Static application security testing (SAST) reads source, bytecode, or intermediate representations without running the application. An AI security agent is a broader, implementation-dependent tester that may reason over code and context, call tools, send requests, and try to validate vulnerabilities in a live workflow. SAST is strongest for an early, repeatable inventory of risky code patterns and data flows. Agentic testing is most useful when the risk depends on runtime state, business logic, multi-step behavior, permissions, or an application’s use of large language models (LLMs). Neither label guarantees a fixed feature set, and neither produces a complete security assessment alone. Use SAST as a deterministic baseline, add dynamic and agentic tests for behavior, and have people review important findings and fixes.
What is the difference between SAST and an AI security agent?
SAST examines an application’s implementation without executing it. It can inspect source code, compiled code, or an intermediate representation early in the development lifecycle. Rules, pattern matching, models, and data-flow analysis identify code paths that appear dangerous. The result is a list of potential weaknesses, not automatic proof that an attacker can exploit each one.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute“SAST does not replace manual review or other security testing techniques,” the OWASP Developer Guide states. That distinction matters because static analysis can identify a suspicious path that is unreachable in production, while missing a flaw created by configuration, deployment, runtime state, or a sequence of valid actions.
AI security agent is not a standardized product category. Depending on its design, an agent may read code, infer application architecture, invoke a browser or API client, authenticate with supplied identities, generate test cases, and attempt targeted exploitation. AWS describes its Security Agent as combining SAST, dynamic application security testing (DAST), and penetration-testing methods. That is a vendor description of one implementation, not a capability that every agent supplies.

The practical distinction is therefore evidence: SAST reasons from program artifacts; an agent can add observations from executed behavior and application context. A mature program uses both, plus human code review and targeted manual testing.
What vulnerabilities can SAST catch?
SAST can flag a broad set of code-level patterns when the language, framework, and analysis rules support them. Typical findings include:
- Injection paths, such as data flowing from an untrusted source into a database or command interpreter.
- Unsafe output handling that can create cross-site scripting or other context-encoding failures.
- Insecure deserialization and dangerous object construction.
- Path traversal caused by unchecked file names or archive paths.
- Hard-coded secrets or credentials committed to source.
- Weak or obsolete cryptographic choices and unsafe key handling.
- Data-flow paths in which tainted input reaches a sensitive sink across functions or files.
The exact list depends on the scanner’s rules, language support, framework models, and configuration. A tool that understands a common web framework may trace sanitization and authorization correctly; the same tool may have limited visibility into a custom framework, generated code, reflection, macros, or a dynamically configured route.
Why a SAST finding is only a potential vulnerability
Static analysis reports an inference. It may not know whether a route is reachable, whether a value is constrained before use, or whether a compensating control exists outside the analyzed repository. False positives require triage, while false negatives occur when a flow is too complex for the analyzer, hidden in generated code, or expressed through unsupported framework behavior. Reviewers should inspect the trace, confirm reachability and attacker control, and test the proposed fix.
What SAST can see that runtime scans often cannot
Because it does not need a running environment, SAST can inspect dead or rarely exercised branches, error handlers, scheduled jobs, and code paths that normal test traffic never reaches. It can run on a pull request before deployment and produce repeatable results for every change. That early feedback is its principal operational advantage.

What can an AI security agent catch that SAST usually cannot?
An agent can add value when the security property depends on what the deployed application actually does. With suitable access and tooling, it can exercise routes, maintain state between requests, follow a workflow, and test how components interact. That makes it useful for:
- Runtime-dependent behavior: authorization decisions, session handling, tenant isolation, and configuration-dependent exposure.
- Business-logic flaws: abusing a sequence such as creating, approving, and redeeming an order; bypassing limits by reordering valid operations; or using one account’s workflow state in another account.
- Multi-step exploit chains: combining a low-impact information leak with a privilege change or an unsafe endpoint.
- Input and output behavior: observing how a deployed service parses malformed data, handles redirects, exposes errors, or applies security headers.
- Permission and tool interactions: checking whether an agent, plug-in, retrieval system, or API identity can perform actions beyond its intended scope.
These benefits require an environment, credentials, reachable interfaces, and a safe test plan. An agent with no authenticated identity cannot assess an authenticated workflow; one that cannot reach an internal service cannot establish whether a private route is exposed.
AI- and LLM-specific risks
For applications that include an LLM, agentic testing can probe behavior that ordinary code rules do not model well:
- Prompt injection: instructions in user input or retrieved content that steer the model away from its intended task.
- Sensitive information disclosure: eliciting secrets, private records, system prompts, or data from another user or retrieval scope.
- Unsafe output handling: model text being inserted into HTML, SQL, shell commands, or downstream tools without a suitable trust boundary.
- Excessive agency: an assistant taking consequential actions when it should only suggest them, or acting without a meaningful confirmation step.
- Retrieval and tool-permission failures: a model retrieving documents it should not see, calling a tool with an over-broad identity, or chaining tools in an unintended way.
These tests do not become automatic merely because a product uses an “AI agent” label. The agent must be configured to reach the model, retrieval layer, tools, and identities involved, and its test prompts must be appropriate for the application.

