Short answer: An AI-detector score is a screening signal, not proof that a student committed misconduct. A fair academic-integrity review starts with the exact AI-use rule for the assignment, checks the report’s limits and date, examines the student’s sources and writing process, looks for evidence both supporting and weakening the concern, hears the student’s explanation, and follows the institution’s procedure.

What an AI detector can—and cannot—tell you

Detection systems examine linguistic and structural patterns that their models associate with text generated or altered by large language models (LLMs). The output is an estimate about qualifying text, not a reconstruction of who wrote it, which tool was used, or whether a rule was broken.

A percentage is not the probability that a student cheated

In an AI Writing Report, a displayed percentage refers to the portion of qualifying text the vendor’s model estimates may have originated from an LLM. It is not a calibrated probability that the student used AI, and it is not a probability of misconduct. A student can violate a clearly stated rule without producing a high detector score, while an entirely human paper can receive a high score.

Turnitin’s current guidance describes its model as capable of misidentifying human-written, AI-generated and AI-paraphrased text. It says the report should not be the sole basis for adverse action. The report therefore answers a narrow triage question—whether the text contains patterns the model associates with AI—not the institutional question of whether a student breached a particular rule.

False positives and false negatives are both possible

TEQSA explains that detectors infer from language and structure and that accuracy can vary with text length, mixed authorship and human editing. “Humanisation” tools may also alter AI text enough to evade a detector. These limitations create two risks: accusing a student whose work is legitimate and overlooking prohibited assistance that the system does not recognize.

Short answers, formulaic disciplinary language, second-language writing, heavily edited drafts and text that combines a student’s prose with quoted or supplied material can all complicate interpretation. None of these features establishes authorship by itself. Conversely, polished prose, abrupt stylistic changes or an unusual vocabulary may prompt a useful question but cannot substitute for evidence about the student’s process.

Low scores are deliberately displayed differently

Turnitin’s current report guidance says scores from 1% through 19% are not shown as an exact percentage; the interface uses an asterisk to reduce possible misinterpretation. Turnitin also reports a higher incidence of false positives in that 0%–19% range. This is an interface and risk-management choice, not an accuracy benchmark. Do not turn the display threshold into a claim that a paper below it is authentic or that a paper above it is misconduct.

Can Turnitin tell if a student used AI?

It can flag text that its model estimates is likely to have originated from an LLM, but it cannot establish intent, the identity of the writer, the extent of assistance or whether the assistance was allowed. A report is best treated as one prompt for inquiry, where institutional policy permits its use.

Read the report in its technical context

Record the product, report date, language, model or release context when available, and the kind of text the report assessed. Preserve the report rather than relying on a screenshot or memory. A score generated under one model may not be comparable with a later score generated under another.

Model updates can change the apparent result

Turnitin’s release notes date an English-model update to October 14, 2026 and state that reports created before the update are not retroactively changed. A resubmission is required to see a score under the updated model. This means an older report and a newly generated report may differ without any change to the student’s document. The release note is a vendor statement about its service, not independent validation of accuracy.

What the report does not show

  • It does not prove that a named AI system produced the text.
  • It does not show whether a student used AI for brainstorming, translation, editing or another permitted step.
  • It does not establish that the student’s use violated the assignment rule.
  • It does not replace a conversation, source verification or the institution’s authorized decision process.

Can an AI detector prove academic misconduct?

No. A detector result alone cannot prove a breach of an academic-integrity rule. TEQSA states: “The ‘AI score’ alone is insufficient to bring an allegation of misconduct.” That guidance applies in its Australian regulatory context; other institutions and jurisdictions may use different standards and procedures.

Dimension Detector-centered response Evidence-based review
What the information means A tool flags text patterns its model associates with AI-generated or altered writing. A collection of contextual evidence is assessed against the communicated rule and institutional standard.
Error handling False positives and false negatives are possible; model behavior can vary and change. Corroborating and disconfirming evidence are considered without treating a score or stylistic clue as decisive.
Student treatment A score-only response can turn an uncertain indicator into an accusation. The concern is explained, the student’s account is heard, and the applicable procedure is followed.
Prevention Detection happens after submission and does not make an assessment fair by itself. Clear AI-use boundaries and process-aware tasks make expectations and learning more visible.
Proper role Triage or a prompt for further inquiry, where locally approved. Decision-making under institutional policy, supported by relevant evidence and human judgment.

