A software device driver is software that enables an operating system to communicate with a device. It translates or handles operating-system requests in a way the device or another software component can act on, then helps return results. Not every driver controls physical hardware, and not all drivers run in kernel mode.
What a device driver does
When an application asks to use a device, it normally makes that request through the operating system rather than addressing the hardware directly. The operating system calls the appropriate driver, which knows how to communicate with the device or perform its part of the communication. Results travel back through the driver and operating system to the application.

Real systems may use several drivers in a stack, with higher-level components passing requests to lower-level ones. A driver also does not have to come from the hardware maker: for hardware that follows a published standard, Microsoft may provide a compatible driver. Does every driver control physical hardware?
No. Some drivers are software-only: they participate in operating-system communication or handle input/output without forwarding requests to a physical device. For example, Microsoft documents software drivers used with a user-mode application when a kernel-mode component needs access to core operating-system data. In Windows, even a software-only kernel-mode driver represents its target with a device object; that object does not mean the driver controls a physical device.

Where drivers run: Windows user mode and kernel mode
Windows drivers can run in user mode or kernel mode. User-mode drivers often provide an interface between an application and kernel-mode drivers or other operating-system components. Kernel-mode drivers share an address space with core operating-system components. Because of that access, a faulty kernel-mode driver can corrupt operating-system data or crash the system. These are Windows-specific terms and roles; other operating systems use their own driver models.

How Windows driver roles differ
Windows may organize drivers in layers. These labels describe roles in that Windows model, not universal categories for every operating system.

|---|---|
| Function driver | Controls a particular peripheral or provides its main device functionality. |
| Filter driver | Adds to, changes, or observes processing in a driver stack. |
| Bus driver | Supports devices connected through a bus or exposes child devices connected to it. |
Other drivers can implement higher-level functions, such as file systems. A device stack can combine multiple roles so that each component handles part of the work. Microsoft’s Windows driver types documentation describes these roles and their layering.

Driver models vary by operating system
The Windows terms above should not be applied automatically to Linux. Linux has its own device and driver model. For example, Linux platform-device discovery and binding are handled outside the driver; driver callbacks such as probe() and remove() participate in the platform device’s lifecycle. A Linux driver is represented by a structure for the driver as a whole and may support multiple devices.
