partnerships as the reason.
What the rollout record shows
- Fall 2022: Apple says iPhone Clean Energy Charging launched in the contiguous U.S. Apple’s 2024 strategy document describes the launch.
- 2025: Apple says it expanded the feature to iPhone and iPad demo devices in Apple retail and channel-partner stores across the contiguous U.S. Its 2026 Environmental Progress Report describes this store-device expansion; it is not an announcement of international consumer availability.
- Current consumer guidance: Apple’s iPhone charging guide continues to mark the feature “U.S. only.”
Apple’s broader clean-energy activity is global in scope, but it does not establish that this particular local, time-sensitive charging forecast is available globally. In April 2024, Apple said it had pledged to match every watt of charging electricity with clean electricity by 2030, including through investments in markets around the world. That is a company goal, not a measured result or a promise to expand Clean Energy Charging internationally. Apple’s announcement discusses the broader commitment.

What the feature needs to work
Apple’s support guidance says the feature is available with iOS 16.1 and later and works only at places where you regularly charge for long periods, such as home or work. It may not engage if your charging routine varies or you are somewhere new. For the local forecast, Apple says Location Services, System Customization, and Significant Locations & Routes must be enabled. Apple also says the location information used for this feature is not sent to Apple. Apple’s developer material offers further context, not a cause for the geographic restriction. Its 2025 EnergyKit session describes electricity guidance drawing on a home location and local grid information, such as emissions or renewable generation, with utility account information where available. That developer use case and the Home app’s Grid Forecast are distinct from the iPhone consumer feature.

What you can do now
- Leave it enabled: In Settings, go to Battery > Battery Health & Charging and keep Clean Energy Charging on. Where supported, the iPhone can use its forecast and routine to shift charging toward cleaner periods.
- Resume charging sooner: If the phone pauses and you need a full charge, use the charging notification or the charging controls to choose the option to resume charging now. The exact prompt can vary with the iOS version.
- Turn it off: Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging and switch off Clean Energy Charging. Charging will then proceed without this feature’s forecast-based timing.
If the option is missing, Apple’s current guide identifies the feature as U.S.-only; changing chargers or cables will not make the local forecast available in an unsupported region.

Apple has not announced an international consumer rollout in the cited support, strategy, or environmental-report materials. Its stated intention to evolve the feature is not a rollout timetable. Until Apple provides a direct explanation or announces broader availability, the accurate answer to “why?” is that the reason has not been made public.
