Verdict: The Anycubic Photon P1 MAX is a large-format resin printer for users who genuinely need its 285.5 × 214 × 300 mm build volume. Its 12K monochrome LCD, heated 1,900 ml vat, locking build plate and Wave Release system make it unusually well equipped, but the machine also demands the full resin workflow: ventilation, protective equipment, washing, drying, UV curing and careful handling of solvent waste. If you only print small models, a smaller printer such as the Photon P1 is likely easier to justify. If you need large single-piece parts or more objects per build, the MAX’s capacity is its main reason to buy.
This assessment is based on Matt Farmer’s Tom’s Hardware review, published September 7, 2026. The review’s prices, coupon and firmware observations are snapshots from that tested unit and date; verify current listings, updates and compatibility before buying.

The Photon P1 MAX is a large-format masked stereolithography (MSLA) resin 3D printer. Instead of extruding plastic filament, it selectively cures liquid photopolymer resin layer by layer with a monochrome LCD and light engine. The result can be highly detailed, but every print must be washed, dried and UV-cured before it is ready for normal handling.
Tom’s Hardware lists a 12K monochrome LCD, a COB light source with a reflector and aspherical Fresnel lens, 24.8 × 24.8 micrometre X/Y resolution and a normal exposure time of 2.0 seconds. The printer has USB and Wi-Fi connectivity, a 4.5-inch resistive touchscreen, a 430 × 414 × 625 mm footprint and a listed weight of 23.1 kg. These are the review’s product specifications, not independent laboratory measurements. See the Tom’s Hardware review for the original test and specification context.

Core specifications
| Specification | Photon P1 MAX |
|---|---|
| Build volume | 285.5 × 214 × 300 mm (11.2 × 8.4 × 11.8 inches), according to Tom’s Hardware |
| LCD and resolution | 12K monochrome LCD; 24.8 × 24.8 μm X/Y resolution |
| Normal exposure | 2.0 seconds, as listed in the review |
| Optical system | COB light source, reflector and aspherical Fresnel lens |
| Vat | 1,900 ml capacity; review reports temperature maintained at 35°C (95°F) |
| Connectivity | USB and Wi-Fi |
| Controls | 4.5-inch resistive touchscreen |
| Printer size and mass | 430 × 414 × 625 mm footprint; 23.1 kg |
The build volume is the consequential number. It is large enough for sizable figures, masks and functional parts that would require splitting on a compact resin printer. It also allows more objects in one batch, although resin use, support generation and post-processing rise with the number and size of parts.
Who should buy the P1 MAX?
Buy it when the large envelope changes what you can print, not simply because a larger specification sheet looks attractive. The MAX suits makers producing large props, helmets, masks, sculptures, batches of miniatures or prototypes that benefit from fewer joins.

- Up to 285.5 × 214 × 300 mm of usable build volume.
- A large vat so a tall or wide job does not require frequent refilling.
- A heated resin environment that the review reports being maintained at 35°C (95°F).
- A locking, flip-up/flip-down build-plate design and the review’s Wave Release screen-cover system.
- USB or Wi-Fi file transfer and support for Photon Workshop, Chitubox and Lychee.
Choose a smaller machine instead when:
- Your models fit comfortably in a compact resin printer’s build area.
- You want lower resin consumption and less washing and curing work.
- You lack a stable, ventilated location for a 23.1 kg machine measuring 625 mm high.
- You are not prepared to investigate firmware or leveling problems when they occur.
The review names the Photon P1 as the smaller alternative for people who do not need the MAX’s additional area. It does not provide a controlled, head-to-head test or a complete P1 specification table, so the choice should be based on your model dimensions and workflow rather than an assumed performance advantage.
How does the P1 MAX’s vat heating and Wave Release system work?
The review identifies the heated vat and Wave Release system as the printer’s standout features. It says the vat is maintained at 35°C (95°F), holds 1.9 litres and uses a Wave Release screen cover intended to reduce trapped air bubbles and make release easier. The reviewer calls Wave Release “The most unique feature on the P1 MAX.” Those are reviewer descriptions; they should not be treated as a guarantee that every resin or model will release without failures.
A 1,900 ml vat gives you room for large jobs, but it is not a reason to fill the vat completely. Resin is a chemical consumable with a limited working life once exposed to contamination, so follow the resin maker’s handling instructions and keep the vat covered when idle. The review also describes a slide-in vat and a drop tray, features that can make removal and cleanup less awkward than lifting a loose container over the screen.
What arrives in the box and how do you set it up?
The review says the printer arrives assembled. Its listed accessories are a metal scraper, Allen keys, manual, power cord and plastic scraper. A USB drive contains Photon Workshop, test files and a digital manual. You still need a suitable work surface, resin, cleaning solvent, protective equipment and a plan for curing prints.

