AI revenue is not yet directly comparable across major technology companies: the cited disclosures do not provide a common, audited AI-revenue line. To judge whether spending is paying off, separate AI-specific sales from broader cloud or software proxies, then test whether demand becomes profitable revenue and cash flow after operating costs, depreciation and the capital required to build and run infrastructure.

Why a simple AI revenue-to-capex ratio can mislead

It is tempting to divide a company’s AI revenue by its AI capital spending and treat the result as a return. That ratio is usually unavailable, and even when an analyst estimate supplies both figures, the numerator and denominator may not match in scope or timing.

Capital expenditure is a period’s investment in assets; the resulting servers, networking equipment and facilities can support workloads for years. Those workloads may include AI and non-AI services. Revenue, meanwhile, can arise in different parts of a business: cloud infrastructure, paid software features, advertising, or sales of chips and other equipment to customers. A supplier’s AI-related sales are not the same thing as the profits its customers earn from using the products.

The useful question is therefore not whether one year’s AI revenue is bigger than that year’s capex. Ask whether a company is turning durable demand into incremental profitable revenue and cash flow, and whether those returns justify the capital, asset-life and execution risks.

What the reported figures do—and do not—show

Microsoft: scale and adoption, but no standalone AI revenue total

Microsoft’s FY2026 annual report records total revenue of $331.8 billion and Microsoft Cloud revenue of $214.4 billion. Azure grew 41% year over year and exceeded $100 billion. Microsoft 365 Copilot surpassed 30 million paid seats, while company-wide operating income was $155.2 billion. These figures establish the scale of the business and provide evidence of cloud growth and product adoption; they do not isolate a total for AI revenue or show how much operating income came from AI.

Those measures answer different questions. Azure growth is a broad cloud indicator, not an AI-only growth rate. Paid Copilot seats indicate adoption, but seats alone do not disclose the revenue recognized per seat, usage, incremental costs or profit contribution. Operating income covers Microsoft’s entire business. Treating any of these as standalone AI sales or AI profit would overstate what the disclosures establish.

Microsoft’s FY2026 shareholder letter also frames the economics around value delivered: “As a result, customers will increasingly measure the cost of tokens against the outcomes they produce,” CEO Satya Nadella wrote. For investors, that points to a practical test: are customers willing to pay enough for AI outcomes to cover inference and other service costs, and does that willingness persist?

Backlog and paid seats are demand signals, not current-period sales

Microsoft reported $678 billion of commercial remaining performance obligations (RPO) and more than 30 million paid Microsoft 365 Copilot seats in FY2026. RPO represents contracted amounts expected to be recognized as revenue in the future; it is not revenue already earned in the reporting period. It also should not be treated as an AI backlog unless the company identifies the AI-specific portion. Paid seats show that customers have adopted a product, but do not by themselves establish usage, retention, incremental revenue or margins.

Use these indicators to assess demand visibility alongside recognized revenue—not as substitutes for it. A large backlog can help support a growth case, but investors still need to understand when obligations convert into sales, what capacity is required to serve them, and how much profit remains.

NVIDIA: evidence of supplier demand, not customer returns

NVIDIA reported FY2026 revenue of $215.9 billion, up 65%, and fourth-quarter data-center revenue of $62.3 billion, up 75% year over year. CEO Jensen Huang said customers were “racing to invest in AI compute.” The figures show rapid growth in NVIDIA’s reported business and are consistent with strong demand for data-center products. They do not reveal the returns earned by cloud providers or other buyers of that infrastructure.

This distinction matters across the AI stack. A chip supplier can recognize revenue when it sells products, while the customer may need years of utilization and service sales to recover the purchase price and related operating costs. Supplier growth is relevant context for investment demand, but it is not proof that the buyers’ AI businesses are profitable.

How much are technology companies spending?

