Android Auto loses TomTom Go navigation app to issues

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Android Auto can “lose” the TomTom Go navigation app in a few different ways: the app icon disappears from the Android Auto home screen, the phone connects but TomTom won’t launch, or navigation starts but audio routing fails. In most cases, the break isn’t random—it’s a permissions change, a battery restriction, a corrupted Android Auto session, or a version mismatch after an update.

This guide is built to be systematic. Follow the steps in order, because the fixes that require cache resets or reinstallation tend to be the most effective, and doing them too early can make it harder to tell what caused the original failure.

Quick constraint: TomTom Go support depends on your Android version, phone model, and the Android Auto version installed. The troubleshooting steps below cover both wired and wireless setups.

  • TomTom Go doesn’t appear in Android Auto at all: the app isn’t being granted required permissions, Android Auto isn’t binding to the app, or the Android Auto profile/session is broken.
  • TomTom Go appears, but tapping it does nothing: background restrictions, a stuck TomTom Go process, or an audio/navigation routing failure.
  • Navigation starts but no voice guidance: media volume, voice routing, notification access, or the phone’s sound output mode.
  • Works one day, breaks after an update: Android Auto updates, TomTom Go updates, or Android system updates changed how permissions or background activity are handled.
  • Only fails on wireless (or only on wired): USB cable/port issues, incorrect USB mode, or a wireless pairing state problem.

What to check first: versions, compatibility, and connection type

Before changing settings, confirm you’re not chasing a compatibility or version issue.

Confirm Android Auto and TomTom Go versions

On your Android phone, open the Play Store and check for updates to Android Auto and TomTom Go. After updating, reboot the phone once to clear any old service sessions.

  • Android Auto (phone app): typically installed via Google Play.
  • TomTom Go: the navigation app you use for turn-by-turn guidance.

If you recently updated either app and TomTom disappeared afterward, focus on permissions and battery restrictions first, then do a cache reset.

Verify Android Auto compatibility on your phone

Android Auto availability depends on your device and Android version. If you’re on a heavily customized ROM or an Android fork with restricted background services, Android Auto integration can be less reliable.

Check that Android Auto is actually running: connect the phone, confirm the Android Auto interface loads on the car display, and make sure you don’t see warnings about permissions or setup steps.

Use the same connection mode (wired vs wireless) consistently

Switching between wired and wireless rapidly can leave stale pairing state behind. Pick one method for troubleshooting. If you’re currently using wireless, run the fixes using wireless only; if wired, use a stable wired connection for the entire troubleshooting run.

Step-by-step fixes (run in this order)

These steps are designed to progressively remove variables. If you fix the issue early, stop when TomTom Go reappears and navigation works.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1) Restart everything in the right order

Do this sequence because Android Auto services and the car head unit can keep a stale connection alive.

  1. On the phone: fully restart the device (not just close apps).
  2. On the car: turn the ignition off for 30 seconds.
  3. Turn ignition back on and reconnect the phone to Android Auto.
  4. Only after Android Auto fully loads on the car screen, open TomTom Go from inside Android Auto.

2) Update both apps and remove stale Auto connections

Updates fix known integration bugs. Stale connection state can cause Android Auto to “hide” certain apps.

  1. Update Android Auto and TomTom Go in Google Play.
  2. Open Settings → Connected devices (or Bluetooth) and remove the car device if it’s paired for wireless.
  3. Open Android Auto again by re-pairing (wireless) or re-plugging (wired).

If you’re using wireless, also “forget” the car from Bluetooth on the phone, then pair again from scratch.

3) Re-enable permissions Android Auto needs

TomTom Go depends on location, audio, and sometimes other controls (depending on your phone and Android version). Android Auto also needs permission to access the right media and app routing behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Go to Settings → Apps → TomTom Go.
  2. Open Permissions.
  3. Ensure Location is set to Allow (for best results choose “Allow all the time” if you see that option).
  4. Ensure notification/audio-related permissions are not blocked when prompted.
  5. Back to Apps → Android Auto → Permissions.
  6. Confirm Location and any prompt-related permissions Android Auto requests are enabled.

If you have multiple permission prompts (Android versions differ), accept them all. Denying one can cause TomTom to be filtered out of Android Auto’s app list.

