AI chatbot privacy is provider-, product-, account-, and settings-specific. A conversation can be visible in your history, retained in backend systems, reviewed for safety, used for model improvement, or incorporated into a model before you delete it. Deleting a chat usually removes it from the interface first; it does not guarantee instant erasure from every system or undo training that has already completed. The safest approach is to identify the exact service and account type, disable model-improvement use where available, use temporary-chat controls for sensitive one-off questions, and avoid entering information that would cause harm if retained or reviewed.
What does AI chatbot privacy include?
Privacy is not one setting. It covers the entire data lifecycle: what you submit, how long the provider keeps it, whether people can review it, whether it is used to improve models, what happens when you delete it, and whether safety, legal, audit, de-identification, or completed-training exceptions apply.

- Visible history: the conversations listed in your account.
- Backend retention: copies held in provider systems after a chat disappears from the interface.
- Model-improvement use: whether prompts, outputs, feedback, or related data can enter future training or evaluation.
- Human review: access by reviewers for safety, quality, abuse investigation, or policy enforcement.
- Derived data: de-identified records, safety classifications, or other information created from a session.
- Account context: personal, business, education, healthcare, managed-workspace, and API arrangements can have different defaults.
These layers explain why “I deleted the chat” and “the provider no longer has any copy” are different statements. Always read the policy for the product and account you actually use, not a similarly named service.
Do AI chatbots keep my conversations?
Yes, each major service documents a retention period or a set of exceptions. The table compares the ordinary rules described by OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google in 2026; these are not universal promises for every plan or region.

The periods in this table are not interchangeable. A 30-day deletion statement, a 72-hour temporary-mode window, and an 18-month activity setting describe different products and data states.
Does ChatGPT use my chats to train the model?
For personal ChatGPT accounts, eligible users can turn off model improvement in the data-controls settings. OpenAI says content from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces is not used to train its models by default.
How to limit model-improvement use on a personal account
- Open ChatGPT and select your profile menu.
- Open Settings, then the privacy or data-controls section shown for your account.
- Turn off the control labeled for improving the model or allowing content to improve OpenAI’s models.
- Use Temporary Chat for a one-off conversation that should not appear in history or be used to improve models.
- Review Data Export, chat deletion, memory controls, and account-deletion options separately; changing one does not automatically change the others.
OpenAI states that Temporary Chat conversations do not appear in history or get used to improve models, and that they are automatically deleted within 30 days. OpenAI also says deleted personal data is removed within 30 days in ordinary cases, while safety and legal exceptions can apply.
What business and managed workspaces change
Workspace defaults are not the same as personal-account defaults. OpenAI’s stated no-training-by-default rule applies to Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspace content, but your organization may set retention, access, export, or administrative policies. Confirm the plan name and your employer’s agreement before treating a work chat as private from the organization that manages it.

How long does Claude keep deleted chats?
Anthropic says a deleted consumer Claude conversation is removed from your chat history immediately and deleted from backend storage within 30 days. That is the ordinary backend timeline, not a guarantee that every derivative record disappears at the same moment.
When Claude data can last longer
- If you allow model improvement, Anthropic says de-identified data may be retained for up to five years.
- Inputs and outputs flagged for usage-policy violations may be retained for up to two years.
- Trust-and-safety classification scores for flagged sessions may be retained for up to seven years.
- Turning off the model-improvement setting stops future use of previous and new chats for future training, but it does not remove data from training runs already underway or from models already trained.
How to change Claude’s training setting
- Open your Claude account settings.
- Find the privacy or model-improvement control.
- Disable model improvement if you do not want eligible conversations used for future training.
- Delete individual conversations from chat history when you no longer need them.
- For sensitive material, delete the conversation after recording any information you legitimately need, and do not assume deletion reverses an earlier safety review or completed training run.
Can Google Gemini employees see my conversations?
Some Gemini chats can be reviewed by human reviewers under Google’s safety and quality processes. Google says chats reviewed by human reviewers and related data may be retained for up to three years, so a conversation should not be treated as inaccessible to people merely because it is in a personal account.
What Gemini’s activity settings do
- Gemini Apps Activity on: auto-delete defaults to 18 months. Google offers 3-month, 36-month, and indefinite choices.
- Keep Activity off: chats are retained for 72 hours for context and safety. This limits the activity history but is not the same as instant erasure.
- Temporary chat: retained for 72 hours for context and safety and not used to train Google’s AI models.
- Feedback: feedback submitted while activity is off can still include recent chat context and uploaded files, so check the content attached to feedback before sending it.
Safer Gemini workflow
- Open Gemini’s activity or privacy controls before asking a sensitive question.
- Select the shortest auto-delete period that meets your needs, or turn Keep Activity off where appropriate.
- Use temporary chat for a one-time question rather than relying only on later deletion.
- Do not submit a thumbs-up, thumbs-down, written comment, or upload with feedback unless you accept that recent context may accompany it.
- Delete retained activity through the controls provided, then remember that human-review and safety exceptions can have separate timelines.
Does deleting a chat remove it from the AI model?
Usually, no. Deletion generally controls your account record and the provider’s ordinary cleanup process; it cannot reliably extract information from a model that has already completed training. A provider can also retain safety records, legal holds, audit information, or de-identified data under its policy.
Three different events to distinguish
- Interface deletion: the conversation disappears from your visible history.
- Backend deletion: provider systems remove ordinary stored copies on the stated schedule, such as OpenAI’s or Anthropic’s 30-day periods.
- Training impact: data already incorporated into a completed model is not normally removed by deleting the source chat or switching off a setting later.
When a provider says it will not use previous or new chats for future training after you opt out, “future” matters: the control changes subsequent use, not work already completed.

