Secure an AI agent by limiting it to the smallest practical set of tools and resources, requiring approval for consequential or irreversible actions, and recording a tamper-resistant trail of requests, decisions, tool calls, and results. Read-only inspection can often run unattended; writes, permission changes, external communications, financial actions, and destructive operations need stronger controls. The controls must be enforced in the execution path—not merely described in a prompt—while logging enough context to investigate failures without exposing secrets.
What security settings should an AI agent have?
A useful baseline has three layers: narrowly scoped permissions, risk-based approval gates, and agent-aware audit logging. Together they reduce the damage a compromised, manipulated, or simply mistaken agent can cause while preserving automation for low-impact work.

Give the agent only the tools required for its assigned task. Scope each tool to particular resources and distinguish read-only access from write or administrative capability. An agent that summarizes tickets may need to read a queue but has no reason to alter identity policies, deploy infrastructure, or send messages externally.
Use separate tool sets for different trust levels. A monitoring agent should not receive configuration or permission-system write access unless that capability is genuinely part of its job. OWASP’s AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet recommends minimum required tools and explicit authorization for sensitive operations; its agentic-AI threat guidance says autonomous agents should follow the same change-management controls used for human administrators, with additional automated guardrails.

Give the agent its own identity
Authenticate the agent as a distinct workload identity rather than sharing a human administrator’s account. Bind that identity to an allowed tool list, resource scope, environment, and expiration. Separate identities make it possible to revoke one agent, attribute actions correctly, and prevent an approval granted to a person from silently covering unrelated automated activity.
Write a permission matrix before deployment
Document the boundary in a table that an enforcement component can evaluate. Include the operation, target, data scope, effect, and whether approval is required.
Recommended Free Tools
| Capability | Typical scope | Default treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Read records or configuration | Named systems, fields, and environments | Allow when needed; mask sensitive fields |
| Create or modify content | Specific repositories, queues, or drafts | Require review when publication or external impact is possible |
| Change security settings | Named policies, accounts, or network controls | Explicit human approval |
| Change permissions | Specified principals and resources | Explicit approval and short-lived authorization |
| Delete, disable, or deploy | Enumerated targets and environments | High-risk gate; verify reversibility |
| Send external communication or move money | Approved destinations, limits, and accounts | High-risk gate with exact-parameter review |
“Allowed” in this matrix does not mean the model can invoke a tool at will. The execution service must still check the acting identity, target, parameters, current policy, and approval state for every call.
When should an AI agent ask for approval?
Require an interruption when an action can materially affect security, finances, availability, privacy, another person, or an external system—and especially when the effect is difficult to undo. Let low-risk, read-only work proceed without a prompt when its permissions and data exposure are already bounded.
Classify by impact and reversibility
A practical policy classifies actions before execution. The following pattern is illustrative, not a universal severity standard; adapt names and thresholds to your environment.