4) Fix battery optimization and background restrictions

Battery savers frequently break navigation integration by stopping background activity. This is one of the most common reasons Android Auto “loses” navigation apps.

AAWireless Two – Wireless Android Auto Adapter – Convert Factory Wired Android Auto to Wireless – Bluetooth & Wi-Fi Auto Connect – Easy Plug & Play – Multifunction Button – Made in Europe
  • Compatible with wired-only Android Auto systems
  • Requires Android 11+
  • Multifunctional button for easy phone pairing and switching
  • Connects unlimited phones, perfect for road trips
  • Plug & play setup, no tech skills needed
  1. Go to Settings → Battery (or Battery & device care on Samsung).
  2. Open Battery optimization / App battery.
  3. Find TomTom Go and set it to Unrestricted (or Don’t optimize).
  4. Find Android Auto and set it to Unrestricted as well.
  5. Disable any “auto-start blocked” or “restricted” states if your phone has that toggle.

Also check Device care / App power management variants. If your phone supports it, allow both apps to run in the background while Android Auto is connected.

5) Clear cache/data for Android Auto and TomTom Go (with cautions)

Clearing cache fixes corrupted integration state without fully removing app data. Clearing data resets the app’s local state and may require you to sign in again or reconfigure settings in TomTom Go.

  1. Go to Settings → Apps → Android Auto.
  2. Tap Storage.
  3. Tap Clear cache.
  4. If it still fails, tap Clear storage (data). Reopen Android Auto after that.
  5. Now go to Settings → Apps → TomTom Go.
  6. Tap Storage → Clear cache.
  7. If needed, then clear storage for TomTom Go.

After a cache/data reset, reconnect to Android Auto and check whether TomTom Go appears in the Android Auto app list.

6) Check TomTom Go audio/navigation settings for driving mode

Sometimes TomTom Go launches but navigation voice guidance fails, which makes it feel like the app is “lost.” Confirm voice settings inside TomTom Go.

  1. Open TomTom Go from the phone (not only from Android Auto).
  2. Go to the app’s Settings (wording varies by version).
  3. Confirm Voice guidance is enabled.
  4. Ensure driving alerts/route guidance are turned on.
  5. Set a safe default for language and voice, then restart the phone and test again with Android Auto.

7) Verify notification access and media/navigation routing

Android Auto relies on the phone to route media and notifications to the car. If notification access is blocked for either app, the Android Auto experience can degrade.

  1. Open Settings → Apps → TomTom Go → Notifications.
  2. Make sure notifications are Allowed.
  3. Open Settings → Apps → Android Auto → Notifications.
  4. Make sure notifications are Allowed (or not blocked).
  5. If your phone has a “silent” mode for apps, turn it off for both apps.

Then, in the car, confirm that media volume isn’t turned down to zero and that the output is set to the car speakers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8) Test with a different cable, USB port, or wireless pairing

Bad hardware is a silent cause. A cable that charges but doesn’t reliably transfer data can cause Android Auto to partially initialize—leading to missing apps.

  1. Try a different USB cable (prefer a USB-C to USB-A data cable).
  2. Try a different USB port in the car (some are “charging only”).
  3. If wireless: remove the pairing and re-pair, then test TomTom Go again.

If the problem only happens on one port or one cable, hardware is your primary suspect.

If Android Auto shows TomTom Go but navigation won’t start

When TomTom Go appears in Android Auto but tapping it fails, you’re usually dealing with background restrictions, a stuck process, or audio routing problems.

  • Force-stop and retry: On the phone, go to Settings → Apps → TomTom Go → Force stop. Reconnect to Android Auto and try again.
  • Reboot the car head unit (if your vehicle allows it): turning the ignition off for 30–60 seconds is often enough.
  • Check sound routing: ensure the car is receiving media audio. Try a YouTube playback inside Android Auto to confirm audio routing works; if audio is broken, TomTom will also struggle.
  • Remove VPN profiles: if your phone uses a VPN or a “private DNS,” temporarily disable it and test. Some security configurations can block the app’s background services.

