Use the game’s official launcher or account library to get and verify updates; do not install a “leaked build,” emergency patch, or missing file from a message or unfamiliar download site. Steam’s desktop client offers Library → game → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. That checks the installation against Steam’s current record, but it is not a malware scan and cannot prove an upstream build was never compromised.

The advice matters after Warhorse Studios confirmed a cyberattack on 27 October 2026. The studio said attackers accessed company systems and company data; as of Bitdefender’s 28 October summary, the affected data categories, attackers, entry point, and any ransomware involvement had not been identified. The disclosure does not establish that Kingdom Come: Deliverance files or player credentials were accessed. Treat that as an important distinction: be careful with unofficial files without assuming a malicious game update has been confirmed.

What should you do first after a developer cyberattack?

Get updates through the storefront or launcher where you own the game, and verify files there if an update failed or the installation behaves strangely. If a studio announces a patch or incident, reach its official site or social account by navigating there yourself; do not rely on a link in an unsolicited direct message, email, QR code, or forum post.

Warhorse’s player statement, reported by Eurogamer on 27 October 2026, said the studio was working with cybersecurity specialists to secure its systems and understand the incident. The longer statement reproduced by GamingOnLinux said the attack involved unauthorized access to company systems and access to company data. Access does not by itself show that data was copied or published, or that players’ computers or gaming accounts were affected. The studio said it would share further verified information when it responsibly could and was not conducting interviews during the investigation. New verified disclosures could change what is known.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For a player, separate three problems that can look similar:

  • A damaged or incomplete local update: an interrupted download, full disk, antivirus quarantine, or mod that overwrote a managed file. Use the store’s verify or repair function.
  • An impersonation attempt: someone uses news of a breach to circulate a supposed leaked build, emergency patch, account-verification request, or “fix.” Confirm the announcement through a channel you reached independently, and do not run the file.
  • A compromised publisher source or build pipeline: a file could come from a publisher page and match its posted hash even if an attacker changed both. A signature or hash is useful evidence, not an all-clear.

These are threat scenarios, not evidence that a particular fake patch campaign followed the Warhorse incident. A familiar logo, convincing filename, or large social-media following is not proof of provenance.

How do I verify a game’s files on Steam?

Use Steam’s built-in check from the desktop client. It compares the local installation with the files Steam expects for that game and branch, then can reacquire official copies of files that are absent or do not match.

  1. Open the Steam desktop client and select Library.
  2. Right-click the affected game, or open its gear menu, and choose Properties.
  3. Select Installed Files. Older Steam wording used Local Files.
  4. Choose Verify integrity of game files.
  5. Leave Steam open until the scan finishes. If Steam downloads replacements, wait for that download to finish before launching the game.

New Game Wire checked the Steam Support instructions on 8 October 2026; labels can change with client updates. NewGamesZone reported in 2026 that a typical verification scan takes about 1 to 10 minutes, depending on the game’s size and disk speed. Valve advises against running other storage-heavy work, such as drive defragmentation or an antivirus scan, during verification.

When to run the check

  • An update was interrupted or the game stopped launching after it.
  • Audio, textures, or other installed content is missing.
  • Security software quarantined a game file.
  • You removed a mod that had overwritten files managed by Steam.

If the check identifies a problem, let Steam finish reacquiring files, restart Steam, and then try the game. A mod that changed a managed file may be replaced with Steam’s expected version. Verification checks the installation; it is designed not to wipe progress, but save locations vary by game. Back up saves before attempting a full reinstall.

What if verification keeps failing?

Repeated failures can point to antivirus quarantine, disk or permission errors, a mod rewriting files, or a buggy official patch. Check the game’s official news and your antivirus history. If security software removes the restored file again, do not repeatedly fetch replacement executables from third-party sites or disable protection to force the game to launch. Confirm that the file is part of the legitimate installation and follow the developer’s security instructions.

For advanced users, SteamCMD supports validation for a game installed in a specified folder. Use the same Steam account that owns the game, and do not share its password or Steam Guard code:

If you do not know the correct AppID or install directory, use the desktop client’s Verify button rather than guessing.

What does “verify integrity of game files” actually prove?

A successful launcher check means the local files match that launcher’s current manifest or record for the game and branch. It does not establish that the whole computer is malware-free, that the game will run correctly, or that a developer’s upstream build was never tampered with before the store received it.

Steam tracks expected file presence, sizes, and hashes; when a required file is missing or fails its check, it can mark that file for reacquisition. Epic Games Store and Xbox PC/Microsoft Store launchers, like Steam and GOG, also offer verify or repair features that compare local files with their expected records and replace failures. Use the relevant launcher’s built-in function before considering a full reinstall.

A Steam build ID or version label can help identify the build recorded by the client or publisher, but matching labels do not prove two installations contain identical files. Likewise, checking the SHA-256 hash of one executable says nothing definitive about every other file in the game folder.