Technology Business Research (TBR), March 2026 report AWS, Microsoft, Google and Oracle Estimated capex: about $180 billion in calendar 2024, $300 billion in 2025 and $420 billion in 2026 2025 and 2026 are estimates, not finalized reported spending. TBR describes its basis as company filings and TBR estimates.
Allianz Research, March 25, 2026 Hyperscalers Approximately $575 billion of capex; expected to rise 50% in 2026 An estimate with a different scope and method from TBR’s four-company series. Do not add it to TBR’s figures.
S&P Global Market Intelligence, March 13, 2026 Alphabet, Amazon and Microsoft $495 billion in combined 2026 capex projections, based on Q4 2025 earnings calls; up 61% from 2025 and six times the 2020 level A dated summary of company projections, not actual 2026 spending or a finalized sector total.

TBR’s March 2026 report also estimates AI/GenAI revenue across AWS, Microsoft, Google and Oracle at about $25 billion in calendar 2024, $45 billion in 2025 and $75 billion in 2026. The later figures are estimates, not audited AI revenue or company-reported line items. In that same four-company estimate, projected capex is much larger than estimated AI/GenAI revenue. That gap is a useful signal to investigate, not a standalone return calculation: the spending can support non-AI workloads and future periods, while revenue estimates may use a different attribution method from company accounts.

Allianz Research identifies revenue delivery and cash-flow visibility as investor concerns and notes that value creation may be uneven across the technology stack. S&P Global Market Intelligence’s March 2026 analysis likewise observed that providers were reporting strong demand for AI capacity, while analysts could not yet draw a clear line from AI investments to appreciable returns. Demand and returns are separate parts of the investment case.

Compare the spending measure with care

Capex is not always the same as cash paid

Microsoft’s FY2026 fourth-quarter earnings call reported $41 billion in capital expenditures. CFO Amy Hood said: “Roughly two thirds of our capex was for short-lived assets, primarily CPUs and GPUs as customers increasingly build solutions that leverage both AI and non-AI infrastructure.” The same call reported $35.8 billion in cash paid for property and equipment.

The two figures describe related but distinct measures and should not be casually substituted for one another. Capex is generally discussed as investment recognized for a period, while cash paid tracks cash outflows for property and equipment; payment timing and accounting treatment can differ. When comparing companies, use the same measure where possible, and label it. Also note Hood’s qualification: the short-lived assets served both AI and non-AI infrastructure, so the full capex figure cannot be assigned to AI.

Asset life changes the payback question

Short-lived equipment may need replacement sooner than long-lived facilities, which affects depreciation, refresh cycles and the time available to earn a return. Microsoft’s statement that roughly two thirds of FY2026 Q4 capex went to short-lived assets makes useful life especially relevant to its spending profile. Do not assume that a dollar of equipment capex and a dollar of facility investment create the same duration of productive capacity.

Investors should examine depreciation and amortization, disclosed asset lives, utilization, power and maintenance requirements, and any financing arrangements such as leases. If the infrastructure is underused, or equipment becomes obsolete before enough revenue is earned, reported demand may not translate into attractive returns. If it is highly utilized across several workloads, allocating all its cost to AI could also misstate AI economics.

A practical company-by-company scorecard

Build the comparison for the same company and reporting period. Keep reported results, management guidance and external estimates in separate rows or columns. A compact scorecard can expose where evidence is strong and where an apparent AI growth story rests on proxies.

Dimension What to record What it tells you
Revenue evidence Standalone AI revenue, if separately reported; otherwise label the proxy, such as cloud growth, product seats or usage Whether the figure actually measures AI sales, and whether it is recognized revenue rather than an adoption indicator.
Demand visibility RPO or backlog, paid adoption, utilization and disclosed capacity constraints How much demand may convert into future revenue and whether delivery capacity is limiting growth. Contracted future obligations are not current revenue.
Profit conversion Gross margin, operating margin and disclosed costs of serving AI workloads Whether sales leave an incremental profit after inference, power, depreciation and product or model development costs.
Capital burden Capex, cash paid for property and equipment, leases, asset lives and refresh needs How much capital is committed, when it is paid, and how long assets may contribute to revenue.
Cash and funding Operating cash flow, free cash flow after investment, debt and other financing Whether operations can fund the build-out and whether external financing increases risk or constrains flexibility.
Comparability Fiscal or calendar year; reported or estimated; AI-specific or broad business metric; actual or forecast Whether the figures belong in the same comparison at all.

