For a wearable you can buy and use now, choose smart glasses over the Humane Ai Pin. Current Meta glasses offer hands-free photos and video, calls, open-ear audio and AI features, while Humane discontinued the Ai Pin and shut down its service on February 28, 2025. That does not make every possible pin-shaped wearable obsolete; it does mean the Ai Pin is no longer a practical current purchase.
AI glasses and AI pins solve the problem differently
AI smart glasses put microphones, speakers and, on camera models, a camera in the familiar position of eyewear. You interact through voice and touch, hear audio through open-ear speakers, and can capture what is in front of you without taking out a phone. Some models add an in-lens display. That makes glasses most compelling when the task is tied to what you are seeing or doing: taking a quick photo, recording a clip, making a call, hearing a response or getting visual AI assistance.

An AI pin clips to clothing rather than sitting on your face. Humane’s Ai Pin was designed as a camera-equipped assistant, using voice and projected or phone-mediated interaction. Like glasses, a pin can be worn hands-free; unlike glasses, it does not naturally share your line of sight. Its services also depended on Humane’s servers, which made continued operation dependent on the company maintaining the service.
These are not simply two shapes for the same product. Glasses can combine eyewear, audio and capture in a single object, but their fit and appearance matter. A pin avoids the need to wear glasses, but may require a separate surface or projection for interaction. For either form, practical value depends on more than the AI: consider the ordinary tasks it supports, its battery routine, privacy implications, phone and cloud requirements, and the vendor’s support plans.

Availability changes the comparison
Meta and Ray-Ban list multiple smart-glasses models, including Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta and Meta Ray-Ban Display. Humane’s Ai Pin is discontinued. Humane wound down the consumer product and sold major assets to HP; that transaction did not keep the consumer service running.
At 12:00 p.m. Pacific time on February 28, 2025, Ai Pins stopped connecting to Humane’s servers. Calling, messaging, AI queries and responses, and cloud access ended. Some limited offline functions, such as checking battery level, could remain, but that is not a substitute for the product’s core connected services. Owners were told to download photos, videos and notes before the shutdown because customer data was scheduled for deletion.

A powered-on device is not the same as a supported service. The shutdown is also a useful warning for any cloud-dependent wearable: find out what still works if the company closes, how to export your data, and whether the seller commits to a minimum support period.

Ray-Ban’s listing also describes an audio-only Ray-Ban Meta option. It removes the camera and is listed for up to 12 hours of use, with up to 48 additional hours from its case. This is the clearest fit in the listed range for someone who wants wearable audio and AI features but does not want a camera on their face. Confirm the specific model and availability in your market.

Ray-Ban’s listed camera models include a 12 MP ultra-wide camera and 3K Ultra HD video, along with open-ear speakers, a six-microphone array, Meta AI, reminders, live translation and a charging case. These capabilities are not identical across every frame: check the exact model rather than assuming every item in the lineup has a camera, display or the same battery claim.

Choose camera glasses for quick hands-free capture
If you often want a photo or short video while both hands are occupied, glasses put the camera near your point of view and avoid the extra step of taking out a phone. They may suit casual documentation, social sharing or moments when it is inconvenient to handle a device. They are not automatically the right tool for every recording: the visible camera and recording indicator can affect whether people around you are comfortable, and some settings call for putting the wearable away and asking permission.
Choose audio-first glasses if you want calls without a camera
Open-ear speakers let you hear audio without covering your ears, while microphones support calls and voice interaction. The audio-only option trades away hands-free camera capture for a camera-free design and a longer stated battery life than the camera-equipped Gen 3 claim. Compare those functions against your actual routine: if taking photos or video matters, an audio-only model cannot replace that capability.
Consider a display model when visual information matters
Meta Ray-Ban Display adds a full-color display in the lens and wrist control through the Meta Neural Band. It is the lineup’s more advanced interaction option, not simply a camera model with different styling. The display’s 600 × 600-pixel resolution, 12 MP camera and 3× zoom are manufacturer-listed specifications. Its stated use time is lower than the camera-equipped Gen 3 figure, so weigh the display and control method against the charging routine you are willing to accept.
Consider fit and activity before choosing a frame
Eyewear has to fit your face and suit the situation in which you will wear it. A model aimed at everyday use may be a better match for routine calls and social capture; Meta positions Oakley models toward athletes. That positioning does not establish that a particular frame will fit your sport, prescription or face, so try it on and check the product’s requirements and lens options before buying.

