Short answer: a standard smart washing machine is mainly connected, while an AI-labelled washer may use sensors and algorithms to make decisions during the cycle. Smart features include app control, remote start, alerts, diagnostics and downloadable cycles. An AI wash feature may estimate load size, fabric type, softness or soil level, then alter detergent dosing, water, temperature, time or drum motion. The two categories overlap, and “AI” is not a regulated class: only the exact model’s specification tells you what the label means.
Smart connection and AI washing solve different problems
Think of the terms as describing two layers of the same appliance. Smart describes how you connect to and control the washer. AI-labelled washing describes claimed sensing or automatic decision-making inside a wash program. A machine can be both smart and AI-enabled, but an app connection does not prove that the washer is analysing fabric or changing the wash process.

| Capability | What it usually means | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi and mobile app | Pairing the washer with a manufacturer app to monitor status, start or schedule a cycle, receive notifications, run diagnostics or download programs. | That the washer identifies fabric type, soil level or stains and changes the wash automatically. |
| Load detection | A sensor estimates the amount of laundry, often to set a basic water level or cycle time. | That the machine uses machine learning or adapts to every fabric in the drum. |
| AI wash feature | A named program or system that the manufacturer says infers characteristics such as weight, fabric softness or soil and adjusts one or more settings. | Better cleaning, lower bills or autonomous learning over time in every model. |
| Usage recommendations | The app suggests a cycle, sends maintenance reminders or remembers preferences. | That the drum controls are being changed by an in-cycle sensing system. |
Independent consumer guidance from Which? cautions that some products relabel established load detection or remembered programs as AI. Its wording is direct: “We’re seeing an increasing number of models claimed to have ‘AI’ (artificial intelligence) features that can analyse your laundry loads and set all the functions accordingly, but often there’s very little in the way of true AI in these machines.” Which? also reports that learning from use over time appears in only a handful of the machines it tests. Do not assume that an AI badge means the washer continually trains itself or becomes more accurate with every load.
What manufacturers mean by AI wash
Samsung AI OptiWash
Samsung’s US washer FAQ describes AI OptiWash on select Bespoke models. The company says the system detects fabric type, load size and soil level, then adjusts wash settings and detergent quantity. Those are specific claims about sensing and changing the wash, rather than merely controlling it from a phone. The same FAQ describes Wi-Fi and the SmartThings app as tools for controlling and monitoring compatible machines. Therefore, a particular model may provide both an adaptive wash system and the ordinary smart functions, but they are separate capabilities.

LG AI Wash
LG’s explanation of AI Wash says the washer weighs the laundry and senses fabric softness before selecting washing motions. LG lists ThinQ app functions separately on its connected models, including remote start, notifications, diagnostics and downloadable cycles. This separation is useful when reading a specification: “AI Wash” refers to the in-cycle decisions LG describes, while ThinQ features describe the networked controls and services.
Why the name is not enough
“AI Wash,” “AI OptiWash” and similar names are proprietary feature labels, not a common industry standard. One brand may use AI for a sensor-controlled cycle; another may use it for recommendations, automatic settings, voice features or energy management. Even two machines in the same range can differ by capacity, region, firmware and model number. Treat the feature list and operating notes for the exact local model as the specification, and treat the headline label as marketing shorthand.

What an adaptive washer can actually sense and change
The useful question is not whether a washer contains AI, but what inputs it measures and which outputs it controls. Look for all four parts of the chain:
- Input: weight, estimated fabric softness, fabric category, soil level or another named measurement.
- Decision: the algorithm classifies the load or chooses a setting.
- Output: detergent dose, water amount, temperature, wash time, rinse count, spin speed or drum motion changes.
- Conditions: the load size, fabric mix, cycle and options under which sensing is active.
Samsung’s description supplies examples of the first three inputs and outputs: fabric type, load size and soil level are detected, and settings plus detergent amount are adjusted. LG’s description identifies weight and fabric softness as inputs and washing motion as an output. If a product page says only “optimises your wash,” ask the manufacturer which measurements are made and which controls are altered.
Important limits that can stop AI sensing
Adaptive systems are conditional. LG states that its sensing may activate only under particular load conditions, may not operate when some options such as Steam are selected, and works best when the drum contains similar fabric types. A mixed load of towels, denim, synthetics and delicate items can therefore produce a less representative classification than a load with a consistent material and weight.

