AI infrastructure spending is already a major investment cycle, spanning data centres, chips, networking, electricity, cooling, storage, and construction. The International Energy Agency (IEA) says five large technology companies spent more than USD 400 billion in capital expenditure in 2025 and expected that spending to rise by a further 75% in 2026. The investment is supporting construction and equipment demand now; whether it delivers lasting productivity and broad economic growth depends on how effectively businesses adopt AI—and whether power, skills, and other complementary resources can keep pace.

How much is being spent on AI infrastructure?

The investment is measured in hundreds of billions of dollars, but not every headline figure means the same thing. Some figures cover data centres; others cover capital expenditure by large technology companies, which is broader than spending exclusively on AI. Treat them as indicators of the scale and speed of the buildout, not as directly interchangeable totals.

Measure Reported figure What it covers
Capital expenditure by five large technology companies More than USD 400 billion in 2025; a further 75% increase was expected in 2026 IEA figures reported in 2026. This is company capital expenditure, not a global total of AI-only spending.
Global data-centre investment About USD 500 billion in 2024 IEA estimate reported in 2025.
Global data-centre electricity use 415 TWh, about 1.5% of world electricity in 2024 IEA estimate reported in 2025.
Contribution to US GDP growth 0.5 percentage point in 2025 IMF estimate, reported in 2026, of the contribution from AI-related technology investment.

These figures describe different parts of the cycle and different years. Capital expenditure can fund a broad range of technology assets, while data-centre investment is a facility-focused measure; neither should be presented as a precise tally of all money spent on AI infrastructure worldwide. The GDP estimate is also a contribution attributed to AI-related technology investment, not a claim that infrastructure alone generated all of that growth.

What counts as AI infrastructure?

The visible building is only one layer. AI services require computing equipment and the systems that move, store, cool, and power data. Construction and electrical work create demand during deployment; operating the facilities requires ongoing access to energy and a reliable supply of specialized equipment.

  • Facilities: data-centre buildings and the construction work needed to bring them online.
  • Computing and supporting equipment: advanced chips, high-bandwidth memory, storage, and networking.
  • Operations: electricity, cooling, and the grid connections that allow facilities to operate.
  • Complementary business investment: software, usable data, worker skills, and organizational changes that help firms apply AI.

The last category is important to the economic outcome even though it is not the same thing as a server or a power connection. A facility can expand the supply of computing capacity, but firms still need ways to use that capacity in real work.

How does AI infrastructure spending affect economic growth?

It can support growth through three channels: immediate demand for construction and equipment, capital deepening that gives workers more or better tools, and productivity gains when businesses use AI effectively. These channels operate on different timelines, so high investment does not automatically mean that every company or worker experiences a gain at once.

1. Construction and equipment demand

Building or expanding data centres brings demand for facilities, electrical systems, chips, networking, storage, and other equipment. This spending can contribute to economic activity before AI tools have raised productivity in a customer-facing business. The employment and income effects are distributed across the supply chain; the headline investment total does not reveal how many jobs are created, where they are located, or how long they last.

2. Capital deepening

Capital deepening means workers have more capital or better tools available to support their work. AI infrastructure can enable firms to use computing services that would otherwise be unavailable or constrained. But infrastructure is an input, not a productivity result: a business may need new software, clean and accessible data, staff training, and redesigned processes before additional computing capacity changes output.

3. Productivity and broader growth

If AI helps a business produce more or complete tasks more efficiently, productivity can rise. If those gains spread across businesses and sectors, they can support broader economic growth. The chain from investment to economy-wide benefit is not automatic: adoption, effective implementation, and the distribution of gains all matter.

The IMF’s estimate that AI-related technology investment added 0.5 percentage point to US GDP growth in 2025 is evidence that investment can matter at the national level. It does not isolate data centres from all other AI-related technology investment or establish that the same contribution will recur. A one-year contribution should not be read as a permanent growth rate.

Does AI infrastructure raise productivity?

Early evidence points to meaningful productivity gains in some settings, but the results are uneven. Studies measure different things: productivity across a firm is not the same as speed on a particular task, and a task-level improvement does not by itself show an increase in economy-wide output.

