An API gateway, load balancer, and reverse proxy can all sit between clients and your services, but they solve different primary problems. A reverse proxy forwards and hides backend services; a load balancer distributes connections or requests across healthy backends; an API gateway adds API-specific controls such as authentication, quotas, validation, transformations, and consumer analytics. The roles overlap, so one product can perform two or all three. Choose according to the requirement you must enforce, and combine components only when each adds a distinct function.

What is the difference between an API gateway, a load balancer, and a reverse proxy?

The shortest accurate distinction is forwarding, distribution, and API policy. A reverse proxy is the broad intermediary role. A load balancer is a traffic-distribution role. An API gateway is an API-focused policy and lifecycle layer that usually operates as a reverse proxy.

Component Primary job Typical decisions What it does not automatically imply
Reverse proxy Accept client traffic and forward it to an internal service Host or path routing, TLS termination, caching, header handling, backend concealment A consistent API authentication, quota, transformation, or consumer-analytics model
Load balancer Select a healthy backend from a pool and distribute traffic Health checks, balancing algorithms, weights, locality, failover, connection handling API keys, request schemas, developer plans, or full API lifecycle management
API gateway Expose and govern APIs through a controlled entry point Authentication, authorization, rate limits, quotas, validation, transformation, API analytics, protocol integration Traditional balancing of many nodes for one service; that depends on the product

These are operating models rather than mutually exclusive product categories. A Layer 7 load balancer can route by URL and terminate TLS. A reverse proxy can distribute requests. An API gateway normally proxies requests and may include balancing. Always identify the implementation, protocol layer, and deployment mode before assuming a feature is present.

How does a reverse proxy work?

A reverse proxy receives a request on behalf of one or more services, decides where it belongs, and opens or reuses a connection to the selected backend. The client sees the proxy address instead of the internal service topology. Microsoft describes the role plainly: “It acts as a reverse proxy and routes clients requests to the appropriate services.”

What a reverse proxy is good at

  • Controlled forwarding: expose one hostname while keeping service addresses private.
  • Host and path routing: send api.example.test/orders and api.example.test/catalog to different services.
  • TLS termination: handle certificates at the edge and forward traffic internally according to your security design.
  • Caching and compression: serve cacheable responses or reduce transfer size before traffic reaches an application.
  • Connection and header policy: normalize headers, set timeouts, and control WebSocket or HTTP connection behavior.
  • Optional balancing: many reverse-proxy products can select among several upstream servers.

Where a reverse proxy stops

“Reverse proxy” describes the traffic position, not a guaranteed feature set. Authentication, rate limiting, request transformation, and analytics vary by product and configuration. A simple forwarding proxy may have no API consumer model at all. If you need centrally enforced API keys, per-client quotas, schema validation, or a developer-facing API catalog, verify that the selected implementation supports those functions rather than inferring them from the proxy label.

What does a load balancer do?

A load balancer’s defining responsibility is to distribute traffic across healthy backend instances or pools. It runs health checks, applies a selection algorithm, and removes failed or unavailable targets so that new traffic can reach functioning capacity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How health checks and selection work

Health checks can test a TCP connection, an HTTP status, or an application-specific endpoint, depending on the product and mode. Once a target is considered healthy, the balancer may use round robin, least connections, hashing, weights, locality, or another algorithm. These choices affect stickiness, failover, and how evenly traffic is spread. A health check proves only that the tested condition works; it does not guarantee that every user operation will succeed.

What is the difference between Layer 4 and Layer 7 load balancing?

Characteristic Layer 4 Layer 7
Traffic awareness TCP, UDP, or other IP-level connections HTTP(S) requests and application attributes
Routing inputs Address, port, connection metadata, or flow Host, path, method, headers, cookies, and other request fields when supported
Application understanding Low; it generally does not parse HTTP semantics Higher; it can make request-aware routing decisions
Typical reason to choose it High-throughput transport balancing, non-HTTP protocols, or minimal application interference HTTP routing, content-aware policies, and application-level controls
Connection behavior May preserve or forward flows with limited termination, depending on mode Usually terminates client HTTP(S) connections and creates backend connections

Choose Layer 4 when the protocol is TCP or UDP, when you need transport-level throughput, or when preserving packet and source information is more important than inspecting HTTP requests. Choose Layer 7 for HTTP(S) services that require host or path routing or other application-aware decisions. The product’s exact proxy, source-address, and TLS behavior still matters.

