Use AI to draft or revise a narrowly defined Verse change, but treat the output as a proposal—not proof that the mechanic works. In UEFN, the reliable path is to review the code, run Verse > Build Verse Code, place and configure the resulting Verse device, launch a Fortnite session, trigger the behavior, and inspect both the game and its logs. Epic provides two routes: the Epic Developer Assistant for answers, code generation, and guided instructions, and the beta UEFN MCP integration, which can connect a compatible AI agent to supported editor operations.
Which AI route fits your UEFN project?
The Developer Assistant is the lower-friction choice for explanations and first drafts. UEFN MCP is the more operational choice when you want a compatible agent to inspect project Verse and use supported editor, compile, device, or play-session tools.

Epic describes UEFN MCP as beta. Its documentation warns that tool calls can cause editor hitching and that not every general Unreal MCP toolset is compatible with UEFN. Epic lists compatible-agent examples rather than requiring one exclusive vendor, so confirm the current setup instructions before connecting an agent.
What should I prepare before asking AI to change Verse?
Give the agent a small, observable task and enough project context to avoid guessing. Before writing the prompt, identify the Verse device file, the event that should trigger, the expected visible or logged result, and the Creative devices that the script must reference.

- The exact behavior to add or change, stated as one trigger and one expected result.
- The existing Verse device name and relevant functions or events.
- The names and types of level devices that must be connected.
- Whether a reference is an
@editableproperty that must be assigned in the Details panel. - A request for a minimal diff, an explanation of changed lines, and a build result without claiming that gameplay passed.
A useful first request is:
In my existing Verse device, add a log message when the round starts. Explain the changed lines, compile the project, and report the build result. Keep the edit small and do not claim gameplay passed.
This wording separates code generation, compilation, and runtime verification. It also gives you a concrete expected observation: a round-start message in the appropriate log.
How do I create the Verse file that becomes a gameplay device?
Start with a Verse Device template in Verse Explorer. A Verse file by itself is not an active device in the level; after it builds, you must place the generated device and configure it.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Open your UEFN project and choose Verse > Verse Explorer.
- Add a new Verse file using the Verse Device template.
- Open the file in the UEFN-bundled VS Code integration.
- Save the file before asking AI to edit it, so the agent is working from the current source.
- Tell the agent the device’s actual name and the event or function you want changed.
The template gives the agent a known starting point. If you instead paste an isolated snippet, the agent may invent imports, events, or device references that do not match your project.
How should I prompt AI to write or revise Verse?
Describe the trigger, the observable result, and the boundaries of the edit. Ask for assumptions to be called out rather than silently filled in.
Include the trigger
Say whether the change starts at round start, an interaction, a timer, a player event, or another specific event already present in the device. If the event is already implemented, provide its function name instead of asking the agent to invent a lifecycle hook.
Define an observable result
Specify what a player should see or what message should appear in the Output Log. “Make it work” is not testable; “print a message when the round starts” is.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
State device and reference constraints
Name the Creative devices and explain which one should be controlled. Ask the agent to identify every required @editable property. A reference initialized in code does not automatically point to the intended device placed in your level.

Require a reviewable change
Request the smallest edit, a line-by-line explanation, and any assumptions. For MCP, ask the agent to report each operation—read, edit, compile, or session action—so you can distinguish an attempted action from an observed result.
How do I review AI-generated Verse before building?
Read the proposed diff yourself. A plausible-looking answer can still use the wrong event, class, import, or device reference.
- Confirm that the generated device name matches the file and the device you intend to place.
- Check imports and type names against the APIs already used in the project.
- Verify that event subscriptions and function signatures match the existing code.
- Look for every
@editablereference and decide which level device should fill it. - Remove unrelated refactors, broad rewrites, and speculative error handling from a small change.
- Ensure diagnostic or logging code cannot be mistaken for proof that the gameplay mechanic succeeded.
The bundled Verse VS Code extension supports editing and checks, but Epic warns that editor diagnostics can miss compiler errors. Treat its underlines as hints and UEFN’s build command as the authoritative compile check.
How do I compile Verse in UEFN?
Save the file and run Verse > Build Verse Code. Then read the Message Log or Output Log, not just the agent’s summary.
- Save the edited Verse file.
- In UEFN, choose Verse > Build Verse Code.
- Wait for the build to finish and inspect the reported errors and warnings.
- If it fails, copy the actual compiler diagnostic, including the file and line, into the next AI request.
- Ask for the smallest correction, apply it, and build again.
A successful build establishes that the current source compiled. It does not establish that the device is in the level, that references point to the intended objects, or that the event fires during play.
How do I place and wire the generated Verse device?
After a successful build, find the generated Verse device in the Content Browser and drag it into the level. Then assign its editable references in the device’s Details panel.
- Locate the built Verse device asset.
- Drag one instance into the level.
- Select the instance and open its Details panel.
- For each
@editablefield, assign the intended Creative device from the level. - Check that the assigned object has the configuration your script expects.
This wiring step is a common reason a script appears inert. The class can compile while its placed instance has an empty or incorrect reference. If you change a reference or another level property, that is a level change, not merely a Verse-file change.

