AI cybersecurity platforms are not one category of product. Some systems detect, investigate, prioritize, and contain threats with little or no intervention; others use AI to gather evidence and recommend actions while an analyst approves containment. Managed detection and response (MDR) services often sit between those extremes, combining automated triage with people who hunt threats, add business context, and own escalation decisions.
The practical comparison is therefore not whether a vendor says it uses AI. Compare the platform’s authority boundary, human accountability, environment coverage, response scope, audit trail, and evidence behind performance claims. The examples below describe vendor-stated operating models, not independently tested rankings.

What is an AI cybersecurity platform?
An AI cybersecurity platform applies machine learning, automation, or agentic software to security operations such as alert detection, investigation, prioritization, threat hunting, containment, and remediation. The same product may automate one stage while requiring a person at another. A system can investigate an alert autonomously yet still require an analyst to isolate a device, disable an account, or delete persistence.
That distinction matters because “automated” can describe very different authority levels. A detector that enriches an alert is not equivalent to a service that can change firewall rules or quarantine production servers. Buyers should document each action the system can perform, the permissions it needs, and the approval path for high-impact decisions.

How much autonomy does an AI security platform really have?
Think of products as a spectrum rather than an automated-versus-manual binary. The useful question is what happens after the platform sees suspicious activity.
| Operating level | Typical automated work | Human responsibility | Risk to examine |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alert automation | Collects telemetry, deduplicates alerts, enriches indicators, and assigns severity. | Analysts investigate and decide every response. | High alert volume can still overwhelm a small team. |
| AI-assisted investigation | Correlates events, builds a timeline, summarizes evidence, and recommends a disposition. | Analysts validate context and approve actions. | Incorrect recommendations can anchor an analyst on the wrong explanation. |
| Supervised response | Executes pre-approved actions after a human confirmation or policy check. | People set policies, review evidence, and handle exceptions. | Broad permissions or poorly scoped policies can cause disruptive containment. |
| Autonomous response | Detects, investigates, prioritizes, and performs defined containment or remediation automatically. | People define guardrails, monitor outcomes, and manage complex incidents. | A false positive can trigger business-impacting action before review. |
| Human-led MDR | Automates triage and evidence gathering inside a staffed security operation. | Analysts and threat hunters interpret context, escalate, and own response decisions. | Coverage, staffing, escalation times, and contractual limits determine the real service. |
These levels can coexist. An organization might permit autonomous isolation of a known malicious workstation but require approval before disabling an executive account or changing a cloud access policy.
What is the difference between automated detection and human-led monitoring?
Automated detection is optimized for speed and consistency across large telemetry volumes. Human-led monitoring adds judgment about business criticality, attacker intent, legal or regulatory implications, and the safest recovery sequence.
| Question | Automation-first approach | Human-led or hybrid approach |
|---|---|---|
| Who reviews routine alerts? | Software classifies and may close or contain them according to policy. | Software triages; analysts validate priority and disposition. |
| Who interprets unusual context? | Models infer from available telemetry and learned patterns. | Analysts and hunters combine telemetry with environment and business knowledge. |
| Who decides on disruptive action? | A policy engine or autonomous agent may act within configured limits. | An analyst generally approves, performs, or directs the action. |
| What happens outside normal playbooks? | The system may defer, escalate, or take a conservative action. | People investigate novel behavior and coordinate incident response. |
| What is easiest to audit? | Machine actions can be logged consistently if the product records them. | There is a human decision trail in addition to automated evidence and actions. |
Human involvement does not mean the service is non-AI. Sophos describes its MDR as “AI-accelerated. Human-led,” while Huntress says AI is a force multiplier for its security operations center. In both descriptions, AI handles scale and speed while specialists provide interpretation and accountability.
How do major platform examples describe their operating models?
The following examples illustrate different positions on the autonomy spectrum. Their statements are vendor claims; the pages do not establish an independent comparison of detection accuracy, response quality, or total cost.
How does Sophos describe its MDR service?
Sophos describes an AI-accelerated SOC combined with security analysts, threat hunters, incident responders, and other specialists. Its positioning emphasizes 24/7 monitoring, human accountability, managed response, and integrations. Sophos also says its service supports more than 500 third-party technology integrations, a vendor-reported count that should be checked against the systems in your environment.

Sophos reports that 52% of MDR cases are resolved end-to-end by AI without human intervention and that the average time from alert to automated response is 89 seconds. These figures are Sophos claims accessed in 2026, not independently validated results or industry averages. Ask for the denominator, time period, case exclusions, and definition of “resolved” before using them in a business case.

