Session fixation is a real risk for APIs and web apps when an attacker can get a victim to use a session identifier the attacker already knows, then the application keeps that identifier valid after login. Properly implemented rotation at authentication does stop that core attack: invalidate the pre-login identifier, issue a fresh one, and reject the old one for protected requests. Rotation does not prevent every way an attacker might arrange or steal a token, so it must sit alongside strict session handling and other protections.

What is API session fixation?

Session fixation is an attack in which the attacker knows or chooses a session identifier before the victim authenticates. The attacker tries to make the victim’s client use that identifier. If the application reuses it after the victim logs in, the attacker may be able to use the same identifier to access the victim’s authenticated session.

A session ID is a bearer-like reference: the client sends it, and the server uses it to recover session state. The identifier need not contain a username, role, or other readable information to be dangerous. Its value comes from what the server permits a holder to do.

Fixation differs from ordinary session hijacking. In hijacking, the attacker obtains an identifier that already belongs to an authenticated user. In fixation, the attacker knows the identifier first and attempts to get the application to adopt it across the victim’s login. The vulnerable transition is the important part: a known pre-authentication ID must not become the authenticated ID.

How does a session fixation attack work?

The attack has a setup phase before login and an outcome after login. OWASP describes three ways an attacker may try to establish the setup: a URL argument, a hidden form field, or a cookie-related mechanism. These are delivery routes for the same underlying weakness, not three separate vulnerability classes.

  1. Establish a known identifier. The attacker obtains or supplies a session ID and attempts to make the victim’s browser or client present it to the application.
  2. Wait for authentication. The victim signs in while that identifier is in use.
  3. Exploit reuse. If the application accepts the same ID for authenticated requests, the attacker can try to present their known ID and reach the victim’s session.

A cookie-related route can depend on another weakness, such as script injection, that lets an attacker influence what the browser sends. That does not change the session-management failure: the application must not grant authenticated privileges to an identifier that was exposed or established before login.

Why URL and form routes matter

Putting session IDs in URLs makes them easier to expose through links, server logs, browser history, bookmarks, and referrer data. A hidden form field is not a safe secret simply because it is not visible on the rendered page; the client still carries it. OWASP recommends cookies for session exchange rather than URL arguments, but changing the transport alone does not fix reuse at authentication.

Does rotating session tokens prevent session fixation?

Yes, if “rotation” means the application invalidates the old pre-authentication ID, creates a new unpredictable ID after successful authentication, and refuses the old ID for authenticated requests. This blocks the defining fixation outcome: an identifier known before login cannot remain the identifier that authorizes the logged-in session.

Rotation is not a cure-all. It does not stop an attacker from trying to arrange a pre-login identifier, stealing the newly issued authenticated identifier, exploiting script injection, or taking advantage of weak token generation. The accurate distinction is that rotation blocks the carryover from known pre-login ID to authenticated session; it does not eliminate the surrounding attack surface.

What must happen at the login boundary?

Treat successful authentication as a session boundary, not as a label change on the existing session. The application should destroy or invalidate the pre-authentication ID and issue a different ID after authentication. Protected requests should be accepted only with the current ID. If the old ID remains valid in parallel, changing the client’s cookie or token alone is not enough.

Apply the same principle after privilege changes, such as role elevation or permission changes: renew the identifier and ensure the old one cannot continue to access protected resources. OWASP’s testing guidance says to renew the session token after a user successfully authenticates; its session-management guidance also recommends strict acceptance of IDs generated by the application.

Rotation versus other controls

Control What it addresses What it does not replace
Invalidate the pre-login ID and issue a new ID after authentication Prevents a known unauthenticated ID from becoming the authenticated session ID Protection against theft of the new ID or other weaknesses
Strict session handling Ensures the server accepts only session IDs it generated Renewal at authentication and privilege changes
Secure cookie attributes and TLS Reduce exposure of session identifiers in the browser and in transit Server-side invalidation of old identifiers
Unpredictable identifiers Makes guessing or predicting IDs harder Preventing reuse of an ID already known to an attacker
Server-side idle and absolute timeouts Limit how long inactive or old sessions remain usable Correct renewal at the authentication boundary

How should an API handle session identifiers?

