The reliable way to keep superhero timelines straight is to maintain one checklist per continuity, choose a viewing order before you start, and mark each film or season immediately. For a first MCU watch, use release order; for a rewatch or lore map, use Disney+’s current in-universe chronology. Keep the DCEU and the newer DCU on separate lists, and treat Elseworlds such as The Batman and Joker as their own lane.
Use a tracker that matches your persistence needs: browser-only lists are quick but can disappear when site data is cleared, while a Google-signed tracker can follow you across devices. The sections below show how to build the lists, choose an MCU or DC order, recover from missing titles, and plan a shorter catch-up before Avengers: Doomsday.

How do I set up a superhero timeline tracker that will not collapse later?
Start with separate continuity lists, not one giant catalogue of every cape story. A title can be watched and checked off in more than one collection when a tracker supports that, but its canon should remain labeled.
- Create one list per universe. At minimum, make an MCU list, a DCEU list and a DCU list. Add separate lists for Fox X-Men, Sony Spider-Man, the Arrowverse or other franchises only when you actually intend to watch them.
- Choose one order for the current pass. Use release order for a first watch, Disney+ chronology for a rewatch, or an essentials cut when a deadline matters more than completeness.
- Track at the smallest useful unit. In the MCU, mark each Disney+ season separately rather than treating an entire show as one checkbox. Specials, One-Shots and animation need their own entries if your chosen list includes them.
- Record progress immediately. Tick a title as soon as its credits finish and add a short note for a split season or a film you paused. Do not maintain three competing checklists.
This system also prevents a common mistake: putting every Spider-Man, X-Men and DC film into the MCU column simply because a multiverse story references it. Use a tracker’s “legacy,” “adjacent” or separate-universe labels instead.

What is the best order to watch the MCU?
For a first watch, release order is the safest choice because reveals, post-credit scenes and crossovers arrive in the sequence Marvel Studios designed. In-universe chronology is more useful on a second pass, but it can disclose where later stories sit before the intended reveal.
| Order | Best for | Strength | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Release order | First-time viewers | Preserves theatrical and Disney+ reveal order, including post-credit payoffs | Events jump backward and forward in time |
| Disney+ in-universe chronology | Rewatchers and continuity mappers | Groups stories by when their events occur | Can spoil later-story placement and multiverse context |
| Essentials or speed-run | Viewers working toward a date | Reduces hours while retaining selected setup | Leaves out character arcs, side plots and connective tissue |
Release order for a first watch
Begin with Iron Man (2008), then follow the films and series by their original cinema or Disney+ release sequence. WatchOrders’ guidance, updated 20 October 2026, likewise says a first watch should start with Iron Man and reserve chronology for a later pass. Release order also keeps end-credit scenes from landing before the story they were written to set up.

Use the current Disney+ Complete Timeline when you want the studio’s present placement. Exact years are not always stated, and multiverse projects such as Loki and What If…? do not behave like a single linear calendar. A fan chronology can therefore make a different choice where dates are ambiguous; that is a reconstruction, not a higher authority than the studio list.
Essentials when time is limited
Choose a published essentials cut rather than deleting titles at random. WatchOrders lists a 94-hour, 7-minute essential release-order cut, while the Disney+ “Countdown to Avengers: Doomsday” selection is a separate studio-curated shortcut. Treat either as a new checklist so that omitted titles remain visibly unwatched.
What is on Marvel’s official MCU timeline now?
Marvel’s current authority is Disney+, not a frozen web article or an old fan spreadsheet. Marvel.com’s 22 October 2026 guide tells viewers to open the Marvel brand page on Disney+ and choose either the MCU Movie Timeline or the MCU Complete Timeline; the latter breaks television into individual seasons. The guide is presented as “Here’s your complete viewing guide for all the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies and series on Disney+.”
The published Complete Timeline begins with Eyes of Wakanda, followed by Captain America: The First Avenger, the Agent Carter One-Shot and Captain Marvel, then moves to Iron Man. It includes the Netflix-era seasons of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders and The Punisher, as well as I Am Groot, Loki, What If…?, Marvel Zombies and later Phase Five and Six projects through VisionQuest.

