If an AI detector flags work you wrote yourself, do not panic, rewrite the assignment, or upload it to a parade of competing checkers. A detector result is a prompt for review, not proof of misconduct. Preserve the submitted file and genuine records, ask which passages and other evidence prompted the concern, explain how you researched and drafted the work, and follow your institution’s actual academic-integrity procedure. Turnitin says its model can misidentify human writing and should not by itself support adverse action; Australia’s Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) likewise says an AI score alone is insufficient for an allegation.
The strongest response is calm and specific: show contemporaneous drafts, notes, outlines, source records, and editor history when you have them; describe any permitted AI assistance honestly; and request the written allegation and deadline if the matter becomes formal.

What should you do immediately after an AI detector flags your paper?
Save the work and its existing history before replying. Then make a short, truthful timeline and request particulars rather than arguing about a percentage in the abstract.
- Preserve the submitted version. Download or duplicate the exact file that was submitted, retaining its original filename and metadata where possible. Do not overwrite the document’s history while “cleaning it up.” Keep the learning-system submission receipt, attached files, and relevant messages.
- Collect authentic process records. Gather dated drafts, outlines, handwritten or digital notes, annotated sources, citation-development records, feedback, and Google Docs, Microsoft Word, or learning-system revision history that already exists. If you drafted offline or have little history, say that plainly; use the notes and sources you genuinely have.
- Write a compact chronology. Note when you chose the topic, found sources, formed the thesis, drafted sections, received feedback, revised, and submitted. Tie each event to an existing artifact instead of reconstructing dates from memory.
- Ask what prompted the concern. Request the highlighted passages, the detector report if it can be shared, and any evidence beyond the detector. Offer to explain your argument, source choices, quotations, and revisions in a meeting.
- Check the assignment rule. Read the syllabus, assignment sheet, and academic-integrity policy. Determine whether brainstorming, grammar assistance, translation, citation tools, or other AI-enabled help was permitted and whether acknowledgment was required.
- Record deadlines. If you receive a formal notice, preserve the notice and identify the response or appeal deadline stated by your institution. Do not rely on a deadline from another university.
These steps do not guarantee exoneration. They make the account of how the work developed easier to examine and prevent an avoidable mistake, such as deleting the only version history you had.

Is an AI detector score proof that a student cheated?
No. A detector score is an automated indicator that qualifying text resembles patterns in the model’s training and evaluation data; it is not a probability that the student used AI and is not, by itself, a misconduct finding.
Turnitin separates its AI-writing percentage from its similarity score. Similarity concerns matching text found in comparison databases. The AI percentage concerns qualifying prose identified by Turnitin’s AI model. Neither number independently establishes authorship, intent, or a breach of a particular assignment rule. A high percentage should lead to human review, not an automatic verdict.
TEQSA gives a useful hypothetical illustration: if a system had a 1% false-positive rate, one out of 100 wholly human-written assignments could be flagged. That is an example, not a measured rate for a vendor, course, or campus, and it must not be presented as one.
What do Turnitin’s AI-writing numbers actually mean?
Turnitin’s own guide, checked in 2026, limits what can be inferred from its display. These specifications apply to Turnitin and should not be generalized to every detector.
| Turnitin detail | What it means | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| 1%–19% result displayed with an asterisk | Turnitin masks the precise number in this range because false positives are elevated at low scores. | It is not a 1%–19% probability that the student used AI, nor a measured false-accusation rate. |
| 20% reporting threshold | Results at or above that threshold can show a numerical AI-writing percentage in the report. | A visible number is not a finding of misconduct. |
| At least 300 words of long-form prose | Turnitin specifies this minimum for an AI Writing Report. | Short submissions automatically receive a reliable authorship judgment. |
| Poetry, code, tables and other unconventional formats | They are not assessed in the same reliable way as qualifying prose. | A detector’s treatment of ordinary prose can be transferred to every format. |
| English-model release dated October 14, 2026 | Previously generated reports do not update retroactively when the model changes. | Running a later version tells you what an older report should have said, or revises the original report automatically. |
Turnitin’s vendor guidance states that false positives—incorrectly flagging human-written text as AI-generated—are possible in AI models. San José State University’s student-conduct guidance expresses the practical implication as “AI detection ≠ proof by itself.” That is the university’s policy position, not a nationwide legal rule.

