Conditional verdict: the Anbernic RG DDS is still worth considering only if your top priority is a 3DS-shaped Android clamshell with genuinely matching screen geometry, a built-in stylus and enough headroom for experimentation. It is a poor pre-order for anyone who requires guaranteed emulator-team bug fixes, independently measured performance, US-warehouse availability or a low-risk purchase. The Azahar team withdrew official support for every Anbernic device on 26 October 2026 after Anbernic promoted an unofficial fork called AzaharPlus. Official Azahar builds may continue to run, but Anbernic-specific problems will not be investigated or fixed. The first units are scheduled to ship gradually from 10 December 2026, and no independent review of retail hardware had appeared by 29 October.

What changed with Azahar support?
On 26 October 2026, Azahar’s developers ended official support for all Anbernic hardware, not just the RG DDS. Their statement says the decision followed Anbernic advertising the RG DDS with unofficial, piracy-focused forks. The project’s official site is azahar-emu.org.

Azahar Emulator team, official X, 26 October 2026: “It has come to our attention that handheld manufacturer Anbernic has been promoting their latest handheld device, the RG DDS, using unofficial piracy-focused forks of Azahar, and has been openly featuring these forks in their advertising material.”
Azahar Emulator team, official X, 26 October 2026: “After some internal discussion, we have decided that we will NOT be officially supporting this device or others from this manufacturer. Any issues or bugs related to devices from this specific manufacturer will not be investigated or resolved. If you would like to stay on a device with guaranteed official support, we recommend looking for alternatives. Thank you for your understanding.”

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This is a support-policy change, not evidence of a remote block. An official Azahar build can still launch on an RG DDS, but the team will not promise that future releases remain compatible with Anbernic firmware or investigate graphics, audio, touchscreen, controller or performance bugs unique to the device. A failure may instead be left to Android, the graphics driver, the emulator or a community workaround to resolve.
Azahar and AzaharPlus are different
Anbernic’s promotional material used a fork it calls AzaharPlus, not the official Azahar package. A preloaded fork is not an endorsement by the Azahar developers. Check the package name, developer identity and update channel before assuming an app is an official build; do not treat advertised fork features as evidence of upstream support.
Reports about AzaharPlus have highlighted claims such as broad game-file compatibility, downloading system files from official servers, built-in cheats and Amiibo generation. Those claims do not establish that official Azahar provides the same functions. For lawful play, use only 3DS titles and system data dumped from hardware you own, and obtain emulator software from its identifiable project source.
What exactly is the RG DDS?
The RG DDS (Dream Dual-Screen) is an Android 16 clamshell designed around the proportions of a New Nintendo 3DS. It is not a faster version of the existing RG DS models: those use the much weaker RK3568 and equal-sized screens aimed primarily at Nintendo DS. The DDS changes the processor, operating system, panel shapes and controls to target 3DS-era software.
| Component | RG DDS specification | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | Qualcomm Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 (SG6275P), 4nm | 1× Kryo Gold Plus at 2.8GHz, 4× Kryo Gold at 2.57GHz, 3× Kryo Silver at 1.9GHz |
| GPU | Qualcomm Adreno A22 | Anbernic lists Turnip graphics drivers |
| Operating system | Android 16 | FOTA/OTA updates listed |
| Top display | 4.7-inch IPS, 1200×720, 5:3, 300PPI, 500 nits | Independent brightness control |
| Bottom display | 4-inch IPS, 960×720, 4:3, 300PPI, 500 nits | Independent brightness control |
| Memory and storage | 8GB/128GB or 12GB/256GB | microSD/TF expansion up to 2TB |
| Battery and charging | 6,000mAh; up to 27W charging | 5V/9V charging figures |
| Connectivity | Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, USB-C video out | USB-C output listed at 1080p; 3.5mm headphone jack |
| Size and weight | 166×93×26mm; 434g | Figures from Anbernic’s listing |
Anbernic lists capacitive joysticks rather than Hall-effect sticks, a D-pad, ABXY buttons, a six-axis gyroscope, a Z-axis linear vibration motor, front stereo speakers with DSP and a retractable capacitive stylus stored in the shell. A Hall-effect lid sensor can trigger sleep. There is also a dedicated AI button for game-guide lookup, real-time translation, chat and image generation; Anbernic does not identify the underlying service.