The order is living data. Marvel republished its guide in June 2026 after swapping Wonder Man and Daredevil: Born Again season 2; the October version places VisionQuest after The Punisher: One Last Kill. Check the Disney+ page whenever a new title arrives instead of assuming a screenshot remains current. Brad Winderbaum has described Disney+ as Marvel Studios’ “medium to define the canon now.”
Open Marvel.com for the studio’s announcement, then use Disney+ itself for the clickable sequence. Some Spider-Man films may be absent in a particular country because Sony-held home-video rights create regional catalogue gaps.
Which tracker should I use to mark films and seasons?
Pick one tracker whose storage model you understand and stay with it. A local checklist is convenient on one device; a signed-in service is safer when you switch devices or browsers.
| Tracker | What it offers | Persistence | Useful limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disney+ Marvel brand page | Official Movie and Complete Timelines | No personal watched-state checklist | Use it as the authority, not as your progress log |
| Road to Doomsday | Release and timeline modes, skip guidance and hours-left planning | Saved on the current device | Clearing browser data erases marks; no sign-in |
| MCU Watchlist | 130-plus Marvel and adjacent titles, Essential/Optional labels, schedule planner and a US streaming guide | Local browser storage; no account | Ad-supported and its catalogue is broader than the core MCU |
| WatchOrders | Release, chronological and shorter MCU and DC cuts | Local storage; nothing synced to a server | Use one browser profile consistently |
| Geeks Watchlist | Separate MCU, Spider-Man, X-Men, DC and Arrowverse collections; release, chronological and rating views | On-device; no account | Independent and TMDB-powered, not studio-affiliated |
| Marvel Timeline app | Chronological filters, direct links, in-theater titles and a “DoomsDay Essentials” changelog | App-managed; fan-made | Not affiliated with Marvel or Disney |
| Reddit r/MCU_Timeline tracker | Disney+-style poster grid, format and Phase filters, Netflix-season filter and “Mark next as watched” | Google sign-in sync | Community-maintained; its 15-title Doomsday list is a selected subset |
MCU Watchlist’s current catalogue is available at marvelwatchlist.com. Other options include the open-source Marvel Order project, which combines release and Disney+ chronology, and Cinopsys lists for Marvel and DC. Fan spreadsheets and Google Drive timeline documents can be useful reference sheets, but verify their date stamp before treating them as current.
What to do when a tracker loses your checkmarks
- If a local tracker is suddenly blank, check that you are in the same browser profile and have not cleared site data.
- If you need cross-device access, use a Google-signed tracker such as the October 2026 Reddit list rather than relying on local storage.
- Keep a plain-text backup of your last completed title, especially before changing phones or browsers.
- When two collections contain the same film, mark it in both only if the app supports shared state; otherwise note the duplicate manually.
How long does a complete MCU catch-up take?
The answer depends on what you include. The figures below are published estimates from the named guides, not measurements by this site.
| Scope | Published estimate | Source context |
|---|---|---|
| Netflix Marvel seasons added to the Disney+ timeline | 161 hours | Commentary cited by Wikipedia after their January 2024 addition |
| Complete Road to Doomsday-style list | About 230 hours | Esquire Philippines, 2026 |
| Movies-only version of that list | About 95 hours | Esquire Philippines, 2026 |
| 15-item speed run | About 33 hours | Esquire Philippines, 2026 |
| Phase Four | About 54 hours | IGN figure reported via Wikipedia, 2024 |
| Phase One | Slightly over 12 hours | IGN figure reported via Wikipedia, 2024 |
A complete run is a multi-hundred-hour project, so set a daily or weekly quota in your tracker and leave room for episodes that are split into seasons. Do not infer that a shorter list is “the canon”; it is simply a narrower goal.

Is the official MCU timeline book still useful?
Yes, but only as a Phase One through Phase Four reference. DK’s The Marvel Cinematic Universe: An Official Timeline, released 24 October 2023, is a 344-page book written by Anthony Breznican, Amy Ratcliffe and ReBecca Theodore-Vachon in close collaboration with Marvel Studios.
The book covers Marvel Studios projects on Earth-616, also called the Sacred Timeline, through Phase Four. Its own qualification says the timeline is specific to that period and that later multiverse stories may cause timelines to “crash or converge.” Netflix shows were later folded into Disney+’s chronology, but no 2025 or 2026 print update covering Phases Five and Six was identified. Use the book for a durable Phase 1–4 map and Disney+ for current placement.

How many DCEU movies are there, and how is the DCU different?
The DCEU and DCU are separate continuities. The DCEU is the closed 2013–2023 run; the DCU began as a new continuity with Creature Commandos in 2024. Do not weave one into the other.
| Continuity | Status | Scope and starting point | Recommended tracking |
|---|---|---|---|
| DCEU | Closed | 15 theatrical films from Man of Steel (2013) through Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023) | One finished release-order list; chronology is an optional rewatch |
| DCU | Ongoing | Begins with Creature Commandos (2024) and continues with new film and series projects | Separate open list that will change as titles release |
| Elseworlds | Standalone worlds | The Batman and Joker are not DCU canon | Keep in an “Elseworlds” collection |
DCEU order
Use release order for a first pass. The chronological adjustment is small: place Wonder Woman (1918) first, then Wonder Woman 1984, followed by Man of Steel and the later releases. Guides differ over the canon status of Zack Snyder’s Justice League; label it according to the guide you chose rather than silently replacing the theatrical cut.
New DCU order
A current project sequence is Creature Commandos (2024), Superman (2025), Supergirl (2026), Lanterns (2026), Clayface (2026) and Man of Tomorrow (2027). James Gunn has described the DCU as an alternate universe where stories can occur in different places and times; he has also said individual stories should matter even when they are not merely setup for a crossover. Clayface is connected to the DCU but is set before Superman, so release order and internal chronology will not always match.

