Traditional scanners and AI security agents find different classes of evidence. Static analysis (SAST) inspects source before execution, dynamic analysis (DAST) attacks a running application, and dependency scanners match package data against published vulnerabilities. Those checks are comparatively repeatable and efficient for known patterns. An AI-assisted security agent can add context-aware exploration: it may plan multi-step actions, follow application state, and test business-logic or chained attack paths that a fixed rule set is unlikely to model.
The practical answer is not to choose one. Keep SAST, DAST, and dependency checks as baseline controls, then use an agent where its scope, credentials, supported tests, and evidence quality fit your application. Treat agent findings as leads that require review, and retain authorized human penetration testing when an independent assessment or a formal requirement calls for it.

What do traditional vulnerability scanners actually inspect?
“Traditional scanner” describes several observation points rather than one product category. The three most important are SAST for source code, DAST for a running application, and dependency scanning for third-party packages. Each can be highly useful, but none sees the entire system.
Static application security testing (SAST)
SAST analyzes source code before compilation or execution. Microsoft’s Security Development Lifecycle guidance describes it as a way to find known coding issues and check adherence to coding standards. Because the tool works from source, it can run in developer workflows and build automation, often before an application is deployed.

SAST is strongest when a defect has a recognizable code pattern: an unsafe API call, a data flow from an untrusted input to a sensitive sink, or a coding-policy violation. It can inspect code paths that are difficult to exercise in a live environment and can point developers to the file and line that need attention.
Its observation point is also its boundary. SAST does not see the exact runtime configuration, deployed routing, live authorization state, or interactions among services unless those facts are represented in the analyzed code and configuration. A clean SAST result therefore means that the analyzed rules did not identify a problem in the supplied code; it does not prove that the deployed application has no exploitable behavior.
Dynamic application security testing (DAST)
DAST probes an executing, integrated program. It sends requests and observes responses, errors, state changes, and access behavior, using attacks or tools that approximate an external attacker. This makes DAST useful for issues that only appear when components work together: routing mistakes, server behavior, runtime configuration, and user-privilege handling.
DAST can reveal a vulnerability even when the source code looks acceptable, because the test is aimed at the behavior exposed by the deployed application. Conversely, an endpoint that requires authentication, a particular workflow, or a specific role may remain untested if the scan is not given suitable credentials and a way to reach that state.
DAST coverage depends on the URL scope, crawl or request model, authentication setup, and exclusions. A scan that covers only a public landing page cannot make claims about an administrator workflow or an internal API. Results still need triage and verification; an observed response is evidence to investigate, not automatic proof of impact.
Dependency and manifest scanning
Dependency scanning is a separate job from application-logic testing. It reads package manifests, lockfiles, or dependency inventories and compares component versions with published vulnerability information. The result can identify a known vulnerable library even when no currently reachable exploit path has been demonstrated in your application.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallAWS’s Security Agent best-practices guidance explicitly says that its agent does not perform traditional dependency or manifest scanning and points users to a dedicated service such as Amazon Inspector for published vulnerabilities in third-party dependencies. That distinction matters: an AI agent that explores requests and workflows should not be assumed to replace the inventory and version-matching control in your software pipeline.
What can an AI-assisted security agent catch that a fixed scanner may miss?
An AI-assisted agent is a testing approach, not a single standardized capability. AWS describes its Security Agent as using application context and multi-step scenarios to test web applications and APIs. Depending on the implementation and configuration, an agent may combine elements of SAST, DAST, and penetration testing, then choose its next action from the result of the previous one.

Context-aware exploration
Instead of applying only independent payloads to discovered inputs, an agent can use documentation, architecture information, observed responses, and available credentials to form a model of the application. It may notice that one request creates an object, another changes its owner, and a third exposes it. That sequence is the kind of application-specific relationship that a one-request rule often cannot express.
This does not mean every product understands every business process. The quality of the exploration is bounded by the context supplied, the pages and APIs in scope, the roles available to it, and the implementation’s planning and verification logic. “Agentic” describes the method; it is not a guarantee of broad or deep coverage.

AWS documentation lists the following supported risk categories for that service:
- Code injection and command injection
- Cross-site scripting (XSS)
- Insecure direct object references (IDOR)
- JSON Web Token (JWT) weaknesses
- Path traversal
- Privilege escalation
- Server-side request forgery (SSRF)
- Server-side template injection (SSTI)
- SQL injection
- XML external entity (XXE) issues
The list is a product-specific coverage statement, not an industry-wide definition of what all AI security agents can find. Actual results depend on application scope, configuration, authentication, reachable functionality, and the test setup.
Multi-step and business-logic paths
OWASP distinguishes authorized penetration testing from automated known-pattern checks by emphasizing business-logic flaws and chained attacks. An agent that can retain state and plan several requests may be useful for looking for those relationships: for example, whether a low-privilege user can combine an allowed action with an object-reference change to reach a higher-impact result.
Such a path is still a hypothesis until the evidence shows what the agent sent, what the application returned, and how the result was verified. A plausible narrative without a reproducible request sequence should be treated as an investigation lead rather than a confirmed vulnerability.

