The render is often the cheap part of an AI product video. Runway Dev says a finished ten-second, 1080p Product Ad Recipe output costs $4.56 at its published credit rate, yet reaching a first usable ad commonly takes $200–$500 in generations and revisions. Those are provider-published figures, not an industry average. The difference is the retry loop: discarded shots, changed prompts, corrected product references, and rerun workflow steps.
To control spending, measure the cost of an approved asset rather than the price of one generation. Choose a workflow that lets you validate a product image or key frame before animating it, draft at a lower resolution, understand each provider’s refund rules, and use idempotency keys when an API request times out.

AI video pricing is usually quoted per second, credit, or finished job. A product team, however, pays for every attempt that consumes credits before anyone approves the final shot. A generation can be technically complete and still be unusable because a label is misspelled, a bottle changes shape, a hand merges with the package, or the camera move hides the product.
Runway Dev’s 2026 product-video guidance captures the distinction: “A finished product ad costs a few dollars to generate. Getting to your first one usually costs a great deal more, because the price of a generation is not the price of an approved asset.” Its estimate of $200–$500 to reach a first usable ad describes the complete path to approval, not a guaranteed market average.

The same documentation lists a $4.56 direct generation cost for a ten-second, 1080p Product Ad Recipe output. At the published rate, the first four seconds use 216 credits and each additional second uses 40 credits; with credits priced at $0.01 each, the calculation is 216 + (6 × 40) = 456 credits, or $4.56. One successful render can therefore be inexpensive while the sequence of rejected renders is costly.

This is why a production budget should separate render cost from approval cost. The first is the provider’s charge for a job. The second includes all attempts, review time, prompt and reference changes, queue delays, and reruns needed to obtain an asset that meets the brief.
What causes product-video retries?
Product advertising is unusually sensitive to small visual errors. A viewer may accept an abstract image that changes from frame to frame, but a recognizable package, device, or bottle must remain consistent throughout the shot.
Labels and text
Generative models can alter spelling, type size, logos, or the number of lines on a package. A clip may look polished at a glance and fail close inspection, forcing a new reference image, prompt, or model step. Text that is correct in one frame can still warp during motion.
Geometry and identity
Containers, screens, buttons, and other rigid objects may gain or lose edges as the camera moves. Caps can change shape, a phone can acquire a different camera layout, or a product can subtly switch colors between frames. These errors are especially expensive when a brand requires a precise silhouette.

When a hand picks up or opens a product, fingers can merge, joints can bend incorrectly, and contact with the object can look weightless. Fixing the interaction often means changing the pose, timing, camera angle, or reference image, which can restart more than one stage of a workflow.
Camera motion and composition
A prompt may produce the right product but an unusable move: the subject leaves the frame, the hero angle is obscured, or motion blur hides a required detail. Changing the camera instruction can alter lighting and object identity at the same time, creating another retry rather than a small correction.

Brand-specific details
Colors, materials, finishes, and distinctive package features are failure-sensitive. A matte surface may become glossy, a specific shade may drift, or a product reference may be ignored once animation begins. Treating the reference as an optional suggestion instead of a controlled input increases the chance of a full rerun.
How do you calculate the cost of an approved asset?
Use a planning model, not a claim about an industry-wide average:

Then track review labor and waiting time separately:
Total approval cost = direct generation spend + human review cost + queue and coordination time.
For the Runway example, one ten-second 1080p output is $4.56 at the published rate. Five paid attempts would be $22.80 in direct credits before review. That arithmetic is only an illustration of the retry effect; it does not predict how many attempts a particular campaign will need. The provider’s separate $200–$500 estimate demonstrates that real approval paths can include many more generations and workflow operations than the final ten-second render suggests.
Record attempts by shot, not only by project. A single ad can contain a successful opening and an expensive product close-up, and averaging them together hides where retries occur. A useful log includes the request ID, prompt or parameter version, reference files, model or recipe step, resolution, duration, result status, and reason for rejection.
Do AI video tools charge for failed generations?
No universal rule exists. A synchronous API error may be free, while a job that runs out of budget or completes with an unwanted result can still consume credits. Check the provider’s treatment of failed, moderated, cancelled, and budget-exhausted jobs before estimating campaign cost.