| Risk level | Examples | Approval behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Low | Read an approved ticket, calculate a report, inspect service health | Usually unattended, with normal authorization and logging |
| Moderate | Create a draft, update a non-sensitive record, run a bounded test | Policy may allow automation; add review when the output becomes external or durable |
| High | Change a firewall rule, rotate access, deploy to production, send a customer notice | Explicit human approval tied to the exact action |
| Critical or irreversible | Delete data, disable protections, transfer funds, or make an action with no reliable rollback | Strong approval, narrow authorization, expiry, and replay protection; consider a second reviewer |
| Unknown | Unregistered tool, missing classification, or ambiguous target | Default to deny or route for review rather than treating it as low risk |
For security-relevant configuration, infrastructure, and permission changes, OWASP Cornucopia’s agentic-AI card AAI9 calls for explicit human approval and says agents should operate under the same change-management controls as human administrators. Declare whether an action is reversible in policy data; do not ask the model to infer that property at runtime.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePrevent approval fatigue
NIST’s discussion of agent identity warns that excessive access prompts can condition people to approve reflexively. Approval frequency should therefore match risk. A read-only health check that interrupts every minute trains users to click through the control, while a single precise prompt before a production permission change invites meaningful review.
Combine related low-risk operations into a bounded, time-limited authorization when the resulting effect remains predictable. Do not bundle unrelated high-impact actions merely to reduce the number of prompts.
How do you enforce an approval gate safely?
Separate the agent’s proposal from authorization and execution. A model message saying “approved” is not an authorization token, and a risk label produced by the same model must not be the only control deciding whether its call runs.
- Generate a structured proposal. Record the tool name, operation, target resource, normalized parameters, intended effect, reversibility, and requested scope.
- Evaluate policy independently. An authorization service checks the agent identity, resource scope, action classification, environment, and any separation-of-duties rules. Unknown tools or missing classifications should fail closed.
- Request human approval when required. Show the reviewer the exact target and normalized parameters, the expected impact, rollback information, initiating user or workflow, and an expiry time.
- Issue a short-lived approval artifact. Bind it to the actor, tool, target, parameters, policy version, timestamp, and approved scope. A generic “yes” that can be replayed against another target is insufficient.
- Revalidate at execution. The component that actually invokes the tool checks that the artifact is unexpired, unused or within its permitted use count, matches the current request byte-for-byte or by a canonical representation, and remains authorized under current policy.
- Execute or deny, then record the result. If policy lookup, approval validation, risk classification, or required logging is unavailable, deny the action and surface an actionable error.
This design handles race conditions such as a permission being revoked after approval, a target changing between review and execution, or an attacker replaying an old approval. OWASP specifically notes that classifying an action as low risk does not itself grant permission; authorization still belongs in the execution path.

Make the approval screen reviewable
Present concrete values, not a vague summary. “Modify access” should expand to the principal, resource, old and new values, reason, expected duration, and rollback command. Show whether the request came from a user, schedule, or another agent, and display the policy rule that triggered the gate. A reviewer should be able to reject or edit the proposal without approving a broader action than intended.
What should an AI agent audit log record?
The log should let an investigator reconstruct what was requested, what the agent planned, what it attempted, who or what authorized it, and what actually happened. Use structured events with a trace ID that follows a run across planning steps and tool calls.
Core event fields
| Event area | Record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Initiation | Trace ID, run ID, initiating identity, time, request or relevant prompt context, application and model version | Connects an action to its origin and software state |
| Plan and decision | Proposed steps, action classification, policy version, authorization outcome, refusal reason | Shows why the agent selected or rejected a path |
| Tool invocation | Tool and operation, canonical target, parameters or a protected representation, approval ID, start time | Defines exactly what was attempted |
| Human interaction | Reviewer identity, decision, displayed summary, timestamp, expiry, and any comment | Proves what was approved, not merely that a prompt appeared |
| Outcome | Tool result, status, error class, duration, affected resource, and state-change identifier | Distinguishes a proposal from a completed change |
| Network and integrations | Service or MCP endpoint, proxy allow/deny result, request correlation ID | Reveals data movement and blocked destinations |
OWASP’s agent security guidance calls for decisions, tool calls, and outcomes, including metadata such as action classification, authorization result, approval identifier, execution result, and policy version. Its Securing Agentic Applications Guide adds plans, parameters and results, validation, human-in-the-loop interactions, errors, and state changes, all correlated with trace IDs.
Protect the trail without creating a new secret store
Do not put session tokens, API keys, private credentials, or raw secrets in ordinary logs. Redact sensitive fields before emission, and store only a hash, token identifier, or other safe reference when investigators can work without the secret itself. Restrict log access by role, encrypt data in transit and at rest, and protect high-value records with append-only or integrity-verification controls.
Set retention according to investigation, security, and privacy needs rather than keeping everything forever. Document who can search prompts and tool parameters, because those fields may contain personal or confidential business data. Providers may not retain the deployment owner’s records, so application-level logging is important for debugging and incident response.