Which records are most useful when explaining how you wrote?
Evidence is more persuasive when it was created during the assignment, shows development, and can be opened in its original environment. Each artifact answers a different question; none is guaranteed to settle a case.
Recommended Free Tools
| Artifact | What it can demonstrate | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Submitted file and submission receipt | What was actually turned in and when. | They show the final state, not every drafting step. |
| Dated drafts or version history | How wording, structure, and argument changed over time. | A sparse history may reflect offline drafting; a history can also be incomplete. |
| Outlines and research notes | Topic selection, thesis development, and the path from question to argument. | Notes are useful only if they are genuine and connected to the submitted work. |
| Annotated sources and citation records | Which sources you read, what you extracted, and how citations were built. | A bibliography alone does not prove that you understood or used every source. |
| Instructor or peer feedback | That ideas and prose existed before later revisions. | Feedback can explain a change without proving who wrote the original passage. |
| Metadata and editor history | Creation, revision, and collaboration events stored by the original application. | Metadata can be stripped, altered by normal file transfers, or unavailable for offline work. |
Do not create backdated drafts, alter timestamps, or manufacture a neat sequence after the fact. A candid explanation of missing history is safer than an artificial record that creates a new integrity issue.
What should your first message to the instructor say?
Keep the first reply professional and focused on understanding the concern. Ask for the passages and evidence, state what records you actually have, and request the applicable procedure.
Adaptable example:
Thank you for letting me know about the concern with my assignment. I wrote the work myself [describe your actual contribution] and would like to understand which passages and evidence raised the concern. I can share my existing drafts, notes, and revision history [only if available] and explain how I developed the argument and used my sources. Could we arrange a time to discuss this, and could you tell me the applicable course or academic-integrity procedure?
Replace the bracketed language with facts. If you used permitted brainstorming, grammar help, translation, or another tool, describe it accurately and explain how the assignment rules treated that use. Avoid an overbroad statement such as “I used no AI” if you used a permitted feature or assistance that the policy requires you to disclose.

How should you prepare for a meeting about the flag?
Bring a compact chronology and original artifacts, then be ready to discuss the substance of the paper rather than treating the meeting as a contest between software scores.
- Organize a small packet. Put the submitted file, key drafts, outline, notes, annotated sources, feedback, and a one-page timeline in a logical order. Keep originals unchanged and provide copies if requested.
- Rehearse the argument, not a script. Be able to state the thesis, explain why you selected major sources, distinguish quotations from your own analysis, and describe significant revisions.
- Ask precise questions. Which passages are at issue? What evidence besides the detector is being considered? Is this an exploratory conversation, a formal allegation, or a pending sanction? Which policy and deadline apply?
- Correct mistakes directly. If a citation is wrong, a source was misunderstood, or you used assistance outside the rule, acknowledge it and explain the circumstances. Blaming software or bluffing about a document’s history can damage credibility.
- Take notes. Record the claims made, documents requested, next steps, and any stated deadline. Follow up with a concise written summary if appropriate.
A polished style, an abrupt change in voice, missing history, or an inability to explain a source may prompt questions. None of those facts alone proves AI authorship; they are reasons for a fuller conversation.
What if the school makes a formal allegation?
Stop treating the matter as an informal detector dispute and follow the institution’s stated process. Obtain the written allegation, the applicable student handbook or code, the response route, and the actual deadline in your notice.
- Preserve correspondence. Keep the original email or portal notice, attachments, report, and your replies in one folder.
- Identify the decision stage. A lecturer’s request for a conversation is different from a formal referral or an imposed sanction. Ask which stage you are in.
- Use the stated review route. Submit evidence in the format and by the date the institution specifies. Do not assume another university’s hearing or appeal rules apply to you.
- Seek permitted support. If the procedure allows a student adviser, representative, or support person, ask how to arrange one. A campus advice service can help you understand the local process without replacing your own account.
- Keep the focus on the allegation. Explain the assignment rule, your actual process, and the specific passages at issue. Do not promise that one artifact will automatically clear you.
San José State University publishes its own conduct procedure, including how a student can present evidence and be heard. Penn State has separately published a position that detector scores should not stand alone. Those examples demonstrate institutional variation; they do not establish a universal number of days, evidentiary standard, or appeal right.

