AI Agent Security Risks: What to Check Before Connecting Your Accounts

Before connecting an AI agent to email, cloud files, calendars, or business systems, verify three things: exactly what it can read, exactly what it can change or send, and whether a person must approve consequential actions. Choose the narrowest tools and authorization scopes that complete the task, prefer read-only access for summarization or search, and keep sending, deleting, payments, permission changes, and important edits behind a human checkpoint.

These controls reduce the damage from mistakes and manipulated content; they do not prove that prompt injection has been eliminated. An agent can encounter instructions hidden in an email, webpage, document, database record, or API response, so account security depends on both input handling and the authority you grant after the input is processed.

What are the main security risks when an AI agent connects to an account?

The central risk is excessive agency: the agent can take more actions, with more access, and with less supervision than the task requires. OWASP describes the root cause as “excessive functionality, excessive permissions, excessive autonomy” (OWASP LLM06:2025).

Consider a mailbox assistant asked to summarize incoming mail. If its integration can also forward messages, delete mail, change labels, or call other APIs, a mistake or manipulated instruction can turn a read-only job into an external action. The practical question is not whether the model sounds trustworthy; it is what the connected tools allow it to do when something goes wrong.

  • Confidentiality: Read access may expose private messages, files, calendar details, customer records, or credentials to the agent and the service operating it.
  • Integrity: Write access can alter documents, schedules, settings, records, or permissions.
  • External impact: Send, publish, purchase, invite, delete, or account-recovery functions can affect other people or create obligations.
  • Persistence: Memory, saved instructions, and stored tool results can carry unsafe data into later sessions if they are not isolated and validated.
  • Scale: A broad API or bulk-operation tool can multiply one bad decision across many records.

OWASP’s AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet recommends reducing unnecessary capabilities, applying least privilege, adding human involvement for high-risk actions, constraining action scope, and monitoring behavior.

How does prompt injection reach a connected account?

Direct prompt injection is an instruction placed in the text you submit. Indirect prompt injection is hidden in content the agent retrieves or processes on your behalf: an email body, webpage, PDF, spreadsheet cell, database record, or API response. OWASP defines prompt injection and its indirect form in its Prompt Injection glossary.

A connected workflow can create a cross-system chain:

  1. The agent reads untrusted content from one source, such as an incoming email or a document.
  2. The content influences the model’s next decision, perhaps by pretending to be a system instruction or by requesting that secrets be disclosed.
  3. The agent has a tool capable of acting elsewhere, such as forwarding mail, editing a file, or changing a calendar.
  4. A missing or ineffective safeguard allows the action to execute.

That chain is conditional, not automatic. An injection does not guarantee compromise, and not every connected agent will follow it. The possible impact is bounded by the permissions, tools, rate limits, and approval gates available at the final step. Narrowing those controls limits what an attacker can achieve even when input handling fails.

Why reading one system and acting in another matters

An agent that can read a public webpage and only produce a private summary has a different risk profile from one that can read a private mailbox and send messages to external recipients. The danger rises when untrusted input is combined with write-capable tools, broad account scope, or autonomous execution. Treat retrieved text and tool results as data to evaluate, not as authority to grant new permissions.

What should I check before connecting my accounts?

Use this inspection before accepting an authorization screen or enabling an integration. The questions are practical risk checks, not a universal certification checklist; labels and controls differ by provider.

1. Match access to the task

Write down the smallest outcome you need. For “summarize unread messages,” the required capability is message retrieval and perhaps search—not sending, deleting, forwarding, changing filters, or managing account settings. If you cannot explain why a permission supports the stated outcome, treat it as unnecessary until the provider explains it.

2. Separate read from write

Look for verbs such as read, list, search, create, edit, send, delete, share, publish, purchase, or administer. Read-only OAuth scope is the safer choice when the task is summarization or search; OWASP uses that exact mailbox scenario in its excessive-agency guidance. Remember that read-only access still exposes whatever data falls inside the scope, so limit the data set as well as the action type.

3. Inspect the complete tool list

Review every enabled integration and function, not just the one you intend to use. An extension may bundle send or delete operations even when your goal only requires reading. Disable unused connectors, plugins, actions, and broad “manage all” permissions.

