The best AI-agent DLP solution is not a prompt filter. It is a control that can see sensitive data as an agent retrieves it, follows it into derived context, and attempts a tool call, agent-to-agent transfer, URL request, email, or file share. It must evaluate the requesting user and agent, the data sensitivity, the destination, and the action before allowing, redacting, warning, or blocking it.
There is no independently tested product ranking for 2026. Microsoft Purview, Palo Alto Networks AI Access Security and Prisma controls, and Netskope AI Guardrails take different enforcement approaches and have different visibility and licensing boundaries. Choose by mapping each product to your actual frameworks, MCP or other tool protocols, network routes, endpoints, and response-inspection needs, then require a proof of concept using your own agents and sensitive-data patterns.

Why do LLM tool calls create a DLP gap?
An agent can lose data without a user pasting a confidential file into a chat box. It may retrieve a private record through a connector, summarize that record, and then place the summary in a tool request. It could also copy a secret into a URL, send it to another agent, write it to a shared file, or include it in an email. A prompt-only filter sees none of those later actions.
OpenAI has described a URL-based exfiltration pattern in which malicious instructions hidden in retrieved content cause an agent to request a URL containing private information. The destination can capture the information in request logs or analytics even when the conversation never visibly displays it. The practical implication is that outbound requests are data-loss boundaries, not merely networking details.

Microsoft researchers Santiago Zanella-Béguelin, Shruti Tople, Mark Russinovich and colleagues state the design rule plainly: Anything that an agent can do in response to a user prompt can also be accomplished by a model’s mistake or by an attacker with a prompt injection.
Their June 16, 2026 information-flow-control article treats deterministic policy as a complement to probabilistic model safeguards, rather than assuming a model will always recognize an unsafe instruction.
Which data paths must an agent DLP design cover?
Inventory every place data enters, changes form, or leaves the agent. A control that protects one path should not be described as protecting the whole workflow.

| Agent to tool | Arguments sent through MCP, function calling, APIs, browser actions, or custom tools | Can the control inspect the complete request immediately before execution? |
| Tool to agent | Responses containing confidential fields, credentials, hidden instructions, or attacker-controlled content | Are responses scanned, labeled, and prevented from influencing a higher-risk action? |

Palo Alto Networks describes the first three broad channels as human-to-AI prompting, agent-to-tool access through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), and agent-to-agent transfers through agent-to-agent (A2A) communication. Treat those categories as a threat-model checklist; the exact protocols and product coverage still have to be verified for your deployment.
What does a robust information-flow control look like?
A useful architecture assigns labels to data, carries those labels through transformations, and makes a deterministic decision at the action boundary. Labels can represent confidentiality, integrity, source trust, regulatory class, or a combination of these attributes.
Label the source and identity
When a connector returns a payroll row, customer record, source-code fragment, or secret, attach a machine-readable classification and source identity. Also record which human, service account, and agent requested it. Do not rely on the model to remember a verbal instruction such as “keep this private.”
Propagate labels into derived context
A summary, embedding, extracted field, plan, or tool argument can still carry the risk of the original material. Your runtime should preserve the highest relevant confidentiality label when content is concatenated or transformed. Integrity labels are equally important: text retrieved from an untrusted web page should not gain the authority of a trusted system instruction merely because the model quoted it.
Check before consequential actions
Evaluate policy immediately before each action that can change state or move data. A policy decision can allow, redact selected fields, ask for human approval, return a safe error, or block. The check should compare the data label and provenance with the destination, action type, user and agent identity, task intent, and authorization scope.
Separate model suggestions from execution
The model may propose a tool call, but a policy enforcement point should construct or validate the final request. This prevents a model-generated argument from bypassing controls applied to the initial prompt. For high-impact operations, require an approval token that is bound to the exact destination, data class, and parameters rather than a broad “agent is trusted” flag.
“Anything that an agent can do in response to a user prompt can also be accomplished by a model’s mistake or by an attacker with a prompt injection.”