Centralize useful events
A centralized security information and event management or compliance-logging system can correlate agent traces with identity, endpoint, and infrastructure events. OpenAI’s account of running Codex safely describes OpenTelemetry export for user prompts, tool-approval decisions, tool-execution results, MCP server usage, and network-proxy allow or deny events. That is a product-specific example of telemetry, not a guarantee that every agent platform exposes the same fields.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How can teams implement these controls step by step?
Roll out controls in a narrow workflow before extending them to more tools or environments.
- Define the job boundary. Write what the agent may read, change, communicate, and never touch. Name resources and environments instead of using broad labels such as “the database.”
- Inventory every tool. Record owner, input schema, output sensitivity, side effects, rollback method, and identity used for invocation. Register unknown tools as high risk until reviewed.
- Assign action classes. Mark each operation by impact and reversibility. Include a rule for missing or stale classifications.
- Configure identities and scopes. Create a dedicated identity, grant per-tool permissions, separate read from write credentials, and make administrative access exceptional and expiring.
- Build the execution gate. Put authorization and approval validation in the service that performs the action. Ensure policy, approval, and logging failures deny execution.
- Design the reviewer experience. Display exact parameters, target, identity, risk, reversibility, expiry, and rollback. Test rejection, timeout, and changed-parameter paths.
- Emit and protect traces. Implement a common schema and trace IDs, redact secrets, limit access, and send critical events to a protected central store.
- Exercise failure scenarios. Simulate prompt injection, a compromised tool, replayed approval, revoked permission, unavailable policy service, and a logging outage. Confirm the agent stops safely and leaves enough evidence.
- Review and tune. Examine denied actions and reviewer behavior. Remove unnecessary prompts, tighten overly broad scopes, and update classifications when tools or workflows change.
What commonly goes wrong, and how do you fix it?
The agent has a powerful shared account
Symptom: One credential can read and modify unrelated systems. Fix: Replace it with a dedicated identity and per-tool, per-resource grants; make write access a separate capability that can be revoked independently.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The prompt says “approved,” but the tool still runs
Symptom: Approval is recorded in conversation text, while the tool adapter performs no independent check. Fix: Require a signed or otherwise verifiable, short-lived approval artifact and validate it at execution against the canonical request.
Reviewers click every prompt
Symptom: Frequent low-value interruptions produce rubber-stamp decisions. Fix: Allow bounded read-only automation, group predictable low-impact work, and reserve interruptions for actions with meaningful consequences.

Logs show calls but not outcomes
Symptom: Investigators know a tool was invoked but cannot tell whether it changed state. Fix: Capture result status, error details, affected-resource identifiers, and state-change references under the same trace ID.
Logs contain credentials
Symptom: Debug output exposes tokens or secrets to anyone with log access. Fix: Redact before storage, rotate exposed credentials, narrow log permissions, and add automated secret-detection tests to the logging pipeline.

Compare implementations on properties rather than brand names or a single severity score.
- Permission scope: Are tools and resources task-limited, and are read and write capabilities separated?
- Approval policy: Are high-impact, irreversible, and unknown actions gated? Does approval expire and bind to exact parameters?
- Enforcement: Does an independent execution component recheck authorization, and do failures deny the call?
- Traceability: Can prompts or initiating context, plans, calls, decisions, results, and policy outcomes be correlated?
- Log protection: Are integrity, access, retention, redaction, and sensitive-data handling explicit?
- Usability: Does the design avoid interruptions that train people to approve without inspection?
These criteria describe implementation quality, not a universal configuration or a neutral vendor benchmark. Sector-specific legal, regulatory, and contractual requirements may add controls beyond this baseline.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI agent use a human administrator’s account if approval is required?
Avoid shared administrator credentials. A separate workload identity preserves attribution, allows independent revocation, and prevents one person’s approval from being reused for unrelated automated actions.
What should happen if the policy or approval service is unavailable?
The high-impact call should be denied rather than executed on a best-effort basis. Return a clear retryable error and record the failed policy or approval check so operators can distinguish an outage from an ordinary rejection.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Should prompts be stored verbatim in an audit system?
Store the context needed to reconstruct intent, but redact credentials and minimize personal or confidential content. In some workflows a normalized request, content classification, and protected reference to the original payload provide investigative value with less exposure.
How do you test whether an approval gate can be bypassed?
Attempt parameter changes after approval, replay an expired artifact, revoke the agent identity mid-run, substitute an unregistered tool, and disable the logging path. Each case should end in denial or safe stop, with a correlated trace showing the reason.