4. Find the approval checkpoint

Determine whether a person must see and approve the exact proposed action immediately before execution. Require review for messages sent to other people, payments, bulk changes, account recovery, permission changes, deletion, publication, and edits to important records. “The agent usually asks” is weaker than a technical gate that blocks execution until an approval is recorded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Check scope, duration, and revocation

Prefer access limited to selected folders, files, calendars, labels, projects, or records. If the provider offers an expiry, use the shortest useful period. Confirm where you can revoke the token or disconnect the integration, and whether revocation takes effect for existing sessions and background jobs. Exact controls vary, so do not assume that a generic “connected apps” page covers every delegated token.

6. Ask how untrusted content is handled

Ask whether emails, webpages, documents, retrieval results, and tool outputs are explicitly treated as untrusted data; how the agent separates them from its operating instructions; and what happens when content requests a secret or an external action. A filtering claim is a risk-reduction measure, not a guarantee that every injection will be detected.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

7. Check testing, logs, and monitoring

Look for action logs that show the input, tool called, parameters, approval, result, and identity used. Ask how the provider tests adversarial cases and how it detects unusual volume, destinations, or repeated failures. OWASP recommends structured abuse testing and monitoring after material changes to tools, prompts, retrieval, memory, policies, or providers.

Can an AI agent send or delete things without asking?

Yes, if the connected tool grants those functions and the workflow permits autonomous execution. The remedy is to remove those capabilities when they are not required and to require an explicit human approval for every consequential action that remains.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an email workflow, a safer design is to let the agent retrieve and draft, then require a person to inspect the recipient, attachments, body, and any sensitive content and press send. OWASP’s mailbox example recommends a read-only extension for summarization and human review before each message is sent (OWASP LLM06:2025).

Apply the same principle to other systems:

  • Files: allow search or draft generation; gate overwrite, sharing, deletion, and bulk moves.
  • Calendars: allow availability lookup; review invitations, cancellations, and changes to recurring events.
  • Payments and purchasing: keep transaction creation, confirmation, and final submission under separate human control.
  • Identity and administration: require approval for role changes, new credentials, recovery settings, and access grants.

Use bounded action scope and rate limits as additional barriers. They cannot make an unsafe action safe, but they can limit the number of records, recipients, or transactions affected by one error.

Which permissions should I give an AI assistant?

Give the minimum capability, data scope, and time window that can complete the job. The following comparison shows how the same account can be configured with very different exposure.

Connection setup Typical capability Approval model What a failure can affect
Read-only, task-specific Search or summarize selected messages, files, or events No approval for the private answer; no external action available Confidentiality of the selected data; little or no direct modification
Draft-and-review Read data and prepare a proposed reply, edit, or event Person reviews exact content and parameters before execution Errors can remain in drafts unless a reviewer approves them
Write-capable, narrow scope Edit or send within one project, folder, or mailbox Approval required for high-consequence operations; lower-risk changes may be automated Changes within the bounded scope, subject to rate limits and logging
Broad, autonomous access Multiple integrations with send, delete, share, or administration functions Agent executes without a per-action human gate Potentially widespread disclosure, modification, deletion, or external communication

The safest row that still completes your task is the right target. “All mail,” “all files,” or “full account access” is not a useful default merely because it is convenient.

How do I inspect an authorization before I click Allow?

Use a provider-neutral review sequence. The exact menu names differ, but a trustworthy consent flow should let you identify the data, actions, identity, and duration involved.

  1. Define the job and stop condition. Write one sentence describing the desired result and list actions the agent must never take. This prevents a vague goal from expanding into broad access.
  2. Read the consent screen line by line. Expand advanced details if available. Record every resource and verb, including permissions hidden under a bundled integration or “manage” label.
  3. Map each permission to the job. Mark it required, optional, or unexplained. Decline or disable unexplained permissions rather than assuming they are harmless defaults.
  4. Choose the narrowest scope. Select read-only, selected folders or projects, specific calendars, or a limited workspace when those options exist. Set an expiry or one-time connection if offered.
  5. Configure approvals before first use. Turn on review for sends, deletes, shares, payments, account changes, and bulk operations. Confirm that approval displays the final target, content, and parameters—not merely a generic “run agent” prompt.
  6. Run a low-impact test. Use test data or a disposable folder. Verify that the agent cannot invoke disabled tools and that a blocked action produces a clear refusal or approval request.
  7. Record and monitor. Save the granted scopes, connection date, account identity, and intended task. Check logs during early use for unexpected tools, destinations, volume, or data access.
  8. Revoke when the task ends. Disconnect the integration or revoke its token, then verify that scheduled jobs, cached sessions, and background automations no longer run.