How does Huntress describe its AI and SOC?
Huntress says AI agents correlate telemetry and accelerate investigations, while analysts and threat hunters interpret context, make risk-aware decisions, and take control of complex escalations. This is a hybrid model: software expands the team’s capacity, but people remain responsible for cases that require judgment or nonstandard response.
What does Microsoft Defender Experts MDR say it provides?
Microsoft describes an expert-led MDR service with proactive threat hunting. Its service operations use AI and agentic AI, and the offering includes managed response. Confirm which Microsoft and third-party data sources are covered, what response actions are included, and which actions require customer approval in the current service terms.
How does AISA handle automated incident response?
AISA describes a workflow that investigates alerts, assembles an evidence-backed case, and proposes a response. Its published answer to whether automated incident response runs without a human is: “No. AISA is human-in-the-loop by design.” The platform states that containment and remediation require analyst approval, making its approval boundary a central part of the operating model.

Darktrace describes a Real-Time AI Analyst that detects, investigates, prioritizes, and responds to deviations, including what it calls precise autonomous response. Its description places the product toward the autonomous end of the spectrum. Buyers should identify exactly which response actions are enabled by default, which assets can be affected, and how a customer can pause or limit those actions.
Which comparison criteria matter most when choosing a platform?
Start with the operating environment and the decisions the service must make, then compare vendors against the same checklist. Marketing labels such as agentic, autonomous, or human-led are less useful than a written action matrix.
| Axis | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Autonomy boundary | Can the system investigate only, recommend an action, or execute isolation, credential revocation, remediation, and recovery? Which actions require approval? | Defines operational risk and staffing needs. |
| Human role | Are analysts continuously monitoring, validating, hunting, supervising automation, or available only after escalation? | Shows whether “24/7” means active investigation or an on-call handoff. |
| Coverage and integrations | Which endpoints, identities, cloud workloads, networks, email systems, SIEMs, ticketing tools, and third-party products are supported? | A fast detector cannot protect data it never receives. |
| Response scope | Does the service only alert, or does it include containment, eradication, recovery guidance, and incident response? | Prevents an expensive gap between detection and action. |
| Evidence and auditability | Does each conclusion include source events, reasoning, timestamps, policy used, and the identity of the approver? | Supports investigations, compliance, and post-incident learning. |
| Performance evidence | Are speed and case-resolution figures independently measured, with a stated denominator and period? | Stops incomparable marketing statistics from driving procurement. |
| Governance | Can permissions be scoped by asset, user, action, severity, or business hours? Can automation be paused quickly? | Limits blast radius when a model or integration behaves unexpectedly. |
How should you define and test response authority?
Create a response matrix before a proof of concept. It should name each action, the systems it can touch, the trigger, the approval requirement, and the rollback method.
- List protected assets. Separate user laptops, servers, domain controllers, production workloads, cloud identities, privileged accounts, and network controls. Assign owners and business criticality.
- List possible actions. Include alert closure, ticket creation, host isolation, process termination, file quarantine, account disablement, token revocation, firewall changes, mailbox actions, and remediation scripts.
- Assign authority levels. Mark each action as recommendation-only, approval-required, or automatically allowed. Use narrower permissions for high-impact systems.
- Define evidence thresholds. Require the platform to show the events, indicators, detections, and confidence or policy conditions that justify an action.
- Run safe simulations. Use test endpoints, benign attack emulation, or replayed telemetry. Verify that alerts, approvals, actions, notifications, and rollback records appear as expected.
- Test failure handling. Disconnect an integration, deny a permission, or make an endpoint unreachable. Confirm whether the service queues, retries, escalates, or silently fails.
- Set an emergency stop. Document who can disable automation, how long it takes, and what protections remain active after the pause.
Do not accept “human-in-the-loop” as a complete control description. Ask whether the human must approve every containment action, only exceptions, or merely review actions after they occur.

How do coverage and integrations affect real-world value?
Coverage determines what the platform can see and therefore what it can investigate. Inventory your current endpoint, identity, cloud, network, email, SIEM, EDR, ticketing, and orchestration systems. For each integration, verify supported editions, required agents, event fields, ingestion delay, retention, and whether response commands work in both directions.
A claimed integration count is not the same as useful coverage. Sophos’s stated total of more than 500 third-party integrations is a vendor-reported figure; your evaluation should identify the specific connectors needed by your environment and test their permissions and failure behavior.
Also check blind spots. A service may monitor endpoints but not unmanaged devices, SaaS audit logs, industrial systems, or remote identities. Write those exclusions into the risk assessment instead of assuming the provider’s general platform description includes them.
What does 24/7 MDR coverage actually include?
“24/7” should describe a staffed operating commitment, not merely software that runs continuously. Request written details for monitoring hours, analyst location, alert acknowledgment, escalation channels, threat hunting, incident commander availability, and response outside business hours.
- Monitoring: Which signals are watched continuously, and which are processed in batches?
- Investigation: Are analysts expected to build timelines and scope affected assets, or only forward high-severity alerts?
- Threat hunting: How often do hunters proactively search for behavior that did not trigger a rule?
- Response: Are containment and remediation performed by the provider, directed to your staff, or billed separately?
- Escalation: Who is contacted, through which channels, and what happens when no customer responds?
- Incident response: Does the contract include forensic support, recovery coordination, and post-incident reporting?
Service pages from Sophos and Microsoft describe managed response, while Huntress describes analyst and threat-hunter involvement. The exact boundaries, response limits, minimum terms, and service-level commitments must be confirmed in current contracts.
How should you judge AI performance claims?
Speed, accuracy, and autonomous case resolution are meaningful only when the measurement method is clear. For every published number, ask who measured it, over what period, what counted as a case, which cases were excluded, and whether the result was independently audited.
The Sophos figures of 52% end-to-end AI resolution and 89 seconds from alert to automated response are examples of vendor-reported metrics. They cannot be treated as a cross-provider benchmark because the reviewed vendor pages do not provide comparable independent results for the other operating models.

