You can let people ask business questions in natural language without giving an AI unrestricted access to a database. The strongest alternatives to free-form text-to-SQL are semantic layers, governed data agents, reviewed query aliases or blueprints, and conversational analytics built into BI or lakehouse platforms. These approaches ground questions in approved definitions, constrain or validate queries, resolve ambiguity, and enforce permissions when data is accessed. They do not necessarily eliminate SQL: many still generate SQL behind the scenes. The important difference is that business meaning, allowed sources, and execution controls are part of the system rather than left to a prompt alone.

What can I use instead of text-to-SQL?

There is no single replacement that fits every organization. Choose among four patterns based on how repeatable the questions are, how much governance they need, and where the data already lives.

  • Semantic layer or semantic store: define approved business terms, metrics, tables, and joins in a shared layer so an AI can interpret questions against those definitions.
  • Governed data agent: restrict an agent to selected schemas and instructions, validate its proposed query, and execute it under the user’s identity or permissions.
  • Reviewed aliases and query blueprints: map familiar questions to reviewed, parameterized query patterns. This can make recurring questions more predictable than generating a fresh query each time.
  • Conversational analytics inside a BI or lakehouse platform: ask questions in a system already connected to governed data models, with its own glossary, verified queries, or instructions.

These are not always mutually exclusive. A useful design may combine a semantic model with a governed agent, and use reviewed blueprints for the questions that matter most. In each case, the aim is not simply to make an AI produce syntactically valid SQL; it is to make the result reflect the right business meaning and the asking user’s authority.

Why is unconstrained text-to-SQL risky for business data?

A natural-language question often leaves out details that a database query must specify: which metric definition applies, which date field to use, how tables relate, and what a business phrase means in the organization’s data. A query can run successfully and still answer the wrong question.

For example, “sales last quarter” could depend on whether the organization means booked revenue, invoiced revenue, or recognized revenue, and which date marks a sale. “Customers in Springfield” may match more than one place or may not match the exact values stored in a database. A free-form generator has to infer these choices unless the system supplies definitions or asks the user to clarify.

There is a separate access problem. A model’s instructions are not a substitute for database permissions. If the execution connection can read more than the user should see, a prompt saying “only show this user’s data” does not enforce that boundary. Security has to be applied by the data platform or another trusted execution layer, using controls such as least-privilege connections, row-level authorization, column masking, or tenant-aware secure views.

Governed alternatives address these risks in different ways. Semantic definitions improve meaning; schemas and validation constrain possible queries; aliases and blueprints make repeated requests more deterministic; and execution-time authorization limits what the system can return. No architecture automatically guarantees correct answers, so buyers still need to test real questions, access rules, and failure behavior.

How does a semantic layer make AI answers more reliable?

A semantic layer gives the system a governed description of what business concepts mean and how they map to data. It can centralize definitions of metrics, fields, tables, and joins instead of asking a model to reconstruct them from raw database structure on every request.

Semantic store as a separate, governed context

Oracle’s Enterprise AI NL2SQL documentation describes a semantic store that maps business terms to database fields, tables, and joins. Its architecture separates enrichment from a lower-privileged query connection and authorizes execution with the end user’s permissions. Oracle states: “NL2SQL generates SQL only; it does not run the query.” That separation matters: generating a candidate query and deciding whether it can run are distinct responsibilities.

This pattern is useful when a company needs common definitions and joins to be reused across questions, while keeping query execution subject to data access policy. The semantic content helps explain the data; the lower-privileged connection and user-aware authorization govern access. The design does not make a semantic store itself an authorization system, so execution permissions still need to be enforced independently.

Semantic knowledge plus deterministic aliases

EDB documents two complementary tools in its semantic knowledge base. An agent can search schema and join information for open-ended analytics, while reviewed semantic aliases can provide deterministic, parameterized SELECT statements for recurring questions. EDB describes both search and alias tools as read-only.

This distinction helps with mixed workloads. A new or exploratory question may need schema discovery, while a common operational question can use a reviewed pattern with parameters. A team can reserve aliases for questions where consistency is especially important, without requiring every possible question to be anticipated in advance. Read-only behavior is a useful boundary, but it is not the same as row-level authorization; verify which user and database permissions apply when a query runs.

