The Acer Predator Atlas 8 runs Windows 11, not SteamOS. That means Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the Xbox PC app install as ordinary Windows applications. The Atlas 8 initially opens in controller-focused Xbox mode, where Library → My Apps → Download now offers tiles for Steam and Epic. If a tile fails, exit to the Windows desktop and run the vendor’s normal installer. Update Windows, Microsoft Store, Xbox mode, and Predator Sense first; format any extra game drive as NTFS before the first Game Pass download.
What should you do before installing any game launcher?
Finish the first-run maintenance before downloading large games. The Atlas 8 configuration shown in an October 8, 2026 first-run video had an Intel Arc G3 Extreme processor, 24 GB of RAM, and a 1 TB SSD; those figures describe that reviewed unit, not every Atlas 8 SKU. Acer’s official specification sheet was not available for confirmation, so do not assume every model has the same memory, storage, or card-slot rating.

- Reach the Windows desktop. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and select the Windows desktop, or open the Predator Sense Quick menu, select the cog, and choose Exit Xbox mode.
- Install Windows updates. Open Start → Settings → Windows Update, install everything offered, restart, and check again until no further updates remain.
- Update Microsoft Store apps. Open Microsoft Store, choose Library → Downloads, select Check for updates, restart if requested, and repeat until the list is clear. An old Xbox app can cause grey tiles and missing Install buttons.
- Update Predator Sense. Open Predator Sense and run Live Update. The app controls the Atlas 8’s Quiet, Balanced, Turbo, and Manual power modes as well as its quick controls.
- Install Intel Driver & Support Assistant. It is not preinstalled. Use Intel’s official download page to install certified graphics drivers, then manually check for game-day Intel Arc G3 Extreme driver updates when needed.
- Optional display cleanup. The reviewed unit defaulted to 200% scaling. The presenter preferred 150%, but that is a comfort choice, not an installation requirement. Remove unused Windows apps through Settings → Apps → Installed apps; avoid uninstaller utilities of unknown origin.
After a graphics-driver restart, the Atlas 8 may return to Xbox mode automatically. That is expected; use Win + F11 whenever you need to switch between the full-screen shell and Windows.
What is Xbox mode on the Atlas 8, and how do you leave it?
Xbox mode is Microsoft’s controller-optimized full-screen launcher for Windows 11 version 24H2 or later in supported markets. It starts the selected gaming home app, runs games full screen, and presents your installed launchers and games in a console-style interface. The Atlas 8’s first boot opens there, so you do not need to configure it before installing Steam or Epic.

- Enter or exit: press Win + F11.
- From Xbox mode: swipe up from the bottom and choose the Windows desktop.
- From Predator Sense: press its Quick menu button, select the cog, and choose Exit Xbox mode.
- Disable it at startup: open Start → Settings → Gaming → Xbox mode, set Choose home app to None, or turn off Enter Xbox mode on startup. Select Xbox if you want the shipped controller-first home screen.
Task View (Win + Tab) and Game Bar (Win + G, or the Xbox button) remain available. On the Atlas 8, a long press of the Predator Sense Quick button opens the task switcher; move with the stick or D-pad, press A to focus, and press X to close.
How do you install Steam on an Acer Predator handheld?
Steam is not shown as preinstalled on the Atlas 8. The current Atlas 8 setup footage shows a Steam Download now tile in Xbox mode, so expect to install it yourself.

