A used host bus adapter (HBA) solved my recurring backup-server disk headaches because it let TrueNAS and ZFS see each drive directly. I paid $30 for the card; that is my purchase price, not a promise that every HBA installation costs the same or eliminates all maintenance. The important part was putting the controller in IT (target or passthrough) mode, rather than letting a hardware RAID layer manage the disks.

Direct presentation preserves each disk’s identity and SMART data, while ZFS handles checksums and pool redundancy. An HBA does not create a backup by itself, cure a failing disk, or replace restore testing and an independent copy. It removes one opaque layer from the storage path, which made my system easier to diagnose and less prone to losing track of its pool after a reboot.

What changed when I added a $30 HBA to my backup server?

The practical change was architectural: the disks stopped depending on a motherboard port mix, an improvised expander arrangement, or RAID firmware to appear consistently. The HBA presents SAS and SATA devices to the operating system as individual disks. TrueNAS can then identify those devices, read their health information, and let ZFS apply the redundancy and recovery policy.

I describe the result as “stopped babysitting” because there were fewer layers to inspect when a disk was missing or a pool did not import cleanly. That is a first-person experience, not a measured number of hours saved. A card will not prevent every alert, cable failure, firmware problem, or degraded pool; it makes the failure path more legible.

What is an HBA, and why does direct disk access matter for ZFS?

An HBA is a PCIe storage controller whose normal job is connectivity, not volume management. It carries commands between the operating system and SAS or SATA drives. In a TrueNAS system using ZFS, that simple behavior is desirable because ZFS needs visibility into each member device.

ZFS can see the devices it is protecting

With direct access, ZFS can associate a device with its stable identity, obtain SMART health data through the operating system, and detect checksum errors at the filesystem layer. ZFS can then repair a damaged block from redundant copies when the pool layout allows it. The controller is not deciding which sectors belong to a virtual RAID volume or hiding the physical members behind one logical disk.

Why an HBA can reduce troubleshooting

When disks are passed through consistently, a missing drive is more likely to point to a cable, slot, power lead, drive, or controller problem rather than an undocumented virtual-volume state. You still need logs and diagnostics, but you are looking at the same disk identities that ZFS uses. This is the sense in which an HBA can remove recurring friction; it is not a guarantee of zero maintenance.

Do I need an HBA for a TrueNAS backup server?

No. A motherboard with enough reliable SATA ports can be perfectly adequate for a small pool. An HBA becomes useful when you need more ports, external disk shelves, consistent cabling, or a controller that exposes all drives cleanly and has mature firmware support.

An HBA is a good fit when:

  • Your motherboard lacks enough ports for the number of disks you plan to use.
  • You are adding an enclosure or backplane that expects internal or external SAS links.
  • Disk discovery changes after reboot, or the existing controller presents virtual volumes instead of individual drives.
  • You want a widely documented controller family with known TrueNAS and ZFS behavior.
  • You can provide adequate airflow for a hot-running server card.

You may not need one when:

  • Your existing SATA ports expose every disk directly and remain stable through reboots.
  • The machine has no expansion requirement and the motherboard firmware and drivers are supported by your TrueNAS release.
  • You cannot cool an additional PCIe card or cannot source the correct cables and connectors.

Do not buy an HBA merely because a listing advertises a large RAID number. For ZFS, direct-disk behavior and supportability matter more than a controller’s unused RAID features.

What is the difference between an HBA and a hardware RAID card?

An HBA forwards physical disks. A hardware RAID card normally combines them into a virtual disk and may add cache, parity calculations, and proprietary recovery logic. A RAID card can sometimes be configured for HBA, JBOD, or passthrough operation; in that mode it should behave like a standard HBA, which is the useful configuration for ZFS.

Characteristic HBA in IT/target mode Hardware RAID mode
What TrueNAS sees Individual SAS/SATA devices One or more controller-created virtual disks
Who manages redundancy ZFS Controller firmware, with ZFS above the virtual disk
Disk serial and SMART visibility Usually preserved when the firmware and driver pass through commands May be masked or incomplete
Sector-size information Available to the operating system and ZFS Can be obscured by the abstraction layer
Write cache and battery dependency No hardware RAID cache is required May depend on cache policies and a battery-backed unit
Failure diagnosis Drive, cable, slot, and HBA can be examined separately Virtual-volume and controller state add another layer
Recommended for a ZFS data pool Yes, when supported and correctly configured No, unless the card is placed in a genuine passthrough/JBOD mode

TrueNAS documentation warns against using hardware RAID cards as hardware RAID with TrueNAS. It notes that repurposed RAID cards can hide serial numbers and SMART health, run slower than HBA equivalents, and risk data loss when write cache remains enabled after a battery backup unit fails. OpenZFS gives the underlying reason: hardware RAID limits ZFS opportunities to self-heal checksum errors, can hide sector-size details, and inserts controller firmware that cannot be inspected like the filesystem’s open code.

