For most teams, the best alternative depends on the boundary you need: choose gVisor when you want stronger isolation without abandoning OCI containers, Docker Sandboxes when each local coding agent needs a separate Linux kernel and Docker Engine, and Kubernetes Agent Sandbox when you need persistent, stateful, multi-tenant lifecycle management. A microVM generally gives a harder kernel boundary than a conventional container, but it is not automatically the right answer for every workload.

Anthropic’s published reference pattern is an ephemeral, server-side gVisor container: code runs away from the user’s machine, the filesystem is discarded after the session, and host access is deliberately limited. The alternatives below change that balance among isolation, persistence, compatibility, networking, and operational effort.

What is Anthropic’s sandbox-runtime model?

Anthropic describes a server-side execution environment in which Claude runs code inside a gVisor container on isolated infrastructure. Each session receives an ephemeral filesystem, and no generated code executes on the user’s local computer. That design limits the blast radius of a compromised dependency or malicious program, but it also prevents ordinary local-filesystem access and makes persistence intentionally short-lived.

The important idea is not a particular product name; it is the trust-boundary trade-off. An agent becomes more useful as it can read files, retain state, reach services, install packages, and run longer-lived jobs. Each permission also gives an untrusted prompt, tool, dependency, or generated program more room to affect systems outside the sandbox. Compare alternatives by asking how much host access, persistence, networking, and operator control they grant.

Which alternative is best for isolating an AI agent?

There is no universal winner. Match the isolation boundary and operating model to the agent’s job rather than choosing the option with the strongest-sounding label.

Option Isolation boundary Workspace and persistence Best fit Main trade-off
gVisor Userspace application kernel through the OCI-compatible runsc runtime Container filesystems; persistence is designed by the operator Teams that already use Docker or Kubernetes and need a stronger boundary than an ordinary container Not a separate guest kernel; compatibility and performance differ from a virtual machine
Docker Sandboxes Lightweight microVM with its own Linux kernel and a separate Docker Engine Mountless, direct-mount, or clone workspace modes Local development and coding agents that need a contained Docker environment Requires hardware virtualization and supported host operating systems
Kubernetes Agent Sandbox Orchestration API; runtime can be gVisor or Kata Containers Warm pools, hibernation and resume, persistent storage, and scheduled deletion Stateful, singleton, multi-tenant agent workloads managed as a platform Requires operating and securing a Kubernetes control plane and its storage and networking
Firecracker or another microVM stack Separate guest kernel behind a virtual-machine boundary Defined by the surrounding platform Teams building a focused, high-isolation execution service You must supply orchestration, images, networking, storage, and policy integration
Kata Containers VM-grade pod or container boundary Defined by Kubernetes or another orchestrator Cluster workloads that need VM-style isolation with a container-oriented interface More infrastructure components than a shared-kernel container
Hardened OCI containers Shared host kernel with namespaces, capabilities, seccomp, and related controls Flexible mounts and volumes Trusted or moderately risky workloads where compatibility and density dominate A kernel escape affects the host boundary shared by containers

The last three categories are architectural choices to investigate, not directly comparable, source-verified product recommendations. Their exact security and performance depend on implementation, configuration, kernel versions, and the platform around them.

How does gVisor isolate an AI agent?

gVisor inserts a userspace application kernel between the workload and the host kernel. Its runsc executable implements the OCI runtime specification and integrates with Docker and Kubernetes. Instead of letting the application issue system calls directly to the host kernel, gVisor handles those interfaces in a distinct per-sandbox application kernel. Google describes this as a strong layer of isolation between running applications and the host operating system.

Why gVisor is a close replacement

  • Container compatibility: existing OCI images and container-oriented workflows can usually remain the unit of deployment.
  • Reduced direct host-kernel exposure: the agent’s system calls are mediated by the userspace kernel rather than sent straight to the host.
  • Docker and Kubernetes integration: operators can select runsc as the runtime in environments that support it.
  • Operational continuity: logging, image distribution, and scheduling can follow established container practices.

