Short answer: no AI video generator is a universal winner for physically correct motion and stable video continuity. In the cited Video-Bench leaderboard, Gen3 has the highest temporal-consistency score (4.74/5), ahead of Kling (4.38) and CogVideoX (4.14). A separate VideoPhy evaluation puts CogVideoX-5B first on its combined semantic-adherence and physical-commonsense measure (39.6), while a Stanford AI Index 2026 summary lists Veo 3 at 66.7% and Vidu Q1 at 62.7% on VBench-2.0. Those results measure different things, use different prompts and evaluators, and may involve different model versions.
A video can look cinematic while violating gravity, momentum, object permanence, fluid behavior or optical rules. Choose a generator by the dimension your shot needs: temporal consistency for identity and continuity, physics accuracy for believable interactions, and semantic adherence for following the written action.

What “realistic motion” means in an AI video
Two independent tests are often confused:
| Dimension | What it asks | Typical failure |
|---|---|---|
| Temporal consistency | Do the same objects, body parts, geometry and camera remain coherent from frame to frame? | A face, logo or limb changes shape; a prop disappears; the camera jumps. |
| Physics accuracy | Does the action obey gravity, collisions, rigidity, conservation, fluid behavior, optics, thermodynamics and state changes? | A ball accelerates upward, a collision transfers no momentum, or a glass object breaks without a plausible force. |
| Semantic adherence | Did the model perform the action described in the prompt? | The prompt requests a red cube rolling downhill, but the cube slides, changes color or never reaches the bottom. |
| Motion quality | Does movement look natural and free of warping, merging and discontinuities? | Feet melt into the floor, fingers merge, or an articulated object bends like rubber. |
A high temporal score does not prove that a falling object accelerates correctly. Conversely, a physically plausible short action can still suffer from identity drift or a discontinuous camera. Report these dimensions separately rather than assigning one “realism” score.
Is there one best model for physics?
No. Rankings change with the benchmark, prompt type, evaluator, model version and date. Physics-IQ found severe limits across systems and tested domains even when outputs appeared realistic. PhyWorldBench, VideoPhy and VBench-2.0 use different task designs, so their leaders cannot be placed on a single universal ladder.

For production, treat a benchmark result as evidence about a narrow capability. A model that performs well on rigid-body prompts may still fail at pouring liquid or preserving a person’s hands during a long shot. Test the exact action, duration and camera language you intend to deliver.
What the major benchmarks actually measure
Video-Bench: frame-to-frame continuity
Video-Bench rates temporal consistency and motion effects on a 1–5 scale. The cited leaderboard reports these temporal-consistency results:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

| Model | Temporal consistency |
|---|---|
| Gen3 | 4.74/5 |
| Kling | 4.38/5 |
| CogVideoX | 4.14/5 |
| Show-1 | 3.90/5 |
| VideoCrafter2 | 3.69/5 |
| Pika-Beta | 3.40/5 |
| LaVie | 3.00/5 |
These are leaderboard snapshots and may represent older versions. They indicate visual continuity—not correct acceleration, momentum, impact forces or material behavior. Gen3’s lead therefore answers “which listed system kept imagery stable in this test?” rather than “which system understands mechanics?”
VideoPhy: physical commonsense plus prompt adherence
Microsoft’s AVGen-Bench VideoPhy reports semantic adherence (SA) and physical commonsense (PC). In the listed combined SA=1, PC=1 column, the scores are:
| Model | Combined SA=1, PC=1 score |
|---|---|
| CogVideoX-5B | 39.6 |
| Pika | 19.7 |
| VideoCrafter2 | 19.0 |
| CogVideoX-2B | 18.6 |
| LaVIE | 15.7 |
This column rewards a clip that both follows the requested event and exhibits the expected physical commonsense. It is not a general image-quality score, and it should not be compared numerically with the Video-Bench 1–5 ratings.
Physics-IQ: principle-level reasoning
Physics-IQ tests fluid dynamics, optics, solid mechanics, magnetism and thermodynamics. Its central finding is that visual realism does not imply physical understanding. The evaluation includes Sora, Runway, Pika, Lumiere, Stable Video Diffusion and VideoPoet, making it useful for discussing whether a system respects principles rather than merely producing attractive cinematography.