Can you use another detector to disprove the first one?
Usually, no. A second checker can produce a different guess, but disagreement between models does not establish who authored the work. Presenting a “clean” score as conclusive may shift the discussion toward competing software instead of your genuine process evidence.

Avoid uploading coursework to free third-party services without checking their privacy, retention, intellectual-property, and academic-integrity implications. The service may store or reuse submitted text, and your institution may prohibit unapproved sharing of assessed work. Ask the instructor or policy office whether a report can be reviewed directly instead.
Do not use “humanizers,” paraphrasers, or deliberate typo insertion to chase a lower score. They can change meaning, introduce plagiarism or citation problems, and make an honest explanation harder. If the original work is yours, preserve it and explain it; if assistance was used, disclose it according to the assignment rule.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What if you have no version history because you drafted offline?
Say so plainly. Offline drafting does not prove misconduct, and the absence of cloud history does not prove authorship either. Use the authentic evidence available: handwritten notes, printed source annotations, library records, local file dates, saved outlines, feedback, and your ability to explain the argument and revisions.

- Keep the assignment sheet and policy beside your working notes.
- Save meaningful drafts with dates or use the original editor’s version history without overwriting earlier versions.
- Record why a source matters, not only its URL or title.
- Separate quotations, paraphrases, and your own analysis in notes.
- Keep feedback and revision decisions with the relevant draft.
- Ask before using a tool whose role is unclear, especially for rewriting, translation, or generated text.
- Disclose permitted assistance in the form and wording your course requires.
These practices document development for a human reviewer. They are not a guarantee against a false flag and should not be adopted merely to manufacture evidence.
How do report access and detector policies vary by institution?
Students cannot assume they will see the same report or receive the same review at every school. Turnitin says a student can open an AI Writing Report if the instructor makes it available. The University of Melbourne says its students do not automatically see that indicator, although an instructor can share a PDF.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Ask for the report or highlighted passages rather than asserting that every student has dashboard access. Also ask which version of the assignment policy applies and whether the concern is being handled under a course process or a central academic-integrity procedure.
What should you avoid saying or doing?
- Do not claim that a detector score is a probability of cheating.
- Do not say that a single draft, oral explanation, clean detector result, or version history is conclusive proof.
- Do not erase, rename, or edit original records to make them look older or more complete.
- Do not promise that the instructor must accept your explanation or that a particular appeal outcome is guaranteed.
- Do not rely on another university’s deadline, burden of proof, or hearing format.
- Do not upload assessed work to an unknown checker or use a humanizer to manipulate scores.
- Do not turn an informal question into an accusation against the instructor; ask for the evidence and procedure in writing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a high AI detector percentage be wrong?
Yes. Turnitin explicitly acknowledges that false positives are possible, and its low-range display is masked because false positives are elevated there. A high number still calls for review of the work and its development; it is not a probability of AI use or a standalone misconduct finding.
Should I ask to see the Turnitin AI report?
Yes, request the report or the highlighted passages, but access depends on the instructor’s settings. Turnitin says students can open it when made available, while the University of Melbourne says its students do not automatically see the indicator and may receive a PDF from an instructor.
What happens if I used grammar or brainstorming AI that the assignment allowed?
Describe exactly what you used and for which task, then point to the assignment’s disclosure rule. Permitted assistance and acknowledgment requirements vary by course, so an accurate limited disclosure is safer than an absolute denial.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs an oral defense enough to clear an AI accusation?
No single oral explanation is guaranteed to settle a case. It can help you demonstrate understanding of the thesis, sources, quotations, and revisions, but institutions may also consider drafts, notes, policy language, and other evidence.
How long do I have to appeal an AI-misconduct decision?
There is no universal deadline. Use the date and procedure in your institution’s written notice; published timelines at one university cannot be applied automatically to another.