An API may rely on browser cookies or another client-carried token, but the core requirement is the same: the server must control which identifier represents the authenticated session. Keep authorization and session meaning on the server rather than encoding sensitive session state in the identifier. Do not accept arbitrary client-supplied values as valid sessions merely because they are syntactically well-formed.

When browser cookies carry the identifier, use the Secure attribute so the browser sends it only over HTTPS, and use HttpOnly to prevent scripts from reading it through browser APIs. These protections help guard the client-held token; neither one invalidates the pre-login session on the server. Prefer cookies over URL-carried IDs because URLs can be copied, recorded, or exposed through ordinary browsing behavior.

How do I test whether a site is vulnerable to session fixation?

For an application you own or are authorized to assess, compare the session state before and after login, then check whether the old state still authorizes a protected action. OWASP’s Web Security Testing Guide v4.2 describes a black-box test based on capturing cookies before login, authenticating, restoring the earlier cookie state, and attempting a protected operation.

  1. Start with a clean test account and session. Use a controlled environment or account, and record the session cookie or other session identifier before signing in.
  2. Authenticate normally. Complete the login flow and record the identifier the client presents afterward.
  3. Compare the values. A safe implementation should replace the pre-login session ID at successful authentication.
  4. Restore the old state in the test client. Send the pre-login cookie state to the application instead of the post-login state.
  5. Attempt a protected operation. Check whether the old identifier still grants access to authenticated data or actions. Do not use a destructive action for this check.

If the pre-login identifier still authorizes a protected request, the session was not safely replaced. A changed cookie is not sufficient evidence by itself: the decisive check is whether the old ID has ceased to authorize access. Keep this assessment within an authorized test scope; testing other people’s accounts or systems without permission is not appropriate.

What should developers monitor and expire?

Set server-side idle and absolute timeouts so sessions do not remain usable indefinitely. Renewal timers can rotate IDs during long sessions, but periodic renewal is not a substitute for renewal at authentication. Reauthentication after risk events can provide another check when the consequences of a compromised session are high.

Record useful lifecycle events such as session creation, renewal, and destruction, but do not place raw session IDs in logs. OWASP suggests using a salted hash when session identifiers need to be correlated in logs. This supports investigation without creating an easy store of reusable bearer credentials.

What does a secure implementation checklist look like?

  • Generate session IDs securely and unpredictably through a well-maintained framework or session-management component.
  • Accept only IDs generated by the application; reject arbitrary client-supplied identifiers as valid sessions.
  • At successful authentication, invalidate the pre-login ID and issue a different ID.
  • Ensure the old ID cannot access protected resources after login or a privilege change.
  • Prefer cookies to URL session IDs, use Secure and HttpOnly where browser cookies are used, and protect transport with TLS.
  • Keep authorization state server-side; use idle and absolute server-side expiration.
  • Renew identifiers after privilege changes, consider reauthentication after risk events, and log lifecycle events without logging raw IDs.

OWASP’s guidance is concise: “Implement a session token renewal after a user successfully authenticates.” The operational detail behind that sentence matters: renewal must include invalidation of the previous ID and server-side rejection of that ID on protected requests.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can session fixation affect a mobile app or API client without a browser?

It can if the client carries a session identifier that an attacker can arrange or know before login and the server keeps that identifier valid afterward. Browser-specific delivery routes may not apply, but the key question remains whether the server replaces the identifier at authentication.

Is session fixation the same as stealing an access token?

No. Fixation starts with an identifier known before the victim authenticates; token theft usually means obtaining a credential that is already in use. Both can lead to unauthorized access, but they call for checking different parts of the session lifecycle.

Should session IDs appear in application logs?

Avoid logging raw IDs because they function like bearer credentials. If operational troubleshooting requires correlating lifecycle events, OWASP recommends a salted hash rather than the usable identifier itself.
