I moved my Android podcast subscriptions from YouTube Music to AntennaPod because I wanted a podcast app rather than a video service with a podcast tab. AntennaPod is an open-source, ad-free RSS player with import and export tools, so subscriptions, queues and episode progress are easier to keep under my control. YouTube Music is still the better choice if you routinely watch video podcasts, depend on YouTube recommendations or switch between TVs, cars and other YouTube clients. The recommendation is therefore specific: for Android listeners who mainly consume audio and value portability, AntennaPod is the more dependable fit; it is not a universal replacement for YouTube Music or a promise that every listener has the same problems.
Why did I leave YouTube Music for a dedicated podcast app?
The change started with ordinary friction: navigation that felt built for music and video, difficulty getting a queue into the order I wanted, and no obvious way to treat an episode as finished in the same deliberate way I could in a podcast manager. Other listeners have described “YouTube Music navigation is bad,” trouble marking podcasts complete and subscription imports that return the wrong shows. Those are community reports, not measured defect rates, so they should be read as experiences rather than proof that every account is affected.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →My underlying problem was control. A podcast workflow needs a clear subscription list, a predictable “next episode” queue, episode-state management and a way to move data elsewhere. YouTube Music can play podcasts, but those controls live inside a much larger service whose primary strengths are video discovery and continuity across YouTube devices. AntennaPod starts with the RSS feed and makes the podcast library the center of the product.
What changed when Google Podcasts shut down?
Google announced on 7 December 2023 that Google Podcasts would be discontinued in the United States as early as April 2024. Listening in the US continued through March 2024, while the migration and export window ran through July 2024. The announced path was either to move subscriptions into YouTube Music or export them as an OPML file for another app.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
That distinction matters if you are still trying to recreate an old Google Podcasts library. An OPML file contains the feeds you followed; it is not a recording archive and it cannot repair a feed that has disappeared from the publisher. A podcast app that accepts OPML can rebuild the subscription list, while an individual RSS URL is the fallback when a directory search cannot find a show.
What does YouTube Music do well for podcasts?
YouTube Music remains a sensible podcast home for people who want podcasts to behave like another part of YouTube. In release notes dated 24 April 2024, YouTube listed support for third-party RSS podcasts, background play, downloads, switching between audio and video, Android Auto improvements and customizable playlist sorting.

YouTube Music combines podcast listening with YouTube’s enormous video catalog and recommendation system. YouTube cited a 2024 Cumulus survey in which 84% of surveyed Gen Z monthly podcast listeners in the United States said they had discovered a podcast on YouTube. That is a survey figure quoted by YouTube, not an independent reliability test, but it explains why discovery can feel much better there than in a feed-only app.
Continuity across screens
If you watch a studio version on a television, listen in a browser and continue in a car, keeping that activity in the YouTube ecosystem is convenient. Background play and downloads also cover the basic needs of commuters. For a listener whose shows are mostly video-first or found through recommendations, moving away can remove more value than it adds.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Why is AntennaPod a better fit for an RSS-first workflow?
AntennaPod describes itself as “The easy-to-use, flexible and open-source podcast manager for Android.” Its project also calls it “a podcast player, completely free and respectful of your privacy.” The app lets you subscribe to any RSS feed and supports synchronising, importing and exporting data, so the feed—not a single platform directory—is the durable reference for your subscriptions.
Portability is built into the model
RSS subscriptions can be exported and imported instead of being trapped in one service’s account system. If a show is absent from a directory, pasting its RSS feed gives you a direct route to the publisher. That is especially useful for independent programs, private feeds and shows that change directory listings.

AntennaPod is open source, available through the F-Droid app store and free of ads, according to its About page. The project reports more than 180,000 active devices installed through Google Play in 2026; its first code was published in 2011. Those figures describe project history and adoption, not a guarantee of support response or playback reliability on every phone.
How do YouTube Music and AntennaPod compare?
The practical choice comes down to whether you want a general YouTube client or a dedicated Android podcast manager.