Evidence Finding How to interpret it
European Investment Bank (EIB), 2026 An estimated 4% labor-productivity increase associated with AI adoption in a study of more than 12,000 European and US firms An association across firms, attributed to capital deepening in the study; it is not a guaranteed result for every adopter or proof of short-run job losses.
International Labour Organization (ILO), 2026 Typical task-level productivity gains summarized as ranging from 10% to 70% Task-level gains vary and do not translate uniformly into firm-wide or macroeconomic gains.

The difference in scale is crucial. A worker completing one task faster may have more time for other work, but that is not automatically a proportional increase in the firm’s total output. Workflow bottlenecks, quality checks, demand for the finished product, and the time needed to integrate AI can affect what happens next.

The EIB result connects higher labor productivity with capital deepening rather than short-run job losses. That is a useful distinction: productivity can improve because a worker has more effective tools, without the study establishing that fewer workers are required. The finding is an estimate associated with adoption across the studied firms, not a forecast for every country, industry, or implementation.

The ILO’s task-level range likewise needs careful reading. It describes productivity improvements on tasks, not a universal percentage increase in wages, profits, firm output, or GDP. The ILO’s broader assessment is that generative AI is more likely in the near term to augment and speed some tasks within occupations than to automate whole occupations.

Will data-centre investment create or destroy jobs?

It can support employment in construction and equipment supply while also changing the tasks businesses need people to do. Current US evidence does not show a broad collapse in job postings at firms or in industries with higher AI adoption, but that does not rule out weaker hiring or displacement in particular occupations.

The Federal Reserve found no evidence that firms or industries with higher AI adoption reduced total job postings through the study period. Its authors described the evidence available in their 2026 note as “consistent with a buildout phase rather than the onset of broad-based displacement.” This is a finding about job postings in the period studied—not proof that no worker has been displaced, that postings measure every form of employment, or that future effects will be the same.

Why job effects can differ

  • Construction versus operation: Building capacity creates a different pattern of work from running a completed facility. A large investment total does not tell readers how many jobs are permanent.
  • Tasks versus occupations: AI may change some duties within a job without replacing the whole occupation. The balance between task support and task substitution can differ by role.
  • Hiring versus current employment: An employer may reduce recruitment for a particular role without making immediate layoffs. Conversely, stable aggregate postings can coexist with pressure in specific occupations.
  • Skills and location: Workers and regions able to connect new infrastructure to useful services may benefit differently from those without access to power, equipment, or training.

The near-term evidence therefore supports neither “AI infrastructure creates jobs for everyone” nor “AI infrastructure is already eliminating jobs across the economy.” It points to a buildout whose employment effects are mixed, occupation-specific, and still developing.

Will AI boost GDP or just increase electricity demand?

It can do both: investment and adoption may support economic output while data centres add to electricity demand. The relevant question is not whether power use rises, but whether the resulting computing capacity is used productively, what it costs to supply, and how infrastructure effects are managed locally.

The IEA reports that data centres used 415 TWh in 2024, about 1.5% of global electricity. That global share is relatively small, but it does not show where the electricity is consumed. A facility’s demand is concentrated in a particular place, so its effects on a local grid can be much more visible than the global percentage suggests.

The IMF reported in 2025 that electricity represents 13–15% of data-centre companies’ total costs and cited a possible 1,500 TWh of AI-driven global electricity demand by 2030. The 2030 figure is a possibility, not a settled outcome. Actual demand depends on how much infrastructure is built and used, how efficiently it operates, and the path of AI adoption.

Why local impacts can be sharper than global totals

Data-centre development can create pressure around grid connections, electricity prices, emissions, water use, and permitting. These are local planning questions as much as global energy questions. A national or worldwide electricity share alone cannot establish whether a particular community has enough power capacity, who pays for upgrades, or how facility operations affect local water resources.

Grid availability is also a deployment constraint. The IEA identifies rising demand for grid connections, advanced chips, high-bandwidth memory, storage, and capital. When any of these inputs is difficult to obtain, projects may face delays or higher costs. That can slow the conversion of planned investment into usable computing capacity.