Why is IT mode the setting that matters?

IT means “initiator target” mode in the LSI terminology commonly used for these cards. Listings and documentation may also call the equivalent behavior Target, passthrough, or JBOD mode. The label matters less than the result: the controller must expose each physical disk without creating a hardware-managed RAID volume.

IT mode checklist

  • Confirm the exact card model and firmware personality before installing it in a production pool.
  • Look for IT or Target firmware, not IR (integrated RAID) or a vendor RAID personality.
  • Disable or avoid write-back cache that depends on a failed battery or cache module.
  • After flashing or changing modes, verify the firmware version and controller sees the expected number of ports.
  • Test with a spare disk before connecting an existing pool.

Flashing procedures vary by controller generation and vendor. The 9200, 9300, 9400, and 9500 families use different firmware tools and files, so follow the procedure for the exact model rather than applying a generic image. A wrong firmware image can leave a card unbootable or with an unsupported personality.

Should I buy an LSI 9211-8i in IT mode?

For a low-cost used build, the LSI 9211-8i and other SAS2008 cards remain sensible choices when the listing is honest about firmware and condition. TrueNAS identifies the 6-Gbps LSI 9211 and SAS2008 rebrands such as the IBM M1015 and Dell H200 as well-known second-hand options.

What to verify in a used listing

  • The exact model number and SAS2008 chipset, rather than a vague “LSI compatible” description.
  • IT or Target firmware, or a clear statement that the card can be flashed to that mode.
  • Internal connector type, commonly SFF-8087 on this generation, and whether the required breakout or backplane cables are included.
  • A present heatsink and fan, or a plan to provide direct airflow.
  • Photos or test information showing the card initializes and detects drives.
  • Return protection in case the card has damaged ports, bad firmware, or overheating problems.

The $30 I spent is an example of a used-market price, not a current universal price. Condition, shipping, cables, and region change the total cost. Treat unusually cheap cards as untested until you have verified them with a spare disk.

How do the 9211, 9300, 9400, and 9500 families compare?

The right generation depends on the server’s PCIe slots, required link speed, enclosure, and firmware support. Do not choose solely by the advertised RAID feature set.

Family or example Typical role What to check Best fit
LSI 9211-8i / SAS2008 rebrands 6-Gbps SAS HBA, commonly found used IT firmware, SFF-8087 cabling, cooling, card condition Budget TrueNAS pools and repurposed servers
IBM M1015 SAS2008 rebrand of the same general platform Firmware personality and exact connector layout Used-market alternative when an LSI-branded card is unavailable
Dell H200 SAS2008 rebrand used in many enterprise systems Cross-flashing requirements, bracket, cooling, cables Low-cost enterprise pull with verified IT behavior
9300 family Newer generation with higher link capability than SAS2008 PCIe lane and generation compatibility, current firmware, heat Systems needing newer platform support or more bandwidth
9400/9500 families 12-Gbps SAS options identified by TrueNAS Backplane speed, PCIe compatibility, airflow, firmware tools Newer servers, 12-Gbps enclosures, or longer support horizons

For every candidate, compare IT-mode availability, SAS generation and link speed, internal versus external ports, PCIe generation and lane width, cooling and noise, driver and firmware support, used-market condition, and whether serial and SMART data remain visible. A faster card does not make a slow disk pool faster if the enclosure, drives, or PCIe slot are the bottleneck.

How do I install and verify an HBA in TrueNAS?

Use a spare disk for the first boot. The goal is to prove direct visibility and stable device identity before the controller is allowed near an existing pool.

  1. Check the platform. Confirm that the motherboard has a compatible PCIe slot, that the slot provides the lanes the card expects, and that the chassis has room and airflow.
  2. Match connectors. Identify whether the card uses internal SFF-8087, newer SFF-8643, or external connectors. Buy the cable that matches both the card and the backplane; a connector that physically fits is not automatically wired correctly.
  3. Confirm firmware mode. Read the card’s boot screen or management utility and verify IT, Target, passthrough, or JBOD behavior. Do not create a hardware RAID virtual disk.
  4. Install with power removed. Seat the card, secure its bracket, connect the correct cables, and make sure every fan or heatsink has a clear airflow path.
  5. Boot with one test disk. In TrueNAS, inspect the storage or disk inventory and confirm the expected model, serial number, capacity, and device path appear.
  6. Check health data. Open the disk’s S.M.A.R.T. information and run a short test. If serial data or health attributes are absent, stop and resolve the controller mode, cable, or driver issue.
  7. Observe temperatures. Older SAS2008 cards can run hot in a poorly ventilated case. Add directed airflow or relocate the card before adding a full set of disks.
  8. Connect the remaining drives. Map each cable and backplane slot so a future replacement can be traced to a physical location.
  9. Validate the pool. After creating or importing the pool, run a scrub and watch the result. A clean scrub is an operational check, not proof that every future restore will work.
  10. Perform a restore test. Recover representative files to a separate location and open or verify them. Keep an independent copy or destination because pool redundancy is not the same as a separate backup.

