Assume an online romance is unverified until the person’s identity is confirmed outside the app. Artificial intelligence can now generate profile photos, fluent messages, translations, voices, video and even documents, so a convincing chat or video call is not proof that the person is real. The safest test is independent verification: slow the relationship, refuse secrecy and payments, arrange a live interaction with a specific challenge, and confirm details through trusted public or real-world channels. Never send cryptocurrency, gift cards, wire transfers, credentials or intimate images to someone you have not independently verified. If money or material has already been sent, stop contact, preserve evidence and call the financial institution immediately.

What is AI romance fraud, and why is it getting harder to spot?

AI romance fraud is a confidence scam in which a criminal uses generated or altered content to pose as a romantic partner. The technology is used across the attack, not just to make a profile picture: criminals can create identities, write emotionally calibrated scripts, translate conversations, clone voices, produce video and fabricate documents while one operator manages many victims.

The FBI’s 2025 Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) report recorded 22,364 complaints containing AI-related information and adjusted losses of $893,346,472. It also recorded more than $19 million in confidence- and romance-scam losses with a likely AI nexus. “Likely AI nexus” is narrower than all romance fraud; many complaints do not establish whether AI was involved, and victims frequently do not report losses.

In the FBI San Francisco Division’s territory, reported romance-scam losses exceeded $40 million in 2025, compared with nearly $22 million in 2024. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said nearly 60% of people who reported losing money to a romance scam in 2025 said the contact began on social media. A 2025 McAfee survey of 1,000 U.S. adults found that 26% said they or someone they know had been approached by an AI chatbot posing as a real person; 76% believed AI could be used to fake romantic relationships and manipulate people financially or emotionally.

INTERPOL has described AI-enhanced fraud as 4.5 times more profitable than traditional methods. Its assessment says large language models, cryptocurrency and fraud-as-a-service operations let criminals run more professional campaigns at relatively little cost. These figures are reported complaints and reported losses, not a census of all incidents.

“The FBI is warning the public that criminals exploit generative artificial intelligence (AI) to commit fraud on a larger scale which increases the believability of their schemes.”

How does an AI romance scam work from first contact to payment?

The sequence varies, but the same stages appear across dating apps, social networks and private messaging services.

1. Targeting and identity creation

A criminal chooses a target and builds an attractive persona with a copied or AI-generated photograph, a plausible job and travel history, and a biography tuned to the target’s interests. INTERPOL reports the use of AI-generated personas and deepfake images in romance-based fraud. A single group may operate many identities at once.

2. Trust-building with generated conversation

Language models can produce quick, grammatically polished messages, remember details and adjust tone to appear caring, flirtatious or sympathetic. Translation tools remove language barriers. The FBI says AI-generated text makes romance and confidence schemes more believable and helps criminals overcome common warning signs such as awkward wording or inconsistent grammar.

3. Isolation and escalation

Once a target responds, the scammer often pushes the conversation away from the dating service to a private channel. They may request secrecy, claim that friends or family would not understand, or create a crisis involving travel, illness, customs, a business problem or a lost wallet. FTC reporting says scammers tailor pitches to public profile information, invent emergencies and steer victims toward fake investment platforms.

4. Monetization or coercion

The requested asset can be money, cryptocurrency, gift cards, account credentials or intimate images. A fake investment dashboard may display profits and then demand a tax, withdrawal or verification fee. In sextortion, the criminal first requests intimate material and later threatens to send it to family, employers or followers. INTERPOL reports that sextortion is increasingly integrated into romance and investment scams, with scripts and AI-generated content supporting the pressure.

5. Scaling and repetition

AI lowers the cost of producing convincing content and allows organized groups to maintain many conversations simultaneously. A person who seems constantly available may actually be one identity in a scripted operation, with different staff or software taking shifts.

How can I tell if the person I met online is real?

No single detector proves authenticity. Use several independent checks, and treat refusal or pressure as evidence about risk even when the images and voice look genuine.

Check the identity outside the dating profile

  • Search the person’s name, employer, claimed city and public history separately; do not rely on links they provide.
  • Use reverse-image search on profile photos and look for the same image under different names, locations or occupations. A clean result does not prove the image is genuine because a newly generated image may have no history.
  • Ask specific, ordinary questions about a claimed workplace, neighborhood or timeline, then check the answers through an independent source. Keep questions non-invasive and do not collect sensitive personal data.
  • Request a live interaction that is difficult to script, such as a video call in which the person performs a spontaneous action you choose in the moment. A call is only one signal; a convincing deepfake or a real person acting as a front can still pass it.
  • Confirm identity through a trusted, previously established channel or a real-world contact when appropriate. Never use a phone number, email address or social account supplied only after the romance begins as your sole proof.

Watch the pace and emotional pattern

Unusually polished messages delivered constantly and at high speed can indicate automation or a team. Rapid declarations of love, intense attention, guilt when you do not reply, or pressure to keep the relationship secret are behavioral warning signs regardless of whether AI is visible.

Test the financial boundary

State clearly that you do not send money, invest through a romantic contact, share one-time codes or receive funds for someone else. A genuine partner should accept the boundary. A scammer commonly reframes it as a test of love, an emergency or a limited-time opportunity.

Which warning signs point to money fraud, romance baiting or sextortion?

The table separates common variants by the stage and asset being targeted. A campaign can move from one row to another.

