To make AI-generated video feel like one coherent production, control three things deliberately: the visual reference used for the recurring character, a shot-specific prompt that separates camera motion from subject action, and a continuation method that carries frames or edits forward. Character-reference tools can preserve a subject’s look across generations, while seeds mainly help reproduce similar motion. Neither is an identity lock, and no major vendor documentation establishes a universal continuity success rate. Build each shot as a small, clearly described unit, inspect it before expanding the sequence, and verify that the controls belong to the model and interface you are actually using.
Which AI video settings have the biggest effect on consistency?
Consistency comes from reducing the number of variables that change between shots. Keep the same or deliberately chosen reference image, describe one camera setup and one primary action per shot, and use explicit continuation controls when the product offers them. Treat every setting as a control aid rather than a guarantee: official product pages describe capabilities and intended use, not independently measured identity-retention or continuity rates.

How do I keep the same character in AI-generated videos?
Use the generator’s character-reference or image-reference mode, beginning with a clear, well-lit source image and reusing the same identity description. This can improve repeatability, but the model may still alter facial details, hair, clothing, hands, or props from frame to frame.

1. Create a reference that gives the model usable evidence
Choose a high-quality image with even, natural lighting and a visible view of the features that must recur. Avoid heavy shadows, extreme filters, motion blur, or an expression that hides the eyes and jawline. If wardrobe or a signature object matters, include it clearly rather than relying on a text-only description.
2. Use the supported number of references
Runway’s Gen-4 reference description says a generation can use up to three references for consistent subjects, styles, locations, and other visual elements. Google’s Veo 3.1 developer documentation also describes up to three reference images. Those are documented inputs, not a promise that every generated frame will match. If you use several images, make their identity cues agree; conflicting angles, ages, outfits, or lighting can give the model competing instructions.
3. Keep identity wording stable
Give the recurring subject a short, repeatable description after the reference is attached: for example, “the same middle-aged woman with a blunt dark bob, olive jacket, and silver pendant.” Change only the details that are meant to change. Do not rewrite the character description with new synonyms in every shot, because the model may interpret those changes as a new person.
4. Check the result before building the next shot
Inspect the face, hairline, skin tone, clothing seams, jewelry, carried objects, and body proportions. When one detail drifts, try a cleaner reference, fewer simultaneous actions, or a separate generation for that shot. These are practical iteration steps derived from how reference and shot controls are documented; they are not guaranteed fixes or a measured workflow.
What should an AI video prompt contain?
A reliable prompt gives the model one readable shot rather than a paragraph of competing events. State the subject and action, then the framing, camera position or movement, composition, focus, lighting, and ambience. For image-to-video, the source image already establishes much of the scene, so use the text primarily to describe motion.

A reusable shot formula
Framing and angle. Camera movement. Subject action. Environmental change. Focus and lighting. For example: “Medium eye-level shot. Slow dolly in as the subject turns toward the window. Curtains move slightly in a warm afternoon breeze. Keep the subject’s eyes in focus and preserve the soft, natural contrast.” This gives the generator one camera path and one main action.
Describe one dominant action
Combining “runs, falls, picks up a bag, waves, and spins toward camera” makes timing and continuity harder to control. Break the sequence into separate clips or beats. A single action also makes it easier to identify whether a problem came from the subject animation, the camera path, or a changing background.
Use positive phrasing for static shots
Runway’s prompting guidance recommends direct, simple prompts and warns that negative phrasing can produce unpredictable or opposite results. Instead of writing “no camera movement,” write “locked camera” or “static tripod shot.” Describe what should happen, not a list of things the model must avoid.
Image-to-video prompts should emphasize motion
Google Cloud’s video best-practice guidance recommends focusing image-to-video text on movement when the source image already defines composition, color, subject, and style. Specify whether the camera moves, the subject moves, the environment changes, or all three—but keep the order and scope unambiguous.
How do I control camera movement without losing the subject?
Name the shot type, camera position, direction, speed, and endpoint, then describe the subject’s action separately. A short physical description is usually easier for a model to follow than a cinematic paragraph full of simultaneous moves.

Do not combine a dolly, orbit, zoom, whip-pan, and crane in one short clip unless the product specifically supports structured keyframes. If you need a complex move, divide it into shots and use a continuation or first/last-frame workflow to connect them.
Does a fixed seed keep a character consistent?
No. A fixed seed is a variation-control aid, not a documented identity lock. Runway’s Gen-4 controls documentation says that reusing a fixed seed can produce generations with similar motion; it does not claim that the same seed preserves a person’s face, wardrobe, or scene geometry across every prompt.
Use a seed when you are making controlled variations of a shot—such as changing a small prop or testing two lighting descriptions—while keeping the reference and prompt structure stable. If the character itself changes, prioritize the reference image and simplify the action before assuming the seed failed. A seed may also behave differently between model versions, so record the model name and interface along with the value.
How should I plan shots so they cut together?
Treat every shot as a distinct unit with a defined start state and end state. Before generating, write down the last visible pose, screen direction, camera height, lighting direction, and important prop positions from the preceding clip.

