The most effective setup is a two-pass workflow: explore motion with the cheapest model and shortest useful duration, then spend credits only on a selected take. Choose the final aspect ratio before rendering, use the lowest resolution that lets you judge motion, lock a seed when refining a promising result, and trim the edit before upscaling or increasing frame rate. These choices prevent wasted seconds and avoid paying for high-resolution output that will be discarded.
There is no universal “best preset.” Model menus, credit units, duration limits and available resolutions differ, so check the platform’s estimate immediately before each generation. The settings below show how to make that decision deliberately.

Prioritize settings in this order: delivery format, action duration, draft-versus-final model, resolution, repeatability controls, and finishing operations. A technically sharp clip can still be unusable if it is cropped for the wrong destination or runs longer than the action requires. Conversely, rendering every experiment in 4K usually spends credits before you know whether the motion works.
- Delivery format: Pick the aspect ratio required by the platform or edit timeline first.
- Action duration: Generate only enough seconds for the movement to complete naturally.
- Model tier: Use a lower-cost model for prompt and motion exploration, then a higher-quality model for the approved idea.
- Resolution: Draft at the lowest useful setting and reserve 1080p or 4K for the chosen take.
- Seed and references: Lock a seed when you need controlled variations of a working shot.
- Finishing: Trim, upscale and change frame rate only after the edit is settled.
Changing one setting can alter the estimate. Treat the pre-generation estimate as authoritative for your account, model and current plan rather than relying on an old price chart.

How should I use cheap drafts before paying for final quality?
Run inexpensive tests to validate the prompt, camera movement and subject behavior. Once a take has the right action and composition, rerun that idea in the higher-quality model instead of spending the premium rate on every failed experiment.
Runway’s two Gen-4 tiers
Runway documents Gen-4 Turbo at 5 credits per second and Gen-4 at 12 credits per second. Turbo is intended for fast iteration; Gen-4 is the costlier finishing choice. A 10-second Turbo draft therefore uses 50 credits, while a 10-second Gen-4 render uses 120 credits, before any later processing.

| Use case | Recommended choice | Credit rate documented by Runway |
|---|---|---|
| Prompt, motion and camera exploration | Gen-4 Turbo | 5 credits per second |
| Shortlisted final generation | Gen-4 | 12 credits per second |
Keep the prompt, source image and intended framing consistent when moving from Turbo to Gen-4. The objective is not to make Turbo look final; it is to find out whether the idea works before buying the expensive render.
How many drafts should I make?
Stop iterating when a clip has acceptable subject identity, movement and framing, not when every artifact is gone. If the motion is fundamentally wrong, revise the prompt or reference image in the cheap tier. If the motion is right but detail is soft, promote that take to the final tier or finishing stage.
Should I choose a 5-second or 10-second clip?
Match duration to the action’s natural completion. Runway offers 5- and 10-second outputs: its guidance says a simple action can fit 5 seconds, while prompts containing multiple movements benefit from 10 seconds. Duration directly multiplies generation cost, so unused tail frames are paid-for waste.

Use 5 seconds when
- The shot contains one clear action, such as a turn, reveal or short camera push.
- The clip will be cut into a montage or loop.
- You can complete the movement without a long setup or reaction.
Use 10 seconds when
- The prompt requires sequential movements, such as walking, picking up an object and looking toward camera.
- The camera must travel far enough to establish a location.
- The subject needs time to enter, perform the action and exit naturally.
If a 10-second generation contains only 4 useful seconds, trim it in the edit and use the shorter duration for the next iteration. Do not ask a model for extra seconds “just in case” unless you have a specific editorial reason.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow do aspect ratio and resolution affect the result?
Choose the destination aspect ratio before generating. Runway supports 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:3, 3:4 and 21:9 outputs. If the selected resolution differs from the input image’s shape, the image can be cropped. Adobe Firefly also exposes model-specific aspect-ratio choices, so the available formats depend on the model you select.
Pick the shape for the final destination
| Destination | Typical ratio | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Landscape video players and presentations | 16:9 | Keep faces and titles away from the crop edges. |
| Vertical social feeds and phone-first stories | 9:16 | Frame the subject centrally enough to survive interface overlays. |
| Square posts or profile grids | 1:1 | Leave room above and below a moving subject. |
| Ultrawide banners or cinematic timelines | 21:9 | Confirm that the source image is not cropped severely. |
Generating in one ratio and cropping later can remove a face, prop or action. If you need both horizontal and vertical versions, plan separate generations or use a source composition with generous negative space; do not assume a crop will preserve the important content.
Draft low, finish high
Resolution is a finishing decision. Runway’s Gen-4 table lists 1280×720 for 16:9 and 720×1280 for 9:16. Adobe’s Firefly documentation lists Ray3.14 and Ray3.14 HDR at 720p, 1080p and 4K, while Veo 3.1 offers 720p or 1080p. Menus can be model-specific and may change.
Use the lowest resolution that lets you judge motion, continuity and composition. After selecting a take, render it at the required delivery resolution or use an upscaler. A high-resolution draft does not repair incorrect movement, so it is usually the wrong place to spend credits.