Variant Typical stage AI capabilities used Requested asset Common platforms Best immediate response
Classic confidence scam Trust-building followed by a crisis Profile images, scripts, translation and message generation Wire transfer, gift card or account access Dating app, social network or messaging app Pause; verify identity; contact your bank before sending anything
Romance baiting or investment fraud After emotional trust is established Polished investment explanations, fake documents, generated chat and support agents Cryptocurrency, bank transfer and “fees” to release profits Social media, messaging apps and a linked trading site Do not deposit; independently research the platform; report it and alert your financial institution
AI-assisted sextortion After intimate conversation or image exchange Face-swapping, generated images, threatening scripts, cloned voice or video More images, money or credentials Dating and messaging apps, email and social media Do not pay or send more material; preserve threats; report and seek support
Identity or account takeover During “help me access my account” or verification requests Fake ID documents, voice impersonation and convincing support messages Passwords, one-time codes, identity documents or remote access Messaging apps, email and social platforms End contact; change passwords; enable multifactor authentication and call the real service

Can scammers clone a voice or fake a video call?

Yes. Voice-cloning systems can produce speech from short audio samples, and synthetic or altered video can make a face appear to speak. A live call therefore confirms only that convincing audio or video was delivered, not that the person is the claimed individual.

Use layered verification instead of trying to detect artifacts. Ask for a spontaneous action, change the topic, and arrange another call through an independently obtained account. Look for identity consistency across time, but remember that criminals can combine a real accomplice, a recorded clip and generated media. Never send money merely because someone called from a familiar-looking number or appeared on camera.

What should I do when a warning sign appears?

Interrupt the process before investigating. The goal is to prevent the next payment or disclosure while keeping evidence intact.

  1. Pause communication and payments. Do not argue, click new links, install remote-access software or send additional images. You can stop replying without explaining why.
  2. Preserve evidence. Save messages, email headers, profile URLs, usernames, phone numbers, payment receipts, wallet addresses, screenshots and a dated timeline. Do not edit screenshots or delete the chat until reports are filed.
  3. Verify independently. Contact the supposed employer, friend or service through a number or website you found yourself. Do not use contact details supplied by the romantic contact.
  4. Secure accounts. Change reused passwords, revoke active sessions, enable multifactor authentication and tell your bank if credentials or identity documents were exposed.
  5. Report the account and platform. Use the dating, social or messaging service’s fraud and impersonation tools, attaching evidence and the payment request.
  6. Tell a trusted person. Isolation is part of the scam design. A friend or family member can review the timeline and help prevent further contact.

What if I already sent money or cryptocurrency?

Act immediately; recovery is uncertain but delay removes options. Contact the bank, card issuer, wire service or cryptocurrency exchange using its official contact channel and ask about a recall, chargeback, freeze or fraud investigation. Give the exact amount, date, recipient details, transaction ID and wallet address.

Report suspected internet crime to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) if you are in the United States, and use your country’s equivalent reporting service elsewhere. The FBI specifically advises suspected victims to report to IC3 and contact financial institutions promptly. Do not pay a second “recovery agent” who promises to retrieve funds for an upfront fee; that is a common follow-on scam.

If intimate images are involved, do not pay or send more material. Preserve the threats, report the account and consider contacting local law enforcement or a specialist victim-support service. You are not responsible for the criminal’s conduct, and shame should not delay reporting.

How should I interpret the statistics?

Reported figures show the scale of known harm, not the total number of victims. The FBI says its complaint numbers may not tell the whole story because people may feel embarrassed or assume nothing can be done. AI attribution is also uneven: some complaints identify a likely AI connection, while others record romance fraud without establishing which tools were used.

The most reliable conclusion is not that every romance scam is AI-generated. It is that AI makes impersonation, personalization and volume cheaper, so traditional safeguards—slowing down, verifying independently and refusing financial or intimate demands—matter even when every message looks natural.

What is a practical safety checklist before meeting an online partner?

  • Keep early conversations on the platform until basic identity checks are complete.
  • Tell a friend where and when you communicate or meet; use a public location for an in-person meeting.
  • Limit public profile details that reveal your address, employer, routine or family relationships.
  • Use unique passwords and multifactor authentication on dating, email and financial accounts.
  • Never share one-time codes, passwords, copies of identity documents or access to your device.
  • Do not invest through a romantic contact or a platform they introduce, especially when cryptocurrency or guaranteed returns are involved.
  • Treat urgency, secrecy, refusal of reasonable verification and any request for money or intimate material as a stop signal.

FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center, 2025 annual report

INTERPOL summarizes the broader trend this way: “The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), large language models and cryptocurrencies combined with phishing- and ransomware-as-a-service business models have resulted in more sophisticated and professional fraud campaigns without the need for advanced technical skills, and at relatively little cost.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I confront an online romance scammer before reporting the account?

No. Confrontation can prompt threats, evidence deletion or renewed manipulation. Save the conversation, block or mute the account after reports are submitted, and let the platform or investigators handle contact.

Can a reverse-image search prove that a dating profile is genuine?

No. It can reveal stolen or reused photographs, but an original or AI-generated image may have no searchable history. Treat the result as one clue in a broader identity check.

Is cryptocurrency payment recoverable after a romance scam?

Cryptocurrency transfers are often difficult to reverse, but an exchange may be able to flag or freeze assets if notified quickly. Provide the transaction ID and wallet address to the exchange and investigators; never pay an unsolicited recovery service.

What should friends say to someone who is being scammed?

Lead with concern rather than blame, ask to review the requests together and help make the bank and reporting calls. Direct accusations can cause the person to defend the scammer and withdraw further.