How do the two approaches differ in practice?
The table summarizes the central difference: scanners are organized around a defined observation point and repeatable rules, while an agent can use context to choose and chain actions. Neither column should be read as a promise that every tool has every capability listed.
| Dimension | Traditional scanners | AI-assisted security agents |
|---|---|---|
| What they inspect | SAST inspects code; DAST tests a running application; dependency tools inspect package manifests or dependency data. | Depending on the product, may combine source, documentation, architecture context, and a running web application or API. |
| Strong use | Repeatable checks for known code patterns, coding issues, runtime problems, and known dependency vulnerabilities. | Context-aware exploration of application behavior, business logic, and potential multi-step exploit paths. |
| Validation | Depends on the tool and configuration; findings require triage and verification. | AWS describes attempted exploitation and reproducible attack paths, while warning that runs are non-deterministic. |
| Repeatability | Rule-based checks are generally useful for consistent recurring coverage, although scanners do not all behave identically. | AWS explicitly describes its AI-driven test runs as non-deterministic. |
| Boundaries | Cannot establish all business context or prove that every reachable exploit path was tested. | Bounded by scope, context, credentials, supported checks, and implementation; does not replace dependency scanning or professional testing. |
Which vulnerabilities are better suited to each method?
Use the issue’s evidence requirements to select the first test, then add a second method when the risk justifies it. The following patterns are practical tendencies, not exclusive ownership of a vulnerability class.

Known coding patterns
SAST is usually the fastest first check for unsafe data flows, injection-prone calls, and coding-policy violations visible in source. It can run on a pull request or build, giving developers feedback before deployment. A runtime test remains valuable because the deployed configuration and integration behavior may change the effective risk.
Exposed runtime behavior
DAST is the natural fit for checking what an unauthenticated or authenticated client can actually reach. It can exercise headers, responses, session behavior, and privilege boundaries in the running application. The scan must be given an accurate scope and the roles needed to reach sensitive paths.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThird-party component exposure
Dependency scanners are designed for package identity and version evidence. They can flag a published vulnerability even when a dynamic test does not trigger it. Conversely, a package finding does not by itself show that your deployment is exploitable; application reachability and configuration still matter.
Cross-request logic and chained abuse
An agent or authorized human tester may be better positioned to follow a workflow across several requests, maintain state, and test whether one user action changes the security assumptions of another. Fixed scanners can catch individual symptoms, but a complete business-logic chain often depends on understanding the intended process.
Why should an AI agent complement, rather than replace, scanners?
First, the methods have different inputs. A source scanner cannot substitute for a manifest inventory, and a dependency inventory cannot observe a live authorization failure. Removing one to fund another creates a blind spot rather than a simpler control set.
Second, agent runs may not be repeatable. AWS states: “Because AWS Security Agent is powered by AI agents, runs are non-deterministic: testing the same unchanged application twice can surface different findings.” A different result on a later run is not automatically a regression or a fix. Compare the scope, credentials, generated actions, and evidence before drawing that conclusion.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Third, an agent’s apparent reasoning does not establish independent assurance. AWS says its Security Agent does not replace a professional penetration-testing service. Where a customer, regulator, contract, or internal policy requires an independent report, an automated run may be useful supporting evidence but not the required assessment.
How do you build a layered application-security workflow?
A layered workflow keeps inexpensive, repeatable checks close to code and reserves context-heavy testing for places where it can add information.