PhyWorldBench: interactions, conservation and anti-physics
PhyWorldBench evaluates 1,050 curated prompts spanning basic object motion and energy conservation, rigid-body interactions, and human or animal motion. It also includes an Anti-Physics category: prompts intentionally ask for an impossible event. That category tests whether a model follows an explicit instruction consistently instead of automatically reproducing a familiar real-world pattern. In the described evaluation, Pika was the strongest proprietary model, but the result is a benchmark snapshot tied to that prompt set and project version.
VBench-2.0: broad faithfulness
The Stanford AI Index 2026 describes VBench-2.0 as a faithfulness-oriented benchmark covering human fidelity, creativity, controllability, physics and commonsense. Its early-2026 comparison lists Veo 3 at 66.7% and Vidu Q1 at 62.7%. Those totals combine several dimensions, so they should not be read as pure physics percentages. The report’s broader conclusion is that even leading systems remain imperfect on complex stories and on keeping object or scene dynamics consistent.
How the leading generators should be interpreted
Gen3 (Runway)
Gen3 is the temporal-consistency leader in the cited Video-Bench table. That makes it a strong candidate when a shot depends on stable appearance, camera continuity and coherent short-term motion. The score does not establish superior collisions, fluids or conservation; you still need physics-specific tests for those tasks.
Kling
Kling ranks second among the listed systems for Video-Bench temporal consistency. It is therefore a credible option when keeping subjects and scenes visually stable is more important than proving a physical law. Treat the ranking as historical to the leaderboard’s model version rather than a guarantee for the current service.
CogVideoX
CogVideoX appears in both benchmark families: it scores 4.14/5 for temporal consistency in Video-Bench, and CogVideoX-5B leads the listed VideoPhy combined column. That cross-benchmark presence makes it an interesting candidate for prompts that require both an identifiable action and plausible physical commonsense. The two scores still come from different protocols and should not be merged.
Pika
Pika is the strongest proprietary model in the described PhyWorldBench evaluation and scores 19.7 in the listed VideoPhy column. Its Pika-Beta entry in Video-Bench has a lower temporal-consistency score than the leaders in that table. This contrast illustrates why a model can perform well on a physics-oriented prompt set without being the best at long-term visual continuity.

OpenAI Sora
OpenAI’s Sora technical report, dated February 15, 2024, says the system can generate up to one minute of high-fidelity video but also documents important limits. The report states, “Sora currently exhibits numerous limitations as a simulator,” and specifically says it “does not accurately model the physics of many basic interactions, like glass shattering.” It also notes that eating-food examples do not always produce the correct change in an object’s state, and that long samples can develop incoherencies or spontaneous object appearances. These are developer-documented limitations, not evidence that every Sora clip fails, but they rule out treating visual polish as proof of physical simulation.
Google Veo 3 and Vidu Q1
Veo 3 and Vidu Q1 are the two named systems in the early-2026 VBench-2.0 summary, with totals of 66.7% and 62.7%, respectively. Because VBench-2.0 combines human fidelity, creativity, controllability, physics and commonsense, the totals are useful for broad faithfulness but cannot identify which model wins a particular collision, fluid or optics test.

Why AI video looks real while moving incorrectly
Appearance is easier than causality
Generative models can reproduce visual cues associated with slow motion, impact, splashes or camera shake without calculating forces. A convincing blur trail may be stylistically correct while the object’s trajectory violates gravity.
Each frame is only conditionally connected
The model predicts a sequence from learned visual patterns, not from a persistent scene graph with exact object positions, masses and material properties. Small errors compound: a hand shifts, a tool changes length, and the next frames adapt to the altered image.
Occlusion hides state errors
When an object passes behind a person or leaves the frame, the generator must infer its return. It may reappear with a different shape, color or orientation. Long shots expose these hidden-state mistakes more often than short clips.
Rare events are underrepresented
Common actions such as walking and panning have abundant visual examples. Precise glass fracture, multi-body collisions, magnetic effects or thermodynamic changes are rarer and harder to infer from appearance alone.

