American Express plans to eliminate about 5% of its worldwide workforce—approximately 3,500 jobs—under a restructuring announced on October 23, 2026, alongside its third-quarter results. Chief executive Stephen Squeri said the move is intended to streamline operations, remove management layers and speed decision-making, not respond to a business downturn. Travel Weekly reported a $336 million restructuring charge associated with the plan. AP also reported adjusted quarterly earnings of $4.68 per share, excluding a one-time gain from the sale of American Express’s stake in Global Business Travel Group.
Squeri said the company has “good momentum,” but needs to become “a more agile and efficient organization” to accelerate innovation and compete over the next several years. In a separate statement reported by Travel Weekly, he said he had asked senior leaders to streamline their organizations, align teams around critical deliverables and reduce layers to speed decisions.
