Apple augmented reality (AR) means using Apple’s sensing and display technologies to place digital content in relation to the physical world. On iPhone and iPad, that often looks like virtual objects positioned in a live camera view. On Apple Vision Pro, apps can place digital windows and objects in the wearer’s surroundings, or create more immersive scenes.
What does Apple mean by augmented reality?
Apple defines AR as an experience that adds two-dimensional or three-dimensional elements to a live view from a device’s sensors so those elements appear to inhabit the real world. The important distinction is that the digital content is situated in relation to the environment; simply showing an image or 3D model on a screen is not, by itself, the defining feature.

What is ARKit?
ARKit is Apple’s developer framework for building AR experiences. It brings together capabilities such as device-motion tracking, world tracking and scene understanding, helping an app place content and support interaction between virtual objects and the surroundings. It is not a consumer headset or a single AR app; it is technology developers can use to create features in apps.

On iPhone and iPad, ARKit supports both the presentation of AR content onscreen and interaction between that content and the environment. Apple’s design guidance advises developers to offer AR features only on devices that support ARKit, so the specific experience depends on the device and app.
How is iPhone or iPad AR different from visionOS?
The main difference is how digital content is presented. Mobile AR commonly uses a live camera view as the backdrop. In visionOS, app content can be placed within the person’s surroundings without relying on that same camera-view presentation. Apple calls Vision Pro a spatial-computing platform: visionOS experiences can combine windows, 3D content and fully immersive scenes. Spatial computing is broader than camera-overlay AR, so not every visionOS experience is best described as AR.

These are broad platform distinctions, not guarantees that every app uses the same presentation or sensing features. Apple’s visionOS overview explains its spatial-computing framing, while its ARKit in visionOS documentation describes the framework’s role on that platform.

No. Apple AR describes a kind of experience and the technologies that support it, not one particular product. Vision Pro is a physical device that runs visionOS; it is one way to experience Apple’s spatial-computing approach. ARKit is a developer framework used to build experiences, including on supported iPhone and iPad devices. A person does not need a headset merely to understand the meaning of Apple AR.