What gVisor does not provide

gVisor is not a conventional virtual machine with a separate guest kernel. That difference affects the system-call surface, binary compatibility, performance characteristics, and failure modes. It is also not merely a seccomp filter, AppArmor profile, firejail wrapper, or another process policy. Those tools can complement gVisor, but they enforce a different boundary.

Use gVisor when the organization already understands container operations and wants to reduce escape risk without redesigning every workload around a VM. Test the agent’s language runtimes, debuggers, filesystem watchers, networking libraries, and package managers because unusual kernel behavior can expose compatibility issues.

What do Docker Sandboxes add for local coding agents?

Docker Sandboxes place each AI agent in a lightweight microVM with its own Linux kernel. Processes inside the sandbox are invisible to the host and to other sandboxes, and the sandbox uses a separate Docker Engine instead of the host daemon. Docker’s security model identifies the microVM as the primary trust boundary.

Which workspace mode should you use?

Mode Behavior Use it when Risk to check
Mountless The agent starts without a host workspace mounted into the VM. You want the smallest path from agent code to local files. Changes and artifacts must be exported deliberately.
Direct mount A host directory is mounted read-write into the sandbox. The agent must edit the working tree in place and the repository is already trusted. A compromised agent can alter or delete mounted files.
Clone The host repository remains read-only while the sandbox works on a private in-VM clone. You want normal coding workflows without giving the VM write access to the host checkout. You need a controlled method to review and copy changes back.

How are networking and credentials handled?

Docker documents deny-by-default proxied outbound networking. You can permit only the destinations required by the task rather than giving the agent unrestricted egress. Credential injection is performed through a host-side proxy, so credential values do not need to be placed inside the VM. Treat that proxy as a sensitive policy component: authenticate requests, log access, scope tokens narrowly, and revoke them when the session ends.

What host requirements apply?

On local Linux, Docker lists a 64-bit processor, KVM hardware virtualization, Ubuntu 24.04 or later, and membership in the kvm group. On macOS, local sandboxes require Sonoma 14 or later on Apple silicon. On Windows, they require Windows 11 and Windows Hypervisor Platform. A host that lacks hardware virtualization or the required hypervisor support cannot provide the documented local microVM boundary.

When is Kubernetes Agent Sandbox the right choice?

Kubernetes Agent Sandbox is a Kubernetes-native API for isolated, stateful, singleton workloads. It addresses lifecycle and tenancy as much as process isolation. The project documents warm pools for faster allocation, hibernation and resume, persistent storage, scheduled deletion, and software-development kits for programmatic management.

How its runtime-neutral design works

The API separates the workload contract from the isolation implementation. A cluster can pair the same orchestration model with gVisor for userspace-kernel isolation or Kata Containers for VM-grade isolation. That lets a platform team standardize admission, storage, scheduling, expiration, and observability while choosing a runtime per risk class.

Workloads it targets

  • Untrusted code execution that must survive beyond one short request
  • Agentic web browsing and computer-use tasks
  • Data-analysis jobs that need persistent intermediate files
  • Singleton agents that should hibernate and resume rather than rebuild state

What you must operate

This option is strongest when a team already runs Kubernetes as a product platform. You remain responsible for the control plane, node hardening, runtime selection, image supply chain, persistent-volume access, network policy, identity, upgrades, and incident response. Warm pools reduce allocation latency but consume capacity; hibernation saves resources but requires reliable state restoration and explicit handling of secrets that must not remain in suspended memory or storage.

Are Firecracker and Kata Containers stronger than ordinary containers?

Firecracker microVMs and Kata Containers use a separate guest-kernel boundary, which is generally harder for an application escape to cross than a conventional container’s shared host kernel. The exact protection still depends on the hypervisor, guest image, device model, host configuration, and orchestration layer. A microVM is not a substitute for least privilege, network policy, or careful credential handling.

Firecracker is a building block rather than a complete agent platform. Teams adopting it must design image distribution, VM creation, snapshot or resume behavior, persistent storage, networking, identity, logging, and cleanup. Kata Containers presents a more container-oriented interface and is commonly evaluated as a Kubernetes runtime, but it still adds VM lifecycle and compatibility considerations.

