To compare the same news story for bias, first prove that the articles describe the same underlying event, then preserve each version and code selection, framing, sourcing, omissions, prominence and factual support separately. A headline-only comparison is not auditable: headlines change, pages update, and two articles that mention the same person may concern different incidents.
This guide gives you a repeatable collection sheet, matching method, bias-analysis rubric, version-capture process, automation options and reporting framework. It also explains copyright limits and shows how to capture clean, timestamped pages with ScreenshotNeo when maintaining a browser-based setup is unnecessary.

What should you capture before comparing coverage?
Capture enough context that another reviewer can reconstruct what was published, when it was visible and how prominently it appeared. A screenshot of a headline alone cannot show revisions, attribution, omitted context or whether the page was accessible to every reader.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Outlet name, country or region, language and page type (article, live blog, homepage item or video page).
- Article URL and canonical URL, if the page exposes one.
- Headline, deck or standfirst, byline, article type, publication timestamp and update timestamp.
- Retrieval timestamp in a stated time zone.
- Visible article text, or a permitted local representation such as notes, a hash and a short quotation.
- Main actors, actions, locations, dates and the triggering claim.
- Quoted sources, linked documents and any original evidence cited.
- Image, caption, headline graphic, homepage position and other placement context.
- Archive or snapshot identifier, plus a pointer to every later capture.
- Observed omissions, revision notes, researcher judgment, confidence and unresolved questions.
The Media Bias Detector’s collection approach recovers title, publication date and text while removing irrelevant boilerplate. A separate archived-site similarity study extracts headlines and links. Those practices support a practical rule: preserve metadata and a permitted representation, not merely an image of the page.
Keep raw observations separate from interpretation
Store the original capture and your derived labels in different fields or files. A later reviewer should be able to tell which words appeared on the page and which conclusion you drew from them. Do not overwrite an old capture when a publisher edits the story.
How do you define the same event before collecting stories?
Write a neutral event key before searching. Include the principal actors, action, location, date or time window and the claim that triggered coverage. The key is a matching aid, not a finding that the event happened exactly as described.
Example event key
2026-10-28 | national regulator | opens inquiry into airline data breach | capital city | company disclosed unauthorized access
Use the same key for every outlet, then attach each article’s own wording and claims. If one page concerns the initial disclosure and another concerns a later parliamentary hearing, create two event keys even if both mention the breach.
Why event identification comes first
Same-story comparison is an event-identification problem before it is a bias-scoring problem. Automated systems can group articles by semantic similarity, shared entities and fact overlap, but similar names or repeated background paragraphs can create false matches. Borderline pairs require human review.

How should you choose outlets and a collection window?
Fix the publisher universe and observation window before collecting. State which outlets, regions, languages, feeds and page types are included, and collect comparable material during the same interval.
- For a small study, choose a fixed set spanning the relevant geographic or editorial range.
- For a larger study, collect from feeds or monitoring services, then sample event clusters for manual verification.
- Record paywalls, robots restrictions, inaccessible pages, feed gaps and language limits.
- Interpret a missing article only against the monitored universe. It may reflect feed availability or access limits rather than a decision not to cover the event.
TOLD’s documentation currently lists 457 catalogue sources and 261 live-feed sources (page accessed October 30, 2026). Those counts are time-sensitive; treat them as a dated snapshot, not a permanent denominator. TOLD also describes itself as an aggregator, not a newsroom.

How do you capture a page before it changes?
Take an initial capture as soon as an article enters the event set, then retain later captures as separate versions. A revision can alter the headline, deck, body, quotations, links, images or placement without changing the URL.
- Save metadata first. Write the retrieval time, URL, canonical URL, publication time and update time before copying text.
- Preserve a permitted representation. Depending on your rights and the site’s terms, use a short quotation, structured notes, a content hash, a screenshot or an archive reference rather than republishing the article.
- Record page context. Capture the lead image, caption, headline graphic, related links and homepage or section placement when those affect prominence.
- Repeat on a schedule. Take another capture after a material interval or when the publisher changes the timestamp, headline or story position.
- Diff versions. Compare headline, deck, body paragraphs, quotations, links, images and timestamps. Classify each change as substantive, cosmetic, corrective or a timestamp refresh.
Revision tracking systems such as those described by Normalize the News emphasize headline-versus-body checks, quote-omission checks and coverage ledgers. Keep the first-seen version even when a correction supersedes it; the earlier wording is part of the publication history.

How can you match articles that cover the same event?
Use a two-stage match: automated candidate grouping followed by manual confirmation. This keeps large collections manageable without treating a similarity score as proof.
Manual matching signals
- Shared people, organizations, places and specific actions.
- The same date or narrow time window.
- Distinctive claims, numbers, documents or quotations.
- Common links to a primary statement, filing, court record or transcript.
- Consistent sequence of events rather than only a shared background topic.
Scaled matching
Within a fixed time window, use headline and body embeddings or another semantic-similarity method to generate candidate pairs. The Media Bias Detector uses pairwise cosine similarity and graph components; TOLD groups headlines by event; an academic archived-site study extracts headlines and links. Review low-confidence pairs and split clusters when one event key contains multiple stages.
Do not force a match
Mark a pair as “related, different event” when the actors or action differ materially. Keep a reason for every exclusion. A transparent non-match is more useful than inflating a cluster to make outlet coverage look comparable.
What is the difference between story selection and framing?
Selection asks whether an outlet covered the event and how prominently. Framing asks how that outlet presented the event after choosing to cover it. Report the two observations separately rather than combining them into one bias score.