| Dimension | SAST | AI security agent |
|---|---|---|
| Evidence source | Source, bytecode, or intermediate representation; no application execution | Potentially code plus executed requests, responses, state, logs, and tool interactions |
| Typical issue focus | Unsafe patterns, tainted data flows, secrets, cryptography, and coding defects | Runtime behavior, business logic, exploit chains, authorization context, and LLM/tool risks |
| Output strength | Usually a potential finding that needs confirmation | May provide a reproducible behavior or attempted exploit, but still needs review and careful reproduction |
| Coverage dependency | Language, framework, generated-code, reflection, and configuration support | Reachable routes, credentials, environment fidelity, model and tool access, and agent configuration |
| Timing | Suitable for every commit or pull request | Often scheduled, pre-release, or run after material changes because active tests require an environment |
| Repeatability | Highly repeatable when code and rules are fixed | Can vary with model behavior, prompts, state, timing, and changing external systems |
| Operational risk | Generally low because the application is not executed | Requests, credentials, tool calls, data exposure, and destructive actions must be constrained |
A successful request is not proof that an application is secure, and a static warning is not proof that it is exploitable. Preserve the input, environment, identity, response, and reasoning needed for another reviewer to reproduce a material claim.
Which approach covers common security questions?
“Can untrusted data reach a dangerous sink?”
SAST is usually the first check. It can trace a value across functions and files when it understands the framework. An agent can supplement the result by sending crafted input and observing whether the deployed path is reachable and how output is handled.
“Can a user access another tenant’s record?”
This is primarily a runtime and authorization question. An agent with two appropriately scoped test identities can exercise object access and workflow transitions; SAST may still reveal missing checks or dangerous controller patterns, but it cannot prove production tenant separation by reading code alone.
“Can a prompt make the assistant reveal a secret?”
Static rules may identify unsafe logging, retrieval, or tool wiring, but they rarely establish the model’s response under adversarial context. A controlled agentic test can combine prompts, retrieved documents, conversation state, and tool calls to assess disclosure and permission boundaries.