Choose a microVM architecture when a separate guest kernel is a hard requirement, when agents execute genuinely hostile or highly variable code, or when the team can absorb the platform engineering needed to make the boundary repeatable. Choose gVisor when OCI compatibility and simpler operations are more valuable than a separate kernel.

How much stronger is a microVM than a container for an AI coding agent?

A microVM changes the kernel boundary: the agent interacts with a guest kernel, while a standard container shares the host kernel. That materially reduces the direct path from a kernel vulnerability in the workload to the host. gVisor occupies the middle ground by interposing a userspace kernel, reducing direct host-kernel exposure without running a full guest kernel.

“Stronger” does not mean “safe by default.” A direct read-write host mount can still expose source code to an agent inside a microVM. An unrestricted network can still let a prompt-injected tool exfiltrate data. A broad credential proxy can still authorize destructive actions. Compare the complete system: kernel boundary, filesystem mode, egress policy, secret delivery, identity, and cleanup.

No common authoritative benchmark establishes normalized startup time, memory overhead, throughput, or price across these options. Do not select one from an unqualified performance number. Measure your own agent image, package-install pattern, filesystem workload, network policy, and concurrency target under the same host and region conditions.

How should you evaluate an isolation design?

Use a repeatable threat and workload review before committing to a runtime. The following sequence keeps security decisions separate from convenience assumptions.

  1. Define the adversary. Include malicious prompts, compromised packages, hostile repositories, untrusted pull requests, browser content, stolen tokens, and an agent that intentionally attempts escape.
  2. List required capabilities. Record whether the agent needs host files, write access, nested containers, package installation, browsers, GPUs, long-running processes, inbound connections, or persistent volumes.
  3. Choose the kernel boundary. Select shared-kernel controls, gVisor’s userspace kernel, or a separate-kernel microVM based on the consequence of an escape.
  4. Choose the workspace mode. Prefer mountless or clone-based workspaces for untrusted code. Use direct read-write mounts only when the workflow genuinely requires them and the repository is within the trust model.
  5. Make egress deny-by-default. Allow only package registries, source-control endpoints, APIs, or browsers that the task needs. Separate DNS, HTTP, and raw-socket permissions where the platform permits.
  6. Design secret delivery. Keep credentials outside the guest or container when possible, issue short-lived scoped tokens, and ensure logs cannot reveal values.
  7. Set lifecycle limits. Define maximum runtime, idle timeout, storage quota, scheduled deletion, and what happens to artifacts after termination.
  8. Test escape and abuse cases. Attempt unauthorized file reads, metadata access, privilege escalation, network exfiltration, fork or disk exhaustion, and credential reuse. Record both blocked events and false positives.
  9. Measure the real workload. Capture startup latency, peak memory, package-install time, test throughput, concurrent sessions, and cleanup time for the exact agent image.
  10. Document ownership. Assign responsibility for runtime patches, host kernels, Kubernetes components, image scanning, policy review, and incident response.

Which isolation pattern fits common AI-agent workloads?

Short-lived code execution with no local files

An ephemeral gVisor container closely matches Anthropic’s reference model. Keep the filesystem disposable, block inbound access, restrict outbound destinations, and return only selected artifacts. This is a good default for generated snippets, tests, and data transformations that do not need to persist.

Local repository editing

A Docker Sandbox clone workspace gives the agent a private writable copy while keeping the host checkout read-only. Require an explicit review or export step before changes reach the host. A direct mount is simpler but widens the consequence of destructive commands.

Untrusted repositories and dependency installation

Use a microVM or gVisor with a tightly constrained network and no host write access. Treat installation scripts, build hooks, and test fixtures as executable input. Cache dependencies outside the sandbox only through a controlled, integrity-checked service.

Persistent, interactive agents

Kubernetes Agent Sandbox is appropriate when sessions need hibernation, resume, persistent volumes, or scheduled cleanup. Pair the API with gVisor or Kata Containers according to the required boundary, and isolate tenants with separate identities, storage policies, and network rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

High-consequence production actions

Do not rely on isolation alone. Put approval gates, narrow service accounts, transaction limits, and human review around actions such as deleting data, changing infrastructure, or sending messages. The sandbox limits where code runs; it does not determine whether an authorized API call is wise.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How do filesystem, network, and credential choices change the risk?