Cornell’s committee report currently discourages automatic detection algorithms as evidence for academic-integrity violations because of their unreliability and inability to provide definitive evidence. UNSW, by contrast, authorizes a particular product for a limited institutional purpose while stating that a flag is only a prompt for investigation. These policies are not universal mandates. Their shared caution is that detector output alone is not a conclusive finding.

What should a teacher do if Turnitin flags a student?

Use a staged review. The following sequence synthesizes guidance from TEQSA, Turnitin, UNSW and related institutional recommendations; local policy, privacy rules and applicable law control the actual procedure.

1. Establish the rule that applied to this assessment

Locate the assignment sheet, syllabus, learning-platform notice and institutional policy in force when the work was produced. Identify whether AI was prohibited, allowed for limited steps, allowed with attribution, or required for part of the task. Do not infer a violation from assistance that the instructions permitted or failed to define clearly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Preserve and contextualize the detector result

Save the report and note its date, language, model or release information, and the percentage or asterisk exactly as displayed. Describe the result accurately as an estimate about qualifying text. Do not rewrite “35% likely AI-generated text” as “35% probability the student cheated.” If the document was reported before October 14, 2026, consider whether a later English-model update could affect a resubmitted result.

3. Verify the paper’s specific claims and references

Check every cited publication, quotation, page reference and important factual claim. A reference that looks unusual may be genuine; a fabricated citation is a separate, document-specific concern that still requires careful verification. Source checking can corroborate or weaken a suspicion, but it does not turn a detector score into proof.

4. Seek legitimate process evidence

Where collection was lawful, disclosed and proportionate, examine drafts, notes, outlines, version history, writing-platform records or staged submissions. TEQSA identifies these records as ways to understand how an assessment was produced. They are evidence to interpret, not automatic proof: a student may draft offline, collaborate appropriately or lose a file, and a polished final document may have a legitimate explanation.

5. Look for evidence on both sides

Write down what would support the concern and what would weaken it before deciding what to ask next. This step counters confirmation bias. Evidence against the allegation might include dated drafts that develop the argument, accurate source notes, documented permitted editing or a consistent explanation of the writing process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Invite the student to explain the work

Use open, non-accusatory questions: How did you choose these sources? What changed between your outline and final draft? Which tools did you use for editing or translation? Why did you make this argument? Can you explain the quotation or calculation in your own words? UNSW recommends discussion where reasonable suspicion exists and cautions that generic prose, stylistic differences and other listed signs are not definitive proof.

Give the student the relevant concern and a reasonable opportunity to respond under the institution’s rules. Do not demand that a student reproduce an entire paper under surveillance unless the authorized procedure specifically allows it and appropriate safeguards are in place.

7. Apply the institutional process

Document the rule, evidence considered, student’s response and reasoning. Use the institution’s defined standard and authorized decision-maker. In the Australian context, TEQSA describes “balance of probabilities” as a substantiation standard; do not generalize that standard to institutions or jurisdictions that use a different test. A teacher’s preliminary review should not silently become a final finding if policy assigns that role elsewhere.

What evidence is needed for an academic-integrity investigation?

There is no universal checklist or single score that meets every institution’s standard. A defensible case connects the evidence to a clearly communicated rule and explains why the total record is more persuasive than competing explanations.

Evidence about the rule

  • The assignment’s AI-use instructions and permitted-use categories.
  • The version of the syllabus or policy in force at submission.
  • Any required disclosure, citation or appendix describing AI assistance.

Evidence about the submitted work

  • Verified or unverified references, quotations and factual claims.
  • Substantive contradictions, invented sources or content that cannot be explained by ordinary error.
  • Consistency between the paper’s argument, data, cited literature and assignment prompt.