What are proxy and passthrough load balancers?

A proxy load balancer terminates the client connection and opens a separate connection to the backend. That design enables inspection, TLS termination, and request-aware controls, but the backend sees the proxy connection unless the product forwards the original client information through a trusted mechanism. A passthrough load balancer forwards packets or flows without terminating the client connection; the backend terminates the session and can retain packet-level information. Google Cloud documents both categories, and the distinction is more important than the marketing name of a particular service.

What makes an API gateway different?

An API gateway is an API-aware entry point. It combines proxying and routing with policies applied to API consumers, operations, and representations. Its value appears when an organization must enforce the same rules across many APIs or expose APIs to parties it does not fully control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which policies are commonly enforced?

  • Identity and access: validate tokens, API keys, claims, roles, or mutual-TLS identities before forwarding.
  • Traffic protection: apply per-client, per-key, per-API, or global rate limits and quotas.
  • Request validation: reject malformed parameters, payloads, or content types before application code runs.
  • Transformation: rewrite headers, map payloads, adapt versions, or translate protocols where the gateway supports it.
  • Consumer visibility: attribute calls to applications or subscribers and expose API-focused usage and error analytics.
  • API lifecycle controls: publish versions, separate products or plans, and document or govern the public surface.

These controls are broader than selecting a healthy backend. They answer “who may call this operation, how often, with what shape, and how do we measure use?” A gateway may also integrate directly with services or other protocols instead of simply balancing identical instances.

Does an API gateway replace a load balancer?

Not automatically. Amazon’s API Gateway documentation distinguishes API publication, security, request validation, keys, throttling, SDK generation, and direct integrations from traditional balancing among multiple downstream nodes of one service. Some gateway products can select among upstreams, but that does not mean they provide the same health-check depth, transport protocols, capacity behavior, or global distribution features as a dedicated load balancer. Confirm the gateway’s documented balancing and failover capabilities before removing another component.

Are these components mutually exclusive?

No. They can be separate layers or capabilities in one product. The right architecture depends on whether edge distribution and API policy are independent requirements.

Common composed pattern

  1. Global or regional load balancer: accepts external traffic, selects an available region or ingress pool, and provides edge TLS or other perimeter controls.
  2. API gateway: authenticates the consumer, applies quotas and validation, transforms requests when needed, and records API-level analytics.
  3. Internal reverse proxy or service router: routes to services inside a cluster or network and keeps internal topology changeable.
  4. Service instances: handle business operations and data access.

Azure describes API Management as primarily an API gateway rather than a general-purpose load balancer and documents pairing it with an application gateway or another balancer. Google documents integrating an API gateway with global or classic application load balancers to provide a common entry point, custom domains, TLS, and multi-region routing. The exact products and order vary, but each layer should have a named responsibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a single component is enough

A reverse proxy may be sufficient for a small internal application that needs TLS termination and path routing. A managed Layer 7 load balancer may cover ingress, health checks, and simple HTTP routing for a service that has no consumer-facing API policy. An API gateway alone may be appropriate when its own proxying, integration, and availability model meets the traffic and backend requirements. Adding layers without distinct controls increases configuration, latency, failure modes, and operational cost.

Should I put an API gateway in front of a load balancer?

Use both when the load balancer must solve edge distribution and the gateway must solve API consumer policy. Do not add a gateway merely because your services are distributed.

Use both when these requirements are separate

  • Traffic must be routed globally or across regions, while quotas and authentication are enforced per API consumer.
  • Non-API workloads share the same edge balancer, but public APIs need validation, keys, or version policies.
  • The gateway is internal to a region or cluster, while an edge service handles public TLS, denial-of-service controls, or locality.
  • Different teams own network ingress and API products and need an explicit contract between them.

Prefer one layer when duplication adds no value

If both products terminate TLS, authenticate, rate-limit, rewrite headers, and emit overlapping logs, decide which layer is authoritative for each policy. Duplicated limits can reject requests unexpectedly; duplicated retries can amplify outages; and inconsistent client-IP handling can break audit trails. Document the request path, timeout budget, retry owner, and source-address header trust at every hop.

Can NGINX replace an API gateway?