“Failed” does not mean “rejected by a human.” A completed clip that violates a brand brief may be billable even if the production team discards it. Budget exhaustion is another special case: Luma’s documentation warns that such a job can be partially charged, so an automatic retry may increase the total rather than recover the first attempt.
Which factors change the direct price of a generation?
Four variables usually dominate the provider charge: resolution, duration, model or recipe, and optional inputs such as audio or references. They also change the number of retries a team is likely to need.
Resolution
Higher resolution increases the per-second rate in the published Firefly schedule: 20 credits at 540p, 50 at 720p, and 100 at 1080p. A high-resolution draft that fails for a simple composition problem wastes more credits than a low-resolution draft of the same duration.
Duration
Most listed rates scale with seconds. Runway’s Product Ad Recipe charges a fixed 216-credit opening block and 40 credits for each additional second, so extending a shot adds cost even when the extra footage is only a few seconds.
Model or recipe
Different models can have different rates and different strengths. A recipe that assigns a suitable model to each step can reduce retries caused by asking one model to solve every task. Runway specifically describes its workflow as choosing the right model per step rather than paying a diffusion model to fail at label rendering.
Audio and reference inputs
Audio generation, voice, sound design, image references, and product assets may be priced separately or bundled, depending on the provider. The cited provider material does not state additional rates for these inputs, so treat them as a pricing question to verify rather than assuming they are free.
What is the cheapest way to make a product ad with AI?
The lowest price per render is not always the cheapest route to approval. A staged workflow limits the amount of expensive work performed before the product identity and composition are accepted.
- Prepare an isolated product reference. Use a clean image with the product separated from distracting background elements. Keep the approved reference version and its filename in the shot log.
- Generate and approve a key frame. Check label spelling, shape, color, material, perspective, and the amount of visible product before requesting motion. Rejecting a still is cheaper and faster than rejecting a full clip.
- Draft at lower resolution. Use a lower-cost resolution to test framing, camera direction, timing, and interaction. Move to delivery resolution only after the visual plan works.
- Animate the approved frame. Change one variable at a time where possible. If the camera move fails, preserve the approved product reference instead of rewriting the entire prompt.
- Use a fixed-price recipe when it fits. A recipe with known credit blocks makes the upper bound of a shot easier to estimate than a chain of unpriced experimental steps.
- Render delivery versions last. Do not create multiple high-resolution, long-duration variants until the master shot has passed visual and brand review.
This sequence does not eliminate retries. It moves them to cheaper stages and prevents a bad key frame from multiplying into several full-video attempts.

How should you retry a job without paying twice?
Distinguish a visual failure from a transport failure. If the provider returns a completed but unwanted clip, decide whether the content itself needs a new prompt. If your request times out and you cannot tell whether the provider accepted it, sending the same create request again can produce two billable jobs unless the API supports idempotency.
Use an idempotency key for uncertain requests
Generate a unique key for the intended job and send it with the create request. If the client times out, retry with the same key, not a new one. The provider can then return the original job or its status instead of starting a duplicate. Inworld AI documents this behavior explicitly: a timed-out create request can be retried with an idempotency key without starting or billing a second job.

Keep request and result records
Store the idempotency key, request ID, timestamp, input references, parameters, and provider status. When a refund is expected, record the failure code and check the credit balance later; Adobe notes that refunds for long video jobs can occasionally take up to 24 hours.
Do not blindly retry budget failures
A budget-exhausted status may indicate that the provider completed part of the workflow and charged for it. Luma documents partial charging for budget_exhausted, so first inspect the job status and remaining budget. Automatic retries should be limited to errors your contract identifies as non-billable.
What should a provider comparison include?
A price-per-second chart is only the first filter. Before adopting a service for repeated product work, ask these questions in writing:
- What is the credit or dollar cost for each resolution and duration?
- Are audio, image references, upscaling, or downstream workflow steps charged separately?
- Is a failed, moderated, cancelled, or budget-exhausted job refunded automatically?
- How long can a refund take, and how is it shown in billing records?
- Does the API support idempotency keys for create requests and provide stable request IDs?
- Can a recipe or staged workflow validate a key frame before launching a full-resolution video?
Run a small controlled trial using the same product reference and shot brief across candidates. Count both successful and rejected outputs, but label the result as your organization’s observation rather than an industry benchmark. The available provider documentation does not establish a universal retry rate or average time to approval.
What can current pricing evidence not tell you?
Provider examples establish rates and refund policies, not the average number of attempts required by every product category. There is no published industry-wide retry rate, average time-to-approval figure, or carbon-cost measure in the cited material. Those gaps matter when comparing an apparently cheap model with a workflow that produces fewer usable shots.
Teams can close the operational gap by measuring their own funnel: attempts per approved shot, rejection reason, resolution at rejection, time in review, refunded credits, and duplicate requests prevented by idempotency. Over several campaigns, that history is more useful for budgeting than a headline render price alone.

How do you manage an approval budget in practice?
Set a spending boundary for each stage rather than one limit for an entire campaign. For example, allocate a small exploratory allowance for key frames, a separate allowance for low-resolution motion drafts, and a final allowance for delivery renders. Stop and review when a stage exceeds its expected attempts instead of allowing an automatic loop to continue.
Assign a single rejection reason to every discarded output—identity, label, geometry, interaction, camera, or brand styling. The category tells you whether to change the reference, the prompt, the model, or the shot design. It also prevents a team from paying for the same kind of failed correction repeatedly.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The operational target is simple: reduce the cost and time required to obtain one approved asset. A provider’s nominal generation price remains useful, but it is only one line in that calculation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I always produce the final ad at the lowest resolution available?
No. Lower resolution is useful for composition and motion tests, but delivery requirements may demand a higher setting. Promote a shot only after its framing and product behavior are approved, then render the required master once.
What billing evidence should I request from an AI video provider?
Ask for per-job usage records that show duration, resolution, status, refunds, and request identifiers. A balance change without a job-level record makes it difficult to distinguish a legitimate render from a duplicate or a delayed refund.
How can a small team estimate retry risk before filming a campaign?
Create a short pilot using the actual product reference, label style, and camera moves planned for the campaign. Track rejected outputs by cause and use that observed distribution to set a stage budget; do not substitute a generic success-rate claim.
Does a successful generation that the client rejects qualify for a refund?
Usually not automatically. Provider refund language generally concerns technical failures, cancellations, or unsuccessful jobs, while a visually valid clip that misses a creative brief may still be billable. Confirm the distinction in the service terms before promising clients that rejected creative will be credited back.