Colour options are Glacier White, Basalt Black and Phantom Blue. The box contains the handheld, USB charging cable, stylus, two screen protectors and a manual. It contains no games and no microSD card, so budget for storage if your legally dumped library will exceed the internal capacity. Anbernic also lists a carrying bag that fits the RG DDS and RG DS Plus.
Why do the screens matter for 3DS games?
The panel dimensions are the RG DDS’s strongest technical argument. A Nintendo 3DS renders 400×240 pixels on its top screen and 320×240 on its bottom screen. Multiplying each dimension by three produces exactly 1200×720 and 960×720, the DDS resolutions.
That allows a 3DS image to be displayed at a whole-number 3× scale on both panels without stretching or black bars. The result preserves the original aspect ratios while using every pixel of each display. This is unusual among current dual-screen Android handhelds: the AYN Thor’s lower panel is narrower and taller than a 3DS bottom screen, so a 3DS image cannot fill it in the same way.
Nintendo DS software is less tidy. Its 256×192 image does not divide evenly into 720 pixels vertically (720 ÷ 192 = 3.75). You must choose fractional scaling or a 3× image surrounded by a border, so the DDS is optimized for 3DS geometry rather than being a perfect scaler for both generations.
The panels do not reproduce the original glasses-free stereoscopic 3D effect. Anbernic has shown compatibility with external AR glasses, but that is a manufacturer demonstration rather than an independent result. A used original 3DS remains the straightforward option if glasses-free 3D is essential.

How fast will 3DS, PS2 and newer systems run?
There is no reliable retail-performance answer yet. As of 29 October 2026, no independent outlet had published an RG DDS frame-rate table, compatibility percentage, battery-life test, fan-noise measurement or touch-latency measurement. Any claim that a particular 3DS library runs at a specific percentage or frame rate is therefore unverified.
Anbernic’s promotional clips showed 3DS, DS, PS2, PS3 and original Xbox software. Reported examples include Nintendogs + Cats and Pokémon Omega Ruby through AzaharPlus at 3×, Golden Sun: Dark Dawn through melonDS at 5×, and clips of Pokémon Ultra Sun, Resident Evil: Revelations, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and Kirby: Triple Deluxe at 3× or 5×. These are manufacturer-selected demonstrations, not independent tests of retail units.
A later promotional video showed Transformers: Devastation through a PS4 emulator identified as Bachata S4, with an on-screen counter between 53 and 60 frames per second. That counter is not a validated benchmark. PS3 and PS4 emulation should be treated as experimental capabilities, not the reason to place an order. The Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 suggests more headroom than the RK3568 in the older RG DS, but the actual result depends on drivers, emulator builds, thermals and each game.
How much does the RG DDS cost, and when does it ship?
Anbernic’s China-warehouse pre-order was listed with a $15 discount on each configuration. Prices below were checked in October 2026.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Configuration | Pre-order price | Regular price | Storage expansion |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8GB RAM + 128GB storage | $284.99 | $299.99 | microSD/TF up to 2TB |
| 12GB RAM + 256GB storage | $349.99 | $364.99 | microSD/TF up to 2TB |
Anbernic says units will ship gradually from 10 December 2026. Pre-sale material reported fulfilment finishing by 31 January 2027, so this is a shipping window rather than a guaranteed arrival date. A US-warehouse variant was not available in the 18 October store check, and shipping charges are extra. The lack of a card in the box is another immediate cost.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
The price is striking because Anbernic built its reputation around sub-$100 to roughly $200 handhelds. The original Nintendo 3DS launched at $249.99 in 2011, making the DDS’s $284.99 entry price higher even before shipping. The premium is buying a new dual-screen Android design, a modern Qualcomm platform and the exact 3DS panel geometry—not a proven library of emulator performance.
How does it compare with the Retroid Pocket Duo and AYN Thor?
The right alternative depends on whether screen authenticity, panel quality, chip power or support policy matters most.
| Device | Screen approach | Chip | Price checked Oct 2026 | Trade-off against RG DDS |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RG DDS | 4.7-inch 1200×720 plus 4-inch 960×720 IPS; exact 3× 3DS geometry | Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 | $284.99/$349.99 pre-order | Best geometric match; IPS refresh rate unpublished by Anbernic; official Azahar support withdrawn |
| Retroid Pocket Duo | 5.5-inch plus 4.5-inch 120Hz AMOLED | Dragonwing Q-7790 | $269.00 street | Cheaper and higher-refresh OLED panels, but not 3DS-native dimensions |
| AYN Thor | 6-inch plus 3.92-inch AMOLED | Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 | $469.99 base | More chip headroom; lower panel shape does not match a 3DS bottom screen |
The Azahar statement did not name either competing model and did not endorse a replacement. It only advised buyers who require guaranteed official support to look elsewhere. Do not interpret that general advice as a compatibility guarantee for a particular competitor.

