Yes, a scammer can make a convincing voice message, video call, profile, document or website with generative AI. The reliable way to spot the fraud is not to “detect AI” by appearance; it is to challenge the request. Treat any unexpected demand for money, passwords, verification codes, secrecy or immediate action as suspicious. Stop, avoid the supplied links and phone numbers, and independently contact the real person or organization through a trusted channel before doing anything.
The FBI says generative AI lets criminals create more believable fraud at larger scale. Modern scams may have perfect spelling, a familiar voice and a realistic-looking login page, so old clues such as bad grammar are no longer dependable.

What are AI scams, and why are they harder to recognize?
AI scams use generative tools to impersonate people or organizations and to produce persuasive text, images, audio, video, identity documents and websites. The FBI has warned that criminals use these capabilities to increase both the scale and believability of fraud. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has also described livestream video chats, forged documents and malicious websites that imitate financial-trading platforms.
AI removes many traditional warning signs. A fraudulent email can be polished, a fake profile can contain months of plausible posts, and a cloned voice can sound like a relative. A verified-looking account, caller ID, clean grammar or high-resolution video is therefore only a surface signal—not proof that the request is genuine.

The common pattern remains simple: establish trust, create emotional pressure, then obtain money, credentials, codes or access. Evaluate the request and the way you are being pushed to respond, not just the media used to deliver it.
What are the most important warning signs of an AI scam?
One sign may have an innocent explanation, but several together warrant stopping the interaction and verifying it independently.

The sender insists that you act “right now,” threatens a penalty, promises a limited opportunity or says you must keep the matter secret. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau describes creating an emergency or sense of urgency to make you act quickly as a classic fraud tactic. A legitimate bank, employer or government office can explain a deadline through a channel you locate yourself; it does not need to isolate you from that verification.
An unexpected request from a familiar identity
A relative, manager, bank employee, government official, celebrity or supplier suddenly asks for money, login details, one-time codes or remote access. Out-of-character behavior matters even when the name, profile photo, voice or video appears correct. Stop and contact the person or organization using a number or website you already trust.
Hard-to-reverse payment methods
Gift cards, cryptocurrency, cash, wire transfers and many payment-app transfers are favored because recovery is difficult. A request to buy cards and read the numbers aloud, move funds to a “safe” account, send crypto to unlock an account or pay a fee before receiving money is a major red flag. Never let a caller dictate the payment route while keeping you on the line.

Suspicious addresses, domains and contact details
Inspect the complete email address, phone number, web address and sender profile. One changed character, an added hyphen, an unfamiliar top-level domain or a login page reached through an unsolicited link can indicate spoofing. A page that lacks secure HTTPS, uses a mismatched domain or asks for credentials before explaining the issue should be closed; type the organization’s known address yourself instead.
Pressure to leave a protected platform
Fraudsters may move a conversation from a marketplace or social network to Signal, Telegram, WhatsApp, private email or another channel. The switch can remove moderation, payment protections and an evidence trail. Changing channels is not proof of fraud, but an unexplained demand to do so—especially alongside urgency or payment instructions—deserves independent verification.
A thin or inconsistent identity
Newly created profiles, sparse histories, unnatural comments, photos that do not match the claimed name and inconsistent identification documents all increase risk. AI can generate convincing individual images, but it cannot make a contradictory identity trustworthy. Check whether the account has a credible history and whether details agree across independent sources.
How can I tell if a voice message or call is AI-generated?
You usually cannot establish that audio is synthetic from sound alone. Treat a familiar voice making an unusual demand as unverified, then hang up and call the person through a number you find independently.
Audio clues to note
- Flat or mismatched emotion, an unnatural rhythm or words that do not fit the speaker’s normal vocabulary.
- Odd pauses, clipped syllables, robotic transitions or changes in tone between sentences.
- Background noise that loops, disappears or does not match the claimed setting.
- A request for money, access codes or secrecy that is out of character for the person.
These are clues, not a forensic test. Real phone connections can introduce lag and distortion, while high-quality synthetic audio may sound natural. Caller ID can also be spoofed, so do not redial the incoming number.

Safe verification for a family emergency
- End the call without arguing or revealing information.
- Call the relative on a number stored in your contacts or obtained from a trusted source, not the number that called you.
- Use a prearranged family secret word or phrase. Create one before an emergency occurs.
- Ask a question only the real person should know, but treat the answer as one signal rather than conclusive proof; compromised accounts may reveal personal details.
What signs reveal a deepfake video or AI image?
Visual artifacts can support suspicion, but a clean video cannot prove authenticity. Look for multiple inconsistencies while independently checking the identity.
- Lip movement that lags behind speech, facial motion that freezes or jumps, or expressions that do not fit the words.
- Distorted hands, teeth, eyes, jewelry, text or identification details.
- Shadows, reflections or lighting that change direction between frames.
- Watermarks, cropping or compression that obscure the original source.
- A face that looks plausible in one frame but changes shape around the hairline, ears or glasses.
- Unnatural wording, an incorrect accent or a tone that does not match the person’s usual manner.
Live video is not automatically safer: the CFTC has warned that scammers use livestream-style video chats. Ask to verify through a separate channel and never send money merely because someone appears on camera.
How do I verify a suspicious call, text, email or website?
Use a separate path that you locate yourself. Do not use a link, QR code, callback number, attachment or “support” address supplied in the suspicious message.
- Pause. Give yourself time. An imposed deadline is a manipulation tactic, not a reason to skip checks.
- Disconnect from the request. Do not click links, scan unknown QR codes, open unexpected attachments, share passwords or read out one-time codes.
- Find the official route. Type the organization’s web address manually, use its published app or find a phone number on a statement, card or prior correspondence. For a person, use a number already saved or another trusted contact.
- Contact through a different channel. A message should not be authenticated by replying to the same thread. Call the bank from the number on your card, or contact a family member through a separate number.
- Check the identity and request together. Confirm why the person is contacting you, what action is required and whether the payment or credential request is normal policy.
- Use a second approver. For business payments, have another authorized employee independently confirm a changed bank account or urgent invoice.
- Document the interaction. Save the message, full headers, phone number, URL, profile address, screenshots and payment instructions before blocking or deleting anything.
Never rely on one “AI detector” score or a verified badge. Independent contact and a normal process are stronger evidence than an artifact-free recording.
Which clues should I weigh when judging a suspicious message?
Use the following framework rather than counting visual glitches. A request that fails several independent checks should be treated as fraudulent until the real organization or person confirms it.

