5G Internet access is Internet connectivity delivered over a fifth-generation mobile wireless network. It can connect a phone or other mobile device, or a provider can use the same kind of network to deliver fixed wireless service to a home or business. The term identifies an access technology—not a particular speed, coverage area, plan, or compatible device.
What does “5G” mean?
In everyday use, 5G means the fifth generation of mobile broadband networks and related services. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) relates current 5G networks and services broadly to its IMT-2020 framework. However, the ITU distinguishes that framework from the marketing label: it says it does not define “5G” itself or determine how a technology is labelled for marketing.

For the U.S. Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC’s) broadband data collection, 5G-NR is a fifth-generation mobile wireless technology. The FCC describes mobile wireless broadband as Internet information transfer using a mobile network. Together, those definitions make the practical meaning straightforward: 5G Internet access uses a 5G mobile network to provide Internet connectivity.
How can 5G Internet access be used?
Mobile broadband
A phone, tablet, or another supported mobile device can connect to the Internet through a 5G network. This is mobile access: the connection is provided to a device using the mobile network, rather than being sold specifically for one fixed address.

- 【Reliable & Uninterrupted Internet】The RM520N 5G Cellular Router with multi-WAN technology lets users utilize multiple connection methods, including Ethernet, Repeater, Cellular, and Tethering; Load-balancing capabilities let users distribute bandwidth by custom proportion among multiple connection methods; Supports Network Failover and the option to configure Failover priorities among multiple connection methods.
Fixed wireless access for a home or business
A provider can also use a 5G-NR network to sell Internet service for a fixed location. This is commonly called 5G fixed wireless access (FWA): the connection reaches a home or business wirelessly instead of using a wired last-mile connection. The FCC includes service over a 4G LTE or 5G-NR mobile network when sold as a fixed solution in its licensed terrestrial fixed wireless category; see its mobile technology codes and fixed technology codes.
The phrase “5G Internet” alone does not tell you which kind of service is being offered. Check whether an offer is mobile broadband or fixed-location FWA before comparing it with another service.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
What the 5G label does—and does not—tell you
- It identifies a network generation. In the FCC’s classification, 5G-NR is fifth-generation mobile wireless technology.
- It can describe different ways of accessing the Internet. A 5G network can provide mobile broadband or support fixed wireless service, depending on the provider’s offer.
- It does not guarantee a specific performance level. The label alone does not state actual download or upload speeds, latency, or coverage at your location.
- It does not give the plan terms. Data limits, price, and other service conditions depend on the specific offer.
- It does not establish equipment compatibility. A 5G gateway or router is not guaranteed to work with every provider’s service.
To compare real offers, check the service type, availability at the relevant address, advertised and expected download and upload performance, data limits, latency claims, price, and required or compatible equipment. These details vary by provider and location; the term “5G” does not settle them.

How is 5G counted in an official subscription measure?
The ITU’s indicator for active mobile broadband subscriptions to 5G/IMT-2020 counts subscriptions that generated Internet traffic on a 5G/IMT-2020 mobile broadband network within the preceding 90 days. It excludes subscriptions with traffic only on LTE/4G or earlier technologies. This is a statistical definition, not a measure or promise of an individual plan’s speed or quality; the methodology is documented in the ITU’s 5G/IMT-2020 indicator methodology.