Fast method: Xbox mode’s My Apps tile
- In Xbox mode, open Library.
- If My Apps is not visible, open the top-left menu and choose Settings → Library and extensions. Turn on Display my apps in library.
- Open My Apps and select the Steam tile, then choose Download now.
- Run the downloaded installer, accept the prompts, and sign in to your Steam account. Touch input and the on-screen keyboard work, but a USB-C hub with a keyboard and mouse makes account entry easier.
- Return to Xbox mode. Steam should become available in the combined game library; the Steam client itself remains a Windows desktop application.
The Atlas 8 tile also lists Epic, EA, GOG, Battle.net, and Ubisoft Connect. Installing a tile does not create an account or install games; each launcher still requires its own sign-in and library downloads.
Desktop fallback: download Valve’s Windows installer
If the tile is missing or its button is grey, exit Xbox mode and open Valve’s Steam download page. Select Install Steam, download SteamSetup.exe, open the file, and complete setup. Choose the Windows executable, not the macOS, SteamOS/Linux, or ChromeOS options shown on the page.
Valve describes Steam as a destination for playing, discussing, and creating games. Its current about page lists nearly 30,000 games, a client available in 28 languages, and more than 100 payment methods across over 35 currencies. The page also displays a live online-player counter; that counter changes continuously and should not be treated as an annual user total.

How do you install the Epic Games Store?
Epic is also a normal Windows installation on the Atlas 8. Do not use Linux-specific launchers or compatibility layers; this handheld runs Windows 11.

- Open Library → My Apps in Xbox mode. Enable Display my apps in library first if My Apps is hidden.
- Select Epic and choose Download now.
- Run the Epic installer, sign in, and select the library location when Epic asks where to place a game.
- Return to Xbox mode. Epic games can appear with Xbox, Steam, GOG, and other installed-PC titles in the aggregated library.
Install from the Windows desktop
Open the official Epic Games Store download page in Edge or another browser and select the Install button at the top. Run the Windows installer, sign in, and let Epic update itself before choosing a game. The desktop route is the correct fallback when an Xbox-mode tile does not respond.
How do you get Xbox Game Pass on the Atlas 8?
Game Pass uses the Xbox PC app on this Windows handheld. It requires Windows 10 or Windows 11 version 22H2 or higher. Download the installer from Microsoft’s Xbox app link, or search for Xbox in Microsoft Store. Microsoft’s help page is available at Xbox Support.
- Open Microsoft Store and update the Xbox app before signing in.
- Launch Xbox and sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the subscription. Select the profile icon to confirm the active plan.
- Open Profile → Settings → General → New game installs and choose the internal SSD or your prepared NTFS drive before installing a title.
- Browse the Game Pass catalog, open a game, and choose Install for a local copy. Use the cloud option only when your plan includes cloud play and your connection is suitable.
- Leave Xbox selected as the Xbox mode home app if you want Game Pass and other launchers available from the same controller-first screen.
The Xbox PC app can bring together games from Xbox, Game Pass, and other PC storefronts. A bundled trial is not confirmed for every Atlas 8 purchase; if Acer or Microsoft included one with your specific unit, check Microsoft Store → Library → Included with device and claim it there.
Which Game Pass plan is right for a Windows handheld?
A handheld-only Windows owner does not automatically need Ultimate. PC Game Pass is the least expensive route to local PC downloads and day-one PC releases, while Premium and Ultimate add console-class libraries and capped cloud hours.