Which checks tell you whether a download is genuine?

No single check answers every question. Start with provenance—who delivered the file—and then consider integrity, signer identity, malware detection, and whether the developer or storefront confirms that the update is intended.

Check What it can tell you What it cannot prove
Official store or account library The intended channel delivered the update. That every local byte downloaded correctly.
Launcher verify or repair Local files match the launcher’s current manifest. That the whole computer is clean or that the upstream build was never tampered with.
SHA-256 compared with a publisher value The file’s bytes match the value that was posted. That the publisher’s site or build pipeline was uncompromised.
Authenticode signature or APK signer fingerprint Who signed the signed file or package, and whether it changed after signing. That a signing key was never stolen or that the program is harmless.
Antivirus scan Whether the scanner detects known threats at scan time. That a clean result proves the file is genuine or risk-free.
Version label or build ID The version or build recorded by the publisher or store. That two installations have identical files.

When these signals disagree, trust the channel you independently navigated to over a filename, a forum-posted hash, a clean scan, or a signature on only one component of a multi-part installer. If a publisher’s official channel and a supposed patch do not line up, wait for confirmation rather than treating the other checks as permission to install.

How do I check a Windows installer’s signature and SHA-256 hash?

For an offline installer or a download outside a launcher, first confirm that it came from the official account library or publisher channel. Then check its signature and, if the publisher publishes a hash, compare the file with that exact value. These checks complement provenance; neither substitutes for it.

Check Authenticode in PowerShell

Run this command with the installer’s actual path:

Get-AuthenticodeSignature -LiteralPath "C:Pathsetup.exe" | Format-List Status,StatusMessage,SignerCertificate,TimeStamperCertificate
  • Valid: Windows accepts the signature under its current trust rules. Inspect the certificate to see who signed the file. It does not prove the software is harmless or the publisher’s systems were uncompromised.
  • NotSigned: no Authenticode signature was found. That is inconclusive; legitimate installers can be unsigned.
  • Another status or failure: read StatusMessage. Check the computer’s clock and internet connection if revocation checks may be involved, then obtain a fresh copy from the official channel or contact the publisher. Do not disable SmartScreen or antivirus as a supposed signature fix.

The optional Windows SDK command is signtool verify /pa /all /v "C:Pathsetup.exe". A signature check concerns the signed file; it does not automatically authenticate separate files beside it.

Compare a SHA-256 value

In PowerShell, calculate the file’s hash with:

Get-FileHash -LiteralPath "C:Pathsetup.exe" -Algorithm SHA256

Compare every character with the value published through the publisher’s official HTTPS page. A mismatch means the bytes differ; do not install that copy. Download a fresh one through the official channel and check again. If the publisher does not publish a hash, you cannot make this comparison. Do not treat a value pasted in a forum or an unsigned email as the publisher’s trusted value; a hash delivered over plain HTTP is also untrusted.

Other built-in options include certutil -hashfile filename.exe SHA256 in Command Prompt, shasum -a 256 filename on macOS, and sha256sum filename on Linux. A SHA-256 digest has 64 hexadecimal characters, according to NewGamesZone’s 2026 guidance; uppercase and lowercase letters represent the same hexadecimal value. Windows 10 and 11 already include the PowerShell and certutil options, so extra hash software is optional.

Online Tech Tips, updated 16 July 2026, describes MD5 as cryptographically broken because of collisions and SHA-1 as broken; Google demonstrated a practical SHA-1 collision in 2017 with SHAttered. SHA-256 is the current standard in this guidance, with no practical attack demonstrated against it; SHA-512 is stronger but less common. CRC32 is not a security tool. For checksum lists used with Linux downloads, a GPG/PGP signature can help establish that the list itself was not swapped, in addition to checking the files. A trusted storefront or package manager adds another useful channel check.

Why a matching hash is not a safety verdict

A matching SHA-256 hash proves that the file is byte-for-byte identical to the file represented by the posted value. It does not prove the publisher’s website or build pipeline was clean. As Online Tech Tips explains, if an attacker changed both the binary and the posted checksum, the malicious file would still match that checksum. NewGamesZone likewise cautions that a compromised build pipeline can produce a binary whose published hash matches. In that situation, wait for an official storefront-delivered update and independent studio confirmation rather than relying on the hash alone.

How should I verify a GOG offline installer or multi-part download?

Start with the GOG account library or official Galaxy client, and keep every part of a multi-part download from the same download set. A familiar filename or a hash copied from an unknown site does not establish that an installer is genuine.

A valid Authenticode signature on setup.exe applies to that signed executable, not automatically to accompanying .bin files. An unsigned installer is inconclusive, not automatically malicious. Scan the full set with Microsoft Defender if you need a malware check; for example:

A clean scan is not proof of legitimacy. If Defender flags a confirmed GOG download, do not disable protection to force it to run; confirm the source, contact GOG Support, and contact Microsoft if a verified download continues to trigger detection. In Galaxy, use Manage installation → Verify / Repair when that option is available. Do not mix .bin files from different downloads.