A pin’s advantage is that it does not require eyewear fit or prescription compatibility. But that advantage only matters if a supported pin is actually available and its interaction method works for you. Humane’s discontinued device cannot now provide the connected assistant experience it was sold to deliver.
Prescription lenses, phone needs and cloud dependence
Prescription compatibility is model-specific
Ray-Ban lists a Gen 2 Optics model from $499, indicating an optical-focused option in its range. That does not establish compatibility with every prescription, lens treatment or regional configuration. Before ordering, confirm the maximum supported prescription and lens choices with the seller or an optical professional, and make sure the final fitted combination is compatible with the electronics and frame.
Confirm phone and account requirements before purchase
The specifications summarized here do not establish a single phone, operating-system or account requirement that applies to every model and market. Check the setup requirements for the exact glasses before buying, especially if you use an older phone or do not want to maintain an account or companion app. Do not assume the glasses can perform every AI or cloud feature independently of a phone or internet connection.
Ask what survives a service shutdown
Glasses with AI features can depend on vendor software and connected services; the extent of offline functionality is specific to the product and is not established by the listed hardware specifications. Before purchase, look for a clear support commitment, data export options and an explanation of what remains usable if the companion app or cloud service ends. Humane’s shutdown shows why this is a real ownership issue rather than a theoretical one.

A camera wearable can make capturing a moment easier, but that convenience changes the consent question. With glasses, the camera is on the wearer’s face; with a pin, it is attached to clothing. Either can record people nearby, and a small indicator does not replace clear communication where recording would be intrusive or prohibited.

- Choose an audio-only model if you want the listed glasses experience without an on-device camera.

These considerations are not unique to AI wearables, but hands-free capture can make recording less obvious to the wearer and to others. If you would feel uncomfortable explaining when the camera is active, a camera-equipped model may be a poor match even if its features appeal.
Price, battery and support: compare the real ownership cost
The listed glasses begin at $379 and rise to $799 for Meta Ray-Ban Display. Those are manufacturer-listed starting prices, not a guarantee of the final cost for a particular frame, lens, market or configuration. Humane’s Ai Pin is not a current buying option. At launch, contemporary reporting described it at roughly $699 plus a required $24 monthly service plan; those are historical figures, not a live offer or a sensible basis for a current purchase.
Battery comparisons also need care. The figures above are manufacturer “up to” claims and apply to particular models; actual endurance depends on the way a device is used. A camera, calls, audio playback and connected AI functions can all make a charging routine more consequential. A charging case adds reserve capacity but also becomes another item to carry and recharge.
An independent Tom’s Hardware review dated February 22, 2025, described Ray-Ban Meta as a strong smart wearable, praising hands-free music, calls and photo/video controls and its speakers while calling battery life “so-so.” That review predates the current listed Gen 3 and Display specifications; use it as evidence about the earlier product experience, not as a direct test of every current model.

- Want hands-free photos, video, calls and audio: start with a current camera-equipped Ray-Ban Meta or another current Meta AI-glasses model, then choose by fit, listed features and price.
- Want audio and AI without a camera: compare the audio-only Ray-Ban Meta option, whose manufacturer-listed battery claim is up to 12 hours plus up to 48 case hours.
- Want an in-lens display and wrist interaction: examine Meta Ray-Ban Display, taking its $799 starting price and listed battery claims into account.
- Want sports-oriented eyewear: compare Oakley Meta HSTN and Vanguard by fit and exact specifications; the lineup positioning alone is not a guarantee of suitability for a particular activity.
- Want a Humane Ai Pin: do not buy it as a working connected AI wearable. Humane’s service has ended, and its core connected functions no longer operate.