Prices and introductory offers are the US figures shown by Microsoft on October 29, 2026; taxes, regional pricing, and later changes can differ. The cloud-hour limits are monthly allowances, not unlimited streaming. PC Game Pass has no cloud gaming benefit, so choose Premium or Ultimate only if those extra hours and cross-device features matter to you.
Should you install a Game Pass game or stream it?
Install locally when you are travelling, have unreliable Wi-Fi, or need the lowest possible input latency. Stream when storage is tight and your connection is stable. Microsoft supports cloud play through the Xbox app and xbox.com/play; cloud availability and hours depend on the plan and supported market.
- Local installation: works during travel after the licence is validated, avoids streaming latency, and consumes substantial storage. Switchblade Gaming’s 2026 Windows-handheld guide estimates Call of Duty at more than 130 GB and many modern AAA games at 60–80 GB.
- Cloud streaming: skips the download and can include selected games you own, but requires an internet connection and uses your plan’s monthly cloud allowance. The often-quoted 20 Mbps minimum and 5 GHz Wi-Fi recommendation comes from third-party handheld guidance, not a figure re-verified on Microsoft’s current cloud FAQ.
- Offline play: downloaded titles can work offline, while cloud games and online multiplayer cannot. Third-party guidance citing Xbox Wire says the app checks the licence roughly every 30 days, so reconnect periodically before a long trip.
How do you install Game Pass games on a microSD card or extra drive?
Format the extra card or drive as NTFS before the first Xbox download. The Xbox app does not offer an exFAT card as an install target, even if Windows can otherwise read and write it.
- Back up anything on the card, because formatting erases it.
- In Windows, open File Explorer → This PC, right-click the card or drive, choose Format, select NTFS, and confirm.
- Open Xbox, select your profile, then choose Settings → General → New game installs.
- Choose the NTFS card or external drive as the default. When an individual title offers Choose a drive, select the same location.
Keep frequently played games on the internal SSD when possible and use the extra drive for a backlog. The Atlas 8 card-slot speed class was not documented in the available material, so do not assume a particular UHS-I or UHS-II rating.

After the launchers are installed and signed in, Xbox mode can present Xbox, Game Pass, Steam, Epic, GOG, EA, and other PC games in a combined library. My Apps is the launcher area; My Games is where playable titles can be surfaced. If a launcher is missing, return to Library and extensions and enable Display my apps in library.

You can keep Microsoft Store, Game Bar, Windows Settings, and Intel Driver & Support Assistant in My Apps as well. That keeps updates and troubleshooting tools reachable without repeatedly leaving the full-screen shell. For accounts that support it, the Xbox app’s account-linking options can connect Steam and other networks, but each store’s ownership and installation rules remain separate.
Xbox mode is optional. Setting Choose home app to None returns the device to a conventional Windows desktop workflow; a third-party front end can then be configured separately, but it is not required to install or play any of these games.

- Grey or missing Xbox tiles: update the Xbox app in Microsoft Store, restart, and check Library and extensions → Display my apps in library.
- Installer will not open: exit Xbox mode, download the official Windows installer in Edge, and run it from the desktop. Confirm that Windows is fully updated first.
- Game Pass cannot see the card: verify that it is NTFS, reconnect it, and reselect it under Xbox → Profile → Settings → General → New game installs.
- Game is missing from the combined library: open the launcher once on the desktop, sign in, let it finish updating, then restart Xbox mode.
- Controller navigation stops on the desktop: open Predator Sense and check the controller or desktop-gamepad mode in its Quick menu. The Quick menu also exposes an on-screen keyboard, brightness, volume, resolution, refresh rate, fan control, and an End task command.
- Storage fills unexpectedly: check the install drive in each launcher separately. Steam and Epic maintain their own default-library settings; changing Xbox’s default does not move games already installed by those clients.
Can you add Game Pass games to Steam?
It is possible to add some locally installed Xbox games to Steam with a Windows utility such as UWPHook, or by pointing Steam at a visible executable under C:XboxGames. This is optional and depends on the title exposing a usable local executable. Cloud-streamed games have no local executable to add, so launch them through Xbox instead.

Keep Xbox mode enabled if the Atlas 8 is mainly a controller-first console replacement: it starts full screen, gathers launchers, and provides quick access to Game Pass. Use the desktop when installing unfamiliar .exe files, managing folders, changing Windows settings, or working in a browser. Win + F11 makes the choice reversible, so there is no need to commit to one interface.

Why does Xbox mode sometimes show low-resolution artwork for Steam games?
The aggregated library can use generic or low-resolution artwork even when the game launches correctly. An optional Game Bar widget called Steam Grid DB for Xbox can replace artwork; it changes presentation only and is not needed for installation or play.
Can I use an external keyboard and mouse during setup?
Yes. A USB-C hub makes it easier to connect both while entering account credentials or running installers. Touch controls and the on-screen keyboard are sufficient if you prefer not to carry peripherals.