Semantic graphs and vendor claims

Sema presents a vendor-described semantic graph approach with governed planning, sandboxed static-analyzed read-only SQL, row-level access, column masking, query logging, visualization, and signed evidence. Those are product claims, not independent comparative test results. Treat them as capabilities to validate in a proof of concept: confirm what is enforced by the product, what depends on the underlying data platform, and what evidence is retained for a particular answer.

How do governed data agents differ from free-form SQL generation?

A governed agent narrows the context and execution path available to an AI. Instead of exposing every database object and accepting any generated query, the design can select schemas, provide instructions and examples, check a query against the allowed schema, and execute it through a controlled connection.

Microsoft Fabric data agents

Microsoft documents Fabric data agents as using selected schemas, source instructions, and example queries. The standard flow retrieves similar examples, generates T-SQL, validates it against the approved schema, and executes it through the SQL analytics endpoint. Microsoft describes standard NL2SQL as “optimized for stable, predictable behavior” and recommends it for production agents where consistent output between releases is important.

Advanced NL2SQL is a separate preview path. It can perform multiple reasoning steps, resolve filters, inspect schema, or ask a clarifying question. That can be useful when a question needs more interpretation, but preview status means teams should verify current availability, support terms, and operational suitability before making it a dependency.

For a production choice, distinguish the standard flow from the advanced preview rather than treating “Fabric data agent” as one uniform capability. Test whether the selected schemas and examples cover the questions users ask, how validation behaves when the model proposes an unsupported field, and whether results respect the intended identity and access policy.

Execution control in Oracle’s pattern

Oracle’s documented architecture also separates SQL generation from execution. NL2SQL produces the SQL, while the Database Tools MCP Server authorizes and runs it with the user’s permissions. This is a concrete example of a broader architectural principle: a model may propose an action, but a trusted service should decide whether that action is authorized and execute it under the intended identity.

When assessing any agent, inspect the actual path from question to result. Establish which component selects data, which component validates the query, what credentials execute it, and which layer enforces row and column access. A natural-language interface can feel like one feature to a user while relying on several different security boundaries behind the scenes.

When should I use query aliases, blueprints, or value resolution?

Use curated query assets when a substantial share of requests are recurring or governed by known business logic. They give the system a reviewed pattern to fill in rather than requiring it to invent every part of the query from scratch.

Google Cloud QueryData context sets

Google Cloud QueryData uses context sets containing curated query blueprints, query facets, and value searches. The documented flow can resolve an informal value to an exact database value, match intent, return a disambiguation question, synthesize SQL, and execute it. This is particularly relevant when a company has recurring questions and terms whose stored values are not obvious from their everyday names.

Imagine a user asks for results in “the Bay Area,” but the source records use individual city names or a specific region label. A value-search step can help map the phrase to stored values; if more than one interpretation remains plausible, a clarification question is safer than silently choosing one. This example illustrates the design pattern, not a guarantee that every ambiguous phrase will be resolved correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Blueprints and facets can also carry policy logic for common questions. They are not a substitute for checking authorization: Google’s documentation separately describes parameterized secure views for row-level authorization and multi-tenant isolation. If an agent serves multiple users or tenants, that access boundary should be enforced in the view or data layer rather than relying on the question text to supply a tenant filter.

Where deterministic assets help—and where they do not

Reviewed aliases and blueprints are strongest when the intended operation can be expressed as a stable pattern with parameters. They reduce variation for known questions and make review more practical. They are less comprehensive for genuinely exploratory questions that do not fit an existing pattern, where schema-aware discovery or a governed agent may be necessary.

A sensible balance is to identify the highest-impact recurring questions first, define and review those query assets, and make the system’s behavior clear when a request falls outside them. Do not let a partial match masquerade as a supported answer. The user should be able to distinguish a result from a clarification request or an unsupported question.

Is conversational analytics in a BI platform a good alternative?