These limits matter because an AI cycle is not a guarantee that every item receives an individually optimised treatment. Read the manual for exclusions involving minimum or maximum load, pre-soaking, added options, detergent type, temperature and cycle selection. If sensing is bypassed, the washer may run the programmed defaults even though the machine carries an AI badge.

Does AI washing clean better or cost less?
There is no broad, independent head-to-head result showing that AI-labelled washers universally remove more stains, use less water or detergent, or consume less energy than standard smart models. A label alone cannot support those conclusions.
LG reports one narrowly defined result for its AI Wash cycle. In an Intertek comparison conducted in November 2023, LG says a 3 kg mixed load of soft fabrics had 10% better fabric protection and reduced energy consumption than the company’s Cotton cycle. LG also says results vary with the load and other factors. This is a manufacturer-reported comparison under specified conditions, not an independent comparison of all AI washers with all standard smart washers. It should not be converted into a promise of 10% savings or better cleaning in your home.
When evaluating an efficiency claim, record the reference cycle, load composition, measured resource, test laboratory, date and whether the figure is a one-time test result. Compare the model’s official energy and water information for your region rather than extrapolating from a feature name.
Connected functions a standard smart washer may provide
A washer can be genuinely useful without adaptive washing. Typical connected functions include:

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Starting, pausing or scheduling a cycle from a phone, subject to safety requirements and the model’s remote-start procedure.
- Notifications when washing finishes, when an error occurs or when maintenance is due.
- Remote diagnostics that transmit fault information to customer support.
- Downloadable or additional cycles that are not present as physical buttons.
- Energy monitoring or recommendations in the manufacturer’s app.
- Integration with a voice assistant or wider smart-home ecosystem, where the model and region support it.
These functions answer “Can I control and monitor the washer conveniently?” They do not answer “Can the washer identify my fabric and alter the wash?” Check whether the app requires a specific operating system, account, Wi-Fi band or cloud service, and whether remote start must be enabled at the machine before it can be used.
How to compare two exact models
Use the model numbers sold in your country. Similar names can hide different capacities, dimensions, software and feature availability. Work through the following sequence before deciding.
- Write down the adaptive claim. Copy the exact wording: for example, “detects fabric type, load size and soil level” or “weighs laundry and senses softness.” Avoid a general note such as “has AI.”
- Identify the changed settings. Record whether the machine adjusts detergent, water, temperature, time, rinses, spin or drum motion. If the documentation does not say, mark the item as not stated rather than inferring it.
- Read the exclusions. Note cycles, options, load sizes and fabric mixes that disable or limit sensing. Include any requirement to use a particular detergent dispenser.
- Separate app features. List remote start, alerts, diagnostics, downloads, energy tools and voice control independently from wash sensing.
- Check core fit. Compare drum capacity, external dimensions, door clearance, cycle choices, noise information and installation requirements. An adaptive feature is not useful if the washer does not fit or cannot handle your normal loads.
- Verify local documentation. Confirm the model number, software support, app compatibility and availability in your market. Do not rely on a review of a similarly named overseas variant.
- Evaluate evidence. Label each benefit as a manufacturer description, an independent test or an unverified marketing statement. Keep test conditions attached to any percentage or savings figure.
| Comparison axis | Questions for each model |
|---|---|
| Sensing | What does it detect: weight, fabric, softness, soil or something else? |
| Adjustment | Which wash settings or motions change, and is detergent dosing automatic? |
| Limits | Which cycles, options, fabrics or load sizes bypass the system? |
| Connectivity | Which app, notifications, diagnostics, downloads and voice controls are included? |
| Washer fundamentals | What are capacity, dimensions, cycle range, energy information and water information? |
| Evidence quality | Is a benefit documented by the manufacturer, tested independently or merely implied by “AI” wording? |
| Market version | Is this the exact model sold in your region, with current software and support? |
When a standard smart washer is the better choice
Choose a conventional smart model when your priority is remote monitoring, notifications, diagnostics or downloadable cycles and the adaptive claims are vague. You may also prefer one when you normally sort laundry carefully, use specialist cycles or want manual control over detergent, temperature and timing. A simpler control system can make the washer easier for other household members to operate, while app functions still provide convenience.
Do not pay extra solely for the word AI unless the documented sensing addresses a problem you actually have, such as variable mixed loads or frequent uncertainty about detergent quantity. Capacity, fit, cycle performance, service support and published resource information remain more concrete purchasing criteria.