NGINX can act as a reverse proxy, terminate TLS, route at Layer 7, cache responses, and balance upstreams. Whether it replaces an API gateway depends on the API controls, consumer lifecycle, integrations, and observability you require, not on the product name.

Requirement Reverse-proxy configuration may cover it Gateway-oriented capability may still be needed
Host or path routing Yes, when configured Usually not necessary
TLS termination Yes, when configured Not inherently required
Balancing identical upstream instances Often available Verify health checks and failover depth
JWT or identity enforcement Depends on modules and configuration Centralized consumer policy may be easier in a gateway
Per-consumer quotas, API keys, and plans Product- and configuration-specific Common gateway focus
Schema validation and version lifecycle May require custom modules or external systems Often built into API-management products
Developer analytics and API catalog Not implied by reverse proxying Typical gateway concern

A carefully managed reverse-proxy configuration can implement many gateway-like controls, but the operational burden becomes yours: policy consistency, key issuance, consumer reporting, version management, and safe configuration rollout. Conversely, a gateway may not provide the transport protocols, throughput model, or global balancing behavior you need. Compare the actual feature set and operating model rather than asking whether one brand “is” another category.

How should I choose Layer 4 or Layer 7?

Start with the protocol and connection behavior, then decide how much application awareness is worth the added processing and configuration.

  1. Identify the protocol. HTTP and HTTPS point toward Layer 7 when request attributes matter. TCP, UDP, or another IP protocol points toward Layer 4 unless an application-aware proxy explicitly supports it.
  2. Decide who terminates TLS. Termination at the balancer enables HTTP inspection and policy there; passthrough leaves termination to the backend and may preserve end-to-end control.
  3. Check source-information requirements. Passthrough can preserve packet-level client information. A proxy design requires a documented, trusted forwarding mechanism if applications need the original address.
  4. Define routing inputs. If host, path, method, header, or cookie routing is required, use a Layer 7 mode that documents those attributes.
  5. Specify health checks and failover. Match checks to the real service readiness condition and define regional, zonal, or pool failover behavior.
  6. Measure operational constraints. Include connection limits, timeout and retry behavior, observability, configuration ownership, and the effect of another proxy hop.

Layer selection is not a quality ranking. Layer 7 is not automatically better, and Layer 4 is not automatically faster for every workload. The correct choice is the least application awareness that still satisfies the protocol, routing, security, and source-preservation requirements.

What should I compare when evaluating products?

Compare implementations against the same traffic path and policy requirements. Category labels hide important differences in termination, health checking, and management.

Comparison axis Questions to ask
Traffic layer and protocols Does it support TCP, UDP, HTTP(S), WebSocket, or the exact protocol you operate?
Primary responsibility Is the product optimized for forwarding, backend distribution, or API consumer policy?
Backend selection Which health checks, algorithms, weights, locality rules, and failover scopes are available?
Security Where do TLS, WAF functions, authentication, authorization, mutual TLS, and rate limits run?
API controls Are validation, transformations, quotas, keys, protocol translation, and consumer analytics native or custom?
Connection behavior Does it proxy or pass through? Are client addresses preserved, translated, or forwarded in headers?
Deployment scope Is it global, regional, internal, cluster-local, or service-local, and can that scope meet your failure model?
Operations Is it managed or self-managed? How are configuration, certificates, logs, metrics, upgrades, and rollbacks handled?
Cost and availability What are the current regional limits, pricing rules, quotas, and feature availability for the exact edition and mode?

Feature availability is product-specific. Name the provider, product, protocol layer, and deployment mode in design documents so that a future operator does not mistake a capability of one mode for a guarantee of the whole category.

What failure modes appear when these layers are combined?

Most incidents come from conflicting connection, identity, or retry assumptions between layers. Test the complete path rather than each component in isolation.

Health checks pass but users fail

A shallow TCP or status-code check can mark a service healthy while dependencies, authentication, or a critical operation is broken. Use a lightweight readiness endpoint that reflects the capacity you intend to receive, and keep expensive business transactions out of the health probe.

Client identity is lost or spoofable

Each proxy hop can change the source address. Define one trusted mechanism for forwarding client identity, strip untrusted incoming values at the edge, and configure applications to trust headers only from known proxy addresses. If packet preservation is mandatory, evaluate passthrough rather than assuming a header is equivalent.