It can be a convenient choice when the organization already maintains governed BI models and wants natural-language exploration close to existing analytics. The trade-off is platform dependence and, in some cases, preview limits or roadmap changes that affect whether the feature is suitable for a new deployment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google Cloud conversational analytics

Google Cloud conversational analytics maps natural-language questions to table schemas, generates compatible SQL, executes it, and returns results with summaries or visualizations. Business glossaries, verified SQL queries, and system instructions can improve its grounding. Google documents the feature as Preview; confirm regional availability and support terms before relying on it for a production workload.

The documented Looker-query constraints are operationally important: the API allows one Explore at a time, has row and bytes-processed limits, has an 8,192-token output limit, can truncate result sizes, and may have reduced reasoning accuracy on large data volumes. These are not abstract edge cases if users expect broad, high-volume analysis or concurrent conversations. Test the actual query patterns and result sizes your users need, and confirm the limits applicable to your deployment.

Power BI Q&A and its roadmap

Power BI Q&A is a legacy BI-native option, but it is not a sound default for a new long-lived project without accounting for its announced retirement. Microsoft says Q&A experiences are going away in February 2027 and recommends Copilot for Power BI as the more advanced integrated alternative. Treat the date as a roadmap constraint: assess the migration path and current product requirements rather than building a new dependency on a feature with a stated sunset.

How should I compare these alternatives?

Compare systems against the business questions and control requirements you actually have. Product names alone do not tell you whether a particular setup can interpret your metrics, protect your data, or handle ambiguous values.

Evaluation area What to establish Why it affects the choice
Grounding and semantics Can it use approved metric definitions, joins, glossaries, and business terms? Without shared definitions, a valid query can still answer the wrong business question.
Determinism Can a recurring question use a reviewed alias or blueprint instead of a newly generated query? Stable patterns are easier to review and compare across repeated requests.
Security Are identity, least privilege, row-level security, column masking, and tenant isolation enforced at execution time? Prompt wording does not provide a reliable access boundary.
Ambiguity handling Can it resolve stored values, reveal its interpretation, or ask a clarifying question before execution? Unresolved names and filters are a common source of plausible but incorrect answers.
Source coverage Which warehouses, lakehouses, operational databases, documents, and federated sources are supported in the intended configuration? A system limited to one source may not cover the questions users want to ask.
Auditability Can the generated query be viewed, logged, versioned, and tied to supporting evidence? Reviewers need a way to investigate unexpected results and changes.
Performance and cost What row, bytes-processed, token, latency, and concurrency limits apply? Limits can affect both response quality and the number of users a deployment can serve.
Portability and operating model Can semantic definitions and query assets move across engines, or are they tied to one cloud or platform? Platform fit today should be weighed against future migration and maintenance needs.

There is no independent benchmark in the available first-party material comparing accuracy, latency, or total cost across these architectures. Do not treat a vendor feature description as a neutral performance ranking. Run a proof of concept on representative questions and compare the behavior of each candidate under the same definitions, permissions, and workload assumptions.

How do I choose the right architecture for my use case?

Start with the shape of the questions, then match the architecture to the degree of standardization and governance they require. A combination is often more practical than forcing exploratory analytics and highly repeatable reporting through one path.

Choose a semantic layer when definitions are the main problem

If teams disagree about what a metric means or how data sources join, prioritize a maintained semantic store or model. It creates a shared place for business language and relationships, which can support multiple question interfaces. Check how definitions are reviewed and changed, and how the query layer applies user-specific permissions.

Choose aliases or blueprints when repeatability matters most

If users ask the same questions with different dates, regions, or other parameters, reviewed query assets can constrain the operation more tightly than open-ended generation. Use value resolution or clarification for terms that map imperfectly to stored values. Keep a clear path for unsupported questions so a near match does not silently produce a misleading answer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a governed agent when questions vary but sources can be bounded

If users need flexible analysis over a known set of tables, a data agent can combine schema selection, instructions, examples, validation, and controlled execution. Evaluate both the question interpretation and the execution identity. For preview capabilities, establish their availability and support conditions in the regions and environments where the system will run.