How do I stop a TrueNAS pool from disappearing after a reboot?

Start by separating discovery from import. If the controller does not expose the disks consistently, ZFS cannot import a pool reliably; if the disks are visible but the pool is not imported, the problem is elsewhere.

If the disks are missing from the inventory

  • Power down and reseat the HBA and both ends of every SAS cable.
  • Check that the card is in IT/Target mode and that no RAID virtual disk was created.
  • Test one known-good disk and one cable at a time to isolate a failed component.
  • Inspect the card’s boot messages for port errors or a firmware mismatch.
  • Confirm the PCIe slot is enabled and not sharing resources in a way that disables the controller.

If disks appear but the pool does not import

  • Use TrueNAS’s pool import workflow and read the error rather than forcing an import blindly.
  • Check whether a disk is degraded, unavailable, or showing a changed identity after cabling.
  • Review system logs for link resets, command timeouts, or filesystem errors.
  • Do not initialize or format a disk that belongs to the pool while troubleshooting.

Stable device presentation makes these checks more predictable, but it cannot repair a damaged pool or replace a missing disk. Keep current configuration exports and document the original slot and cable layout.

Does an HBA make a ZFS backup pool reliable by itself?

No. The HBA supplies connectivity; ZFS redundancy, tested restores, monitoring, and an independent destination provide the protection. TrueNAS describes ZFS as failure-tolerant and configurable for different redundancy goals, while discouraging single-disk or striped pools for ordinary data that must survive a drive failure.

Choose redundancy for the failure you can tolerate

A mirrored layout can continue after a member fails, while RAIDZ layouts trade usable capacity, fault tolerance, and rebuild behavior differently. The correct choice depends on drive count, replacement time, and the amount of downtime or data loss you can accept. An HBA does not alter those ZFS trade-offs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not confuse pool redundancy with backup

A redundant pool protects against some disk failures; it does not protect against accidental deletion, ransomware, a fire, theft, or an administrator mistake replicated to every copy. Maintain at least one independent copy or destination and periodically restore files from it.

Be cautious with SMR drives

TrueNAS warns that shingled magnetic recording (SMR) drives can have slower rewrite performance and may become unstable or risk data loss during resilver operations. Confirm the recording technology of used disks before committing them to a critical pool, especially one that may need a long rebuild.

How much capacity can TrueNAS handle?

TrueNAS documentation cites management of up to 1,250 drives in a single storage array with enterprise-level tuning. That is a platform-scale ceiling for context, not a recommendation for a home backup server. At smaller scales, power, cooling, cabling, drive replacement procedures, and restore time are usually more important than the theoretical maximum.

Is a used HBA worth the money?

It is worth considering when a modest used card solves a real connectivity or visibility problem and you can verify its firmware, cooling, and cabling. The value comes from exposing disks cleanly to ZFS, not from a promise of faster transfers or automatic backup protection.

My $30 purchase made the backup server easier to reason about because it removed hardware RAID behavior and presented stable disk identities. Your result will depend on the motherboard, enclosure, drives, firmware, and airflow. Buy the card as one component in a tested backup design, then verify discovery, SMART access, scrubs, and restores before trusting it with irreplaceable data.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a Dell H200 with ZFS?

Yes, the Dell H200 is a SAS2008 rebrand commonly used in TrueNAS builds. Verify that its firmware is in IT or Target mode, confirm the connector and bracket fit your chassis, and test serial and SMART visibility before adding production disks.

Will an HBA improve backup transfer speed?

Not automatically. Throughput is limited by the PCIe slot, SAS link generation, cabling, enclosure, disks, network, and the backup software; an HBA’s primary benefit is direct and consistent disk presentation.

Can I mix SATA and SAS drives behind one HBA?

An HBA can normally connect both interface types when the backplane and cables support them. Check the enclosure’s wiring and expander compatibility, and validate each drive’s identity and health in TrueNAS before building the pool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I keep after flashing a used controller?

Record the original model, firmware version, IT-mode image, slot location, cable map, and pool topology. Store that information with your TrueNAS configuration backup so replacement or recovery does not depend on remembering the card’s history.
