Agni and Prithvi are ballistic missile families; BrahMos and Nirbhay are cruise missile systems. That distinction matters more than treating the four names as interchangeable: they describe different flight paths, roles and variants, and a reported range or successful test for one model does not establish the specifications or service status of another. Here is what is documented about each family, including the limits of what recent test announcements prove.

What is the difference between ballistic and cruise missiles?
Ballistic and cruise describe different kinds of flight, not a simple ranking of power. A ballistic missile is propelled during part of its flight and then follows a ballistic trajectory; a cruise missile continues powered flight through the atmosphere toward its target. Agni and Prithvi belong to the first category, while BrahMos and Nirbhay belong to the second.

That classification helps explain why a single comparison such as “which is better?” is misleading. Speed class, range, launch platform and intended role are separate characteristics. A supersonic cruise missile and a long-range ballistic missile are not interchangeable tools, and a longer published range does not by itself tell a reader which system is more suitable for a particular mission.
It is also important to identify a variant before quoting a figure. “Agni range” or “Prithvi range” can obscure meaningful differences between models, while a range attached to one cruise-missile configuration should not be applied to every launch platform or version.

How does the Agni family differ by variant?
Agni is a ballistic missile lineage, not one missile with one universal range. Its variants span different reported ranges and development stages, so the name alone is not enough to describe a capability or service status.
Agni-I and Agni-II
A Ministry of Defence historical account describes Agni-I as a single-stage, solid-propelled ballistic missile and gives historical range figures for both Agni-I and Agni-II. Those government figures date to 2004; they are useful for understanding how the family was described at the time, not as a fresh measurement of every later system. The May 22, 2026 Ministry announcement reported another successful Agni-I test and called it short-range. A test announcement does not, on its own, provide a new range specification.
The distinction between the two early variants matters: the Ministry’s historical figure for Agni-II is greater than its figure for Agni-I. Those numbers should not be generalized to the entire Agni family, which includes later systems with their own stated or assessed ranges.
What is Agni-Prime?
Agni-Prime, also written Agni-P, is a newer ballistic variant. In its September 25, 2025 release, the Ministry of Defence gives it a designed range of up to 2,000 km and makes an important distinction between two mobility configurations. The release says the road-mobile Agni-P had already been inducted, while the successful rail-mobile test was intended to enable future induction of a rail-based system. The status of one configuration should not be transferred to the other.

Road and rail mobility describe how a system can be based and moved; they do not change the meaning of the stated designed range. The release’s wording is clear about sequence: the road-mobile version was described as inducted, but a rail-mobile test was a step toward possible future induction, not confirmation that the rail-based system was already in service. Ministry of Defence release on Agni-P, September 25, 2025.
What do the Agni-5 MIRV tests establish?
Mission Divyastra, announced on March 11, 2024, was explicitly described as an Agni-5 flight test with a multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicle (MIRV) payload. The CSIS Missile Defense Project assessed Agni-5’s range at 5,000–8,000 km in 2024; that is an assessment, not a range measurement reported from the test.
A separate Ministry announcement, issued after a May 8, 2026 trial, described an “advanced Agni” MIRV trial. It did not identify that tested vehicle as Agni-5, so the two announcements should not be collapsed into a claim that the later test was an Agni-5 test. Nor does a successful trial by itself establish that a tested MIRV configuration has been inducted or deployed. CSIS Missile Defense Project’s Agni-I entry provides a useful example of why the variant, source and date attached to a specification matter.
How do Prithvi-I and Prithvi-II differ?
Prithvi is an earlier ballistic missile family associated with India’s Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP). The government-published DRDO history places the programme within that development effort; later descriptions distinguish Prithvi-I from Prithvi-II rather than treating them as the same system.