Build a shot card
- Continuity anchor: character reference(s), wardrobe, age presentation, hair, and essential props.
- Start frame: where the subject stands, faces, and holds objects when the shot begins.
- Framing: close-up, medium, wide, over-the-shoulder, or another explicit composition.
- Camera: position, movement, direction, speed, and intended endpoint.
- Action beat: one primary movement with a clear beginning and end.
- End frame: the pose or composition that the next shot must inherit.
OpenAI’s archived Sora prompting guide similarly recommends storyboarding with framing, depth of field, action beats, lighting, and palette. Because that guide is archived and may be outdated, use its planning concepts only after checking current Sora access and documentation.

Generate, inspect, then expand
Review each clip for face and clothing changes, altered props, warped architecture, unintended cuts, camera-path errors, and mismatched screen direction. If one shot fails, regenerate that shot rather than adding more prompts to a broken sequence. Keeping clips separate also lets you choose the cleanest take for editing.

Compare documented controls, not a universal quality ranking. The following distinctions are based on official product descriptions and help pages; none supplies an independent cross-model continuity score.

An older Runway Gen-4 help page also listed 5- and 10-second durations, 24 frames per second, and credit rates. Because that page warns it covers an older model generation, those figures are historical implementation details rather than current, universal settings.

When available, explicit frame controls give the next shot a visual target instead of asking the model to infer continuity from prose. Google’s Veo 3.1 materials document first-frame and last-frame direction as well as video extension. These features can be more direct than generating an unrelated clip and trying to match it in an editor.
Availability is model- and endpoint-specific. A feature shown in a product page may not exist in the API tier, region, or model selected in your account. Google’s Gemini documentation records the October 22, 2026 retirement of Veo 3.1 Preview endpoints and points to Gemini Omni Flash or generally available models on the Enterprise Agent Platform. Check the current endpoint and model name immediately before writing a production workflow.
Gemini Omni documentation describes conversational editing and video extension. Use those controls to preserve an established moment, but still inspect the join: extension may alter a face, object, lighting direction, or camera trajectory even when the preceding frame is supplied.

What is a practical repeatable workflow?
- Define the continuity anchors. List the character’s face, hair, wardrobe, props, environment, and lighting that must persist.
- Prepare one to three references if supported. Use clear, naturally lit images and avoid contradictory angles or styling.
- Write a shot card. Set the framing, camera position and movement, single main action, focus, lighting, and start/end poses.
- Generate a short test clip. Do not expand the sequence until identity, motion, and geometry look acceptable.
- Inspect frame changes. Note exactly what drifted—face, clothing, prop, camera path, or background—and change only the relevant input.
- Reuse a seed for controlled variations when available. Keep the model and reference constant while testing small prompt changes.
- Continue with explicit frame or extension tools. Confirm that the feature exists for the current model and endpoint.
- Record production metadata. Save model/version, references, prompt, seed, aspect ratio, and output selection so a successful shot can be recreated.
This process improves control by isolating variables. It should not be presented as a guaranteed continuity method, because the official materials do not establish a numeric success rate across models.
How should I compare generators for a real project?
Ask whether the product accepts persistent references, how many images it allows, whether camera movement is expressed in text or structured controls, whether first/last frames and extensions are available, and whether those features apply to the current model and your region. Also separate a documented feature from a qualitative claim such as “consistent”: only a controlled evaluation on your own characters and shots can show how well a tool performs for your project.
Keep a small evaluation set with the same reference images, three or four camera moves, and a continuation test. Judge face, wardrobe, prop, geometry, motion adherence, and edit points separately. Without that controlled comparison, calling one generator the most consistent is an unsupported conclusion.

Can I make an AI character keep the exact same clothes in every shot?
You can improve wardrobe stability by showing the clothing clearly in a reference image and repeating one concise description, but exact preservation is not guaranteed. Fast movement, occlusion, reflective fabrics, and a change in camera angle are common opportunities for the model to redraw details.
Why does the same seed produce a different face after I change the prompt?
A seed controls a generation’s variation pattern within a particular model and setup; changing the prompt, reference, model version, or interface can change the result substantially. Treat the seed as one logged variable, not as a character identifier.

Separate clips are easier to inspect, regenerate, and connect with first/last-frame or extension tools. A single long generation can reduce editing work when it succeeds, but it also makes a late continuity failure harder to repair without losing earlier material.
Do camera-control labels mean the model will follow the move exactly?
No. Labels such as dolly, pan, or crane describe the intended motion, while the output still depends on the model, prompt, reference image, and shot complexity. Evaluate the actual path and endpoint in your selected model rather than assuming a control name is a guarantee.