- Inventory code and dependencies. Run SAST on supported source and scan manifests or lockfiles with a dedicated dependency tool. Record the commit, dependency snapshot, and rule or advisory data used for each result.
- Scan the deployed application. Use DAST against an environment that matches the intended deployment as closely as practical. Define the URL and API scope, configure test accounts for each relevant role, and exclude destructive actions.
- Prepare context for agent testing. Supply architecture or API documentation, the intended test boundaries, role-specific credentials, and explicit success criteria. Remove secrets and production data that the test does not need.
- Run focused scenarios. Ask the agent to examine workflows where state, ownership, privilege, or multi-step transitions matter. Keep the target within the written scope and monitor requests while the run is active.
- Review every material finding. Inspect the agent’s reasoning, payloads, response evidence, and verification steps. Reproduce the behavior with a controlled request or a human tester before classifying it as confirmed.
- Retest after remediation. Repeat the relevant scanner and scenario tests, noting that an agent may choose different paths on each run. Compare evidence rather than relying only on finding counts.
- Escalate for independent assessment. Use an authorized professional penetration test when the risk, customer assurance, or formal requirement calls for human-led validation and an independent report.
What setup and safety controls do agent runs require?
Written authorization and scope
OWASP defines penetration testing as an authorized simulated attack and emphasizes written scope, rules of engagement, and authorization. Apply the same discipline to an AI-driven test: identify the exact hosts, APIs, accounts, time window, prohibited actions, and contact for stopping the run. Do not infer authorization from network reachability.
Role-correct credentials
A credential that can view a page is not equivalent to one that can create, approve, or administer an object. AWS setup guidance recommends correct role-specific credentials. Label each account’s intended privilege, limit its permissions to the test, and avoid sharing a production superuser when a lower-privilege account can answer the question.
Isolation and containment
For applications that invoke tools, delegate to other agents, or retain memory, AWS’s Well-Architected Agentic AI Lens recommends isolated test environments, scoped credentials, logged activity, and controls that contain impact. Use synthetic or disposable data where possible, rate-limit risky actions, and define a stop condition before the first request.
Destructive-action exclusions
Exclude deletion, irreversible state changes, high-volume messaging, financial transactions, and other actions that could harm users or systems unless the written test plan specifically authorizes a safe simulation. A successful exploit demonstration should prove the security condition without causing unnecessary damage.
How should you verify and triage an agent finding?
Start by separating a claim from its evidence. The claim might say that a low-privilege account can access another user’s object. Evidence should identify the account, endpoint, sequence, parameters, responses, and the control that was bypassed.
- Check scope: Was every host, API, and account in the result authorized and intended?
- Check reachability: Can a reviewer repeat the sequence from a clean session with the same role?
- Check impact: Did the response expose, alter, or execute something security-relevant, or merely return an error message?
- Check prerequisites: Does the path require a special token, timing condition, feature flag, or data state that is absent in normal use?
- Check remediation: Is the proposed fix addressing the authorization, input handling, or state transition rather than only hiding the observed response?
Because agent runs can vary, retain the run identifier, scope, model or service version when available, prompts or scenario definitions, generated requests, and verification output. This record lets engineers distinguish a changed application from a changed exploration path.
What changes when the target application contains AI agents?
An application that itself uses AI agents introduces additional surfaces beyond ordinary web requests. AWS’s Agentic AI Lens calls out tool invocation, multi-agent delegation, memory handling, and prompt-injection chains as assessment considerations.
These concerns are about the target system’s design, not a universal feature of every security-testing agent. A conventional web test may never reach a tool call or inspect memory persistence unless the workflow exposes it. Add scenarios that trace untrusted instructions into tool selection, authorization checks, delegated tasks, and stored context, and keep those tests in an isolated environment with detailed logs.
Best Value
When is a professional penetration test still necessary?
Use a professional penetration test when you need independent judgment, broad business-context analysis, or a report accepted by a customer, contract, or assurance process. OWASP’s distinction is important: automated checks are efficient at known patterns, while penetration testing is an authorized simulated attack that can investigate business logic and chained behavior.
Google supplier-testing guidance is one context-specific example in which automated scanning is not considered an adequate replacement for the required penetration-test report. That requirement should not be generalized to every organization or law, but it illustrates why a tool result and an independent assessment answer different governance questions.
How should a security team decide where to add an AI agent?
Add an agent where the expected value comes from context and sequence rather than from another copy of a known-pattern check. High-value candidates include complex authorization workflows, APIs with many state transitions, and applications whose documentation can give the tester meaningful business context.
Keep traditional scanners where they provide inexpensive recurring coverage: every relevant code change for SAST, every build or release for dependency inventories, and scheduled or release-gated DAST for the deployed surface. Define success in terms of reviewed and reproducible risk, not the number of findings or the novelty of the tool.
Finally, document what the agent did not test: excluded URLs, unavailable roles, unsupported categories, untested integrations, and actions prohibited for safety. A transparent boundary is more useful than a broad claim that an application is “AI scanned” or “secure.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI security agent find vulnerable open-source packages?
Not necessarily. Package and manifest scanning is a distinct control, and AWS says its Security Agent does not perform traditional dependency scanning. Keep a dedicated dependency inventory and advisory-matching process even if an agent tests the application that uses those packages.
Does a different result on a second agent run prove the first result was wrong?
No. AWS describes AI-driven runs as non-deterministic, so the exploration path can change against an unchanged application. Compare the generated requests, prerequisites, and reproduction evidence before deciding whether a finding is a false positive, a missed path, or a real change.
Can I run an AI security agent against production?
Only under explicit authorization and a safety plan that permits the activity. Isolated environments, least-privilege credentials, logging, rate limits, and exclusions for destructive actions are safer defaults; production testing can affect real data and users.
What evidence should an auditor receive from an agent test?
Provide the written scope and authorization, test dates, target and account list, scenario definitions, request and response evidence, reviewer disposition, and remediation or retest records. If an independent penetration-test report is required, preserve that separate deliverable rather than presenting an automated run as a substitute.