How should a team combine SAST and agentic testing?
A layered workflow gives each method the job it can perform reliably while reserving active testing for authorized environments.
- Define scope and assets. List repositories, services, APIs, identities, LLM endpoints, retrieval stores, and tools. Mark production systems and data that active testing must not touch.
- Run SAST on every meaningful code change. Confirm the analyzer supports the project’s languages and frameworks. Triage findings by reachability and impact rather than treating severity labels as proof.
- Build a representative test environment. Seed non-production data, configure realistic authentication and authorization, and instrument requests, tool calls, and model interactions. Remove real secrets where possible.
- Give the agent minimum necessary access. Use test identities and narrowly scoped API permissions. Separate read, write, and administrative capabilities, and require explicit approval for high-impact actions.
- Test workflows, not just endpoints. Exercise registration, password recovery, payments, approvals, exports, tenant boundaries, and other sequences in which state or business rules matter.
- Add LLM abuse cases where applicable. Test direct and indirect prompt injection, retrieval isolation, sensitive-data disclosure, unsafe output consumption, tool authorization, excessive agency, and failure handling.
- Validate important findings. Reproduce a claimed exploit with a controlled request or code trace. Record prerequisites, identity, affected asset, impact, and a safe proof rather than collecting unnecessary sensitive data.
- Remediate and retest. Rerun SAST, repeat the relevant dynamic or agentic scenario, and run regression tests. Confirm that the fix closes the original path without breaking an intended workflow.
- Keep deterministic checks in the pipeline. Agent prompts and model behavior can change; retain fixed rules and repeatable tests for known vulnerability classes and critical authorization properties.
OWASP’s Web Security Testing Guide recommends layering automated scanning with targeted manual testing and code review, particularly for business logic, authorization bypass, and context-specific risks. OWASP SAMM likewise advises people to review AI-assisted triage and fixes and to verify proposed changes by rerunning tools and relevant tests.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What safety controls are required for an AI security agent?
Tool access is part of the agent’s attack surface. Apply the same discipline you would use for a privileged integration, not an unrestricted chatbot.
- Least privilege: grant only the routes, data, identities, and tools needed for the test case.
- Input validation: treat repository content, web pages, tickets, retrieved documents, and model output as untrusted input.
- Human approval: require a person to authorize deletes, purchases, permission changes, production writes, or other high-risk actions.
- Isolation: separate test memory and credentials from production accounts and other tenants; prevent accidental cross-run data retention.
- Bounded execution: limit retries, depth of tool chains, request rates, spend, and time. Stop on anomalous behavior.
- Adversarial regression: retest after model, prompt, retrieval-index, tool, or permission changes, not only after application-code releases.
- Auditability: log prompts, retrieved sources, tool arguments, identities, responses, and approvals while minimizing sensitive content.
Run active tests only against systems you are authorized to test and in environments designed for them. AWS presents its Security Agent as supplementary to existing security tooling and says it does not replace a professional penetration test. OWASP’s AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet provides corresponding guidance on least privilege, untrusted inputs, human oversight, isolation, and bounded tool use.
What are the limitations and failure modes?
SAST limitations
- Unsupported languages, frameworks, generated code, reflection, and dynamic configuration can hide flows.
- Complex inter-service behavior and deployment controls may not exist in the analyzed repository.
- Warnings can be noisy, encouraging teams to suppress findings without validating them.
- Code that is secure in isolation can be unsafe when connected to a permissive identity or misconfigured service.
Agent limitations
- Unreachable routes, missing credentials, incomplete test data, or blocked tools create blind spots.
- Model-driven exploration is not perfectly deterministic; a run may miss a path another run finds.
- An agent can damage data, trigger notifications, consume resources, or expose secrets if permissions and boundaries are weak.
- Passing a set of prompts does not demonstrate that every prompt-injection or business-logic variant is safe.
- Vendor feature descriptions are not independent evidence of comparative effectiveness; verify the current scope for the version and environment you operate.
OWASP’s Web Security Testing Guide and its broader testing practice both support combining automation with manual investigation. Treat an agent’s confidence or narrative as a lead, then establish the claim with reproducible evidence.

Are OWASP AppSec Agent and AWS Security Agent the same kind of tool?
No. They are examples of different implementations, not interchangeable standards or endorsements. OWASP AppSec Agent is described by OWASP as an open-source TypeScript library and command-line interface for security code review, pull-request analysis, STRIDE threat modeling, fix generation, and test verification. AWS describes its Security Agent as combining SAST, DAST, and penetration-testing methods with targeted exploitation. Feature scope, availability, supported technologies, and required permissions can change, so evaluate a specific version against your own workflows.
How do you choose where to start?
Start with SAST when you need an inexpensive, repeatable control on every change, have limited access to a running environment, or want visibility into code paths normal tests never execute. Prioritize an agentic assessment when the highest-risk questions involve authorization state, multi-step business processes, external integrations, LLM prompts, retrieval, or tool permissions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can SAST test a running web application?
No. SAST analyzes code or an intermediate representation without executing the application. Testing live requests, sessions, and responses requires dynamic testing, an agent with runtime tools, or manual assessment.
Do AI security agents replace penetration testers?
They can automate reconnaissance and repeatable scenarios, but they do not replace professional penetration testing. Human testers are still needed for judgment, novel business logic, scope decisions, and safe validation of consequential findings.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How should agent findings be stored for an audit?
Keep the tested build or deployment identifier, scope, identity, prompts, retrieved material, tool arguments, timestamps, responses, and reviewer disposition. Redact secrets and personal data while retaining enough evidence for an authorized person to reproduce the result.
When should an LLM security test be rerun?
Rerun after changes to the model, system prompt, retrieval index, tool schema, permissions, safety filters, or orchestration code, even when the surrounding application code did not change. Also repeat critical scenarios after remediation to detect regressions.