What is the safest way to ask a chatbot a sensitive question?
Use data minimization first, then the strongest available privacy mode. No setting makes a consumer chatbot an appropriate place for every secret, regulated record, or credential.
Remove identifying detail
- Replace names, email addresses, account numbers, exact dates of birth, and street addresses with neutral labels.
- Crop screenshots so they contain only the section needed for the answer.
- Describe a medical, legal, workplace, or financial scenario in general terms rather than uploading the original document.
- Never paste passwords, one-time codes, private keys, recovery phrases, or unredacted identity documents.
Choose the account and mode deliberately
- Prefer a managed business or enterprise workspace only when its written policy and administrator controls meet your requirements.
- For personal accounts, disable model improvement before sharing anything potentially sensitive.
- Use Temporary Chat in ChatGPT or temporary mode in Gemini for a limited, one-off question.
- Check whether feedback, file uploads, memory, or connected applications create additional copies or context.
Assume review is possible
Phrase the prompt as if an authorized safety reviewer might see it. This is especially important for content that could trigger abuse detection, because flagged sessions can have longer retention than ordinary chats.
How do personal, business, and API chatbot privacy terms differ?
Account type is a decisive variable. Personal consumer products often expose opt-out and temporary-chat controls, while business, education, healthcare, and API arrangements are governed by workspace settings, contracts, administrator access, and product-specific documentation.

What should I do if I already shared sensitive information?
- Stop adding detail. Do not continue the conversation or submit feedback that repeats the material.
- Record the exact account and mode. Note whether it was a personal, workspace, temporary, or activity-off session.
- Delete the conversation. Use the provider’s chat-history control, and separately remove saved memories or account data where those controls exist.
- Disable future model improvement. This limits later use but does not reverse completed training or already-started runs.
- Secure exposed credentials. Change passwords, revoke tokens, rotate keys, or contact the relevant institution if credentials or regulated identifiers were included.
- Ask the provider or workspace administrator. Request clarification about deletion, safety review, legal retention, and any applicable organizational policy.
If the material involved another person’s private information, notify the responsible organization according to its incident process. Chat deletion is a privacy step, not a substitute for credential rotation or breach response.
Which privacy controls matter most when comparing chatbots?
Do not rank services by a single retention number. Compare the complete control set and the exceptions attached to each number.

Can I rely on a temporary chat for confidential legal or medical records?
No. Temporary modes reduce history and training exposure under the provider’s stated rules, but they can still be retained briefly for safety and context and may be subject to legal exceptions. Redact the record and use a service approved for the relevant professional or regulatory requirement.

What happens if I send feedback while Gemini activity is turned off?
Google says feedback can include recent chat context and uploaded files even when activity is off. Review the text and attachments shown in the feedback form before submitting it, because feedback is a separate action from ordinary chat retention.
How can I prove what I shared before deleting a conversation?
Use the provider’s export or download control first, if you are authorized to keep a copy, and record the account type and privacy settings. Preserve only the minimum evidence needed for an incident, legal, or compliance record, then delete the live conversation.
