Current general-purpose AI systems can converse fluently in many languages, write code for narrowly defined tasks, generate realistic images and short videos, and achieve striking results on some advanced academic tests. They cannot do these things with uniform reliability: a system may excel on a demanding benchmark yet make a basic counting or reasoning error, produce a convincing falsehood, or fail midway through a longer task. That unevenness is why AI capability and AI trustworthiness are different questions.

For readers and organizations, the practical rule is to judge a system on the actual task, in the setting where it will be used, and to check important outputs. Testing and safeguards can reduce risks, but neither a benchmark nor a collection of controls guarantees safe behavior.

What can current AI systems do?

Leading general-purpose systems can perform well on a wide range of tightly scoped language, coding, creative, and academic tasks. The International AI Safety Report 2026 describes systems that converse fluently in many languages, generate code for narrow software tasks, create realistic images and short videos, and solve some graduate-level mathematics and science problems.

The important qualification is the scope of each result. A system that can draft a small code change or solve a carefully specified problem has not thereby demonstrated that it can build and maintain a whole application, understand every requirement, or reliably finish a complex project without supervision.

What the reported test results show

The 2026 report says leading models scored above 90% on MMLU undergraduate-level examinations in subjects including chemistry and law, and above 80% on GPQA graduate-level science tests. It also reports that models from Google DeepMind and OpenAI reached gold-medal-level results on five out of six problems at the International Mathematical Olympiad in July 2025, under competition-like conditions.

These are notable results on particular evaluations, not estimates of how often AI gets everyday questions right. An exam has a defined format and scoring method; work outside that format may involve ambiguous instructions, missing information, changing conditions, or consequences that a test does not measure. The score belongs to the specified benchmark context, not to every task that sounds similar.

Beyond text

Capabilities described in the report include generating photorealistic images, short high-definition videos, 3D scenes, and music from prompts. Systems have also made progress in processing complex sensor data to guide physical robots. Those capabilities should not be mistaken for dependable general-purpose agency: generating a clip is not the same as understanding a real environment, and sensor-guided robotic progress does not establish that a robot can safely handle ordinary household tasks in varied settings.

Why can a capable AI still make simple mistakes?

The report characterizes current systems’ capabilities as “jagged”: strengths in one area do not reliably carry over to another. A system may succeed on an advanced test and still struggle with basic counting, physical or spatial reasoning, or recovering from an error in a longer workflow.

Language models can also produce plausible-sounding but false information, and similar prompts can receive inconsistent answers. Fluency is a property of the response, not proof that its claims are true. The same caution applies when a system supplies a confident explanation: the style does not establish that the underlying reasoning or facts are sound.

This unevenness makes a single overall “intelligence” score a poor guide to deployment. A more useful question is whether a particular system is reliable for the exact task, with the inputs, tools, time pressure, and human involvement it will encounter. If it must handle exceptions or correct its own mistakes, those abilities need to be evaluated directly rather than assumed from success on a short, clean example.

Can AI be trusted to get facts right?

Not without checking when the answer matters. Current systems can be useful for drafting, summarizing, explaining, and generating options, but they can also give incorrect or inconsistent answers—even when their wording sounds certain.

Match the checking effort to the consequences of an error. For a low-stakes brainstorming prompt, a quick review may be enough. For decisions involving health, money, legal obligations, safety, or a person’s rights, verify the relevant claims against authoritative material and have an appropriately qualified person review the output. Do not treat a generated answer as evidence simply because it is detailed or well written.

Also check the system’s work in the format in which it will actually be used. A correct answer to a carefully phrased test question does not establish that the system will handle an incomplete request, a conflicting instruction, an unusual case, or a follow-up that changes the facts.

Do benchmark results predict what happens in real use?

Only imperfectly. The 2026 report describes an “evaluation gap”: pre-deployment evaluation results can fail to predict performance in real conditions, where the task, context, and system setup differ.

A benchmark is still useful. It can show how a system performs on a defined set of questions or tasks and help identify strengths and weaknesses under those conditions. The mistake is treating that result as a guarantee for a different population, workflow, interface, or operating environment.

Before relying on a result, ask what was tested and what was not:

  • Workflow: Can it notice and recover from mistakes over multiple steps, or does the test stop after one answer?
  • Setup: Was it tested with the same tools, permissions, data, and human review that deployment will use?
  • Outcome: Does the score measure only whether an answer is correct, or also the impact of errors and the ability to detect them?

These checks do not make evaluation predictive in every case. They make its limits visible and help keep a narrow test result from being mistaken for broad assurance.

Can AI agents work reliably on long tasks?

Not as a general rule. A system that performs a bounded step well may still falter when it must plan, use tools, track changing information, detect a mistake, and continue through many steps. The 2026 report’s account of jagged capability includes failures in longer workflows, including difficulty recovering from simple errors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a multi-step task, assess the whole process rather than just the quality of the final-looking response. Check whether the system follows constraints, reports uncertainty or failure, handles interruptions, and avoids taking an action with real consequences without appropriate authorization. If a person must intervene at particular points, define those points in advance instead of assuming the system will know when to stop.