How should you compare AI-agent DLP products?
Use the following axes in a requirements sheet. Marketing terms such as “runtime protection” or “AI security” do not establish that a product can see your specific tool requests and responses.
| Evaluation axis | Questions to ask in a technical workshop |
|---|---|
| Enforcement point | Does policy run at an endpoint or browser, network or SASE gateway, application gateway, agent runtime, or more than one of these? |
| Protocol and framework coverage | Which agent frameworks, MCP transports, function-calling formats, A2A implementations, browsers, APIs, and custom tools are supported? Is support generally available or preview-only? |
| Data-path visibility | Can the product see prompts, retrieval results, tool requests, tool responses, agent hand-offs, and outbound actions, or only a subset? |
| Request and response inspection | Are both directions inspected? Are streaming responses, multipart uploads, compressed payloads, and encrypted sessions handled? |
| Policy context | Can a rule use sensitivity labels, user and agent identity, destination, action type, task intent, source integrity, and least-privilege authorization together? |
| Available actions | Can it detect, log, warn, redact, block, quarantine, or require approval? Can an administrator explain why a decision was made? |
| Operations | What audit events, incident workflows, retention controls, APIs, dashboards, false-positive tuning, and latency measurements are provided? |
| Commercial prerequisites | Which editions, licenses, gateways, endpoint agents, identity services, connectors, and regional capabilities are required? |
Ask vendors to demonstrate a complete trace: source classification, identity, model context, tool arguments, policy decision, response handling, and final egress. If a demonstration stops at the prompt, it does not prove tool-call DLP.
What does Microsoft Purview cover for AI-agent DLP?
Microsoft documents AI security and compliance capabilities across supported Microsoft Copilot experiences, connected enterprise applications such as Microsoft Foundry, Entra-registered applications, Claude Enterprise, and ChatGPT Enterprise, plus other generative-AI services detected through browser activity. Its materials describe DLP, AI-use discovery, and related controls, but support varies by application and license.
Where it can fit
Purview is a natural starting point for an organization already using Microsoft data classification, endpoint controls, Entra identity, and compliance workflows. Existing sensitivity labels and audit processes can reduce the work needed to define policy context. Confirm that the specific agent runtime and connector expose the events Purview expects; broad support for an application category does not prove visibility into every custom tool call.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat to verify
- Whether the exact Copilot, Foundry, Entra-registered application, or third-party enterprise application is supported in your tenant and region.
- Whether policy sees retrieval and grounding data, not only the user prompt.
- Whether protections apply before MCP or function calls and before outbound web, email, file, or API actions.
- Whether responses and generated outputs are inspected, and which controls require an applicable license.
- How custom agents, non-Microsoft endpoints, streamed content, and service-to-service calls are logged.
Microsoft’s Copilot defense documentation describes protections at prompt input, ingress, grounding, web search, and response egress. Treat those as documented control points for the named experiences, then obtain a written coverage matrix for your own agent and tool path rather than inferring that every point applies everywhere.
What does Palo Alto Networks AI Access Security and Prisma cover?
Palo Alto Networks says AI Access Security addresses inadvertent leakage in generative-AI prompts and file uploads, with application discovery and contextual access policies. Its documentation lists deployment through qualifying next-generation firewall, Prisma Access, or Prisma Browser options, subject to service and license prerequisites.
The critical limitation
The AI Access Security documentation states that the product does not scan or log generative-AI responses. That is material when your requirement includes tool responses, agent-generated output, or data returned from an external model. A control that protects uploads and prompts can still leave a response-to-egress path uninspected.
How to interpret the wider Prisma material
Palo Alto’s broader 2026 discussion of MCP and A2A risks describes additional Prisma products and data-path concepts. Do not assign every platform-level claim to AI Access Security itself. Ask which named SKU, gateway, browser component, or runtime enforces each rule and whether the event is available in your logging system.

Questions for a proof of concept
- Can the chosen deployment observe your agents’ MCP transport and custom API calls, or only browser traffic?
- Where does TLS terminate, and can the service inspect payloads without breaking application security?
- What happens when an agent sends a sensitive value in a URL query, POST body, email, or file upload?
- Is response inspection supplied by another product, and if so, how is the decision correlated with the original request?
- Which firewall, Prisma Access, Prisma Browser, service, and subscription licenses are mandatory?
What does Netskope AI Guardrails offer?
Netskope markets AI Guardrails as runtime defense for generative-AI SaaS, private deployments, and agentic workflows, including prompt-injection, jailbreak, and data-loss defenses. The cited material is a vendor product page, not an independent comparative evaluation.
Evidence to request
Require a live demonstration against your protocols and traffic patterns. Ask the team to identify supported MCP transports, agent frameworks, private-model gateways, API integrations, encrypted and streamed traffic behavior, and the exact point at which a request or response is inspected.