How should I track DC, Spider-Man and X-Men without mixing universes?
Use the same one-list-per-continuity rule. Geeks Watchlist’s separate MCU, Spider-Man, X-Men, DC and Arrowverse collections are a clean model; a film can be shared between collections only when the tracker explicitly identifies that relationship.
- Keep Fox X-Men films outside the MCU Disney+ sequence, even when a multiverse story references mutants.
- Treat Raimi and Webb Spider-Man films as optional side quests unless your chosen MCU guide labels a confirmed connection.
- Use MCU Watchlist’s “Legacy” category for Fox X-Men, the Blade trilogy and Sony Spider-Man films with confirmed MCU links rather than presenting them as Sacred Timeline entries.
- Do not force Arrowverse episodes into a film-only DC list; use an episode-level collection if you intend to watch that franchise.
The October 2026 Reddit tracker includes Fox’s X-Men and X2 in its selected Doomsday checklist because mutants are returning, but that inclusion is a catch-up choice, not a declaration that every Fox film is MCU canon.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where can I stream the titles?
Streaming availability is geographic and changes independently of canon. Disney+ carries the MCU timeline in many markets, but Sony and Universal licensing can leave Spider-Man or other titles elsewhere. Esquire Philippines listed some Spider-Man films on Netflix, while MCU Watchlist maintains a US guide spanning Disney+, Netflix, Max and Hulu.
Check the service shown for your country on the day you watch. A missing title does not mean it was removed from the continuity; it usually means the rights holder or regional catalogue differs. The DCU is associated with theatrical releases and Max/HBO distribution for series such as Lanterns and Peacemaker, but regional terms still apply.

The listed theatrical date is 18 December 2026. Because release dates and playlists can change, verify the date and Disney+ Countdown playlist near your viewing window.
- Decide whether you need context or completion. The maximalist Road to Doomsday list is about 230 hours; the movies-only cut is about 95 hours; a 15-item speed run is about 33 hours, according to Esquire Philippines.
- Use a named essentials list. Disney+ has a “Countdown to Avengers: Doomsday” playlist. WatchOrders offers an essentials cut, and fan apps added “DoomsDay Essentials” filters in August 2026.
- Keep Loki seasons distinct. The Reddit tracker’s 15-title selection lists the Loki seasons separately, so do not mark the series complete after one season.
- Set a realistic quota. Esquire’s mid-August 2026 planning example worked out to roughly 13 hours per week for its full list. Your tracker’s hours-per-day planner can convert that into a schedule without pretending every viewer has the same pace.
If you want a release-order essentials pass rather than Disney+ chronology, WatchOrders lists 94 hours and 7 minutes. That figure is a guide’s estimate, not a guarantee that every regional cut or episode length is identical.

What are the most common timeline-tracking mistakes?
- Starting chronologically as a newcomer: later reveals can become obvious before their release-order payoff.
- Confusing “official” with “complete: Disney+ is Marvel Studios’ current placement authority, but it does not include every Marvel-related film made by another company.
- Marking a whole series at once: season-by-season entries prevent you from forgetting where a split season or special belongs.
- Trusting an undated spreadsheet: living lists change when Marvel republishes its chronology; check the update date.
- Clearing browser data: local checkmarks can vanish without warning, so use a synced account or keep a backup note.
- Using one DC list: the DCEU ended and the DCU is a separate, ongoing continuity; Elseworlds are a third category.
- Assuming every title streams together: rights and catalogues vary by country, especially for Spider-Man.
What is the simplest setup to keep using?
For most viewers, the durable setup is a release-order MCU checklist for the first watch, the Disney+ Complete Timeline bookmarked for later, one finished DCEU list, one open DCU list and a separate legacy/Elseworlds collection. Use a signed-in tracker if you change devices; otherwise stay on one browser and export or copy your last completed title occasionally.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I switch from release order to chronological order halfway through the MCU?
You can, but create a second view instead of physically reordering the first checklist. Finish the current release-order pass or record a clear stopping point, then begin chronology as a separate rewatch so post-credit scenes and spoiler exposure remain understandable.
Are the Netflix Marvel shows really part of the MCU timeline?
Disney+ now places seasons of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders and The Punisher in its Complete Timeline. Their availability and episode order can still vary by country, so use the Disney+ season labels rather than a third-party show-level checkbox.
What should I do if a movie is missing from Disney+ in my country?
Check the regional streaming guide in your tracker and search the title by its exact release name on services available locally. Rights gaps, especially for Spider-Man films, do not change the title’s continuity status; leave it unchecked until you have a legal source.
Is the Marvel timeline book updated for the newest phases?
The 2023 DK book remains a Phase One–Four reference. For Phase Five, Phase Six and newly inserted television seasons, use the living Disney+ chronology because no newer print edition covering those phases was identified.