Retries multiply load

A gateway, load balancer, and client library may each retry. One failed request can become several backend attempts, especially during partial outages. Assign retry ownership to one layer, bound the total timeout, and make operations idempotent before enabling automatic retries.

TLS and routing disagree

When TLS terminates at one layer and HTTP routing occurs at another, verify certificate names, forwarded protocol headers, redirects, and backend encryption. A mismatch can create redirect loops, incorrect absolute URLs, or accidental plaintext on an internal segment.

Limits are enforced twice

Two rate-limiters with different keys or windows can produce confusing 429 responses. Decide whether limits are global, per API, per credential, or per network identity, then publish the authoritative response headers and logging location.

How do I document a reliable request path?

Write the path as an explicit contract so that teams can reason about policy and troubleshooting without relying on product terminology.

  1. Record the public hostname, protocol, and first terminating component.
  2. List every hop in order, including global, regional, cluster, and service-local proxies.
  3. For each hop, state whether it proxies or passes through, which headers it adds or removes, and whether it retries.
  4. Identify the component responsible for authentication, authorization, quotas, validation, TLS renewal, and access logging.
  5. Describe health checks, backend pools, balancing algorithms, and failover triggers.
  6. Define timeout budgets and the maximum number of attempts from client to service.
  7. Test normal traffic, an unhealthy backend, an expired credential, an oversized or invalid request, a regional failure, and a client disconnect.

This document is more useful than calling every intermediary an “API gateway” or “load balancer.” It tells operators what will happen to a specific request and where to look when the result is unexpected.

Which architecture fits common scenarios?

One internal HTTP application

Use a reverse proxy or Layer 7 load balancer for TLS termination and host or path routing. Add an API gateway only if internal consumers need centrally managed identity, quotas, validation, or API analytics.

Many identical service instances in one region

Make health-checked load balancing the primary concern. A Layer 4 mode suits non-HTTP traffic; a Layer 7 mode suits HTTP routing. A reverse proxy may provide the same function when its health and failover behavior is sufficient.

Public APIs consumed by multiple applications

Use an API gateway when consumer credentials, per-application limits, schema validation, transformations, and API-level reporting are requirements. Put an edge balancer in front when global or regional ingress distribution is a separate need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mixed protocols behind one address

Keep protocol-specific handling explicit. A Layer 4 entry point may be required for TCP or UDP, while HTTP APIs can use a Layer 7 gateway on a separate listener or hostname. Do not force every workload through an HTTP-only gateway.

Multi-region public service

Use a global or regional distribution layer to choose an available location, then apply API policy at the gateway closest to the service boundary. Confirm how health, DNS or anycast behavior, TLS, and consumer limits interact across regions.

What are the practical pros and trade-offs?

Choice Strengths Trade-offs
Reverse proxy Flexible forwarding, TLS termination, routing, caching, and topology concealment API policy and analytics may require custom configuration or additional systems
Load balancer Health-based distribution, failover, and support for transport or application traffic API consumer lifecycle and deep request policy may be outside its scope
API gateway Centralized identity, quotas, validation, transformations, integrations, and API observability May not replace specialized global, transport-level, or high-throughput balancing
Combined layers Clear separation between edge distribution and API governance More hops, configuration, latency, logging complexity, and potential policy conflicts

The strongest design is not the one with the most components. It is the one in which every hop has a reason to exist, an owner, measurable health signals, and a tested failure behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a reverse proxy always hide the backend IP address?

It normally prevents clients from connecting directly to the addresses used behind the proxy, but network exposure depends on firewall rules, DNS, and whether backends are reachable by another route. Treat concealment as an architectural property to verify, not an automatic security boundary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where should authentication happen when there are several proxies?

Place the authoritative API authentication check at the gateway or another explicitly designated policy layer, and document whether earlier layers perform only coarse filtering. Ensure downstream services still verify any identity assertions they trust and accept them only from authenticated, trusted hops.

Can one load balancer serve both internal and internet-facing traffic?

Some products support separate frontends or listeners, while others require distinct internal and external modes. Check the implementation’s network scope, address type, routing domain, and access-control model; do not assume that sharing a product means sharing a security boundary.

How does a gateway affect API version migrations?

A gateway can route versions by hostname, path, header, or consumer policy and can sometimes transform requests between contracts. Plan deprecation notices, observability by version, and a rollback path; routing alone does not make incompatible payloads safe.