Start with the narrowest defensible revenue figure

Prefer separately disclosed AI revenue when a company reports it with a clear definition and period. If it does not, state what proxy you are using and what it misses. For Microsoft, Azure growth, Copilot seats and Microsoft Cloud revenue are useful context, but none is a disclosed standalone AI revenue total in the FY2026 figures above. Avoid estimating an AI share from broad cloud growth unless the method and assumptions are explicit; do not present such an estimate as a company-reported result.

Move from revenue to contribution and cash

Revenue growth is only the first step. Compare gross profit and operating income where disclosed, then account for the costs of delivering the service. Inference consumes computing resources; infrastructure also has power and operating costs. Product development and ongoing model work can affect expenses. Depreciation spreads asset cost across periods, so a fast-growing business can still have weak economics if the cost base rises just as quickly.

Then check operating cash flow and free cash flow after investment. A business may report growing revenue and operating income while its infrastructure build-out consumes substantial cash. Conversely, one period of high capex can precede years of use, so a single-year free-cash-flow decline does not settle the long-term return question. Track the pattern across periods and relate it to capacity use and recognized revenue.

Keep attribution and time periods aligned

Do not compare a fiscal-quarter company result directly with a calendar-year industry estimate without showing the mismatch. Do not put analyst estimates beside reported figures without labeling them. Do not compare broad cloud revenue with an AI-only capex estimate—or a supplier’s chip sales with a cloud provider’s AI sales—as if the definitions were identical.

For every figure, record the publisher, period, unit, scope and status: reported, guided, or estimated. If a figure covers a group of companies, preserve that group rather than attributing the total to one company. If an estimate’s method is not detailed, say that it is an estimate and avoid implying more precision than the publisher provides.

Signals that strengthen—or weaken—the investment case

Stronger evidence of returns

  • AI-specific recognized revenue grows over comparable periods, with a clear definition and credible attribution.
  • Paid adoption or usage expands and converts into recurring revenue, rather than remaining a seat count or broad demand claim.
  • Gross or operating margins hold up as AI workloads scale, or management provides evidence that serving costs are improving.
  • Infrastructure utilization and customer commitments support the expected use of newly built capacity.
  • Operating cash flow and free cash flow remain fundable after investment, or the company explains a plausible multi-year path to cash returns.

Reasons to be cautious

  • AI revenue is inferred from total cloud growth, total software sales or supplier revenue without an explicit attribution method.
  • Backlog or paid seats are described as if they were revenue already recognized or profit already earned.
  • Capex estimates with different company sets and periods are combined into a single total.
  • Investment rises faster than disclosed revenue evidence, while utilization, asset life or cash-flow visibility remains unclear.
  • Management reports demand but gives little information about the cost to serve, depreciation burden or expected funding needs.

What investors can conclude from the current evidence

The disclosed figures show substantial infrastructure investment, strong supplier growth, expanding cloud businesses and adoption of AI-related products. They do not, by themselves, establish that hyperscalers are already earning attractive returns on AI investment. Microsoft’s reported business metrics are not a standalone AI revenue line; NVIDIA’s data-center sales describe a supplier; and the TBR, Allianz Research and S&P Global figures are estimates or projections with different scopes.

A sound assessment therefore combines revenue attribution, demand conversion, margins, cash flow and capital life rather than relying on one headline ratio. It also separates a company’s reported operating performance from analyst estimates and management forecasts. Operational growth can inform an investment thesis, but it cannot alone determine a stock’s valuation or whether a security is suitable for an individual investor.