How can I tell whether a Steam DLL is Valve’s file or a replaced copy?

After a public breach, a supposed “fix” may place a modified steam.dll or steam_api.dll beside a game executable. The filename alone does not establish that the file came from Valve; check its location and signature rather than running a replacement from an unofficial download.

steam.dll

Valve’s steam.dll belongs with the Steam client. A copy beside a game’s executable can be from a modified game. For the Valve catalogue described by 2-spyware in 2026, builds are about 2.9 MB to 3.5 MB; a copy only a few hundred kilobytes in size is consistent with the replacement copies that source describes. Valve copies report Valve Corporation and Steam Client Engine in their version information, while replacement copies may have empty fields or version 0.0.0.0. Text fields can be copied, so they are not proof. A valid Authenticode signature naming Valve is stronger evidence; NotSigned or HashMismatch on a file claiming to be Valve’s means it was replaced or changed.

steam_api.dll

For the 32-bit Valve catalogue, 2-spyware reported builds of about 100 KB to 260 KB in 2026. A valid signature with Valve as signer indicates an unmodified Valve build; NotSigned, HashMismatch, or another signer means it is not Valve’s as shipped. Steam emulators commonly have other signs, such as a nearby .ini, a steam_settings folder, or the original library renamed to steam_api.dll.bak or steam_api_o.dll. Treat these as indicators of a modified installation, not as instructions to obtain or use replacement files.

How can I tell if an Android or Fire TV APK update is from the real developer?

For a sideloaded Android package, compare the new APK’s SHA-256 signing-certificate fingerprint with the fingerprint of the installed app. If they match, the same developer key signed both; if they do not, stop rather than treating the package as a normal update. Google’s apksigner can display certificate details with apksigner verify --print-certs --verbose.

The APK’s ordinary file hash changes when its contents change between versions. The signing-certificate fingerprint is the identity comparison used here, and it normally remains the same unless the signing key is stolen or rotated. This check does not override provenance: obtain the package from a channel the developer confirms. For apps distributed through a phone or console store, use the official store instead of a sideloaded file.

Should console players install a patch offered outside the store?

No. Players on PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo should use the console’s official store or updater; they generally cannot independently hash store packages. A USB drive, QR code, Discord attachment, or “leaked patch” is outside that channel.

A storefront can also control distribution by pausing or removing a title while an issue is addressed. Metro reported that Street Fighter 5 was removed from the PlayStation Store and Steam during a separate Capcom issue. That illustrates the platform’s role as an update channel; it is not evidence about Warhorse’s files. Reports during the same news week gave conflicting figures for Capcom: Metro and Gamereactor reported 196 customer accounts, with Gamereactor attributing that figure to IGN, while Channelnews reported Capcom confirmed a breach involving more than 11.7 million Capcom ID accounts. Those counts are not settled by the reporting cited here and do not establish anything about the Warhorse incident.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I change my Steam password after the incident?

The Warhorse disclosure alone does not establish that Steam credentials were exposed, so it is not by itself evidence that every player must reset a Steam password. Change a password if you entered it on a suspicious page, reused it on an affected service, or see signs of unauthorized access.

Use a different password for each account and enable multifactor authentication where available. Keep Steam Guard codes and other authentication codes private; do not give them to someone claiming to investigate the incident or restore an account. If you entered credentials on a suspicious page, change the password through the genuine service and anywhere else you reused it, review active sessions, and sign out unfamiliar devices. If you ran a suspicious download, scan the device and use a trusted device to secure your accounts.

What should you do if antivirus flags a game file?

Do not turn off protection just to make an unverified installer run. First check the antivirus history and confirm whether the flagged file belongs to the legitimate game installation. Antivirus software can mistakenly quarantine legitimate game files, but a clean scan cannot prove a download is genuine.

If Steam restores a file and antivirus immediately removes it again, the verification process may repeat without resolving the cause. Confirm the game’s official source, review the security software’s detection details, and follow the developer’s security guidance. Do not fetch a replacement executable from an unofficial file site, even if the filename matches; a random “missing DLL” download is not a safe repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if a studio’s announcement and the launcher’s update listing do not match?

Do not install a separate file to reconcile the difference. Reach the studio’s official channel and the game’s store listing independently, then wait for the studio or storefront to confirm the intended release.

Can I trust two downloads that produce the same hash?

They are evidence that the two files have identical bytes, not that either file is safe. If both downloads came from the same compromised source, both can reproduce the same malicious file and hash.

Does a code-signing timestamp make a signed installer safe?

No. A signature and timestamp help Windows assess the signer and whether the signed file changed after signing; neither establishes that the program is harmless or that the signing key was never compromised.