These controls often matter as much as the runtime label.

  • Filesystem: ephemeral storage limits persistence; clone mode protects the host checkout; direct mounts trade isolation for convenience; persistent volumes require ownership, encryption, quotas, and deletion rules.
  • Network: deny-by-default egress reduces data-exfiltration paths. Permit destinations by task, not by broad protocol alone, and account for DNS rebinding, redirects, and package mirrors.
  • Credentials: inject short-lived, least-privilege tokens through a proxy or workload identity where possible. Never place a long-lived developer credential in an image or shared environment variable.
  • Observability: record session identity, image digest, runtime, policy decisions, outbound destinations, volume attachments, and termination reason. Keep sensitive payloads out of logs.

What can go wrong, and how do you recover?

The agent cannot install a package

Check whether outbound access is blocked, the package mirror is not allow-listed, or the runtime lacks a required system call. Prefer adding one documented destination or compatibility exception rather than opening unrestricted egress or switching off isolation.

Build tools fail only inside gVisor

Compare the failing system calls and filesystem behavior with the runtime’s compatibility guidance. Replace unsupported tooling, pin a compatible image, or move that workload to a microVM after reviewing the threat model. Do not assume a failure proves the runtime is insecure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Changes disappear after shutdown

That is expected for ephemeral or mountless sessions. Export an explicit patch, artifact bundle, or signed result before termination. For recurring work, attach controlled persistent storage or use a clone workflow with a review step.

A sandbox can reach more data than intended

Inspect mounts, service-account permissions, metadata endpoints, inherited environment variables, and proxy rules. Recreate the session with a minimal policy; do not repair a contaminated environment by merely deleting one file.

Warm pools or suspended sessions retain sensitive state

Define what is allowed to remain in memory, disk, and snapshots. Encrypt persistent storage, expire suspended instances, rotate credentials on resume, and destroy sessions that cannot be attested as clean.

What should you remember when choosing?

  • Anthropic’s reference pattern favors ephemeral, server-side execution in gVisor with no local-machine code execution.
  • gVisor is the practical container-oriented step up when you need a userspace-kernel boundary and OCI integration.
  • Docker Sandboxes provide a separate Linux kernel, isolated Docker Engine, workspace choices, proxied deny-by-default networking, and host-side credential injection for local agents.
  • Kubernetes Agent Sandbox solves lifecycle, persistence, and tenancy problems and can use either gVisor or Kata Containers as the runtime.
  • MicroVMs offer a separate guest-kernel boundary, but they still require least privilege, network controls, secret hygiene, testing, and operational ownership.
  • Performance and cost comparisons must come from measurements of your own workload; no normalized cross-product figures establish a universal winner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I run gVisor and a microVM in the same platform?

Yes. A Kubernetes-based platform can expose one workload API while assigning lower-risk sessions to gVisor and higher-risk sessions to a VM-grade runtime such as Kata Containers. Keep image, identity, storage, and network policies consistent so that moving a workload between runtimes does not silently broaden access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will a sandbox stop prompt injection from making an authorized API call?

No. Isolation constrains the process and its access paths; it does not judge whether an API request is socially engineered or operationally dangerous. Use scoped identities, approval gates, transaction limits, and policy checks for consequential actions.

What is the safest way to return files from an isolated coding session?

Return a narrowly selected artifact or signed patch through an explicit export channel rather than exposing a writable host directory. Scan and review the result before applying it, especially when the agent handled untrusted repositories or generated binaries.

Do I need Kubernetes to use a microVM for an AI agent?

No. A local or service-specific microVM stack can work without Kubernetes, but you must build the missing lifecycle, networking, storage, identity, observability, and cleanup controls yourself. Kubernetes becomes valuable when many tenants and long-lived sessions need standardized scheduling and policy.

How often should an agent sandbox be destroyed?

Destroy it at the end of the task when the filesystem is disposable and the agent has no legitimate reason to resume. For stateful sessions, use an explicit idle timeout and scheduled deletion, rotate credentials on resume, and retain only the artifacts required for audit or user workflow.