Choose platform-native conversational analytics when integration is the priority

If a BI or lakehouse platform already contains the organization’s governed models, its conversational feature may reduce integration work and keep users near familiar analytics. Check the feature’s maturity, limits, and roadmap before adoption. A convenient interface does not remove the need to validate definitions, permissions, and query behavior.

What should I test before rolling out AI business-data queries?

Use a controlled evaluation that checks meaning, access, and operational behavior—not just whether the tool can return a result. Include business users and data owners because a query can be technically valid while still using the wrong definition.

  1. Select representative questions. Include common requests, questions with ambiguous dates or names, questions that need joins, and requests that should not be answerable for a particular user.
  2. Write down the intended meaning. For each question, specify the approved metric, time field, filters, and expected source. This gives reviewers a reference for judging the answer.
  3. Test ambiguity explicitly. Include informal or incomplete values and check whether the system resolves them transparently, asks a question, or exposes an unsupported assumption.
  4. Test permissions with distinct identities. Confirm that the same question returns only authorized rows and columns for each user or tenant. Verify enforcement at execution time, including any secure views or lower-privilege connections.
  5. Inspect the query and evidence trail. Determine whether reviewers can see or retrieve the executed query, logs, versioned definitions, and supporting evidence relevant to a result.
  6. Measure workload behavior. Exercise realistic result sizes, concurrency, and query complexity. Check platform-specific row, bytes-processed, token, latency, and truncation behavior.
  7. Define the unsupported-question path. Decide whether the system should ask for clarification, route the user to an analyst, or state that the request is not supported. Avoid silently broadening a query when a needed value or definition is missing.

For a first deployment, a bounded set of governed questions is easier to assess than unrestricted access to every source. Expand only after the definitions, permission boundaries, and failure behavior are understood. This is a rollout discipline, not a claim that a narrow deployment will automatically be accurate.

What are the main limitations and trade-offs?

Governance improves control, but it adds work and does not eliminate errors. The choice is about where to place the effort: maintaining definitions and reviewed query assets, configuring a constrained agent, or adopting a platform-native experience with its own limits and lifecycle.

  • Semantic content needs ownership. Business terms and joins change. If definitions are stale or incomplete, an AI can consistently use the wrong context.
  • Curated patterns cover a finite set of questions. Aliases and blueprints provide control for recurring requests, but open-ended exploration still needs a governed route.
  • Validation is not the same as correctness. A query that passes schema validation may still use an unintended metric or filter.
  • Access controls must be verified end to end. Read-only execution limits types of operation, but it does not by itself decide which rows a user is allowed to see.
  • Preview features carry deployment uncertainty. Google marks Conversational Analytics and QueryData as Preview, and Microsoft labels Advanced NL2SQL as Preview. Confirm release status, regional availability, data residency, pricing, and service-level support before committing.
  • Platform-specific controls can limit portability. Determine whether definitions, query assets, and security assumptions can move to another engine or are coupled to a single cloud environment.

The practical standard is not “never generate SQL.” Several governed approaches still synthesize SQL. It is whether approved business meaning, query constraints, user authorization, and a reviewable execution path surround that generation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does using a data agent mean business users never need SQL?

No. It changes who has to write the query for a supported question, not whether SQL exists in the system. Data teams may still need SQL to review query patterns, maintain models, troubleshoot results, and investigate unsupported requests.

Can an AI data agent safely answer questions across multiple tenants?

It can only be treated as safe for that purpose after tenant isolation is enforced and tested in the data-access path. Google’s documented use of parameterized secure views is one example of putting row-level authorization in the data layer rather than trusting a user prompt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should happen when the agent cannot tell which metric I mean?

It should ask a targeted clarification or report that the request is unsupported rather than silently choosing a definition. A useful evaluation includes questions where two approved metrics or stored values could plausibly match.

Do these alternatives make AI answers objectively more accurate?

The architectures provide mechanisms for grounding and control, but there is no independent cross-architecture benchmark here establishing a universal accuracy winner. Accuracy still depends on the definitions, examples, data, permissions, and test questions used in a particular deployment.