When does fixing the seed improve a generation?
A fixed seed is a repeatability control, not a quality switch. Runway says a fixed seed creates generations with similar motion; Adobe describes the same seed, prompt and controls as producing similar clips. Lock the seed after you have a promising movement and want controlled variations in wording, appearance or small details.
A practical seed workflow
- Generate exploratory clips with a changing or unspecified seed.
- Record the seed of the take whose motion and camera path you want to preserve.
- Keep the seed fixed while changing one variable, such as a color, prop or adjective.
- Release the seed when the current motion is wrong and you need genuinely different blocking.
Because a seed does not guarantee identical pixels or perfect continuity, compare the resulting motion rather than expecting frame-for-frame duplication. Save the prompt, source image, model, ratio, duration and seed together so a successful combination can be reproduced.
When should I upscale or increase frame rate?
Do both operations after trimming to the actual delivery cut. Upscaling a clip that will later be shortened pays for frames you will throw away, and frame-rate processing can multiply the same waste.
Upscaling limits and costs
Runway’s Upscale Video app keeps the source length and frame rate and requires clips longer than 40 seconds to be split. Luma supports up to 120 seconds per upscale job and reports approximately 10 credits per second at 1080p and 17 credits per second at 4K. Luma explicitly recommends trimming to the final delivery cut before upscaling.
| Finishing operation | Documented billing or limit | Cost-control action |
|---|---|---|
| Runway Upscale Video | Clips over 40 seconds must be split; source duration and frame rate are retained. | Trim first and split only the segments that need enhancement. |
| Luma video upscale | Up to 120 seconds per job; approximately 10 credits/second at 1080p and 17 credits/second at 4K. | Use 1080p unless 4K delivery is required, and remove unused frames before submission. |
| Runway API upscale | Billed by output frame. | Shorten the clip and avoid unnecessary output frames. |
| Runway API frame-rate enhancement | Billed by input seconds. | Apply it only to the final cut, not to every draft. |
For example, a 30-second Luma upscale is approximately 300 credits at 1080p or 510 credits at 4K, using the published per-second figures. Those are approximate calculations, not a universal account price; confirm the current estimate in the interface.

What frame-rate processing can and cannot fix
Increasing frame rate can make motion appear smoother, but it cannot correct a subject whose limbs change shape or an object that jumps between positions. Inspect the native clip at normal speed first. If the motion itself is unstable, regenerate with a better prompt or shorter action rather than trying to hide the problem with interpolation.

The following comparison is a workflow guide, not a permanent price list. Availability, partner models and plan entitlements can change, so verify each item in the current product interface.

Why does an AI video still look poor after changing settings?
The subject changes identity
Resolution will not stabilize a subject that changes clothing, facial structure or object design. Simplify the prompt, reduce simultaneous actions and use a fixed seed once you obtain a recognizable take.
The camera movement is incomplete
A long list of movements can exceed the model’s ability to maintain continuity. Break the idea into separate shots or give the action 10 seconds instead of adding more adjectives to a 5-second prompt.
Best Value
The image is cropped unexpectedly
This usually indicates a mismatch between the input image and output ratio. Regenerate with the delivery ratio selected from the start, or prepare a source image with more edge space.
The upscale looks soft or distorted
Upscaling enlarges existing information; it does not recreate a broken frame. Return to the cleanest native take, trim it, and upscale only that segment. If artifacts remain, regenerate the shot rather than stacking more enhancement passes.
The bill is higher than expected
Check whether duration, resolution, model, frame rate or an added effect changed. Pika states that these options affect credit cost and that its estimate appears before generation; use that estimate as the final preflight check.
What is a cost-efficient end-to-end workflow?
- Define the deliverable: Write down the final ratio, required resolution and target frame rate.
- Storyboard the action: Separate complex movements into shots and assign each the shortest useful duration.
- Explore cheaply: Generate Turbo or another lower-cost option at draft resolution.
- Keep a winner: Save the prompt, source, seed and settings for any take with usable motion.
- Refine deliberately: Fix the seed and change one control at a time so you know which change helped.
- Promote the shot: Render the approved idea in the higher-quality model or required native resolution.
- Edit first: Remove handles, failed starts and unused endings in the timeline.
- Finish once: Upscale or increase frame rate on the trimmed delivery cut, then inspect the result at normal playback speed.
This sequence keeps expensive operations at the end, where they affect only footage that has already earned a place in the edit. Since model names, menus and prices are volatile, verify the current controls and estimate immediately before purchase or rendering.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I reuse the same seed across different AI video models?
A seed is generally meaningful only within the model and control system that generated it. Copying the number into another model may not reproduce the motion, because implementations and randomization ranges differ.
Is it better to generate one long clip and cut it down?
Only when the action genuinely needs the extra time. A long source can provide editing handles, but you pay for every generated second and may introduce more opportunities for continuity errors; separate short shots are often more economical.
Can I change a clip from horizontal to vertical after generation without regenerating?
You can crop or reframe it in an editor, but important content may be lost and the composition may feel cramped. If the vertical version is a primary deliverable, generating in 9:16 usually preserves the subject more reliably than a late crop.
Does 4K always look better than 1080p for AI-generated footage?
Higher resolution increases pixel count but does not guarantee better anatomy, motion or texture. If the native generation contains temporal artifacts, 4K can make those defects more visible; use it when the delivery specification or a clean upscale justifies the extra cost.