If the consent page does not identify what will be read or changed, who acts on your behalf, or how to revoke access, pause the connection and request that information from the provider.

How should I test and monitor an agent after connecting it?

Security is an operating process, not a one-time consent decision. Test the agent with realistic abuse cases and continue monitoring after changes to its tools, prompts, retrieval sources, memory, policies, or service provider.

Test the failure paths

  • Place an instruction-like string in a harmless test document and confirm that the agent treats it as content rather than authority.
  • Ask for an action outside the granted scope and verify that it refuses or routes the request to approval.
  • Try a bulk operation and confirm that limits, previews, and approval gates stop uncontrolled expansion.
  • Supply malformed or conflicting tool results and check that the agent pauses instead of guessing.

Do not run these tests against real customers, production mailboxes, or live payment systems without an approved test plan. The objective is to observe whether controls hold, not to prove that an injection filter is perfect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Monitor for meaningful signals

Review authentication and action logs for new tools, unusual destinations, high-volume reads, repeated denied actions, unexpected data exports, and changes outside normal hours. Keep enough context to reconstruct which input led to which tool call and which person approved it. Isolate sessions and validate data before storing it in long-term memory, as recommended by the OWASP AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet.

Reassess after material changes

A previously acceptable connection can become over-privileged when a new connector, prompt, retrieval source, memory feature, policy, or model provider is added. Repeat the permission review and abuse tests whenever the workflow changes materially, and revoke access that no longer supports a current task.

What do OWASP and NIST say about AI-agent security?

OWASP’s current guidance focuses on reducing excessive agency through least privilege, capability removal, approval checkpoints, input and output validation, rate limits, bounded actions, isolation, testing, and monitoring. Its mailbox scenario specifically contrasts a read-only extension and read-only OAuth scope with a tool that can forward or delete messages.

NIST’s Center for AI Standards and Innovation issued a request for information on securing AI agent systems on January 12, 2026, covering threats from adversarial data, insecure models, and harmful actions even without an attacker supplying malicious input (NIST CAISI RFI). In its May 18, 2026 summary, NIST reported broad agreement among commenters that agent security creates novel threats and that existing cybersecurity practices need adaptation (NIST summary).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NIST’s National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence also published a concept paper on software-agent identity and authorization on February 5, 2026 (NIST NCCoE concept paper). These publications signal active standards work; they are not a finalized, universal consumer approval interface or a certification that makes a particular agent safe.

When should I refuse the connection?

Decline or postpone authorization when the requested access is broader than the task, write functions cannot be disabled, consequential actions have no human gate, logs are unavailable, or revocation is unclear. Also stop when the provider cannot explain how it separates untrusted retrieved content from operating instructions.

A connection can be reconsidered after the provider offers a narrower scope, removes unnecessary tools, adds approval and rate limits, documents monitoring, and gives you a reliable way to revoke access. Until then, perform the task manually or use a read-only workflow that does not expose the account to autonomous changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does read-only access make an AI agent safe?

No. Read-only access removes many direct modification paths, but it can still expose sensitive messages, files, or calendar data, and malicious content can still influence the agent’s output. Limit the data scope and continue monitoring what the agent retrieves.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if an agent needs to send email as part of its job?

Use a draft-and-review workflow in which the person checks the final recipient list, body, and attachments and presses Send for each message. Keep forwarding, deletion, filtering, and mailbox-administration permissions disabled unless a separately justified task requires them.

Is there one standard approval screen I should look for?

No universal consumer approval interface is established in the current OWASP and NIST material. Providers expose different labels and controls, so verify the actual action preview, approver identity, audit record, and revocation behavior in the product you are considering.

When should I repeat the security review?

Repeat it whenever the workflow changes materially—for example, when a connector, prompt, retrieval source, memory feature, policy, or model provider changes. New capabilities can alter the agent’s effective authority even if the account token itself has not changed.