What are the common purchasing mistakes?
Buying the label instead of the control model
“Autonomous,” “agentic,” and “AI-powered” do not specify permissions. Require an action-by-action matrix and a demonstration using your asset types.
Assuming human-led means fully manual
MDR providers can automate enrichment, correlation, and triage extensively. Ask where analysts enter the workflow and what they actually decide.
Comparing incompatible statistics
A response-time average, an alert count, and a case-resolution percentage may use different denominators. Normalize definitions before placing numbers in a scorecard.
Ignoring integration quality
A connector that imports alerts but cannot execute or verify response actions may leave your team with manual work. Test both ingestion and control paths.
Recommended Free Tools
Overlooking business context
Automatic isolation may be safe for a test laptop and harmful for a production controller. Use asset criticality and maintenance windows in policy design.
Failing to plan for model or service failure
Document what happens when telemetry is delayed, an API token expires, a model is uncertain, or the provider loses connectivity. Define fallback monitoring and manual response procedures.

Which operating model fits your organization?
Choose the model that matches your risk tolerance, staffing, telemetry maturity, and need for response ownership.
| Situation | Likely fit | Conditions to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Small team with limited overnight coverage | Human-led or hybrid MDR. | Continuous analyst coverage, escalation contacts, and included response actions. |
| Large SOC facing repetitive alert volume | AI-assisted investigation with tightly scoped automation. | Evidence quality, policy controls, and measurable reduction in analyst workload. |
| Highly standardized environment with low tolerance for delay | Supervised or autonomous response for defined scenarios. | Asset allowlists, rollback, emergency stop, and tested false-positive handling. |
| Regulated or safety-critical environment | Human approval for disruptive actions, with automation for evidence and triage. | Audit logs, segregation of duties, retention, and approval records. |
| Fragmented tooling or major visibility gaps | Coverage-first platform or MDR onboarding project. | Data-source scope, integration effort, and explicit exclusions. |
The strongest design is often hybrid: automate high-volume evidence work, reserve irreversible or business-disruptive actions for people, and allow narrowly defined autonomous containment where the risk is understood. The right boundary is specific to your assets and incident process, not a universal ranking of vendors.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat should be in the contract and evaluation plan?
- Define covered assets, data sources, retention, and supported integrations.
- Attach the response-authority matrix, including approval requirements and customer-configurable limits.
- Specify monitoring hours, analyst responsibilities, hunting frequency, escalation paths, and response time targets.
- State what counts as an incident, a resolved case, an automated action, and an excluded event.
- Require access to evidence, decision logs, action logs, and exportable incident records.
- Document service exclusions, additional fees, minimum terms, data residency, and termination assistance.
- Schedule periodic permission reviews and tabletop exercises so automation remains aligned with operational risk.
Because current pricing and contract-level commitments were not established consistently across these offerings, obtain written, dated terms rather than relying on product-page language.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI cybersecurity platform protect systems it cannot directly connect to?
Usually it can only infer risk from the telemetry available to it. Unconnected assets may still receive indirect protection through network or identity signals, but response actions and investigation depth will be limited; document those blind spots explicitly.
What evidence should an analyst see before approving containment?
Require a timeline of relevant events, affected identities and assets, detection logic or policy, related indicators, confidence or severity rationale, and the exact action proposed. The record should also show who approved it and whether the action succeeded.
How often should automated-response permissions be reviewed?
Review them whenever assets, integrations, ownership, or incident playbooks change, and on a regular schedule set by your risk team. A tabletop exercise after each major policy change can reveal permissions that are broader than intended.

No. Continuous monitoring may include alert triage without provider-performed remediation, or it may require a customer approver who is reachable at all hours. The contract should state who acts, who can authorize action, and what happens when contacts do not respond.
