Android Auto does not have one permanently “default” music catalog. It is a car-friendly app platform and control surface. To replace the player you normally install a compatible music app, sign in, open it from Android Auto’s app launcher, and then arrange the launcher so it is easy to reach. The app that is currently playing becomes the active media session, while the recent-app area offers a shortcut back to it.
If queue, shuffle, repeat, lyrics, browse categories, or other buttons disappear after you switch apps, that is usually an integration difference rather than a fault in your car. Android Auto displays the playback actions that the active app declares through its media session, subject to the car interface and safety-oriented limits.

What does “default music app” mean in Android Auto?
In practical use, the “default” is the compatible media app that you open and leave as the active playback session. Google describes Android Auto as a way to listen to music and podcasts through the car’s speakers, not as a single music service. The display’s app launcher opens media apps, and the recent-app area provides quick access to the most recently used one.
That distinction matters because changing launcher order is not the same as changing an Android-wide default handler. You are choosing which app is easiest to launch and which app currently supplies the media controls. If you start playback in a different service, Android Auto can switch its controls to that service without changing the order of every app in the launcher.

How do I switch to a third-party music app?
Use the phone for setup, then make the switch from the car display. The exact wording can vary by Android Auto release and vehicle, but the workflow is consistent.
- Install a compatible app. Download the music or podcast app from Google Play and check that it supports Android Auto. An app that works only on the phone will not appear in the car launcher.
- Sign in on the phone. Open the app before connecting to the car and complete its account setup. Google notes that some media apps require a subscription for access to their catalog or particular features.
- Connect Android Auto. Start a wired or wireless Android Auto session, then open the app launcher on the vehicle display.
- Open the new player. Select the app, choose an album, playlist, station, or other available source, and start playback. It is now the active media session.
- Reorder the launcher if needed. On the phone, open Android Auto settings and use the launcher-customization screen to drag the preferred app nearer the top. Hide unused apps if the interface offers that option.
- Test the car controls. While the app plays, switch to navigation or another Android Auto screen. Check the media widget or taskbar to see which controls remain available without reopening the full player.
Reordering saves time but does not force an app to play automatically every time the vehicle connects. Android Auto generally returns to the most recently used media app or session, so start playback in the service you actually want before driving.
Why do two music apps show different buttons?
Android Auto reads the active app’s media-session state. Google’s developer documentation identifies required standard actions such as play, pause, stop, play-from-media-ID, and play-from-search. Apps can additionally expose previous, next, queue, seeking, or custom actions. If an app does not declare an action, Android Auto has no reliable command to display for it.
Car makers and Google provide a basic playback set, including Play/Pause, Next, Previous, and an overflow menu. Additional controls depend on the app’s implementation and on how the car interface chooses to present them. Consequently, one service can show queue navigation and repeat while another presents only play, pause, and skip.

A missing control therefore does not prove that the app lacks the feature on the phone. The phone app may support lyrics or a sophisticated queue while its Android Auto session exposes only the commands needed for in-car playback.

How many controls can I use while navigation is full-screen?
The media widget can show up to three controls selected by the active app while another app, such as Maps, occupies the main screen. Those three controls are not a universal Android Auto menu; they are the subset the active app offers and the interface chooses to surface.
For example, an app might use the available slots for previous, play/pause, and next. Another could replace one of those with a queue or custom action. To reach anything else, open the full media screen and check the overflow menu, if the app supplies one.
How do Android Auto music apps provide their car interface?
Google documents two broad approaches for Android media experiences. A simpler integration uses MediaBrowserService for browsing and playback. A more customized experience can use Car App Library templates.
MediaBrowserService
This service lets Android Auto discover an app’s media tree and playback session. The app can expose categories such as playlists, albums, stations, or search results, along with the media-session actions it supports. The resulting interface is comparatively standardized, which can make behavior predictable but limits how much the developer can customize.
Car App Library templates
Car App Library includes templates for sectioned items, media playback, sign-in, and tabbed navigation. These templates let an app decide how much of its catalog is visible in the car and how users move between sections. A developer may therefore provide deep playlist browsing, a small set of curated stations, or a sign-in screen followed by a restricted catalog.

Both approaches are constrained by the vehicle interface and Android Auto’s driving-focused design. A large phone screen does not translate directly into an equally detailed car screen.
How should I compare replacement music apps?
Do not compare phone screenshots alone. Compare the car experience across six practical dimensions.

Test the app with the types of listening you actually do. A service that is ideal for albums may be awkward for live stations, and a service with a strong queue may expose only basic controls for certain streams.

Work through compatibility, account, and launcher checks before assuming the car is defective.

- Confirm the app is installed on the connected phone. Android Auto lists compatible phone apps, not every audio app installed on another device.
- Open the app and sign in on the phone. Some apps do not expose their car entry point until initial setup is complete.
- Check launcher customization. An app can be hidden or placed far down the list. Restore it or move it higher in Android Auto’s launcher settings.
- Reconnect the session. Stop and restart Android Auto after installing the app or changing its account state so the launcher can refresh.
- Check regional or plan limits. Google notes that some media apps require subscriptions, and a service may restrict catalog access until the account is eligible.
- Verify that the app actually supports Android Auto. Phone-only players will not gain a car interface merely because they can play audio through Bluetooth.
Why are queue, shuffle, repeat, or lyrics missing after switching?
First determine whether the control is absent everywhere or only for a particular item. An app may expose queue actions for playlists but not for a live station, or it may expose a custom action only on its full media screen rather than in the compact widget.

Next, check the app’s own Android Auto screen and overflow menu. If the action is missing there as well, the app is probably not publishing it through its media session or car template. There is no Android Auto setting that can manufacture an undeclared action.
If the control appears inconsistently, stop playback, start a different item, and reconnect the session. This distinguishes an item-specific limitation from a session that has not refreshed. Updates can also change the set of actions an app publishes, so compare behavior after the app and Android Auto components are current.

If the widget suddenly shows another catalog, return to the preferred app and resume playback rather than changing launcher order again. Launcher order controls discoverability; the active playback session controls what the widget represents.
Does a phone app’s feature list guarantee the same car feature?
No. Android Auto receives a deliberately limited description of the app’s media session and car browsing templates. A phone feature may be unavailable in the car because the developer did not publish a corresponding action, because the vehicle interface does not expose it, or because the current content type does not support it.

That separation is intentional: the car interface favors a small, predictable set of commands over every control found on a touch-oriented phone screen. Choose an app based on the actions and browsing levels it actually exposes during an Android Auto session.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I change the Android Auto music app without changing my phone’s default app?
Yes. Android Auto’s launcher order and active media session are separate from the phone’s general default-app settings. You can leave the phone’s default unchanged and simply launch a different compatible player in the car.

The phone interface can use controls that the app never publishes to its Android Auto media session. Queue support must be exposed as car-compatible media data and actions before Android Auto can display it.
Will hiding unused apps delete them from my phone?
No. Launcher customization changes which compatible apps are shown or how they are ordered inside Android Auto; it does not uninstall the apps or remove their phone permissions.
Why does the compact media widget change when I start a different stream?
The widget follows the currently active media session. Starting playback in another compatible app gives Android Auto a new set of declared actions, so the compact controls can change immediately.