- Choose the location. Use a level, load-bearing surface with enough clearance to open the cover and reach the rear vent. Leave room for bottles, tools and a washing container. The review notes that a rear vent opening is present, but no hose is included.
- Inspect the machine. Check the vat, screen, build plate, locking mechanism and cables for shipping damage before adding resin.
- Install the vat and build plate. The review describes a slide-in vat and a flip-up/flip-down build-plate lock. Follow the supplied manual for the exact lock position and fastener sequence.
- Run the leveling procedure. Use the current on-screen flow and confirm the plate is secure. Tom’s Hardware reported an early firmware issue in the review unit’s leveling process, so check for a newer firmware release before diagnosing hardware.
- Connect the printer. Transfer a test file by USB or Wi-Fi. Keep the first job small enough to observe the exposure and release behavior.
- Load resin carefully. Wear gloves and safety glasses, avoid splashes and do not exceed the vat’s practical fill level. Mix resin according to its label rather than assuming all formulations behave alike.
Do not discard the shipping materials until you have completed a successful test. Large resin printers are heavy, and the original packaging is useful if the machine must be moved or returned.
What is the complete P1 MAX printing workflow?
The printer is only one part of the process. The review’s workflow runs from model preparation through slicing, supports, printing, washing, drying and UV curing.
1. Prepare and orient the model
Open the model in Photon Workshop, Chitubox or Lychee. Orient broad surfaces to reduce suction and put detail where the printer can resolve it. Large hollow parts need properly placed drain holes; otherwise uncured resin can remain trapped inside.
2. Add supports and inspect the slice
Generate supports, then inspect every layer preview for islands, unsupported overhangs and collisions. The MAX’s large area encourages dense builds, but packing the plate too tightly can make support removal and washing harder. Export the printer-compatible file to USB or send it over Wi-Fi.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

3. Print and monitor the first layers
Confirm the plate locks firmly, the vat contains enough resin and the cover is closed. Watch the initial layers for adhesion and listen for unusual release sounds. A failed large print wastes far more resin than a failed small test, so validate exposure and support settings with a modest object first.
4. Wash the parts
Remove the print with the supplied scraper and place it in an appropriate wash container or a separate wash station. The review says Anycubic’s Wash and Cure station is sold separately. Keep contaminated isopropyl alcohol out of household drains; collect and dispose of it according to local hazardous-waste rules.

5. Dry before curing
Rinse residue from recesses, then dry the parts thoroughly. The review specifically recommends drying before UV curing. Remaining solvent or water can cloud surfaces or interfere with a consistent cure.
6. UV-cure and finish
Cure according to the resin manufacturer’s guidance, rotating the part so all surfaces receive adequate light. Remove supports, sand contact marks and perform any painting or assembly only after the part is fully cleaned and cured.
How large are the reviewer’s sample prints?
Tom’s Hardware reports three individual examples made with Anycubic Standard Resin at a 0.050 mm layer height. They illustrate the scale and resource requirements of particular jobs, not guaranteed times or costs for every model.
| Example | Reported time | Reported resin use | What it shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Figure | 7 hours 24 minutes | 254 ml | A medium job can consume a substantial fraction of a litre. |
| Second figure | 14 hours 15 minutes | 1,106 ml | A large model can use more than a litre and run overnight. |
| Two-part mask | 6 hours 5 minutes | 519 ml | The build area accommodates mask-sized parts in multiple pieces. |
Actual duration depends on layer count, lift settings, support density, model orientation and resin profile. Resin consumption also includes supports and rafts, so a model’s apparent volume is not its whole material cost.
Does the firmware and leveling experience matter?
Yes. The review reports an early firmware issue in the tested unit’s leveling flow and says the AI features could be touchy. Those observations apply to that unit and firmware at the time of the September 7, 2026 review, not necessarily to a current machine.
Before using the printer for a critical job, check the manufacturer’s current firmware notes, update procedure and release date. If leveling fails, work through this order:

- Test with a small file after an update.
- Contact support if the same error persists, recording firmware version and the exact screen message.
Treat AI-assisted settings as optional. Compare any automatically generated supports or exposure suggestions with the layer preview before committing a large vat of resin.
What safety and ventilation do you need?
Uncured resin and cleaning solvents require deliberate handling. Tom’s Hardware recommends gloves, safety glasses and a well-ventilated room. The rear vent opening does not include a hose, so a vent connection or other exhaust arrangement must be sourced separately if your installation requires one.
- Keep resin and solvent away from food, children and pets.
- Wear disposable chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection when pouring, scraping or washing.
- Protect the work surface from spills and keep absorbent material nearby.
- Never pour resin-contaminated isopropyl alcohol down a household drain.
- Keep the printer’s cover closed during operation and ventilate the room after handling chemicals.
- Follow the safety data sheet for each resin and solvent, including disposal instructions.
Ventilation is not solved merely by placing the printer near an open window. Plan where fumes, wash containers and waste will go before installing the machine.
How much does a P1 MAX setup cost?
Prices in the review are dated to September 7, 2026 and are not current-price claims. Tom’s Hardware reported a $1,103 presale price, a planned $1,149 standard price and an Amazon offer of $899 after a $230 coupon. Coupons, stock and regional taxes can change; check the live listing before ordering.

| Item | Evidence available | Budget implication |
|---|---|---|
| Photon P1 MAX printer | $1,103 presale and $1,149 planned standard price reported September 7, 2026; $899 after a reported $230 Amazon coupon on that date | Use only as a dated reference, not a current quote. |
| Resin | The review used Anycubic Standard Resin; no universal current price is established | Budget by bottle volume and include supports and failed prints. |
| Wash-and-cure station | Review reports a separate Anycubic station priced at $249 at publication | Optional hardware, but washing and curing still require a safe process. |
| PPE | Gloves and safety glasses recommended by the review | Recurring consumable and replacement cost. |
| Ventilation | Rear vent opening present; no hose included | Potential additional ducting, fan or enclosure cost depending on your room. |
The real ownership cost is therefore the printer plus resin, failed-test material, cleaning solvent, gloves, eye protection, curing equipment and ventilation. A large vat can reduce refilling, but it does not reduce the post-processing work per print.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does the P1 MAX compare with the Photon P1?
The practical distinction is size. The review identifies the Photon P1 as an option for buyers who do not need the MAX’s larger build area, but it does not publish a systematic side-by-side test or complete P1 specifications.

Is the Anycubic Photon P1 MAX worth it?
The P1 MAX is worth considering when its large build volume directly removes a limitation in your projects. The heated vat, Wave Release system, substantial vat capacity and locking hardware give it a feature set aimed at demanding large-format resin work. The trade-off is not just the purchase price: you must also provide space, ventilation, PPE, washing, drying, curing and responsible solvent disposal.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can the Photon P1 MAX print a full helmet in one piece?
Its listed 285.5 × 214 × 300 mm build volume is large enough for many helmet-scale designs, but the model’s orientation, wall thickness, supports and drain-hole layout determine whether a specific helmet fits. Measure the sliced bounding box rather than relying on the label “full size.”
Does the Photon P1 MAX include a wash-and-cure machine?
No. Tom’s Hardware describes the wash-and-cure station as a separate purchase and reports a $249 price at publication. You can use another compatible washing and UV-curing setup, but you still need a controlled cleaning and curing process.
What resin can be used in the Photon P1 MAX?
The review demonstrates the printer with Anycubic Standard Resin, but it does not establish that every resin profile is interchangeable. Select a profile supplied by the resin maker or printer software, then validate exposure and supports with a small test before a large build.
How should failed resin prints be disposed of?
Keep liquid resin and resin-contaminated solvent out of drains. Follow the resin and solvent safety data sheets and your local hazardous-waste rules; allow only materials that those instructions explicitly permit to be cured before disposal.