If TomTom Go doesn’t appear in Android Auto at all

This is the most frustrating version of the issue, and it usually comes down to filtering (permissions/battery), a broken Android Auto session, or an outdated integration package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Re-check Location permission for TomTom Go and Android Auto. Android versions will sometimes show a permission as “allowed” but the app still lacks the specific permission category needed for driving navigation.
  • Clear Android Auto cache first. If you clear TomTom Go storage first, you may spend time reconfiguring TomTom when Android Auto is the actual failure point.
  • Disable battery optimization for both apps. If Android Auto can’t keep TomTom running long enough to bind, it won’t show reliably.
  • Update both apps again after clearing cache. Sometimes updates install cleanly but services need a fresh start.

Advanced recovery when the app won’t reappear

If the basic flow doesn’t restore TomTom Go, you can try deeper resets that don’t require a full phone wipe.

Uninstall and reinstall TomTom Go (and Android Auto updates carefully)

Uninstalling TomTom Go forces a clean integration state. Avoid uninstalling Android Auto unless you’re comfortable reinstalling it and repeating any setup prompts.

  1. Uninstall TomTom Go.
  2. Reboot the phone.
  3. Install TomTom Go again from Google Play.
  4. Reconnect to Android Auto and check whether TomTom Go appears.

If you recently updated Android Auto and it regressed, consider uninstalling updates for Android Auto (wording: Uninstall updates on the Android Auto app page). Then update it again to the latest stable version.

Reset Android Auto connection settings without wiping your phone

Stale pairing settings can hide apps and break routing. Use the car/phone pairing reset approach.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Remove the car from Bluetooth (if wireless).
  2. In the Android Auto app settings, find options related to “connections,” “paired cars,” or “forget.” Remove the existing connection.
  3. Reconnect and set up Android Auto again from scratch.

Do not perform a factory reset of your phone unless you’ve tried everything else.

Inspect phone developer options, USB preferences, and “Do not disturb”

Some power-user settings interfere with Android Auto behavior.

  1. Check Developer options for USB-related toggles (if enabled). Avoid changing multiple settings at once.
  2. When connected by cable, open the USB notification prompt and confirm File transfer (MTP) mode if you see it.
  3. Check Do not disturb rules. If you have an automation that silences navigation prompts, TomTom integration can appear broken.

Alternatives if you need navigation right now

If you’re stuck mid-trip and TomTom Go keeps failing, you still have options while you troubleshoot the Android Auto integration problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use Google Maps inside Android Auto: it’s usually the quickest recovery path if Android Auto is fully working.
  • Run TomTom Go on the phone display: if Android Auto can’t launch TomTom, the app may still provide guidance on the phone screen (depending on your driving safety preferences and vehicle restrictions).
  • Check car head unit settings: some vehicles have an app-management screen for Android Auto where certain apps get disabled.

These alternatives aren’t a replacement for a permanent fix, but they keep you moving while you work through the steps above.

FAQs

Why does Android Auto stop showing TomTom Go after an update?

Android Auto and TomTom Go updates can change permission prompts and background behavior. The most common causes are battery optimization, Location permission changes, or a corrupted Android Auto cache after a failed session.

Should I clear TomTom Go data or only the cache?

Start with Clear cache. Only use Clear storage/data if cache clearing doesn’t fix it, because it resets local app state and can require additional setup.

Does a charging-only USB cable affect TomTom Go on Android Auto?

Yes. A cable that doesn’t fully support data transfer can lead to partial Android Auto initialization where certain apps don’t appear or won’t launch. Testing a different data-capable cable and USB port is often the fastest hardware fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I fix this without reinstalling Android Auto?

Most cases are resolved without reinstalling Android Auto. In practice, updating apps, disabling battery optimization, re-checking Location permission, and clearing Android Auto cache are enough for the majority of failures.

Is this issue limited to TomTom Go or other navigation apps too?

If only TomTom Go is missing, the problem is usually TomTom permissions/settings or a TomTom-specific integration state. If multiple apps disappear or won’t launch, the issue is more likely with Android Auto itself or your connection hardware.

Bottom Line

When Android Auto loses TomTom Go navigation, the fastest reliable path is to update both apps, verify Location permissions, disable battery optimization for TomTom Go and Android Auto, then clear Android Auto’s cache. From there, test with a known-good cable/port or re-pair wireless, and only then move to deeper resets like clearing TomTom storage or reinstalling.

If you tell me your phone model, Android version, whether you use wired or wireless, and what exactly you see on the car screen (TomTom missing vs present but not launching), I can narrow this to the most likely cause and the fewest steps.
