An AI security gateway should enforce policy around the model and agent runtime—not rely on the model’s prompt to keep itself safe. When comparing gateways, look for controls at the input, output, tool, identity, and network boundaries: untrusted-content screening, permission-checked tool calls, least-privilege access, data-loss prevention, resource limits, monitoring, and repeatable abuse testing.
The key buying test is whether a control is enforced outside the model’s own instructions. A polished dashboard or a strict system prompt is not proof that an agent cannot call an unauthorized tool, expose sensitive data, or run up costs through repeated actions.

Start with the ways an AI assistant or agent can turn an instruction or a tool connection into an unauthorized action. OWASP’s agent-security guidance identifies prompt injection, tool abuse, privilege escalation, data exfiltration, and memory poisoning as risks to address. These are related, but they are not the same problem: screening an incoming prompt does not authorize a tool call, and blocking one suspicious tool call does not protect sensitive information already placed in the model’s context.
Use the risks as a coverage checklist rather than as a vendor’s marketing labels. Ask which boundary enforces each control and what happens when the gateway cannot make a decision.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- Prompt injection: Untrusted content, such as a web page or email, tries to override the task or redirect the agent.
- Tool abuse: An agent attempts an action outside the caller’s permissions, or supplies unsafe parameters to an otherwise permitted tool.
- Privilege escalation: The agent or a connected component gains access beyond what the task and identity require.
- Data exfiltration: Sensitive information is placed in a prompt, response, tool call, citation, or other outbound channel where it should not go.
- Memory poisoning: Malicious or misleading content becomes part of information the agent later treats as trusted context.
- Resource abuse: Repeated retries, long tool chains, recursion, or excessive token use create cost or operational risk.
OWASP AI Exchange describes one useful way to reason about leakage: an attacker controls data entering a session, the model can access sensitive information, and the model or connected agent can send it out. A gateway evaluation should therefore consider the whole path—what enters, what can be accessed, and what can leave—not only whether a prompt contains a suspicious phrase.
Which gateway controls matter most?
Prioritize controls that enforce authorization and limit consequences, then add screening and monitoring around them. A content filter can help identify suspicious material, but it cannot substitute for permissions enforced by the tool or the infrastructure that executes the action.

Separate trusted instructions from untrusted content
Retrieved documents, web pages, emails, API responses, and tool results should be treated as untrusted input, even when they are relevant to the user’s task. The gateway should preserve the distinction between trusted instructions and retrieved content, inspect untrusted material, and support semantic or model-based screening alongside deterministic rules.
Do not accept keyword blocking as the security boundary. An attacker can rephrase or encode an instruction, so a filter that looks only for known phrases can miss an attempt. Ask the vendor to demonstrate how screening relates to downstream policy: for example, whether suspicious content can be flagged while the separate tool-authorization control still prevents an unauthorized action.
Authorize every tool call in context
Require the gateway or execution layer to check each proposed tool call against the caller’s permissions and session context. It should validate the tool identity and its parameters against an expected schema, and the execution code should validate parameters too. A tool being available to an agent does not mean every action or every argument should be allowed.

Prefer deny-by-default access: unknown tools should not run, and an action should not proceed when required approval is missing. OWASP’s AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet puts this directly: “Fail closed for unknown tools or missing approval requirements.” Where possible, limit a tool to read-only scope. Require explicit human approval for irreversible or high-impact actions rather than treating a model-generated statement of intent as authorization.
Bind access to identity and least privilege
Actions should be attributable to an auditable user or agent identity, and each identity should receive only the data and tools needed for the task. Sessions should not transfer authority implicitly between agents or users. The infrastructure enforcing access should apply least privilege; relying on the model to voluntarily respect a boundary leaves the boundary inside the system being controlled.
Ask how the gateway handles identity in a multi-step task: whose authority is used for a tool call, how the session context is checked, and whether one agent can pass credentials or permissions to another. The purchase goal is not simply to record an identity label, but to make access decisions using that identity and preserve a traceable link between the request and the resulting action.
Control sensitive data and outbound paths
Data-loss prevention should cover more than the final answer shown to a user. Ask whether the gateway can detect secrets or sensitive data in prompts, retrieved context, outputs, citations, tool calls, and logs. Look for redaction, retention controls, and egress restrictions that match the organization’s handling requirements.
Evaluate the controls against the full leakage path: sensitive data may be available to the model before it appears in an answer, or it may be sent through a tool call instead of displayed in chat. A policy that scans only the final response can miss those routes. Logging also needs its own policy: retain enough security-relevant information to investigate decisions without needlessly storing the secrets the gateway is meant to protect.

Limit abuse and resource consumption
Require controls for per-user and per-IP rate limits, token and cost budgets, retry limits, tool-chain depth, recursion, and anomaly alerts. These controls address both malicious behavior and runaway workflows; they should be enforceable rather than merely displayed as recommendations.
Ask what happens at the limit. A useful policy should have a defined outcome—such as stopping a chain or raising an alert—rather than allowing a model to retry indefinitely. Where the product supports different limits by user, task, or tool, verify that those scopes map to the identities and actions your organization actually uses.
Make decisions observable and recoverable
Security-relevant logs should show the policy decision, relevant identity and session context, and the action that was allowed, denied, or sent for approval. Ask whether alerts can identify suspicious patterns and whether operators have quarantine, rollback, or incident-response hooks. A log that captures only model text may not reveal which control permitted an action; a log that copies every prompt and response may retain unnecessary sensitive data.
Clarify which actions can be reversed and which cannot. For high-impact actions, combine preventive controls with explicit approval and a response plan; monitoring after the fact is not a replacement for blocking unauthorized execution.
Track models, tools, and changes
Ask for an inventory of models, plugins, tools, data sources, and relevant dependencies. Change control should include version pinning, review of updates, component isolation, and integrity checks for models or datasets using hashes or signatures. Without a reliable inventory, it is difficult to know which component or version a policy actually covers.