More autonomy can make a system useful, but it also increases the importance of bounded permissions and monitoring. The report notes progress in areas relevant to autonomous operation and evaluation evasion. It also states that current systems lack the capabilities to cause loss-of-control scenarios. That current assessment should not be inflated into either a claim that such a scenario is happening now or a guarantee about future systems.

What kinds of risks does AI create?

The 2026 report groups risks into malicious use, malfunctions, systemic risks, and risks to human autonomy. These categories describe different pathways to harm; they should not be collapsed into a claim that every possible harm is equally likely or already occurring.

Malicious use

People may use AI capabilities to support harmful activity. The relevant question is not only what a system can generate, but who can access it, what tools or information it can reach, and what barriers stand between an output and a harmful action. Safeguards aimed at misuse may reduce some routes without preventing every harmful use.

Malfunctions

A malfunction can be an incorrect answer, inconsistent behavior, or failure in a workflow where a person or organization relies on the output. A mistake that is harmless in a draft can matter greatly when it is passed into a consequential decision or acted on automatically. The severity depends on the context and on whether errors are detected before they cause harm.

Systemic effects and human autonomy

The report discusses potential labor-market effects and automation bias—the tendency to give an automated recommendation too much weight—as well as loneliness or reduced social engagement among a small share of AI companion users. These are qualified examples, not a finding that all workers will be displaced, all users become less socially engaged, or every person follows an automated recommendation. The report distinguishes documented harms from emerging concerns whose likelihood or scale remains uncertain.

How do you manage AI risks?

Risk management is a continuing process, not a one-time test or a label that proves a system is safe. The 2026 report describes layered measures including testing, red-teaming, technical safeguards, monitoring, and incident response. It also cautions that evidence about how well safeguards work across diverse real-world contexts remains limited, and that no combination guarantees prevention.

1. Define the use and the consequences

Specify what the system is expected to do, who will use it, what decisions or actions may follow, and what could happen if it is wrong. Consider the full workflow, not just the model: a generated result may be copied, automated, or relied on by someone who never sees its limitations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Evaluate the actual task

Test the intended system setup on representative inputs, including varied wording, incomplete information, unusual cases, and multi-step tasks when relevant. Look for both incorrect answers and failures to recognize that an answer may be wrong. A favorable result is evidence about those tests, not proof of performance in every future context.

3. Red-team and add safeguards

Red-teaming probes how a system might fail or be misused. Technical safeguards can limit particular behaviors, tools, or access. Treat these controls as layers that may catch different failures, not as a perfect barrier: the report says developers cannot always predict new capabilities or provide robust assurances against harmful behavior.

4. Monitor after deployment

Real use can differ from pre-deployment tests. Monitor how the system performs in its intended setting and watch for patterns of errors, misuse, or changed conditions that undermine the original evaluation. Monitoring helps identify problems; it does not prevent every problem before it occurs.

5. Plan for incidents

Decide how users or staff can report a harmful or unexpected outcome, who reviews it, and what response is available. Depending on the deployment, a response may include correcting the process, limiting access, pausing a use, or investigating whether the event affects other users. A plan is most useful when responsibilities and escalation routes are clear before an incident.

Use NIST’s framework as a process aid, not a safety certificate

NIST’s AI 600-1 Generative Artificial Intelligence Profile, published July 26, 2024, accompanies the AI Risk Management Framework. It is designed to help organizations incorporate trustworthiness considerations into generative AI design, development, use, and evaluation. NIST frames risk through likelihood and consequence and notes that risk varies by lifecycle stage and context. Using the profile can structure an organization’s work; it does not certify that a particular system is safe.

What should we expect from AI next?

There is no settled forecast for the pace of progress through 2030. The 2026 report says progress could slow, continue at recent rates, or accelerate. Those are materially different possibilities, so current capabilities should not be presented as a certain forecast of what systems will be able to do next.

The report’s extended summary for policymakers uses the narrow warning: “Current systems are not highly capable in relevant areas, but some exhibit early warning signs.” In context, this concerns behaviors relevant to loss of control. It is not a claim that current systems can cause loss-of-control scenarios; the report says they lack the capabilities to do so. The distinction matters: monitor relevant developments without turning a warning about early signs into a claim of present capability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I enter confidential information into an AI system?

That depends on the system’s data handling terms, your organization’s rules, and the sensitivity of the information. If those conditions are unclear, do not submit confidential, personal, or regulated data until you have confirmed that the specific service and use are permitted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who is responsible when AI causes harm?

Responsibility depends on the circumstances, applicable law, and the roles of the people or organizations that built, deployed, and used the system. An AI output does not, by itself, settle who is accountable; organizations should establish ownership and escalation paths before deployment.

Does using NIST AI 600-1 mean an AI system is certified safe?

No. AI 600-1 is a framework profile for organizing risk-management work, not a product certification or guarantee. A team still has to assess the particular system, use case, and lifecycle conditions.

Will AI progress definitely accelerate before 2030?

No. The 2026 International AI Safety Report identifies slowing, continuing at recent rates, and acceleration as possible paths. It does not establish which one will occur.