CSIS lists Prithvi-I as retired and reports a different range for Prithvi-II, whose range varies with payload. These are CSIS figures from 2024, not a claim that every test flies to the listed maximum. On July 17, 2025, the Ministry of Defence reported a successful Prithvi-II test under Strategic Forces Command. That announcement confirms the test, but it does not revise the variant’s published range or establish that the test involved Prithvi-I.
Where does Dhanush fit?
Dhanush is described in older Ministry of Defence material as a naval version of Prithvi, while the government-published DRDO chapter calls it ship-based. That relationship is more precise than casually labeling every naval Prithvi-related system “Prithvi-III.” The terminology is not consistently used across the cited accounts, so Dhanush is best treated as a ship-based related system rather than as evidence that every source is naming the same variant in the same way.

Is BrahMos a ballistic or cruise missile?
BrahMos is a supersonic cruise-missile system, not a ballistic missile in the Agni or Prithvi class. DRDO describes it as jointly developed with Russia’s NPOM and identifies anti-ship and land-attack variants, with land-, sea- and air-launch options. Those roles and launch modes are why it is more useful to describe BrahMos as a family of configurations than to assign one unqualified specification to every version.
The Ministry of Defence’s December 1, 2025 account of a BrahMos launch by an operational Indian Army unit supports a statement that the Army had a fielded unit. It is a specific service-status point, not proof that every BrahMos variant or launch platform has the same status. The available evidence does not justify attaching a single range, speed figure or newer variant name to every BrahMos configuration. DRDO’s BrahMos product description identifies the system’s stated roles and platform options.

How is Nirbhay different from BrahMos?
Both are cruise missiles, but the cited CSIS description classifies Nirbhay as subsonic, whereas BrahMos is supersonic. Their documented roles and evidence are also different: DRDO describes BrahMos in anti-ship and land-attack variants and multiple launch modes, while the CSIS Nirbhay entry describes an indigenous system and estimates its range at 800–1,000 km.
The Nirbhay range is an estimate from the CSIS Missile Defense Project page last updated April 23, 2024, not a confirmed distance for every test or configuration. Its cited description does not establish present-day operational induction. That evidence limit matters because a successful trial, a development announcement and formal induction are distinct milestones. CSIS Missile Defense Project’s Nirbhay entry provides the cited description and estimate.

The Ministry of Defence’s April 18, 2024 release names the tested system Indigenous Technology Cruise Missile (ITCM). It reports a successful flight test, indigenous propulsion and low-altitude waypoint flight, but does not explicitly identify the vehicle as Nirbhay or announce that it had entered service. On the evidence available here, ITCM should not be used as a synonym for Nirbhay, and the test should not be presented as proof of Nirbhay’s induction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you interpret missile ranges and test announcements?
A range figure is meaningful only when its source and variant remain attached. In this comparison, the figures come from different kinds of evidence: historical Ministry descriptions, a designed range in a later Ministry release, and CSIS assessments or reported estimates. They are not a common set of independently measured maximum distances.

- Designed range: A stated design capability, such as the Ministry’s “up to” figure for Agni-P, is not the same as a test report that says a missile flew that distance.
- Assessed or estimated range: Figures published by CSIS are attributed to that source and its stated update year; they should not be recast as a fresh official specification.
- Successful test: This means a test was reported as successful. It does not automatically establish induction, operational deployment, a new maximum range or the status of every configuration.
- Induction: A source must say a system or configuration entered service before that status can be stated. The Agni-P road-mobile and rail-mobile descriptions illustrate why configuration-specific wording matters.
These distinctions help avoid a false “most powerful” ranking. Range, speed, platform, mission and confirmed service status answer different questions; no single number settles them all. For a reader comparing the four names, the safest method is to keep the variant, the type of claim and the date together whenever a figure or status is mentioned.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does MIRV stand for?
MIRV means multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicle: a missile payload configuration associated with more than one re-entry vehicle that can be directed independently. The acronym describes a configuration, not by itself a declaration that a specific missile carrying it has entered service.
What does SFC mean in Indian missile test reports?
SFC stands for Strategic Forces Command. When a report says a test was conducted under SFC, that identifies the command associated with the test; it does not alone specify the missile’s full operational status.
What does waypoint flight mean for a cruise missile?
A waypoint is a programmed point along a planned route. A report of low-altitude waypoint flight indicates the missile followed a route incorporating such points, but that description alone does not supply a full range, accuracy or operational-readiness assessment.