| Decision area | YouTube Music | AntennaPod |
|---|---|---|
| Podcast source | Third-party RSS podcasts plus YouTube’s video catalog | Any podcast RSS feed; directory listings are optional |
| Queue and episode control | Podcast controls share space with music and video playlists; some listeners report confusing queue and completion workflows | Podcast-centered library and episode-state workflow, with import/export support |
| Downloads and playback | Downloads, background play and audio/video switching documented in YouTube’s 24 April 2024 release notes | Dedicated podcast playback; exact automation options depend on the Android version you install |
| Data portability | Google’s migration route offered an OPML export during the 2024 transition window | Project documentation explicitly supports synchronising, importing and exporting data |
| Privacy and advertising | Part of a large, account-based video and music service | Project describes it as free, privacy-respecting and ad-free; open source |
| Car and device integration | Android Auto improvements and continuity with YouTube devices | Android-focused podcast app; no equivalent cross-platform YouTube continuity is established |
| Discovery | Strong recommendations and YouTube’s video audience | RSS-first discovery; you generally find shows through feeds or directories |
| Platform scope | YouTube Music runs wherever supported by YouTube | Documented as an Android app; a current iPhone release is not established here |
This is a feature-and-workflow comparison, not a laboratory head-to-head reliability score. The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: YouTube Music is stronger for video, recommendations and cross-screen continuity, while AntennaPod gives Android listeners a more inspectable RSS workflow and clearer data portability.
How do I move Google Podcasts subscriptions into AntennaPod?
If you still have the OPML export from Google’s shutdown process, the migration is straightforward. The labels can vary by app version, but the sequence is the same: obtain the file, import it, check the results and repair exceptions with RSS URLs.
- Find your OPML file. Use the export you created during Google’s migration period. If you did not save one, check whether another podcast app or backup still has your subscription list.
- Open AntennaPod’s import function. In the app, choose the subscription or podcast-management menu and select the option to import an OPML file. Grant Android file access when prompted, then select the saved file.
- Review the imported shows. Compare the resulting list with your old subscriptions. An OPML file records feed subscriptions, so it will not restore proprietary recommendations, YouTube-only videos or deleted episodes.
- Repair missing entries with RSS. Visit the publisher’s official site and copy its podcast RSS feed when a search result is missing or points to the wrong show. In AntennaPod, use the add-podcast option and paste the feed URL.
- Set your listening routine. Rebuild the queue in the order you actually listen, then decide which episodes should be downloaded or removed. Keep the OPML file as a backup before making major changes.
Google’s announced export was intended for uploading to another podcast app that supports OPML. AntennaPod’s documented import and export support makes it a compatible destination, but no importer can guarantee a perfect match when publishers have changed feeds or names.
How should I handle queues, completion and downloads after switching?
Start with a small, deliberate setup instead of importing every possible show and letting an enormous backlog dictate your day.

Build a queue you can explain
Add only the next few episodes you genuinely plan to hear. A podcast-specific queue is easier to audit than a mixed music-and-video playlist: if an episode is there, you know why it is next. When a show is finished, update its episode state in the podcast app rather than relying on a general media-history signal.
Choose a download policy
Use downloads for commutes or unreliable coverage, and remove played files so storage does not silently fill. YouTube Music documents downloads and background play; AntennaPod’s exact automatic-download and deletion controls can vary by release, so inspect the settings on your phone and test with one short episode before applying a broad rule.

Keep video expectations separate
AntennaPod is a podcast player, not a general YouTube video downloader. The project has stated that generic YouTube entries fall outside its podcast scope. Subscribe to the publisher’s audio RSS feed when you want an audio workflow; keep YouTube Music for programs where watching the video is the point.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What problems can appear during migration, and how do I fix them?
- The wrong show appears: Remove the mistaken subscription and paste the publisher’s RSS URL instead of trusting a similarly named directory result.
- A show is missing: Look for an RSS link on the publisher’s site. A directory omission does not necessarily mean the feed is gone.
- Old episodes are not restored: OPML carries subscriptions, not a downloaded-episode cache or every historical listening state. Re-download only what you need.
- Video episodes do not behave like audio: Use YouTube Music or the publisher’s video channel for visual content; an RSS podcast app may receive only the audio feed.
- You expected iPhone support: AntennaPod is documented as an Android app. Do not assume an iOS edition or identical feature set without checking current project information.
- Playback or automation differs on your phone: Android battery restrictions, storage permissions and app-version differences can interrupt downloads. Allow the app to run as needed, confirm free storage and test one feed before migrating everything.
Should I keep YouTube Music installed?
For many Android listeners, keeping both apps is the least frustrating arrangement. Use AntennaPod for audio-first RSS subscriptions, queue discipline and a portable library; open YouTube Music when a show’s video, recommendation trail or TV-and-car continuity matters. The apps serve different jobs, so “switching” does not have to mean deleting one.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can AntennaPod import my YouTube Music podcast subscriptions directly?
The documented migration path from Google was an OPML export, not a universal one-click YouTube Music extraction. Export the subscription file when available, then import it into AntennaPod; for anything absent, add the publisher’s RSS feed manually.
Will AntennaPod sync my listening position between Android phones?
AntennaPod’s project documentation says the app supports synchronising, but the exact service and setup depend on the version and sync provider you choose. Check the app’s current synchronisation settings before assuming that progress will follow you automatically.
Can I listen to a podcast’s video version in AntennaPod?
Only when the publisher supplies a compatible podcast feed, and that feed may contain audio rather than video. AntennaPod is not intended to download arbitrary YouTube videos, so use YouTube Music for a video-first program.
Is AntennaPod available for iPhone?
The project documentation cited here describes AntennaPod as an Android app and does not establish a current iOS release. iPhone users should choose an app with documented iOS support rather than assuming feature parity.
Does moving to AntennaPod remove YouTube recommendations?
Yes, the RSS-first workflow is intentionally separate from YouTube’s recommendation graph. You gain a cleaner subscription system, but you will need to discover new shows through publishers, directories or links instead of relying on YouTube’s personalized feed.