Who pays for the power and grid upgrades?

The sources summarized here identify the costs and pressures, but do not establish a single payer or a universal cost-sharing rule. Electricity is a material cost for data-centre companies, while grid upgrades, price effects, and permitting are handled in local contexts that can differ from one project and jurisdiction to another.

That uncertainty matters to residents and businesses near proposed facilities. Whether a project’s demand is met through existing capacity or requires new connections and upgrades can affect its local consequences. The available figures do not establish how those costs are divided between a data-centre operator, utility customers, or public bodies in every location.

For a community evaluating a proposal, the practical issues are specific: how much additional power the project requires, whether the grid can serve it, what new infrastructure is needed, and how the costs and environmental effects are addressed. The global data-centre electricity share cannot answer those project-level questions by itself.

Why might some countries or workers benefit less?

Infrastructure and skills affect who can participate in the AI economy. The ILO warns that low-income countries may capture fewer benefits because infrastructure and skills are limited. That means the same technology can have different economic effects depending on whether businesses and workers can access the computing, connectivity, and expertise needed to use it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Distribution also matters within countries. Firms with useful data, compatible software, trained staff, and workable processes may be better positioned to turn infrastructure into productivity gains. Where those complements are absent, new computing capacity may have less effect on day-to-day output. Investment can therefore expand the potential for productivity without ensuring that benefits are shared evenly.

What should businesses and policymakers watch?

Investment totals alone are a poor test of whether the buildout is delivering durable economic value. A useful assessment follows the path from spending to usable capacity, adoption, productivity, and effects on workers and communities.

For businesses considering AI adoption

  • Measure outcomes at more than one level: Separate task speed from firm-wide output, quality, and costs. A faster task is not automatically a better business result.
  • Budget for complementary investment: Consider the software, data, training, and process changes needed alongside computing capacity.
  • Track how work changes: Monitor task allocation, hiring, training needs, and worker experience instead of treating productivity as a headcount target.
  • Check operational constraints: Power availability, equipment supply, and capital costs can influence whether planned infrastructure becomes usable capacity.

For policymakers and communities

  • Look beyond global averages: Assess local grid capacity, electricity-price pressure, emissions, water use, and permitting needs for individual projects.
  • Ask how gains are distributed: Aggregate productivity or investment figures do not reveal who captures the benefits or bears local costs.
  • Support the complements: Skills and infrastructure shape whether countries, firms, and workers can participate in adoption.
  • Keep uncertainty visible: Early productivity and labor evidence should be treated as evidence about the period and populations studied, not as a complete forecast of long-run effects.

What is the most reasonable overall assessment?

AI infrastructure spending is large and accelerating, and it is already relevant to investment, electricity demand, and economic growth. Early firm and task-level evidence suggests that AI can improve productivity, while current US job-posting evidence does not show broad-based hiring collapse associated with higher adoption. None of those findings establishes that gains will be automatic, evenly distributed, or sufficient to offset every local cost.

The decisive test is what happens after capacity is built: whether firms can use it well, whether power and equipment constraints can be managed, and whether workers and communities share in the results. Infrastructure expands what is possible; complementary investment and effective adoption determine how much of that possibility becomes lasting economic benefit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does data-centre electricity use mean AI is responsible for all data-centre power demand?

No. The IEA figure cited here is for global data centres, not a measurement of electricity used only for AI. The IMF’s 2030 figure is specifically described as possible AI-driven demand, so the two measures should not be treated as identical.

Is the 2030 electricity-demand figure guaranteed?

No. The IMF describes 1,500 TWh as a possible level of AI-driven global electricity consumption by 2030, not a guaranteed forecast. The actual outcome depends on infrastructure deployment, utilization, efficiency, and adoption.

Does a productivity gain mean workers will earn more?

Not by itself. The EIB and ILO findings concern productivity measures, not a guaranteed wage increase; how gains affect pay depends on how firms and labor markets distribute the value created.

Can smaller or lower-income countries benefit from AI infrastructure?

They can, but the ILO warns that limited infrastructure and skills may reduce the benefits they capture. Access to computing capacity alone may not be enough without the capabilities needed to apply it.