An adaptive system may be worthwhile if you regularly wash changing load sizes and fabrics and want the machine to make repeatable adjustments without manual calculation. Automatic detergent dosing or motion selection can reduce the number of settings you choose, provided your loads fall within the supported conditions. The benefit is practical only when the model explains its inputs, outputs and limits and when those limits match your routine.

Even then, retain manual cycles for items that need specific treatment. Follow garment-care labels, use the recommended detergent and check the selected cycle before starting. Sensing is an aid to control, not a substitute for sorting, stain treatment or care instructions.

Samsung’s Global Newsroom announced a Bespoke AI washer and dryer lineup on July 14, 2026, describing AI Wash+ and AI Dry+ features alongside SmartThings energy management. The announcement said market introduction would begin in July in select markets and that availability would vary by region and model. An announcement is not proof that every listed feature is sold where you live. Check the local product page, manual and retailer model number for current availability, software support and included functions.
Regional differences can affect more than the plug and language. Capacity ratings, cycle names, energy labels, app services, voice integrations and even the presence of an AI feature can change between markets. Record the full model code before comparing specifications or downloading instructions.

Confusing an app with adaptive washing
A phone notification proves that the washer is connected, not that it analysed the load. Look for a separate description of sensors and in-cycle adjustments.
Assuming “AI” means machine learning over time
Only a small number of tested machines are reported by Which? to learn from use over time. Unless the documentation explicitly describes learning, treat the feature as a fixed sensing-and-control routine.

Applying one brand’s definition to another
Samsung’s AI OptiWash and LG’s AI Wash describe different inputs and outputs. Compare the written specification, not the shared word AI.
Ignoring disabled modes
Options such as Steam or unsuitable fabric mixes may prevent sensing on some LG models. Read the limitations before assuming every load receives adaptive treatment.
Turning a laboratory percentage into a household guarantee
The LG 10% fabric-protection figure comes from a November 2023 Intertek test of a 3 kg mixed soft-fabric load against the Cotton cycle. It does not establish universal stain removal, energy or detergent savings.
Buying an overseas variant by mistake
Verify the local model code and current regional documentation. A similarly named machine may omit the feature or use a different app.
A practical decision rule
Use this three-part test:
- Need: Do you want convenience features, in-cycle automatic adjustments, or both?
- Evidence: Does the exact model state what it senses, what it changes and when the system is unavailable?
- Fit: Does its capacity, size, cycle range, app support and published resource information suit your household?
If the answer to the first question is convenience only, a well-specified smart washer may be sufficient. If you want automatic wash decisions, select the model whose sensing and limits are documented clearly. If the evidence stops at an AI logo or a claim to “optimise” laundry, treat that as unproven rather than paying for an assumed benefit.
Bottom line for shoppers
Smart means connected control; AI-labelled wash means the manufacturer claims that sensors and algorithms make decisions during a cycle. The categories overlap, but neither label guarantees superior cleaning, lower running costs or long-term learning. Compare the exact model’s sensors, adjustments, operating limits, core washer specifications, app requirements and regional availability. The best choice is the washer whose documented behaviour matches your loads—not the one with the most prominent AI badge.