Operational details that affect value
- Whether policies can combine sensitivity labels with user, agent, destination, and action identity.
- Whether the service can redact fields while preserving a valid tool schema.
- Whether response content is scanned before it is fed back into the model or passed to another agent.
- How detections, approvals, and blocks appear in audit and incident workflows.
- Latency, fail-open or fail-closed behavior, and handling of gateway outages.
Do not rank Netskope above or below the other options from the product description alone. The meaningful comparison is the number of required paths you can actually observe and control in your architecture.
How do you implement DLP for secure LLM tool calls?
Build the control plane around action boundaries, not around a single chat interface. The sequence below works whether enforcement is supplied by a platform, network gateway, application proxy, or code embedded in the agent runtime.
- Map every agent and tool. Record the model, framework, MCP server or function endpoint, credentials, data stores, browser, email system, file destinations, A2A peers, and network route. Include scheduled and background agents, not only interactive assistants.
- Classify data at retrieval. Connect document and database classifications to the runtime. If a source cannot provide labels, assign a conservative default and record provenance so the agent cannot silently treat unknown data as public.
- Bind identity and authority. Use a distinct identity for each agent and tool, with least-privilege scopes. Tie delegated credentials to the initiating user and task where possible, and set short lifetimes for high-impact actions.
- Instrument request and response events. Capture the complete tool name, arguments, destination, user, agent, source labels, model decision, response, and policy result. For sensitive environments, protect logs themselves because they may contain the data you are trying to prevent from leaking.
- Place a decision point before each tool call. Evaluate destination, action, data class, integrity, identity, and intent immediately before execution. Do not approve a plan once and allow later calls to change destination or parameters without another check.
- Inspect tool responses. Scan returned text and structured fields for secrets, regulated data, hidden instructions, and integrity changes. Apply labels before the response enters the model’s context or is forwarded to another agent.
- Control egress. Apply separate rules to URLs, DNS lookups, HTTP bodies, email, ticket comments, file shares, code repositories, and record updates. Block sensitive values in query strings and headers unless the destination and purpose are explicitly authorized.
- Choose safe failure behavior. For payments, deletion, access changes, external publishing, or regulated data, fail closed or require approval when the policy service is unavailable. For low-risk read operations, a controlled fail-open mode may be acceptable if it is logged and time-limited.
- Test adversarially. Seed retrieved documents with instructions that try to redirect data, request a URL containing a secret, alter a tool destination, or impersonate a trusted system message. Verify that labels and policy survive summaries, translations, code generation, and agent hand-offs.
- Review and tune. Measure blocked, allowed, redacted, and approval-required actions; investigate false positives; and update labels, destinations, and agent scopes as workflows change.
How should a proof of concept test an AI-agent DLP product?
A credible proof of concept uses your own workflows and measures control coverage, not a polished demo. Run the same cases through each candidate with equivalent permissions and logging.
Build a representative test set
- A retrieval result containing a customer identifier, financial detail, source code, and a credential-like string.
- A malicious instruction embedded in a document that asks the agent to send retrieved content to a URL.
- A legitimate tool call whose response contains an untrusted instruction.
- An A2A hand-off from a lower-trust agent to a higher-trust agent.
- A sensitive value placed in a URL query, JSON body, email attachment, ticket comment, and shared file.
- Streaming and multipart responses, compressed payloads, and a failed or delayed policy service.
Score the decisions
For each case, record whether the product saw the event, identified the data and identities, applied the intended rule, produced an explainable log, and prevented or safely transformed the action. Record latency and the effect on valid workflows. A product that blocks everything may score well on prevention but fail usability; a product that only alerts may be unsuitable for irreversible egress.
Document unproven areas
Mark protocol support, response inspection, preview features, regional availability, and licensing dependencies as unverified until the supplier demonstrates them in writing or in your environment. Product pages do not establish that one supplier outperforms another, and no independent comparative test establishes a 2026 efficacy ranking for the products discussed here.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What licensing and integration prerequisites can change the decision?
Budget and architecture depend on more than a per-user number. Microsoft notes that support varies by application and licensing, and some Copilot protections require applicable licenses. Palo Alto lists qualifying firewall, Prisma Access, or Prisma Browser deployments and service subscriptions for AI Access Security. Netskope’s runtime claims still require confirmation of the specific protocol, deployment model, and modules you would purchase.
Before signing, request a bill of materials that names tenant or edition requirements, endpoint agents, gateways, identity integrations, data-classification services, connector fees, log retention, sandbox or browser components, and support for private models. Confirm whether development, staging, and production agents need separate capacity, and whether traffic from remote users, cloud workloads, and service-to-service calls follows the same enforcement path.
What are the common failure modes and fixes?
Only the chat prompt is inspected
Symptom: uploads are blocked, but a connector can retrieve the same data and a tool can transmit it. Fix: move or extend enforcement to retrieval, tool requests, responses, and outbound actions.
Labels disappear after summarization
Symptom: a confidential document is labeled correctly, but its summary is treated as public. Fix: propagate the strictest applicable confidentiality and integrity labels to derived context and tool arguments.
Trusted-agent assumptions override destination risk
Symptom: an approved agent can send sensitive content to any URL or peer. Fix: authorize the combination of identity, destination, action, data class, and task; do not grant blanket egress trust.