Include changes to tools and data sources in the review, not only model updates. A tool’s permissions or a source’s content can alter the risk of an agent workflow even when the model is unchanged.
How do you compare gateway products?
Compare the enforcement point and the evidence for each control, not the number of features in a product page. Products may operate as a proxy, gateway, SDK, sidecar, or control plane; the label alone does not establish which requests or actions they can actually govern.
- Enforcement point: Identify where policy runs and which model, agent, tool, and network paths pass through it. Ask what traffic or actions can bypass the control.
- Policy coverage: Check input and output screening, action authorization, identity checks, parameter validation, and egress policy separately.
- Identity integration: Verify how user and agent identities, permissions, and session context reach policy decisions.
- Tool and network isolation: Determine whether the design supports deny-by-default tool access, least privilege, and restricted outbound paths.
- Data-loss controls: Check detection, redaction, retention, and egress controls across prompts, context, tool calls, responses, and logs.
- Observability and response: Request examples of security-relevant decision records, alerting, quarantine, rollback, and incident-response hooks.
- Testing workflow: Look for repeatable abuse-case tests and a way to confirm that a policy change has not weakened enforcement.
- Deployment and operations: Compare deployment options, latency and throughput evidence for your workload, change control, and total operating cost.
For each claimed control, ask the vendor to show where it executes and what happens if the gateway, identity context, approval service, or policy decision is unavailable. The central distinction is whether an authorization check runs outside the model prompt. A system prompt can guide behavior; it does not provide an independent authorization boundary.
What should a proof of concept test?
Use repeatable abuse cases that exercise the complete workflow, including the connected tools and identity context. Evaluation harnesses can help organize tests, but the U.S. Department of Energy warns that they do not replace authorization or human review.
- Prompt override: Place an instruction in retrieved or supplied content that conflicts with the trusted task. Check that the content is treated as untrusted and does not grant new authority.
- Tool misuse: Attempt a tool the session should not have, and attempt a permitted tool with parameters outside its intended scope. Verify denial at the authorization or execution boundary.
- Privilege escalation: Test whether an agent can obtain or reuse another identity’s access, or exceed the permissions assigned to its task.
- Memory poisoning: Introduce misleading or malicious content into information the agent may later retrieve. Check whether it is kept distinct from trusted instructions and whether resulting actions remain authorized.
- Data exfiltration: Put a test secret in a controlled source and attempt to move it through a response, citation, tool call, or other outbound path. Verify detection and the configured response without exposing real secrets.
- Recursive tool abuse: Exercise repeated retries, chained calls, or recursion. Confirm that the relevant limits stop or constrain the workflow and that operators can see the event.
For every case, record the setup, expected policy decision, observed decision, identity and session used, and evidence available to an operator. Include both allowed and denied actions: a gateway that blocks everything may appear safe while failing its actual workflow. Repeat the cases when policies, models, tools, or data sources change, and require approval for high-impact actions even when a test harness reports a pass.

How should you make the buying decision?
Use a short evidence-led process that connects each risk to an enforceable control, a test, and an accountable owner. Do not select a product solely because it describes itself as an AI firewall or guardrail.
- Map the workflow: List the models, agents, users, data sources, tools, and outbound destinations in scope. Mark which actions can change data or have other high impact.
- Set the policy: Define who may use each tool, which parameters and data are allowed, what requires approval, and which resource limits apply.
- Trace enforcement: For every policy, identify the component that makes and enforces the decision. Reject a design whose only safeguard is a prompt instruction.
- Run the abuse cases: Use the same test cases for each candidate and examine the actual deny, approval, alert, and logging behavior.
- Review operation and change: Check identity integration, deployment fit, latency and throughput evidence, version control, rollback, and the work needed to maintain policies.
- Compare total operating cost: Include the operational effort to manage identities, policies, tests, logs, and incidents—not only the purchase price.
Choose the candidate that can demonstrate the required boundaries in your workflow and preserve evidence of its decisions. A gateway is one layer of an agent-security design: least privilege, human review for high-risk actions, and infrastructure-enforced permissions remain important even when a product offers broad screening and evaluation features.

Can an AI security gateway guarantee that an agent will never be abused?
No gateway should be treated as a guarantee. Its value depends on which model, tool, identity, and network paths it actually governs, and on how its policies are configured and tested.
Who should own AI gateway policy decisions?
Ownership should include the people accountable for the data and actions being protected, as well as the teams operating the gateway and connected tools. Keep policy approval and operational evidence clear enough that a denied or approved action can be reviewed after an incident.
Should a gateway inspect every retrieved document?
Retrieved documents and tool results are untrusted content, so the gateway should have a way to inspect them rather than assuming they are safe because they came from an approved source. Inspection should complement—not replace—permission checks on the actions the agent can take.
What is a useful first step if an agent workflow is already deployed?
Inventory its identities, data sources, tools, and outbound paths, then identify actions that can cause irreversible or high-impact effects. Use that map to establish least-privilege access and approval requirements before expanding the workflow.