How to test a generator for your own project
Use a small, repeatable test rather than judging one impressive demo.
- Define the required law. Write down whether the shot depends on gravity, conservation of momentum, rigid contact, fluid continuity, optics, a material break or a biological joint.
- Make the initial state explicit. Specify object count, relative positions, surfaces, lighting and camera. “A 1-kilogram red ball starts at shoulder height above a concrete floor” is more testable than “a ball falls.”
- Ask for one dominant event. Separate a drop, a collision and a liquid pour into individual clips before combining them. Multiple simultaneous events make failures harder to diagnose.
- Render several seeds or attempts. Save the prompt, model/version, duration, aspect ratio and controls for every attempt. A single successful take cannot establish reliability.
- Inspect at reduced speed. Check acceleration, contact timing, deformation, object count, entry and exit positions, and whether the camera obeys its instruction.
- Score the dimensions separately. Give temporal consistency, physics accuracy, semantic adherence and motion quality independent 0–5 ratings. Average only the dimensions that matter to the shot.
- Extend the duration gradually. Test the same action at the target length. A model may remain coherent for five seconds and fail when the shot runs longer.
Prompt patterns that expose physics weaknesses
- Gravity: “A steel ball falls from a fixed height, accelerates downward, strikes a rigid floor and rebounds with a lower peak.” Check whether the path and bounce sequence are monotonic and repeatable.
- Collision: “A moving billiard ball strikes a stationary ball; both remain rigid and separate after contact.” Watch for merging, unexplained energy gain or a direction change before impact.
- Material state: “A glass tumbler hits a tiled floor and breaks at the impact point.” Inspect the fracture timing and whether shards obey the initial motion.
- Fluid behavior: “Water pours continuously from a tilted pitcher into a cup, with a stable stream and rising level.” Look for disconnected streams, changing liquid color or a cup that never fills.
- Optics: “A coin behind a glass of water appears displaced by refraction while the glass remains stationary.” Check whether the displacement is tied to the glass and camera rather than drifting independently.
- Human motion: “A runner plants the left foot, bends the knee and pushes off without sliding.” Examine foot contact, joint limits and body balance frame by frame.
Which model fits which use case?
| Project need | What to prioritize | How to choose |
|---|---|---|
| Character continuity, logos or product shots | Temporal consistency and geometry stability | Start with systems that rank highly on continuity tests, then inspect identity drift at the final shot length. |
| Impact, bounce or rigid-body animation | Physics accuracy, contact timing and conservation | Use physics-oriented prompts and VideoPhy or PhyWorldBench-style checks; do not rely on a visual-quality demo. |
| Liquids, smoke or transparent materials | Fluid and optics behavior | Run dedicated pours, splashes and refraction tests; expect more retries or compositing. |
| Complex multi-action stories | Semantic adherence, controllability and long-duration stability | Break the story into shots, use start/end-frame controls where available, and assemble the sequence in editing software. |
| Impossible or stylized physics | Instruction following and Anti-Physics performance | State the deliberate violation explicitly and verify that it persists rather than reverting to a familiar real-world pattern. |
Common failure modes and practical fixes
Objects merge or multiply
Reduce the number of interacting objects, assign each a distinct color and material, and keep the camera angle simple. Generate separate elements and composite them when continuity remains unstable.
Contact happens before impact
Use a shorter shot with a fixed camera and describe the event in ordered phases: approach, contact, separation. If timing still slips, create the approach and impact as separate clips and cut on contact.
Long takes drift
Shorten the generation window, anchor the start and end frames, and use a shot list instead of one paragraph describing an entire sequence. Re-establish the subject between shots with a reference image or consistent visual description.
Hands, faces or text warp
Reduce rapid articulation, avoid unnecessary camera motion and reserve critical text or interfaces for post-production overlays. Temporal stability is often more valuable than adding another action.
The model follows an impossible prompt inconsistently
Separate “what is physically impossible” from “what must remain consistent.” State the impossible rule once, define the starting state and test multiple attempts. Anti-Physics performance is a distinct instruction-following problem, not evidence of real physical understanding.
Bottom line for selecting an AI video generator
Use Gen3’s 4.74/5 Video-Bench result when your first concern is visual continuity, and view Kling and CogVideoX as strong alternatives within that historical table. Use CogVideoX-5B’s 39.6 VideoPhy result as evidence of performance on that benchmark’s combined adherence-and-commonsense task, not as a universal physics crown. Consider Pika’s PhyWorldBench result, Sora’s documented simulator limitations, and the VBench-2.0 Veo 3 and Vidu Q1 totals as separate pieces of evidence.
The reliable workflow is to choose a candidate, run physics-specific and continuity-specific prompts at the exact duration you need, and keep the scores separate. For shots where a wrong collision, state change or trajectory would be costly, plan for iteration, shot subdivision and conventional compositing rather than assuming any text-to-video model is a general-purpose physics engine.