Should you pre-order, wait, or skip the RG DDS?
Pre-order only when these conditions fit
- Your primary goal is a 3DS-accurate two-screen layout in a clamshell Android handheld.
- A built-in retractable stylus matters for touch-heavy games.
- You are comfortable selecting, updating and troubleshooting emulator software yourself.
- You accept that official Azahar will not investigate Anbernic-specific bugs.
- You can wait for China-warehouse fulfilment from December 2026 into January 2027.
- You are buying for the form factor, not for the PS3 or PS4 clips.
Wait for retail evidence when you need certainty
- You want independent 3DS, PS2 or GameCube frame-rate results.
- You need measured battery life, thermals, fan noise, stick quality or touch latency.
- You require official Azahar maintenance or a US-warehouse shipping option.
- $285 to $350 feels too high for hardware with no retail review.
Choose another device when the priority is specific
- For guaranteed emulator-team support, choose a maker not covered by Azahar’s withdrawal.
- For Nintendo DS alone, the RG DS Plus is the cheaper DS-oriented device at $94.99.
- For OLED panels and 120Hz refresh, the $269 Retroid Pocket Duo is the more direct fit.
- For maximum dual-screen chip power, the AYN Thor starts at $469.99, accepting its poorer 3DS screen match.
- For original glasses-free 3D, consider a used Nintendo 3DS and inspect it for screen yellowing, scratches and battery condition.
What legal and policy risks should buyers understand?
Azahar grew out of Citra after Nintendo’s 2024 legal action against Citra and related projects. Reports have cited a $2.4 million Yuzu settlement during that period. The developers’ distancing from AzaharPlus is partly a way to avoid appearing to sanction piracy-oriented advertising.
Separately, the Entertainment Software Association asked the US Trade Representative to scrutinize commercial emulation handhelds and named Anbernic in arguments about “Superfake” or counterfeit-style piracy. That was a trade-association recommendation, not a US ban or announced measure against the RG DDS. Reports also described a past seizure of 12,000 Anbernic products in Italy, without a date for that seizure in the cited account. Buyers should distinguish policy pressure from an actual prohibition in their country.

What should you check before installing an emulator?
- Identify the build: open Android’s app information and record the package name, developer and update channel. Do not assume an app labeled AzaharPlus is maintained by the official Azahar project.
- Use lawful material: limit play to game images and system data dumped from hardware you own. The RG DDS does not include games.
- Leave room for troubleshooting: keep the original emulator build and configuration available before changing drivers or settings, so you can identify whether a problem is caused by the app, Android or the graphics stack.
- Expect community support: an Anbernic-specific bug may require a user workaround or a fork, with no promise that an official Azahar release will address it.
The latest stable Azahar release cited in October 2026 coverage was Azahar 2126.2, released 8 October 2026. That version number does not guarantee compatibility with the RG DDS, and future support policy remains the decisive limitation.
How we picked the alternatives
The comparison prioritizes five practical differences: exact 3DS screen scaling, panel technology and refresh, processor headroom beyond 3DS, official-emulator support policy, and price or shipping status in October 2026. It also separates a true 3DS machine from lower-cost DS hardware and from devices whose screen proportions or software support solve a different problem.

Can official Azahar still be installed on the RG DDS?
The support withdrawal does not describe a remote block, so an official build may install and run. The important limitation is that the Azahar team will not investigate or fix bugs specific to Anbernic hardware, and future compatibility is not guaranteed.
Does the RG DDS have a 120Hz display?
Anbernic’s own listing does not publish a refresh rate. Some secondary reports describe both IPS panels as 60Hz, but that should be treated as reported information rather than an Anbernic-confirmed specification.
Is the RG DDS good for Nintendo DS games?
It can display DS software, but the 256×192 image does not scale to the DDS’s 720-pixel height by an integer factor. You will need fractional scaling or a bordered 3× image, so the hardware’s strongest advantage is 3DS rather than DS.
What do I need to buy with the RG DDS?
At minimum, plan for a microSD card because none is included, even though the slot is listed for capacities up to 2TB. A carrying bag is optional; the stylus and two screen protectors are already in the box.