| Check | Lower-risk indication | Higher-risk indication |

| Identity authenticity | Established profile or known contact confirmed separately | New, sparse or inconsistent identity; unexpected impersonation |
| Contact path | You initiate contact through a saved number or official website | You must use the supplied callback number, link or QR code |

| Audio or video consistency | Media matches the context and still gets independent confirmation | Lag, odd movement, strange wording or an out-of-character demand |
What should I do if I already sent money or information?
Act immediately; speed can improve the chance of stopping a transfer and limits further misuse.
- Contact the provider through its official route. Call your bank, card issuer, payment app or cryptocurrency provider using the number in its official app, on your card or on a statement. Ask whether the transfer can be stopped, recalled or reversed and report the transaction as fraud.
- Secure exposed accounts. From a trusted device, change the affected passwords, change any reused passwords and enable multifactor authentication. Tell the relevant institution if an account, email or identity document may have been exposed.
- Preserve evidence. Keep original messages and email headers where possible, plus phone numbers, URLs, usernames, wallet addresses, receipts, transaction IDs and screenshots. Do not pay a second “recovery” service that promises to retrieve funds.
- Report the crime. File a report with the Federal Trade Commission and the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). Also notify your state attorney general and local police, especially for threats, identity theft or significant loss.
- Warn affected contacts. If your email or social account was used, tell contacts through a separate channel so they do not trust follow-up impersonation messages.
The CFPB warns that legitimate agencies do not demand payment to protect your money. Anyone who asks for a fee, gift card or cryptocurrency to “recover” funds is presenting another scam.
Where should I report an AI scam?
Use the reporting channel that matches the harm, and include as much technical evidence as you can.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Federal Trade Commission: report consumer fraud, impersonation and identity-theft attempts.
- FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center: report online fraud, crypto theft, business-email compromise and deepfake-enabled schemes.
- State attorney general: report deceptive businesses and scams affecting residents in your state.
- Local police: report threats, stalking, in-person impersonation or financial loss when a local incident record is needed.
- The platform or service: report the account, listing, domain or message so it can be investigated and removed.
Reporting does not guarantee recovery, but prompt, complete records help investigators connect related cases and may help providers act on accounts or transfers.
How can families and workplaces prepare before a scam arrives?
Preparation removes the uncertainty that scammers exploit.
Best Value
Family safeguards
- Agree on a secret phrase for genuine emergencies.
- Keep current phone numbers in a shared, trusted location.
- Set a rule that no one sends money from an urgent call without a second-person confirmation.
- Decide who can contact a hospital, school or employer through official numbers.
Workplace safeguards
- Require two-person approval for changed bank details, large payments and gift-card purchases.
- Verify executive or supplier requests through a known phone number, not a reply address.
- Train staff that multifactor codes are secrets; support personnel should never ask them to read a code aloud.
- Preserve email headers and transaction records for incident response.
Can AI detection tools prove that a message is fraudulent?
No. Detection tools may identify patterns in a file, but they can miss new generation methods and produce false positives. A genuine recording can contain compression artifacts, and a synthetic recording can avoid obvious defects. Treat detector output as a clue for a trained investigator, never as permission to send money or credentials.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a scammer clone someone’s voice from a short recording?
Voice-cloning systems can imitate a person from limited publicly available audio, and criminals may obtain samples from social posts or voicemail greetings. The existence of a familiar voice therefore cannot authenticate a call; verify the request through a number you already trust.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDoes caller ID prove who is calling?
No. Caller ID can be spoofed to display a relative, bank or government number. End an unexpected call and initiate a new call using a stored contact or an official statement, rather than pressing redial.
What should I save before deleting a suspicious message?
Capture the full message, sender address, complete URL, phone number, profile name, timestamps, attachments, email headers and any payment or wallet details. Keep original files when possible because screenshots alone may omit metadata investigators need.
Will my bank refund money lost to an AI scam?
It depends on the payment method, authorization, timing and the provider’s rules; no refund is guaranteed. Contact the provider immediately, explain that it was fraud, request a recall or freeze and follow its written dispute process.
What will a legitimate government agency never demand in an unsolicited message?
It will not require gift cards, cryptocurrency or cash to protect your money, and it should not ask for a one-time authentication code through an unexpected contact. End the interaction and find the agency’s official contact details yourself.