Evidence about production and authorship

  • Drafts, notes, outlines, revision history and staged submissions, when legitimately available.
  • Writing-platform or learning-management records collected under applicable privacy and retention rules.
  • A student’s explanation of sources, decisions, revisions and tool use.

Evidence that cuts the other way

Disconfirming evidence deserves the same attention as incriminating evidence. A detector’s flag may be weakened by a coherent sequence of drafts, accurate source knowledge, permitted editing or a documented accessibility accommodation. Conversely, a fabricated citation may remain significant even if the detector score is low. The point is not to count clues mechanically but to test competing explanations against the rule and the full record.

How can teachers assess student work fairly when AI is allowed?

Fair assessment begins before submission. Students need written, course-specific instructions that distinguish prohibited use from permitted assistance and explain how to acknowledge it.

State permitted use in operational terms

UNSW describes categories ranging from no AI assistance, through simple editing and planning, to use with attribution, software-based assessment and situations where AI is not applicable. A useful policy tells students which category applies, what evidence of use to retain, and whether an AI-generated passage may appear in the final submission. “Use AI responsibly” is too vague to support consistent enforcement.

Make the process part of the assessment

UCL recommends progressive or reflective portfolios, drafts and notes, synthesis and critical analysis, case application, and oral assessment where appropriate. These designs assess judgment and development rather than only a polished endpoint. They do not guarantee detection or eliminate misconduct; they give students more legitimate ways to demonstrate learning and give reviewers more context if questions arise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assess AI use as a skill when it is part of the task

If the learning objective includes AI literacy, ask students to critique, compare and refine an AI-generated response, identify unsupported claims, document prompts and explain revisions. Grading the student’s verification and reasoning is more defensible than assuming that any machine-assisted text is dishonest.

Collect only useful process data

Writing-process platforms can record aspects of drafting activity, but institutions must evaluate privacy, security, accessibility, retention, procurement and student notice before adopting them. A record is valuable only when its limits and context are understood; surveillance that students did not reasonably expect can undermine trust and create new fairness problems.

How institutional policies differ

Institutions are making different choices about detection tools. Cornell’s report discourages automatic detection for violation findings. UNSW permits a specified product for a limited purpose but frames a flag as a prompt for investigation. TEQSA emphasizes that an AI score alone is insufficient and that substantiation requires sufficient evidence under the relevant institutional standard. These positions illustrate policy variation rather than a universal legal rule.

Before using any detector, confirm whether your institution has approved it, what data may be uploaded, who may see reports, how long records are retained, and what appeal rights students have. A tool’s commercial availability does not make its use procedurally fair or institutionally authorized.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision framework

Use the following questions in order, recording concise answers:

  1. Rule: What exactly did the assignment permit, require or prohibit?
  2. Signal: What did the detector report, on what date, language and model context?
  3. Document: Which references, quotations or factual claims can be independently verified?
  4. Process: What legitimate drafts, notes, revisions or platform records exist?
  5. Alternatives: What evidence supports an innocent or permitted explanation?
  6. Conversation: Has the student had a fair opportunity to explain the work?
  7. Procedure: Who is authorized to decide, and what standard and appeal route apply?

If the only answer is a detector percentage, the record is not ready for an adverse finding. If multiple independent evidence streams converge and the student’s explanation cannot account for them, refer the matter through the authorized process rather than issuing an improvised penalty.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating the score as a confession: it is an estimate about text patterns, not an admission.
  • Comparing scores across time without model context: updates can change reports, and old reports are not necessarily recalculated.
  • Using style as authorship proof: generic prose, a sudden change in tone or polished language are leads only.
  • Ignoring permitted uses: brainstorming, translation or editing may be allowed under the assignment’s rules.
  • Checking only incriminating evidence: confirmation bias can distort an investigation.
  • Skipping the student’s explanation: process knowledge and source decisions may clarify a disputed paper.
  • Publishing a detector ranking: no independently validated, current benchmark supports declaring one named detector most accurate for every language, assignment length, institution or student population.