Purdue University Northwest’s information-literacy guidance recommends checking headline/body alignment, charged language, quoted and missing voices, original evidence, multiple outlets and omitted context. Ad Fontes separates reliability and bias factors, including veracity, headline and graphic treatment, language and political position. Use those dimensions as a checklist, not as a license to infer intent.
How do you reduce partisan-label anchoring?
Code the article before looking at outlet-level ratings whenever practical. Hide logos or names during first-pass coding, or have reviewers work from a balanced set of outlets. Blind-survey designs used by AllSides remove branding; Ad Fontes uses politically balanced panels and multiple analysts.

Blind review does not remove every source of bias. Sample size, language, reviewer selection and event choice still affect results. Treat outlet labels as context about publishing patterns, never as evidence that an individual article is true or false. As Purdue’s guidance puts it, neutrality and credibility are not the same thing.
What should a comparison table contain?
A structured ledger makes disagreements inspectable. Recommended columns are:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Keep raw captures in a separate store from this derived table. If a cell cannot be established, write “not stated” and identify the limitation rather than guessing.
How should you report uncertainty and results?
Begin the methods note with the publisher universe, collection dates, archive limitations, inaccessible pages, feed gaps, language restrictions and matching rule. State whether the conclusion concerns one article, one event cluster or a broader outlet pattern.
- Use descriptive language such as “foregrounded,” “quoted,” “omitted” or “used a more certain verb.”
- Reserve stronger claims for repeated, documented patterns across a defined sample.
- Separate factual error from ideological tone; a source can lean and still report carefully, or appear balanced and still be wrong.
- Explain confidence for automated matches and identify every manually resolved borderline case.
- Do not turn an alignment label into a quality rating. TOLD explicitly says its labels describe publishing patterns over time, not quality.
What are the copyright limits when saving news pages?
In the United States, criticism, commentary, news reporting, scholarship and research are examples of purposes that may qualify for fair use, but fair use is fact-specific. There is no universally safe word count or percentage.
Prefer links, metadata, short quotations, hashes, local analytical notes and permitted snapshots over republishing full articles. Minimize expressive copying, respect paywalls and access controls, and obtain permission or legal advice for a commercial, public-facing or high-stakes project. The U.S. Copyright Office’s fair-use guidance and 17 U.S.C. §107 explain the factors; neither creates an automatic quota.

A browser automation script can open each URL, wait for content, save a screenshot and record metadata. For reproducibility, pin the browser version, set a consistent viewport and timezone, log redirects and HTTP failures, and save the exact capture time. Expect cookie dialogs, newsletter prompts, chat widgets, lazy-loaded images, bot checks, paywalls and JavaScript-rendered text to make naive screenshots inconsistent.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
Use one GET request for a clean image or PDF:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
See the parameter reference and response details in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. For an evidence workflow, useful options include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, 12 device presets or a custom viewport, retina scale, PDF paper size and margins, custom CSS or JavaScript, click-before-capture, selector hiding, waits for a selector, delay or network idle, blocked ads and trackers, custom headers, cookies, user agent and Authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, a chosen cache TTL, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can reduce migration changes.

Check the event key, date window, actors and triggering claim. Split later developments into a new cluster and retain the reason for the split.
The headline changed after collection
Keep both captures with retrieval times. Diff headline, deck, body, quotations, links and images; classify the change instead of treating the latest text as the only record.
A page is blank or incomplete

What is a defensible conclusion?
A strong report shows how articles were matched, what each page contained at a stated time, which differences are selection versus framing, how revisions were handled and where evidence remains incomplete. It does not rely on a partisan label or a single headline. Automated collection can scale the archive, but human review is still required for borderline matches, tone, representativeness and interpretation.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many outlets should a small bias-analysis project include?
There is no universal minimum. Choose a fixed set that spans the geography or editorial range relevant to the event, explain why each outlet is in scope, and use the same collection window for all of them. A smaller, fully documented sample is more useful than a larger sample with inconsistent access.
Should I compare articles in their original languages?
Yes when your reviewers can reliably code those languages; otherwise state the translation method and treat wording judgments as less certain. Translation can change emotional intensity, attribution and active-versus-passive voice, so preserve the original text or a permitted representation.
Can a corrected article still be used as evidence?
Yes, if you retain the pre-correction capture and identify the correction time and substance. Analyze the original and corrected versions separately, especially when the change affects a headline, quotation, factual claim or attribution.
Is a screenshot sufficient for an academic archive?
Usually not by itself. Pair the image with URL, canonical URL, publication and retrieval times, visible text or notes, archive identifier, page context and a hash or other integrity record, subject to copyright and access restrictions.