Responses are outside the inspection boundary
Symptom: the product logs prompts but cannot see a tool response that later drives an email or file write. Fix: add response inspection at the gateway or runtime, or document that the product cannot satisfy that requirement.
Encrypted or streamed traffic is invisible
Symptom: tests pass with simple text but fail for streaming APIs, compressed payloads, or end-to-end encryption. Fix: identify the actual termination point, use a supported integration, and test the production transport before deployment.
Blocking creates unsafe workarounds
Symptom: users copy data into unsanctioned tools to avoid false positives. Fix: add field-level redaction, approval workflows, narrowly scoped exceptions, and clear explanations while retaining a fail-safe rule for high-impact actions.
Which option is best for your organization?
There is no universal winner because the products enforce at different layers and expose different portions of an agent workflow.
- Start with Microsoft Purview when your agents, classifications, identities, endpoints, and compliance operations already center on the Microsoft stack. Validate each custom tool and response path rather than assuming broad Copilot coverage transfers to it.
- Evaluate Palo Alto Networks controls when network, SASE, firewall, or managed-browser enforcement is central to your design and prompt or upload controls address a defined part of the risk. Treat the documented lack of AI-response scanning in AI Access Security as a boundary that may require another control.
- Evaluate Netskope AI Guardrails when you need a runtime-oriented approach across SaaS, private deployments, and agentic workflows, but insist on protocol, topology, response-visibility, and latency evidence for your environment.
Whichever path you choose, make the buying decision from an action-boundary matrix: every retrieval, request, response, hand-off, and egress row should name the enforcement point, data and identity signals, decision action, audit record, license, and remaining gap. The product that leaves the fewest unowned paths in your real architecture is the safer choice, even if its feature list is shorter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can prompt-injection detection by itself stop an agent from leaking data?
No. Detection can miss a novel instruction or a benign-looking document that causes a dangerous action. Deterministic checks on data labels, identity, destination, and tool parameters provide a backstop even when the model or classifier is wrong.
Should an agent DLP system inspect DNS and URL query strings?
Yes, when the agent can browse or call external services. A secret can be encoded in a hostname, path, query, header, or request body, so inspecting only visible chat text leaves an avoidable egress channel.
How can teams protect DLP audit logs from becoming a second data leak?
Minimize sensitive payloads in logs, tokenize or hash values where investigation allows, restrict log access, and apply retention and encryption controls. Keep enough structured context to explain a decision without creating an unrestricted copy of the protected content.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

They need the same inventory and identity discipline, but policy can assign lower-risk actions fewer approval steps. Increase scrutiny when an agent can write state, contact an external destination, delegate to another agent, or combine data from different confidentiality domains.