How do I launch a Fortnite session and exercise the mechanic?
Use UEFN’s playtest flow: choose Launch Session, wait for the Fortnite client, then choose Start Game. Trigger the exact event described in your prompt and observe both the player-facing result and the logs.
- Save the project and confirm the intended Verse device is placed.
- Choose Launch Session in UEFN.
- In the connected Fortnite client, choose Start Game.
- Perform the trigger: start the round, interact with the object, enter the area, or perform the relevant player action.
- Compare what happened with the expected visible behavior.
- Read the in-game Log or UEFN Output Log for the expected message and any errors.
UEFN playtesting runs in a Fortnite client. It is not equivalent to executing Verse in the text editor, and a green build is not a passing gameplay test.
What should my Verse test matrix check?
Test the complete path from source to placed device to player interaction. The following checks are practical cases to run for the mechanic you specified, not claims that Epic ran a particular script.
| Stage | Action | Evidence to record | If it fails |
|---|---|---|---|
| Build | Run Verse > Build Verse Code | Build status and Message/Output Log diagnostics | Send the exact compiler diagnostic for a minimal correction |
| Placement and wiring | Inspect the placed Verse device and every editable field | Correct instance in the level and intended device assignments | Place the device or correct the Details-panel references |
| Happy path | Launch Session, choose Start Game, and trigger the event | Expected player-facing behavior and matching log message | Check the trigger, event subscription, and runtime log |
| Failure or edge path | Try an absent or differently configured reference, plus relevant repeated or multi-player interactions | Defined behavior rather than an unexamined crash or silent failure | Capture the error and narrow the next change |
| After changes | Push the appropriate update and repeat the interaction | Fresh observation after the new code or level state reaches the session | Confirm the right push command was used, then retest |
When should I use Push Verse Changes or Push Changes?
Use Push Verse Changes when the active session only needs updated Verse files. Use Push Changes when level or device edits must also reach the session.

- Placed-device or property edit: save the level/device change and use Push Changes; then repeat the full interaction.
- Uncertain state: stop and relaunch the session if you cannot tell whether the new placement or property reached the client.
Ask an MCP agent to report connection or client-log information when appropriate, but inspect the actual behavior yourself. An agent’s statement that a push or test action completed is not the same as seeing the mechanic work.
Why does AI-generated Verse compile but do nothing?
Compilation proves syntax and type checking for the current source; “nothing happens” usually requires checking the placed instance, references, trigger path, and runtime evidence in that order.
The device was never placed
Return to the Content Browser and confirm that an instance of the built Verse device is in the level. The source file does not execute merely because it exists.

An editable reference is empty or wrong
Select the placed instance and inspect each @editable field. Assign the intended level device and verify that its settings allow the expected interaction.
The event is not the event you triggered
Compare the prompt’s trigger with the actual event subscription and reproduce the action in a fresh session. A round-start handler will not run because a player interacted with an object, and the reverse is also true.
The runtime path failed
Add a temporary Print() at a useful point, rebuild, push the update, and trigger the path again. If the message never appears, the failure is before that line; if it appears and the result is wrong, inspect the following calls and references.
How do I use Verse logs to diagnose a failed test?
Print() can display a message in-game and in UEFN’s Output Log. Epic also documents log channels for less intrusive output and PrintCallStack() for tracing how execution reached a problem.
- Give each temporary message a distinctive label and include the state you need to inspect.
- Place messages before and after a suspected event, reference use, or device call.
- Use
PrintCallStack()when the same function can be reached through several routes. - Remove or reduce noisy diagnostics after the behavior is understood.
For project runtime errors, Epic documents a Verse tab in the Content Service Portal with error categories and call stacks. The portal retains up to 30 days of runtime-error reports; that is a retention limit, not a measure of AI accuracy or script quality.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat can UEFN MCP automate, and what remains my responsibility?
UEFN MCP can let a compatible AI agent read or edit project Verse, compile, work with supported devices, and interact with play sessions. You remain responsible for approving edits, checking the build output, confirming level wiring, and judging the observed gameplay result.
Keep MCP requests small because the integration is beta and Epic notes possible editor hitching during tool calls. Do not assume that a general Unreal MCP toolset will work in UEFN. Follow the current UEFN MCP documentation for setup and supported operations.

“Unreal MCP in UEFN is in beta, so expect some rough edges and more capabilities on the way.” — Epic Games, official UEFN announcement, August 20, 2026
How do I iterate without losing a working mechanic?
Change one behavior at a time, preserve the last known-good source, and make every test repeatable.
- State one desired change and its expected observation.
- Ask AI for a minimal diff and an explanation of assumptions.
- Review the diff and save a copy of the prior working file.
- Build with Verse > Build Verse Code and record the diagnostic result.
- Update the active session with Push Verse Changes or Push Changes, depending on what changed.
- Run the same trigger and edge case again, then record visible behavior and logs.
This sequence keeps three results separate: what the agent proposed, what UEFN compiled, and what Fortnite actually did. That separation is the core safeguard when using AI for Verse.
What is the dependable definition of “tested” for an AI-written Verse script?
Call the script tested only after the intended Verse device is built, placed, wired, sent to the session, and exercised in the Fortnite client with the relevant output and logs inspected. An AI response or a successful compilation is an intermediate checkpoint, not a gameplay verdict.
For Epic’s official workflow references, see Modify and run your first Verse program, the Epic Developer tools page, and the UEFN MCP documentation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI agent test Verse without opening the Fortnite client?
No. UEFN playtesting runs in a Fortnite client, where you start the game and perform the trigger. An agent may help operate supported session tools or report logs, but the gameplay observation still has to be verified in the running client.
What does UEFN MCP’s beta status mean for a small project?
Expect occasional rough edges, including possible editor hitching during tool calls and incomplete compatibility with general Unreal MCP toolsets. Keep requests narrow and confirm that the operations you need are supported before relying on automation.
How long are Verse runtime-error reports available?
Epic documents retention of up to 30 days in the Verse area of the Content Service Portal. That limit describes how long reports remain available; it does not indicate a script’s reliability or an AI system’s accuracy.
Why is assigning an editable device reference necessary if the code already names a device?
A reference declared or initialized in Verse does not automatically select the particular Creative device placed in your level. The placed Verse device’s Details panel must point each editable field at the intended level object.
